Vampires, Lycans and Witches, Oh My!
Halloween is one of my favorite events. Not only do I get to eat the candy that my darling daughter worked so hard for by going from door to door to door, yelling Trick or Treat, but I get to submerse myself in the supernatural by watching scary movies.
Well, not so much as scary as really cool. I prefer vampire movies to slasher types. Although I still think the original Halloween is one of the scariest ever made. Not sure if I’m going to watch it this time. Might be too scary for me at this age. When I was younger I loved anything that would scare the begeesus out of me.
Some of my favorites that I have seen a dozen times or more and will continue to watch them over and over again some more…
The Craft – witches
The Covenant – boy witches
Lost Boys
Dracula – with Gary Oldman
Fright Night
The Faculty – okay not vampires or creepies, but aliens, but I love it
– Gerard Butler, need I say more?
The Curse – werewolves
A Werewolf in London
Shaun of the Dead – best zombie EVER
My latest book Veiled Truth has all of the above and more. Well, not zombies or aliens, but you never know with the next one. This story is about a powerful witch named Lyra Magice, who is head-strong and independent, and ends up meeting the one man, a French dhampir, named Theron LeNoir who knocks down the walls she’s built around her. Boy, do they battle.
To have a chance to win a copy of my latest book, Veiled Truth, tell me your favorite scary movie? Do you like to be scared?
You have to be registered at Cigars to win.

Welcome Vivi!
Nice you see you here again, and I loved your book! Just finished it last night -- very sexy stuff. :)
As for being scared - no! LOL I have always been a scary movie weenie, etc. As a kid I would not even watch Godzilla movies. I did like suspense, though, and mysteries, and they could be a little creepy, though not super violent or gross.
However, I did watch Silence of the Lambs -- that's my one scary movie I did like. In fact, watched it three times, and found it fascinating. It also wasn't terribly gross, which is my selling point, I guess.
I also love Buffy, which has some pretty scary episodes in the various seasons. Some creepy stuff, but I am such a softy on the scary stuff that I had to be sure about watching The Ghost Whisperer sometimes at night by myself, LOL.
I do love Gary Oldman, though... and have to agree with you on the original Halloween -- the way he keeps showing up in the first half, and then there was The Amityville Horror, which I let my ex-husband talk me into watching, and it gave me nightmares (see why he's EX), and Poltergeist, which was scary, but cool, really.
Thanks for coming by -- great blog...
Sam
PS: Edited to add, just remembered Night of the Living Dead, which I was forced to watch in 7th grade assembly, since PC didn't exist back then and that was the movie most of the kids voted to watch during an event and so we were all made to watch it. I think I slept with the covers over my head for weeks. On the other hand, I have fun times saying to dh now and then "If you loved me, you'd let me eat your brain..."
LOL
Hi Vivi!!
What a gorgeous cover...love the gothic feel of it! As Sam already knows, I love scary movies, and I'm a complete sucker for zombie flicks. My 14-year old daughter also loves horror, and one of our favorite things to do on a dreary weekend is to gorge ourselves on really scary movies. We loved Diary of the Dead, with gorgeous Canadian actor Shawn Roberts, and this past weekend we watched M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening, with Mark Wahlburg. I have to say it was a disappointment. But my daughter and I both love The Covenant, mostly because of Steve Strait, and partly because it takes place in Ipswich, MA, which is just 10 minutes down the road from where we live (although it wasn't actually filmed in Ipswich; I think it was filmed on the west coast somewhere). I'm a huge Gerard Butler fan, but have never seen The Faculty, so will need to take care of that this weekend! I think the scariest movie I've ever watched is The Exorcist, followed by The Ring.
Fun post!
Fright Night seriously
Fright Night seriously shaped me into the woman I am today.
Srsly.
:)
I love scary movies. I just watched The Messengers, which made me scream aloud, but in a fun way!

Favorite scary movies
Hi Vivi. Good to see you here. Two movies that I liked are on your list: The Craft and The Covenant.
Hi Vivi!!!
Oh, I totally fell in love with Theron! And I'd probably have jumped him. Lyla has way more control than I do, lol.
I'm a scary movie wuss. I've been riddled with nightmares since infancy, lol. When I was ten, I got it in my head to burn them out with every scary movie ever made.
I didn't sleep for three years, lol.
I gotta admit, the original Halloween was more a suspense than a slasher, before all the undeadness was involved. I still love that movie. I actually liked "The Happening" too, though that wasn't supposed to be a horror movie either. (You gotta admit, the car crash was impressive deathness.) The Freddy movies wrecked me, I must admit. A kid who couldn't sleep without nightmares watching movies about things that kill you in your sleep, lol. Not my smartest move.
But the king scary moment? Thriller. I STILL can't watch it without horrible nightmares for weeks.

The Wuss
I'm a wuss, too
I like to read about scary things but I can't see them on the screen. The last "scary" movie I saw, and I don't know if it would meet your criteria, was The Exorcist. OMG.
I saw it by myself, late one night, and had to call my dad to meet me at the theatre to follow me back to my place.
I know the Linda Blair head spin, pea soup spewing is now the stuff of mockery but it scared the snot (and everything else) out of me.
But I can read about witches, weres, vamps, no problem.

Scary Movie
My favorite scary movie is Emily Rose, that movie really freaked me out!

Scary scares me!
Hey, Vivi!
I'm not a horror movie fan. I prefer more cerebral horror, a la, The Others, than to slasher stuff. But give me a good vampire movie any day. And the Underworld series rocks. Michael Sheen as a werewolf? Num! Can't wait for the third in that series.
Samantha you make me shiver when you say Silence of the Lambs wasn't too gross. AGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! That movie ruined me. I mean, ewww! I didn't even see it in the theater, saw it on TV (so you know the gross stuff was cut out), but still it haunts me. And not in a good way. I can still see that woman's finger nail on the wall of the pit in the basement. AGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

Movies
I always thought the first Halloween movie as one of the best scary movies they ever made. I still get a kick out of watching it.
After reading Mahina's Storm
I was quite captured by the world you created in Necropolis and dowloaded Blood Secrets and Dark Lies right away.
About 6 months ago afriend got me to watch Silent Hill. I found that to be a spooky film.
Silence of the Lambs was
Silence of the Lambs was great. I'm not much into scary movies, but have seen a few - The Shining, Pyscho, The Birds (I still get creeped out when I see a row of blackbirds all across telephone wires outside). Another was Helter, Skelter, especially because it's true.
Pam P
Hello all!
Thanks for all coming over and chatting with me about spooky stuff.
I admit The Exorcist is one movie I cannot watch. It is waaaaaaaaaaaay too scary for me. Amittyville Horror is another that creeps me out. Maybe it's because they are supposedly based on true events.
Although the remake with Ryan Reynolds, I did watch. :-) But hey, its Ryan Reynolds.

I would never watch The
I would never watch The Exorcist either, even though friends tried to get me to go with them when it came out. The Amityville Horror I did watch on late-night TV once when I was bored. Even though supposedly true, it was found to be a hoax after it came out.
Pam P
I don't like to be scared,
I don't like to be scared, so I don't watch scary, or any other, movies.
The Exorcist
"The Exorcist" is my favorite horror movie. I've seen it so many times and it never get old. I also like "The Ring" and "The Omen."
Shaun of the Dead!
Shaun of the Dead - I agree, best zombie ever!! The phrase "Sorry, Shaun...No, SORRY SHAUN" is still used regularly in our household, LOL! (That may be the scariest part!)
We're not big on scary movies. If we do, we tend to like the ones that let you imagination do the work, rather than the ones that show gore and leave nothing to the imagination.
One of the scariest movies I remember is Texas Chainsaw Masacre (not the newly redone one). Now, I giggle through it, but when I first saw it, late at night at a friend's house, it was scary!

scary movies
Hey Vivi,
There are few scary movies that "haunt" me to this day-- bwwahahah--sorry, it just spewed out...
I just bought MY fav on DVD-'The Shining" the original version with Jack and Scatman. It remains my all time fav fright flick of all time. "Lost Boys" runs close just for those lovable reckless teenage vamps, the kickin' soundtrack, and the humor of Haims & Feldman.
Take it back even farther? Bette Davis in "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte" --...to this day I will not sleep with my back to the edge of the bed.
I'm not into what I call the "hack-em ups" I prefer psychological flicks and oh, as far as current fare-- can anything top Underworld or Underworld: Evolution?
Fun topic!

The Shining...
I only ever saw the commercial, and THAT haunts me... LOL

I am a big chicken
The scarist movie I ever saw was I Was a Teenaged Werewolf and some alien movie with a green crawling hand. It was a midnight movie double header and I had girlfriends to walk me home from the theater and stay over for the rest of the night The next night my mom had to come sleep with me. When I was working as a waitress at a resort restaurant we all lived in a dorm and we all went to see Psycho. Needless to say our shower door which was in a hallway off of our dorm was always guarded from that time on. I did like Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte and A Shot in the Dark. I am going to come and meet you in Calgary on Friday. I don't read your books though so hope you won't mind.
I have to admit slasher
I have to admit slasher movies with gore may make me jump at the unexpected but they don't haunt me after I leave the theatre. I much prefer movies that deal with the psyche like Silence of the Lambs.
One of my favorite topics...
Hi Vivi Anna! Great blog! :)
My all-time favorite movie is the original Halloween. I've literally seen it more times than I can count, starting from when I was a little kid and I'd sneak up past my bedtime to watch it on cable. I love The Craft and have seen it many times - my favorite scary scene in it is when the snakes are crawling over the bathroom windows and coming out of the drains, etc. Snakes terrify me! Oh, and Sam, regarding the original Amityville Horror: I used to watch that as a kid and I was fine until the blood trickled out of the walls. Then I'd start crying. But I watched it over and over, anyway! LOL
Movies like The Exorcist and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre, however, are too much for me. Apparently, the (mostly) fearless child grew up to be a wuss.

Love Scary Movies!
I'm not so much a vampires person, but I love movies like "The Ring" and "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Hell House." I like the mild ones, the very scary ones, pretty much all of them, LOL.

LOL Sam...I stayed in an old hotel once in French Lick Springs, Indiana (now a Trump Casino I believe) -it was a writers conference over a weekend and I think we were about the only ones (live) there
this place has a history of its own and those who attended will verify that it reminded them of the Biltmore in The Shining--FYI--someplace I have GOT to stay one day..just because ;)
French Lick had these semi-dark loooong hallways with doors either side and doors at least ten feet tall. You could easily ride a big wheel down these suckers. IN my mind I could hear that sound as I walked to the other end of the hall where my room was....
We did a midnight tour on our own LOL going up to the floors where it was reported that ghosts had been seen by staff.
Needless to say--letting a small group opf authors loose in a elaborate, sprawling old resort hotel is going to spark the imagination!
The Sixth Sense is another good one, though its not deemed a scary movie--but whenever the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I think of that movie!
Shirley--and you have such a sweet face ;) who'd have thought you were into slasher flicks? LOL

Vampires, Lycans and Witches
The Covenant is one of my favorites as well.
All of those Japanese remakes are pretty creepy. I found myself inching away from the television the first time I saw The Ring and the girl was crawling out. There aren't many though that are truly scary.
Dracula - Gary Oldman (all I have to say is Yum!) I still adore him to this day because of that movie.

Vampires, Lycans and Witches
I also love The Covenant, lots of eye-candy.
All of those Japanese remakes are pretty creepy. I found myself inching away from the television when the girl started crawling out of the tv. Most movies these days are not particularly scary though.
Zombie type movies give me the heebie jeebies where corpses are re-animated or you can get infected by a bite and turn into a flesh-eating monster.

Hi Vivi
My favorite scary movie is Halloween. To this day I still get scared over that classic. Of course, I am a big chicken so it does not take much.

Hi everyone
I just met Vivi Anna. She is so gracious and so understanding. I got a book signed by her for Christa (see post above) I told her I didn't read nocturne and she remembered the post here. There were 5 other authors at the book singing ang Vivi Anna's books never showed up so she was reduced to signing the five books they had on their shelves. She was so understanding about all the problems. She also appologized for not being able to get in and reply to my post here.
Congrats to Sue A.
Thank you Vivi! Sam I just
Thank you Vivi! Sam I just sent you an e-mail!
Have a great weekend!
Scary movie
I'm not into really scary movies but I like to watch what could be considered silly scary movies like The Haunting. I used to love watching the USA up all night movies, cheesy scary camp killer movies where you knew it is horribly fake.
