Luck vs. Talent, Hard Work and Tenacity – All Bets Are On/Off?

Paul McCartney and Wings hit the top of the music charts with a lovely song based on the first segment of my topic. But this award-winning, prolific musician from Liverpool was blessed with more than a little luck. It’s my opinion his career has been based on talent, hard work and tenacity. I believe he, and his band mates who formed the Beatles, couldn’t have scored decades of success relying only on luck. Their musical gift and ability to work through some pretty difficult times delivered their dreams and carved them a place in history. The same holds true for us authors.

But friends and family still bring up the four-letter word beginning with “l” and ending in “k”. It’s as though some believe we must be born with an angel atop our shoulder to reach our potential in life. Rather than an angelic presence, I tend to think of luck as being spawned by Satan. When luck eludes me, as has always been the case, I can hear him snickering as I endure soul-searching, self-doubting moments. And his outbursts only succeed in spurring me to work harder—which is a good thing and he ends up the laughingstock.

Mealtime is often when luck is mentioned. Recently, over a lunch at a local restaurant, a friend cornered me with, “You know you’ve never been lucky. How will you make your publishing dreams come true?” Needless to say, the salsa and chips soured in my stomach. I sipped some water and prepared a reply. While I admitted everyone is entitled to opinions and beliefs, I preferred hard work and persistence over relying on a magic touch that would propel into the hallway of my desired New York publisher. She smiled and wished me, well, you guessed it. Funny how I left the restaurant and drove away wondering if she truly was a friend or simply someone who enjoyed holding the “luck factor” over my head?

What do you all think? Does luck play a role in our successes, or will talent, hard work and persistence make our dreams become reality on a more regular basis? Should we forget about counting on luck, battle the Devil and send him back into the dirt where he belongs--much as his daughter, the heroine in HELLE IN HEELS, does? Share your thoughts, and I'll pick from among the registered users to win a prize Monday morning!

Hi Shawna

Luck may play a small part in what we do and what we achieve but, I think hard work and persistence are what makes us successful. In the case of childbirth, luck plays an important role in the gender but, hard work and persistence on the parents part is what makes a child turn out to be successful or a failure. Luck may play an important part in getting a good job but, hard work and persistence will help you to keep that job and maybe even get a promotion. As for writers, I think it's a little of both luck and, hard work and persistence. Hard work and persistence will help you to write a good story. Luck will point you in the direction of a good editor and hopefully luck will make you a big selling author. I think luck, talent, hard work and persistence all go together to make anyone successful. As for your friend who said"you know you've never been lucky". I don't think I'd be friends with anyone who would be so negative with me. You got published so I guess you could say that you have had some luck in your life. Here's to you having many more lucky experiences due to your hard work, persistence and talent. Have a great weekend and thanks for taking the time to Blog with us. Mads:)

I think luck may play a little part in it but hard work and persistence are what makes people successful.

A Little Luck

Hi, Amy! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Truly, I shouldn't say I haven't been lucky in life. I was blessed by being born against all odds. Having a loving family and friends. Finding my real-life hero who's my biggest cheerleader (in addition to being a supportive mate, he's also 6'8"). But I prefer hard work to an easy path to reaching goals and fulfilling dreams. To work hard for something, and later achieve it, makes the end result so much more rewarding :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Have a great long weekend. I

Have a great long weekend. I love Paul's songs.

I think a bit of luck

I think a bit of luck doesn't hurt...but hard work and persistence is the key factor.

Luck Can't Hurt

Hi, Deborah! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I agree with you that some luck can't hurt...and can unlock an otherwise stubborn door of opportunity :) Here's to many doors opening and allowing us further passage to achieve our goals and make our dreams become reality :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Lucky enough to see Paul

I think that hard work and perserverance is the best way to make your dreams come true and sometimes a little luck comes into play. I have to admit that some times luck ison my side. For instance about ten years ago when Paul was touring I was lucky enough to be in a raffle for tickets to see him and won a pair. What a great time a had! Hope you achieve all your goals and may all your dreams come true.

Lucky, Indeed

Hi, Tetewa! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! You surely were lucky winning those tickets. Oh, speaking of luck and the Beatles, I do have a lucky story there. For my birthday present one year, my husband took me to see Ringo Starr in concert. We'd eaten dinner and were strolling through the casino when a lovely lady walked past me and smiled and said hello. I recognized her as Ringo's wife, Barbara. Immediately behind her was Ringo and several body guards. Talk about a perfect birthday present and one I'll never forget. So, yes, I guess there were lucky moments in my life :) Like you, I tend to rely on striving toward my goals, keeping my focus on them, and being thankful if luck comes into play with delivering success. For the folks who posted about timing coming into play, certainly timing played a major role in our crossing paths with Ringo and Barbara. Instead of taking another walk on the Boardwalk, we decided to remain inside. Great decision :) Many thanks for your kind words :) May you reach your goals and may your fondest dreams become reality :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

If we only counted on luck,

If we only counted on luck, then we would all win the lottery, lol. The best is hard work to achieve your goals and of course stubborness to not give up.

Luck and the lottery

Hi, Shuck! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Luck loves hiding from me, and that's mainly the reason I don't buy lottery tickets :) There is a pursuit where luck is the only thing involved IMO. I'll take chances when it comes to my writing--and write something in a completely different genre or sub-genre from time to time--but in other areas of life, I play more on the conservative side. But in my stories, I love pushing the envelope ;) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Paul Forever

Hi, Lisa! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I've had the pleasure of seeing Paul and Linda McCartney in concert with Wings on one occasion. A Fourth of July and concert I'll never forget. Beforehand, I was interviewed and appeared on the nightly news. Mom and I sang and cheered. I was the first person--in a crowd of over 100,000--who went through the admissions turnstile :) Music and writing are two of my passions. Of course, my greatest passion is for the real-life hero I married :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Hard Work, Luck and Persistence

Hi, Mads! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I'm pleased to be guest blogging on Love is an Exploding Cigar today :) Hearing readers' and friends' thoughts is a big part of what I'm all about. Communication is key to many things in our world :) The "friend" who flung the luck factor in my face actually invited my hubby and me to a barbecue bash this weekend. We are attending. I'm remaining open-minded about the comment. We'll talk about our love of reading romance and women's fiction and steer clear of the luck topic Thanks for your kind words and good wishes. Here's to us all achieving our goals and making our dreams come true. And we'll always accept a little luck coming our way :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Shawna Moore

I don't really think luck has anything to do with your success. I think its mostly hard work, but maybe sometimes like being in the right place at the right time is luck.

Hard Work

Hi, Stacy! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I've always associated luck and odds with gambling. I'm basically not a gambler. When it comes to my writing career, the only thing on which I'd possibly gamble would be writing in a new genre. That gamble could prove fun and rewarding, but I'd still put in the fun and serious hours to reach my goals. Hope you and yours have a great holiday time :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Hi Shawna!

I believe it's more hard work and persistence that will get you far. Luck, if you want to call it that, may have your manuscript on the right editor's desk on the right day when she is in the right mood. But you have to have worked hard and been persistent to get that manuscript written and queried and requested. Misty

Hard Work

Hi, Misty! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I couldn't agree with you more. Timing can prove a factor in the overall publishing process, but I'll always believe dedication and hard work will serve us far better in all our endeavors :) Plus, writing books is an enjoyable and rewarding career pursuit :) Enjoy your weekend! Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Luck to a certain extent, yes

A woman who has never written a word in her life has a dream, writes a manuscript, sends it in and a reader digs it out of a slush pile, sends it to the agent, who sells it, getting a $500,000 advance. Now, I've read the opening of this book and it's awful. Backstory, boring, trite. It's everything we, as writers, are told not to do. I've read where other writers have read this miracle of a book that is being made into a movie and they can't understand how a slow moving book could have garnered such greatness. Talent? Unique story? An agent looked at one of my books that I had written before this other came out and said she liked the way I handled mine so much better, but she didn't offer to represent it, didn't get me a $500,000 advance, movie rights, a book deal. The bottom line? Yes, I think to an extent, luck does play a part in it. John Grisham couldn't sell his book and self-published his first. He was friends with someone who was friends with a movie producer who offered to take a look at his mss. Now, he got a contract. Then after he got the movie contract, a publisher agreed to publish the book. Luck? You bet. If he hadn't had that friend who was a friend of a movie producer... Another situation, a girl has written a book...getting published isn't easy for anyone, getting an agent to represent you, is even harder. Her girlfriend's father is a literary agent and her girlfriend asks her father to take a look at it. He takes her on, helps rewrite her book and she's been publishing ever since. Luck? Sure, she wrote the book, she had the talent. Luck isn't all that matters. But if she hadn't had an agent helping her to rewrite the book she may never have been published. Here's another case, the boy's parents own a small print publishing house. They print the book and schedule him for a nationwide tour. Some kid reads the book, takes it to his father who is a friend of a big time publisher who picks up the book and it was made into a movie. Luck? You bet. The book is good, no doubt about it, but getting published is where the luck comes in to play. Another case was a woman who had sold her first book, never sold anything in her life before. She was asked to revise over and over and over again. When she asked why they bought the book, they said they liked the title. How many of us would ever sell based on a publisher liking the title? That they would take the time to work with us to rewrite what was written. This had more to do with who she was rather than what she'd written. Another case, the girl had copied from other author's published works. Because of who she was, she had been picked up, not because of what she had written. What about the man who was writing romance novels who wrote so poorly, all of his work had to be rewritten? But he had so many followers because he was a young man, not because of his writing. Middle-aged women who flocked to him who were interviewed even said so....to me this has more to do with luck (because not all male romance authors would have the draw) than to do with talent. :) On the other hand, I think some luck we make for yourselves. When a new line opens up, submit. A new agent is looking for new clients, check them out. Submitting ups your chances to sell. Writing more improves your chances to sell. Perseverence increases your chances to sell. In that way, you add to your own luck. :) And so with that, I say: May the luck be with you in everything you do because you have the God-given talent, just don't give up!

A Good Case for Luck

Hey Terry! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! You've presented an excellent case where luck played a role in peoples' lives and in their publishing successes. This topic could become a great debate :) As a child I once found a four-leaf clover and kept the treasure wrapped between two sheets of wax paper. While on a family vacation one summer, I spent some of my allowance on an adorable bright red change purse covered in flowers--one of those purses you squeeze to open. I tucked my clover in there and kept the purse inside a sassy little striped shoulder bag with a chain-link strap. I toted that shoulder bag everywhere :) When I reached my teen years, the clover and I somehow became separated--although I suspect it may still be lurking in a certain drawer at my parent's home. But, you know, I maybe should focus on the fact that clover possibly brought me some good fortune since? It simply took time for the good luck to manifest :) Good things come to those who wait :) I was fortunate enough to embark on a writing career full-time. My real-life hero is still with me after over 13 wonderful years. I'm able to share my stories with readers. My friends and family are always there in support, no matter what. So, thanks to your positive case for luck in our lives and careers, I will credit luck with playing somewhat of a role :) And if I find that clover, I'll stop shutting its magic between two tiny sheets of folded wax paper :) You're right--we can do things that immprove our chances of getting published and of garnering interest in our work. Remaining focused on what's happening in ones chosen field helps tremendously. It's all about keeping the faith and not surrendering to those self-doubt demons. They may bite from time to time, but I'm all about biting back :) Many thanks for your kind words. I'm tenacious, even more so when it comes to something I love doing. Hmmm. Maybe I will enter that swimming competition this weekend? If nothing else, my metabolism will be boosted and ready for the barbecue meal :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Hi Shawna, Good blog topic.

Hi Shawna, Good blog topic. Writing is hard (and wonderful and delicious) and requires tough love and dogged persistance. I think there must be a small amount of talent, too. Grin. As for luck....well, there's both good and bad luck. I think a wee bit of good luck never hurt, as in being in the right place at the right time. I had a similar comment made when talking to a friend about writing fiction. She said, "How are you going to do That?!" I let it pass. Negative energy is too draining. lol Now, I'm off to an enchanting little place called Whitevale for a spring fair. Doesn't that sound magical? Just swinging by to say HI. helenb.

Negative Energy

Hi, Helen! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I agree about the negative energy. We all have enough of that already swirling around in our lives. I'm prepared to spread some sunshine and good vibes at the friend's barbecue. I'm a people person and believe my positive mood can influence others :) The friend and her husband have a pool and always host a swimming competition. Not sure whether I'll participate or not. But I will be diving deep into another set of edits on a historical erotic paranormal romance on which I'm working. Simply because it's the holiday weekend doesn't mean I won't be working a little bit :) Writing, editing, researching and interacting with readers are all happy pursuits for me, and it's pleasurable putting in extra time to achieve goals and bring stories to readers :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Hi Shawna, I hope your

Hi Shawna, I hope your having a relaxing Memorial Weekend. I think I'll always believe in luck, even when luck is not on my side. Some day I'll find my niche in life and I think luck will be there pushing me along. Hugs, Danette http://nenscl.blogspot.com

I'm a Believer

Hi, Danette! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Okay, now one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands is cycling in my brain. How I love listening to the Monkees :) Mood boosting music IMO :) You are right in that we should all believe--whether that belief be in luck or something else :) Beliefs spur us on during the toughest of times. And if we persistent, our odds of success are vastly improved :) May you reach your goals and realize your fondest dreams :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Luck

Hi Shawna, I really believe basically what you put out there is what you receive. I think we have grown accustomed to having things quickly and so maybe waiting for that thing you want more than anything makes us think we're not lucky when it takes a little longer. Maybe that sought after thing turns into something else down the road as a surprise. It's all good. Your friend needs to train her mind differently. What she deems as success is empty. I have a feeling if I asked her to describe to me what success is she would answer, a mansion, expensive car, 2.5 kids, etc. As we know, success is much deeper than material things. You rock, love your stories and bright positive attitude in life! (off to drool over that picture of the hockey guy again!:)) Kelly

Getting back what we give

Hi, Kelly! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Absolutely, I believe we reap what we sow in life and in our literary pursuits. I've found goals on which I've worked hardest to achieve yield a far richer reward than those that have come more easily. Instant gratification is something many seek. Not me. Achieving my writing goals, and the goals I've set in regard to my marriage, are far more precious to me than material possessions. Material possessions are often lost. But I can never lose the self-gratification gained from reaching certain personal and career goals :) Many thanks for your kind words, and I'm really glad you enjoy my stories :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Lucky Shawna

Hey Shawna, I'm having some bad luck here! I keep getting bounced. I know I'm doing something wrong but this is my third message! I also have bad luck in my choice of publishers. But I don't let that get me down or keep me from pursuing my dreams. As I said to dh the other day, "This comes with the territory." And you Shawna, the hardest working author I know, inspire me to keep plugging. You might have arrived at where you are now by hard work and persistence, but your readers all love you. And that makes you one lucky lady. My blog will be starting soon, THE TRANSPLANTS from downhome to downtown, with my critique partner, Karen who was born in the country, lives in the city. Me--the other way around. I'll keep you informed Shawna and we'll definitely link! Here's to a great weekend for you, your dh, and all your friends. Enjoy! Pet. Who's leaving Thursday for a long trip North to visit relatives (two graduations) and I just might give Shawna a call!

LUCK

When the individual has a dream and is strong enough and determined enough to strive for his goal then he will succeed. Luck certainly has an influence upon the outcome but initially you have to persist and then you can achieve. Sometimes it takes longer than we would like but if we believe in our abilities then it can happen.

Words of wisdom

Hi, Traveler! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Your words are quite wise and ring true. If we don't strive toward reaching our goals, we've only ourselves to blame. My beloved mother eventually succumbed to lung cancer, but her spirit remained indomitable throughout her physical trials. While caring for her I decided then and there that life is far too short to waste it worrying "what if?" Here's to reaching our goals and making those dreams become reality! Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Let's banish that bad luck here and now

Hi, Pet! Thanks, so very much, for stopping by to comment :) I've always cherished your friendship and support over the years. You have the best outlook on life and in regard to your career. We can't succeed if we let setbacks permanently get us down! I know your focus won't sway :) I truly appreciate your kind words and compliments. Sharing my stories with readers is, indeed, a blessing and great happiness. Definitely keep me posted on your blog. You have a great sassy authorial voice that will translate well to blogging :) Can't wait to see what you come up with :) May you and yours also have a fabulous holiday weekend. Safe travels on your way up North. Keep in touch. We'll have to celebrate friendship and our love of reading and writing one of these days soon! Friends always, Shawna

GOOD LUCK

There has to be an equal amount of hard work, and strength of character to continue to push through any adversity that might occur when a goal has to be realized. Luck is soemthing that can happen and is attrubited to many successes but without the talent and capability nothing would happen. So many people work hard to get to their pot of gold but few attain that due to so many problems.

Couldn't agree more

Hi, Beach! Love your philosophy. Definitely luck can happen but it isn't something on which we should rely if we want to achieve success. If we waited for luck, or relied solely on luck, we would miss myriad chances at achieving many of the things that would bring us happiness and self-satisfaction :) And we never have control over the many unknown factors in life. Sometimes nothing we do overcomes the obstacles, but we still give it our best shot and appreciate if luck comes along for the ride once in a while :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

LUCKY

Being lucky is not a myth but it can happen to many people. They have an aura and it shines upon them. Maybe they give out positive vides and are charismatic and welcome this fortunate combination of circumstances. The majority of people though have to work diligently and never achieve their sought after wishes. It is as though we are overlooked but if we do stick to it, work hard, and have integrity we should be rewarded. Not always unfortunately. Many times it depends upon timing, meeting the right people at the right time and taking advantage of these special combination of factors.

Born Lucky

Hi, Pearl! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! You're right. Many factors come into play with achieving success. What's the right combination at one time may not be at another. I've known people who seem to have been born lucky. But I've never seen them lucky in all aspects of life. Many of them are either lucky and have lots of material possessions and lack love and happiness or vice versa. Still, there likely are some who fit that mold of having everything. I've many things for which I can count my blessings. While I may consider myself lucky to have or have achieved these things, I still have a hard time connecting with such an elusive thing as luck. It is such a hard creature to catch--even harder to hold on to. One analogy might be the much-ballyhooed brass ring on the merry-go-round. Many times when I've touched its cool metal surface, someone either sped up the ride, applied a layer of grease or a combination of both :) That's why I'll never rely on luck alone. I definitely agree there are cases when meeting the right people at the right time can change what might have been a negative outcome into a positive one :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

LUCK AND MORE

Being an optimist and possessing talent and drive bring more than enough luck for the aspiring writer, actor, or business person. Acting upon this with something unique and appealing can seal the deal. In other words if you bring something special to the table and it is so attractive then how can it but be a success. Many have luck but spoil it with their greed or their poor attitude. So many things play into being lucky and successful.

Spoiling an other positive situation

Hi, Principessa! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! You've touched upon two elements those of us engaged in the pursuit of the Creative Arts must employ--the unique and the appealing. Publishing is subjective. Readers have expectations and we authors must deliver those expectations but provide that special something that sets our work apart from the rest. We must brainstorm fresh twists, employ a unique narrative voice and plot devices that become part of our signature. In a competitive market, hard work, dedication and luck still might not deliver us if we don't bring something different that still holds, or is anticipated to hold, mass appeal. Poor attitude can only kill creativity IMO. Negativity erodes and is counterproductive. That's why, despite setbacks, I remain focused on my goals and how much I love writing. Smiles across the miles, Shawna

I think it is a little bit

I think it is a little bit of everything that works for some authors. Sometimes with things it is being in the right place at the right time and sometime it is persistence that pays off.

The Right Combination

Hi, Irwirum! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! The combinations for success are many. If only we all had the special gift/insight to know which combination best fit each goal, that would be fabulous :) But then it would lessen the impact and joy of the goal once we achieved it IMO. Would we want to become visionaries and flawlessly chart our course in order that all goals are obtained? Or would we prefer the element of surprise and utter satisfaction when goals are achieved by a combination in which we invest and believe? :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

LADY LUCK

Luck is a very elusive quality that most discount, but I think that it does have an importance in everything that we do in life. The timing, the place and the people all count. Most people have to realize that their own hard work, their principles and their drive is also an essential ingredient in this entire universe. Otherwise why are some so successful and make it look easy while others take much longer to achieve their dreams.

Excellent Points

Hi, Guido! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Indeed, many elements come into play in ensuring success and achieving goals. It is said timing is everything, and I've found that to hold true in many instances. But those instances have often been ones where I have pretty good control over the situation and outcome. Since timing can be knocked off kilter despite my best intentions, and luck can remain elusive despite my beckoning, I've always concentrated on working hard, treating others fairly, and forging ahead although setbacks may try to stall me. I'm one who mostly embraces the concrete--although I love abstract art. And I adore creating fantasy/fictional worlds and characters that can also be considered an abstract and open for individual reader interpretation. With my keeping logs of time spent on my writing career, I have tangible evidence of my dedication. Then, I simply hope and pray my timing is appropriate and luck will help things on the way if necessary :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Just a note ...

For folks interested in trying to win the contest, remember, you have to be registered here at Cigars, so a reminder on that note. It's easy, and we do that to avoid spam, mostly, but also to encourage folks to feel like part of the group, and I hope we'll see you often. :)

Shawna, what's that whole thing? Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration? ;) Luck is always nice, but without hard work to back it up, it won't get us far.

Sam

Formula for Success

Hi, Sam! I'll vouch for your formula :) Lots of sweat is necessary to achieve goals. Luck is always welcome, and we can all wear it well, but it's transparent and we need something else on underneath to pull off the total look--like hard work and dedication :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

being ready for luck

Well despite the tales of serendipitous movie rights etc, I think they are the 'exceptions that prove the rule'. Sure, some people get lucky. But for the vast majority, it is years of hard graft. To begin with you have to have a halfway decent story. Maybe it might not be brilliantly written, but there's an x-factor that appeals to an audience. (There's a historical fiction writer who I find mind-numbingly boring, with a painfully small vocabulary, backstory dumping and lame plots - who has a shelf full of published works.) I think sometimes you have to be in the right place at the right time: if you were a computer geek 30 years ago, you'd be doing well; nowadays, you're one of millions. That sort of timing is luck, I'll agree. But you also have to be prepared for luck. That chance meeting with the a-list agent won't help you if you haven't got a polished manuscript waiting to send her, a snappy pitch and a business card in your pocket. The catchy idea that might be the Next Big Thing is going to go stale if you can't write the book and get it submitted within a few months. Someone else will have gotten in before you. The well-connected socialite looking for artwork for their new appartment won't buy your work if it isn't on the gallery walls. I reckon, anyhow.....

Serendipity

Hi, Euripides! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Great post :) Absolutely, serendipity is wasted if one cannot act appropriately upon it and follow through in other aspects. No invention is going to land a patent and prestige if the inventor wasted time in conducting research, assembling materials and conducting trials. When he files for a patent he'll likely find someone else beat him to the patent office. Making the most of time and treating each second as a gift will allow the creative person a jump on competition if he has something unique to offer. There are only so many storylines, but it's up to us authors to put fresh spins on them or rework the setup in such a way the story lands solid approval. For those of you who are unpublished and reading these blog posts, I strongly urge you to make the most of the time you have for writing. Many authors are working outside the home and also raising a family, so this limits the time spent in pursuit of publication. Search your soul. Establish a game plan. Map out as little or as much time as you can. Don't let anything short of an emergency thwart your progress. Manage time. Don't let it manage you. As one who has always been a strict time manager, I learned an even more invaluable lesson when I was mis-diagnosed with cancer. I made a pact with myself I would do my utmost at fulfilling a list of goals I'd drawn up. I didn't make them ridiculously difficult to achieve. But I stuck to my course of action and accomplished some of them before it was determined I'd been mis-diagnosed. Nothing puts things into such a sharp perspective until your days have been numbered--or you think they've been numbered. Smiles across the miles, Shawna

wordy

funnily enough, I just realize that I said more or less what Sam said... except I took an extra three paragraphs to say it... *sheesh* Wow Shawna, being mis-diagnosed with cancer - how scary that must have been! And how relieved to find it wasn't what you thought. I fortunately have only a small insight into that when I was afraid I had it but tested clear. But having just turned 40, I do realize that my days are numbered. When you are younger, time seems to stretch before you forever. But now I have a strong sense of 'now or never'. We were talking about giving ourselves permission to write badly in another thread... I wrote a short story yesterday, majorly flawed - I could probably spend weeks rewriting it - but the few hundred words were enough for what it was, and I shared it with a few friends. Very satisfying!

No restriction on word count

Hi Euripides! As creatives types, we love playing with words, don't we? :) Sometimes we use more, sometimes less. But that's the beauty of communication. The variety of ways we achieve our goal of conveying our thoughts to others is fantastic. And we aren't restricted by word counts in those communications :) The cancer scare was unlike any other in my life to that point. But one very good thing resulted from something that otherwise held only badness--my boyfriend at the time proved himself a real-life hero and stuck by me at a time when I most needed him. He proved how much I meant to him. That man has been my husband for eleven years and we've been together over thirteen years. My mother and he made all the difference during that trying period of time. If not for my loving and positive emotional and physical relationship with my husband, I couldn't be writing romances or erotic fiction. In my authorial case, I must live and experience much of the romantic and sensual things about which I write. I applaude you and others for simply sitting down and writing something. Anything. There are always revisions you can make. But you cannot revise words that were never written :) I'm glad sharing your story delivered satisfaction. For me, sharing my stories with family, friends and readers is also a richly rewarding experience :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

LUCK AND DRIVE

We can strive and accomplish through sheer will and hard work but many perceive this as a lengthy road to achieving our goals. I wish thast there was another easier way for us to become overnight successes. Luck plays an important role in this many times, if we are fortunate to meet with the right circumstances and the interested party as well. But unless we are handed a legacy and have the right connections normally our own grit is the only way to succeed.

Grit and Goals

Hi, Ellie! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Grit is a great term to connect with goals :) I've never been fond of fast wins or quick fixes. Of course, if I had a chance at overnight success, I wouldn't turn down such an opportunity. But I prefer a journey involving trials and many decision-making moments. Working hard for what I want and believe in makes the reward so much sweeter. Guess that's why I waited and searched so long to find my real-life hero as opposed to settling for second best or inflated promises from a handsome frog that would have never been fulfilled :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Luck

I think that there are times we are luckier than others. However, I think that success is more a result of effort than luck. Luck is a fickle thing and hard to predict so you cannot count on it. Rather you shoulc count on what you can achieve through your own blood sweat and tears.

Fickle thing called Luck

Hi, Cherie! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! For certain, luck is fickle at best. I've often joked with my hubby that I'm pretty good at hiding from luck :) On the occasions luck has found me, I've rejoyced. But I prefer working hard when it comes to reaching goals and achieving certain things in life. The harder won something is--the more sweat involved--the more I celebrate when I earn that success. While I can't count on luck, I know I can always count on myself to dedicate 100% effort toward meeting goals and making dreams become reality :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna

Hi Shawna. I agree with you.

Hi Shawna. I agree with you. I believe in making your own luck with hard work and persistence. It's kind of like being born rich compared to working hard to get where you are. Not that I wouldn't appreciate family money. Working hard for success is part of the joy we find at the end. Sometimes it's the journey not the destination that rewards us. Congratulations on all the hard work that has brought you your current success. Sue

Journeys

Hi, Sue! Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Thank you for your kind words and congratulations. A career in writing has brought me immense happiness :) I liken the journey to publication (and continued publication)to vacations. I savor the moments along the way. The breathtaking sidebars. The exhilarating times when you've made a decision and the resulting fun is enough to fill several memory cards. Of course, it's always wonderful getting back home. There is no place like home (many thanks for those profound words, L. Frank Baum). But what do I do once I get home? Even while I'm unpacking, doing the laundry and getting things back on a regular track? I reflect on the journey just completed :) Same thing with my writing career. Holding those contracts brings the utmost joy. But after signing them, I always look back on what I did in order that the contract was delivered :) Smiles across the miles, Shawna
