Welcome Guest Author Tracy Wolff!
A couple of months ago, when I was doing my first booksigning for my erotic suspense, Full Exposure, a very nice man came up to me and asked me if he could bring his sixth grade daughter over to meet me. She loves to read and write, he told me, and it would mean a lot to her if she could meet a real, live author. Of course, I said yes, and the girl and I had a lovely talk about the books she’s been reading and the ones she’s hoping to read in the future.
About that time, her father reached for one of my books and asked if he could buy it for his daughter. Too which I responded, “Absolutely not! But it would make a lovely gift for her mother.” I did mention that Full Exposure is an erotic suspense, didn’t I? Somehow I didn’t think that very nice gentleman would appreciate what the book would teach his daughter . . .
The young girl went away with a handful of chocolate and an autographed bookmark instead of my book—along with an armful of books I’d recommended from the YA section of Barnes and Noble, and I think it was a good compromise. Even so, I couldn’t help thinking about when my mom gave me my first romance novel to read.
I grew up reading the stories of Judy Blume and L.M. Montgomery—the writer of the fabulous Anne of Green Gables series). I also loved, of course, the mysteries of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden, the Sweet Valley High series, the YA historicals that were titled simply with the main characters’ names, and the novels of Cynthia Voigt.
I loved reading so much that by the time I was in fifth grade, I’d read everything in the YA and classic sections of my local library. After a disappointing trip to the bookstore—one that had me in tears because I couldn’t find ONE book that I hadn’t read—my mother handed me one of her romance novels and said, “Here. Try this.”
I looked at this book with it’s lurid cover (this was in the heyday of 1980s historicals) and thought, why not? From the first page of that first book—Jude Deveraux’s The Velvet Promise (yes, I still remember it) I was hooked.
So hooked that I read it in one day and then devoured the next three books in the series in the same week. So hooked that I read and re-read it until both covers had ripped off and pages were falling out. So hooked that I raided my mom’s bookshelves every single night until I had read every romance she had in the house (we’re talking hundreds here). And the best part—every month, more Harlequins came out. More historicals hit the shelves. It was like a well that never ran dry and I couldn’t have been more thrilled!
Now, twenty-three years later, I came face to face with a young girl with the same love of reading and writing and happy endings that I have, and can’t help hoping that one day, someone will hand her a romance novel and that she’ll take it. And read it. And love it as much as I loved my first romance. That book won’t be Full Exposure (unless, of course, she wants to give her dear, sweet dad a heart attack) but I hope, whatever it turns out to be, that it makes her feel the same way that that Jude Deveraux novel made me feel.
So, tell me—if you can remember—what was the romance novel that hooked you on the genre? And if you can’t remember, I’ll settle for one that you’ve read and loved (as I’m always on the lookout for another great book.) Post a comment and be entered to win a copy of the Spice Anthology, Naughty Bits, which contains my story, "No Apologies".

Welcome Tracy!
I love your cover, and very happy to have you here today. :)
Great story about the bookstore, and it sounds to me like you handled it just right. I bet that dad may buy your book for himself or his wife anyway. :) I would. And I am an old Trixie Belden fan, too -- Nancy Drew was a given, but I actually liked Trixie more. I think it's why I am so hooked, still, on mystery and suspense. I also was a 70s TV detective show addict, LOL.
I can't remember the childhood romance that hooked me, though I started reading them around 12 years old, and read voraciously. All Harlequins. :) But then I didn't read romance for more than a decade, and went back to it in my 30s, and Nora was definitely my reader hook (I can't remember any one, just all of them), and my inspiration for writing, along with Cara Summers, a Blaze author whom I also taught with at the time here in Syracuse. I remember being so stunned to know a real romance author, right in my own teaching department, and then it really kicked in that I could try this. So... my reading and writing kind of all mingled together. :)
Sam
I loved Trixie Belden, Sam.
I loved Trixie Belden, Sam. She was so much cooler than Nancy in my opinion. Thanks so much for having me here today-- I really appreciate it.
First Romance book
Dont know if it really is considered a romance book, but Sandra Brown's Exclusive. It hooked me to all her other books and had to get my hands on all of her holder romances.
Sanda Brown is great, isn't
Sanda Brown is great, isn't she? And she only lives a couple hours a way from me ...
For me it wasn't romance...
...but Tai Pan and Shogun and all those old James Clavell novels. Also Hawaii, Alaska, etc--all the old Michener novels. I didn't read a romance until Susan Elizabeth Phillips, First Lady. Still my favorite romance novel of all time.
It's fascinating how those old novels read at a *magical* age make an impact. I remember those books better than books I read last week.
Amazing, isn't it, how books
Amazing, isn't it, how books that made in impact when you were young stay with you? I still remember all the names of the characters, etc. in those early romances I read.
Oh yeah!
I *loved* the John Jakes North and South series...

LaVyrle
Uh oh...I thought LaVyrle Spencer was your first? When I write the definitive Diana Holquist biography I'm going to need to have my facts straight. ;-)
(LaVyrle's Morning Glory was one of my first loves in the genre. )
Hi Tracy.
Hi Tracy. I have been reading romance novels since I was a preteen. The romances that hooked me on romance were Harlequin Presents by Penny Jordan, Carol Mortimer and Ann Mather.
I've been reading Presents
I've been reading Presents since I was a kid--to this day, I love Lynne Graham's books.
I blame my Mom
In my late teens, she used to check out all the Harlequin Presents from the bookmobile. She'd finish one a day. I used to read them after her.
I know-- my mom finally gave
I know-- my mom finally gave up and let me read the books first since it used to take her longer than it did me. Thank God for moms ;)
Like many others
I started with Harlequins (or in my case, Mills & Boon). Since I read my first one 38 years ago, I'm afraid I no longer remember the title but I do remember that her name was Eleanor and his was Kenneth. She was hired as a secretary for his father while all of them were on a cruise.
I can even picture the cover in my mind but I can't pull up the title or author.
Then I went to college and put away romances. Fast forward to my forties and someone gave me a copy of Ransom by Julie Garwood. Oh. My. G-d. I couldn't, and still can't, get enough of romance since then. And, upon further reading, Ransom isn't even the best of Garwood's books but it is the one that hooked me.
And there's been no looking back since then!
ani
Julie Garwood is a great one
Julie Garwood is a great one to get re-started with, isn't she. My first romance authors were Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught, Elizabeth Lowell, Nora Roberts, Linda Lael Miller, SEP, Jayne Anne Krentz-- when I met most of them at my first conference I almost had a heart attack--LOL!
Signet Regencies
Hi Tracy!
Nice to see you here today. :-)
My mom and I shared the Signet Regencies. I have a set of Mary Balogh books that I treasure.
I contend that my first romances were the Black Stallion books, though. They had the strong silent hero and the conflict, etc. Actually, after I graduated from the Black Stallion, I read a lot of Louis L'Amour and Max Brand westerns. It's a very small step from them to romance.
My mom looooooves Regencies
My mom looooooves Regencies and my dad read every Louis L'Amour book ever written-- so I grew up with both. And I agree, not much difference between the happy endings . . .
Hey Tracy!
I've always read so much and so much romance, that's it's impossible to really remember the hooker that got me in for good. I'm guessing VC Andrews doesn't really count, but she's why I started reading (cough, and writing) sagas and series. She doomed me. Oh, one that I don't care what anyone says, it's a romance...Dean Koontz "Whispers". That was a romance to ME and an awesome book to boot.
But, er, wow, thinking back no wonder I scared people with my reading choices. Koontz usually isn't a good idea for a pre-teen, lol.
Dee
(who totally would have snuck your book anyway.)
Hey, Dee :) I think VC
Hey, Dee :) I think VC Andrews inspired a lot of people-- men and women. She had some truly fabulous stories. I haven't read Whispers, but I'll pick it up on my next trip to B and N-- thanks for the tip. I remember reading Linda Lael Miller's Corbin series to my friends at my 7th grade birthday party-- I'm not sure if they were more impressed or shocked--LOL! And I would have snuck your books as well, Dee ;)
Well...
I've been reading for a long time, and I have a terrible memory. This is just to say that I don't remember which romance first hooked me--I know I started with stuff like Sweet Valley High and Silhouette First Love. And a geometry classmate lent me a grown-up romance in high school, and that was a new world ;) I did take a bit of a break in college, but stumbled across Jennifer Crusie's Tell Me Lies at the library and I was hooked all over again. I've collected most of the rest of her books since--very re-readable stories :)
Hi Fedora, I know what you
Hi Fedora,
I know what you mean about Jennifer Crusie. I really liked her newest one with Bob Mayer-- Agatha and ... I can't remember the title, but the heroine was truly fabulous. And I just read Welcome to Temptation and Fast Women-- both are on my keeper shelf.
Thanks for sharing!
I recall two books that hooked me on reading romance many years ago; both passed on to me by my sister. The first was Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and the second, a romantic fantasty novel, House of Scorpio by Pat Wallace. Very different novels but I loved them both at the time. I tried to re-read Shanna a few years ago but didn't have the patience so I guess my tastes have changed. Still, I'm so glad I picked them up when I did.
I'm ashamed to admit I've
I'm ashamed to admit I've never read Kathleen Woodiwiss-- since I've read just about everyone else, it seems like I should have at some point. Shame on me. House of Scorpio is a great title-- what was it about?
House of Scorpio
It's about a society whose citizens have certain traits based on the zodiac. There are six sisters, most of whom don't know about the others because they are orphaned, and their stories all tie together. Only the older ones remember their lost sisters. The children were sent to various orphanages based on their star charts. I misplaced my copy and had a hard time finding a new one without paying an arm and a leg!

Woodiwiss
Tracey, I couldn't remember what I had read of Ms Woodiwiss books before so I went to read one and realized I read it before then tried another and read that too. So thing is is that I didn't remember or even log down what I read like I do now. Hers are rich historicals and I remember with a re-read some were sagas. I too know I read a few Georgette Heyers and recently re-read one and it was so wonderful! THE BLACK MOTH. I actually too started Pride and Prejudice again tonight. I haven't read since HS (long long ago) LOL.
My first erotic romance book I remember was Jaid Black's POSSESSION. I got hooked on her and many authors since!
Judy Blume
Tracy, when I was teaching elementary school, I always read-aloud to my second graders, Judy Blume's Tales of a Fourth-Grade Nothing. One day one of these little girls in my class showed up with Judy Blume's Forever. (The story of a teenage girl losing her virginity for those not familiar with it.) I grabbed the book from her, and penned a note to her mom, telling her I hope she didn't think I was overstepping my bounds as a teacher, but that she really MIGHT want to read the book herself before she let her daughter read it.
The mother was flabbergasted, having assumed that if it said Judy Blume on the cover, it was a "kids" book. She thanked me. I'm sure the mother of that young girl would thank you, too.

That's hilarious, Susan. I remember reading Forever-- but not in 2nd grade, LOL!
Julie Garwood
Hi Tracy,
I was introduced to in high school by my older cousin's friend. She lent me a copy of Julie Garwood's "The Bride" and I was hooked. After I did my homework, I would spend the rest of the afternoon and night reading romances. I also enjoyed Jude's Velvet series. Other early favorites include Judith McNaught's "Once and Always" and "Something Wonderful."
Something Wonderful is still
Something Wonderful is still one of my favorite books. That's another one I had to buy my mom second copies of because I read hers so much it literally fell apart.
authors
Didn't we all read Judy Blume? I loved her books (still do). My first 'romance' was Carly Phillips' "The Bachelor" (a Ripa book club selection). Now, I am totally hooked. My husband laughs at the covers...I don't really care.
I remember The Bachelor--
I remember The Bachelor-- and the Ripa book club selection. It was a good book :)
ripa books
That's also how I found Vicki Lewis Thompson.
I have been reading romance
I have been reading romance books for over 50 years. I got hooked on romance reading Barbara Cartland books.
My mom still remembers
My mom still remembers Barbara Cartland fondly. I've never read one, but give her all the props in the world!
Long Flights
I used to be a sales rep for the West coast and I would go out there almost every week. I'd get on these long flights, with long layovers and I always picked up a book. I didn't read romance...I read John Sanford and Nelson DeMille, those kinda guys, Thomas Harris, serial killer and spy thillers. Then one day I picked up a romance. I started with Joanna Lindsay and liked her sexy scenes but I feel in love with Romance when I read Nora Roberts' Inner Harbor series. That is still one of my favorite series. BTW, my favorite Sandra Brown is WHERE THERE'S SMOKE...Put me in the drawing please Ms. Wolff.
Hey there, Dede ;) I too
Hey there, Dede ;) I too love the Inner Harbor series-- especially the fourth one, Seth's story. Although Cam's story was pretty darn hot, as well. Of course, you're in the drawing.
Angel's Caress by Deana

I liked those Kensington
I liked those Kensington anthologies as well-- Shannon McKenna had a great story in one, about the guy on the motorcycle chasing the girl in the old truck. It was a really sexy story ...
Wow, i've been reading
Wow, i've been reading romance for so long that i cant really remember the first book that hooked me. I'm sure it was one of my mothers harelquins, either that or one of her early janet Daily sagas. I just remember falling in love with love, and the happy ever after.
I remember one that i kept re-reading, but cannot remember the writer or title. But it was a short category set on a refurbished southern plantation. The hero owned the plantations, and the heroine was visiting (Why i cannot remember) but what i do remember is the love scene that happend in a chicken coupe. I know it sounds weird, but the old very large coupe had been remodeled and had a secret swimming pool inside, it was so cool. I kept reading it until it fell apart.
Now i read everything i can get my hands on, theres always a romance in my purse. And on occasion a John Saul or dean kootnz as well. Dee, never read whispers yes, will have to pick that one up.
good post.
jody
Hi Tracey!
Oh I know it was a Victoria Holt Gothic romance book! See I discovered hers and had to read ALL of them! I really think it was THE SHIVERING SANDS. I too loved her first book that was recently re-released after many years, THE MISTRESS OF MELLYN. She had lots of those set in castles and governesses and so much more!
Love chatting about romance reads!
Sandra Brown's Texas Trilogy
Sandra Brown's Texas Trilogy got me hooked for sure.
