Trick or Treat??? Nuh uhn
Seriously – I had to run into Target tonight to replace a computer program for my daughter (she rolled over the disk with the office chair–oops) and was shocked to see the store decked out for Halloween. What’s the date again??? Did I miss a month? It’s bad enough that time is running faster than I can keep up, but school just started and I’m supposed to be worrying about snagging the good Trick or Treat candy and decorations already??!!??
I can’t believe it’s already that time (well, in retail land it is... and if we want a “good” costume, we have to start thinking about it now, while there are still any to be found. Even if we make one – getting the accouterments is hard after Oct 1). And I admit it, we do Halloween big here where I live. The entire court decorates their houses, we hold a pumpkin carving party and do special treats for the neighborhood kids. And we all dress up for trick or treat. Me, hubby, and both kids. Granted, the adult costumes aren’t nearly as inventive as the kids – and we do tend to recycle them year to year (hubby’s grim reaper is getting frayed at the hem LOL) but it’s still fun.
This got me to thinking about Karen’s post about Flights of Fancy and our dreams of what we’d like to be when we grow up. To carry that thread over... if you were attending a Halloween Party and could dress up as anything or anyone that would represent the INNER YOU... what would it be?

Inner me
It's amazing ,isn't it? School starts and Halloween candy is out. It's hard enough avoiding the regular candy aisle in the grocery store, but now it's all over the place!
My costume... it's a toss up between black leather and whip or ermine and crown, but the theme is the same. I want to be The Boss! LOL
All Hail
Holly, what about black leather and a whip, AND the ermine and crown. I'm all for combining fantasies!!!
Besides, I love the imagery of being the dominatrix in charge *g*
You mean the Christmas stuff hasn't started yet?
LOL It always drives me nuts how early it all starts -- a grocery store near us actually put out a disclaimed sign last year, explaining they were putting things out so early because some shoppers liked to shop early and beat the rush. I found it interesting that they must have had complaints, and so put out the sign. I frankly dislike the early Christmas pressure. The holidays drag on long enough. Personally, I enjoy Halloween and Thanksgiving, and could be set with those.
We are actually invited to a Halloween party this year, a costume deal, and haven't decided what to go as. I wanted to be M&Ms, since both of our names start with M (Sam is my pseud, for those of you who didn't know), But Mike doesn't want to deal with being big and round all night (I'm used to it, LOL). Well, maybe not THAT round.
So I don't know what we'll do. However, to answer your question, if I were to dress up as the inner me, I'd probably be... hmmm... that's difficult... I just swung from something like Sherlock Holmes or the Nutty Professor all the way to Sex Slut Demon in about three seconds of thinking about it. ROTFL. I'm conflicted, obviously. ;) Maybe I would go as a belly dancer, you know, all the veils and bracelets. I think that would be the inner me -- very different from the outer me, for sure. But as Buffy says, Halloween is "come as you aren't night."
Sam
Yum
I love M&M's. I made M&M costumes for my twin nephews once LOL. Its definitely a fun costume, and cushy!
Sam, I love the belly dancer costume angle. There is something so empowering and sensual about belly dancers - definitely the inner you, huh!!!
as for the retailers... GRRR. It drives me nuts and makes me feel so rushed. That said, I'm already doing my Christmas shopping LOL. I figure if I can be done by Thanksgiving, then I can just relax and enjoy the season.
Hmmm...
It's true, Tawny...the retailers really push those holidays. My stress begins in October, when all the stores begin displaying Christmas decorations! A
s for a Halloween costume that would display the inner me...my first thought was a fairytale princess, like Princess Lily (played by Mia Sara) in the movie, LEGEND, but quickly switched to Lara Croft of TOMB RAIDER, or Syndey Bristow of ALIAS. Yeah, definitely one of those, provided my body can look like theirs, too!!
Oooooh
Legend... with the incomarable Tim Curry, right? I LOVED that movie (this was before I thought Tom Cruise was bonkers LOL)
GREAT costume choices, Karen :-) VERY sexy.
Something sexy
Maybe a vampiress in black leather with one of those plunging necklines? Of course, I also admit I was thinking of a French maid costume because the stupid apron is so cute! Then I decided I didn't want to serve anyone.
I want someone to serve me. So I could go the princess route but that doesn't play to my inner sexy side (unless I'm missing something).
So I just ran this by a guypal and told him all the things I wanted and how I was having problems coming up with something sexy and where I would be served and he decided for me (with a sexy little chuckle, I might add).
So for Halloween, I want to be Cleopatra (but not the Liz Taylor version)!
ani
Just to shock the neighbors...
I'd dress up like a hooker! They would never expect that from me (they think I'm quiet, which anyone who REALLY knows me knows IS NOT AT ALL TRUE)!! The reaction would be priceless!
Of course, since I tend to leave the public ballsiness (new word!) to my heroines, I'd probably end up dressing up like a princess of some sort. Or a queen and doll up my daughter like a princess.
Anyhow, thanks for bringing this up, Tawny! I almost forgot that I've got another munchkin to dress up this year (too young last year). I suppose I should start looking for a costume for her since she loves "canny" and will definitely want to to trick-or-treating with her brothers.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!! :)
ROFL
I love the inner you being so ballsy she wants to shock the neighbors with your naughtiness. If I dressed up like a hooker, my neighbors would just laugh and ask hubby where his pimp hat was LOL.
Sassa, a queen is a great costume. I love the power of that, and the reverence. Bet your canny seeking munchkin would love to be a princess, too :-)
Mine wants to be a panther.
Cleo rocks
I'm a huge fan of Cleopatra-- I love that she's the inner you!!!
I think you're right about princesses not being sexy. AT least to me, I always think of them as sheltered and coddled (up in the tower, ya know?) And while the french maid would be uber-sexy, well... yeah, aprons give a very definite message.
So... Hail Cleopatra!!! Watch your asp *g*
Inner Me
I would be the inner me.
I hate to say this, but I have already seen some Christmas wrap and decorations in a couple of stores.
Ack
Say it ain't so... Christmas stuff, out already?
Ack.
I did see some scrapbooking stuff out the other day - a Making Memories kit to create coasters, and such. But that made sense. I mean, crafty items take time to create, you know? But decorations? *shudder*
btw, Estella... what IS the Inner You? :-D
Inner Me
The inner me is Aunt Bea from Mayberry!
Aunt Bea
Awwww, thats a really nurturing, comfy image!
Here kitty, kitty
I would love to dress to look like one of the characters from the musical CATS. I thought they were so beautiful of course i n my fantasy I would also look that good and be that flexible...LOL.
Pam
Our inner selves are bendy
that reminds me of a Friends episode when Phoebe is fake-seducing Chandler and tells him he's gonna like sex with her... she's bendy *g*
I think its amazing the variety of costumes our inner selves would take on! And I loved the costumes in CATS, too. So sleek and gorgeous. What a great choice.
Me Too
I too would love to be a cat. I'd want a thin body (yeah right) and have a tight black outfit, with my whole face painted, big whiskers and lots of ruffles all around my head. Of course I'd need a long, shwishy tail with attitude.
Definitely the tail
that'd make that inner costume rock, huh? I notice my cats use their tail to convey a whole range of emotion LOL. Think of the messages you could send!!!
Ha ha ha!
Ugh, honestly, I know I'm such a party pooper, but Halloween is probably one of my least favorite holidays of the year. I've never been much for coming up with a creative/clever/gorgeous/wonderful costume, and now that I have kids, the pressure's on to outfit them every year. Bleh. At least my daughter's easy this year--she's either a princess or a princessy ballerina (the more pink and frilly, the better!) :)
And seriously what's up with all the Christmas stuff out already?? People, it's only September! We just had Labor Day!!
Sorry, rant over, kind of! :D
Uh, for my inner-me-breaking-free costume, my usual slobby self in comfy sweats on a luxurious chaise with a stack of good books and matching pile of snacks?
Rant away
LOL I seriously do NOT get the Christmas stuff out already.
And I hear you on the costume fun. My youngest is NOT easygoing when it comes to costumes. She knows exactly what she wants. We can look at 50 costumes and if none are IT, she'll simply not go trick or treating. Now if she doesn't go trick or treating, how do I get candy? LOL.
Comfy sweats with a huge stack of books and snacks sounds wonderfully relaxing, Fedora.
The Inner Me
The inner me is very adventurous and willing to take on any challenge. I would be an astronaut for Halloween. Boldly going where no one has gone, exploring brave new worlds and civilizations, all the way to the edge of the universe. LOL

Space.. the final frontier
I'm a Trekki *g* I love the idea of exploring the universe, Jill!
What a fabulous inner costume ;-)
Christmas
I hate to break it to everyone, but Costco's been selling Christmas cards and wrap and lights since the second week in august. Already picked up my cards lol
I think I'd dress up like a playboy bunny, the stockings, the bunny ears... i think it'd be cute
hanging head in defeat
Since August?
Holy cow... why even take it down???
I love the playboy bunny costume!! The cute little bowtie and the whole look is uber symbolic. I have no idea why, but it always reminds me of Marilyn Monroe-era. Sexy, but cute :-)
Hi Tawny
Since I was born on Halloween, I guess I'd just be me. I've dressed up every year since I was little. I'm something different every year. This year I'm going to be a giant bag of jelly beans. As for the inner me? I'd want to dress up as a very rich, very good looking, very well built, VAMP, complete with spiked heels and leather miniskirt. Mads:)
Halloween Birthday!!
Mads!!! Happy early birhtday :-)
What a fun day to be born. I love Halloween bestest, so I'd get a charge out of yearly spooky parties. Of course, if thats what you do each year, it might get old? (does it?)
Tell me about the giant bag of jelly beans - I've seen a bag of grapes but not jelly beans
and Woot on the vamp. hubba hubba - love the image of the spiked heels and mini skirt (and I wont' tell you that as soon as I lose the 15 lbs I'm trying to drop that you just described my reward outfit LOLOL)
Hi Tawny
To be dressed as a giant bag of jelly beans, all you have to do is, blow up a lot of small round different colored balloons. Then get a very large clear plastic bag. Poke a hole in it to fit over your head, put the bag on over a pastel colored leotard and tights, fill the bag with the balloons, then tie it at the bottom around your legs. Complete the costume with a big bow on top of your head and you become an instant giant bag of jelly beans.
Of course it is impossible to sit down but, it creates quite a stir, especially if you wear a flesh colored leotard and tights underneath it.
Have fun this Halloween. It's the only time of the year when we adults can get away with acting like kids playing dress up and nobody minds how silly we look. Have a great week, Mads:)
I love it!!
What a fun costume idea :)
I do love playing dress up,too.
I've seen both Halloween and
I've seen both Halloween and Christmas "stuff" out on the shelves of various stores and I think it is rediculous for it to be out so early. They use to wait until after Thanksgiving to put out Christmas stuff. Sure it didn't give you as much time but we managed anyway. So I was alive in the dark ages. If I could dress up as something that represent the "inner me"? Hmmmmmm -- I guess it would be as a CSI.
CSI, huh?
Very intriguing inner you, Ellen ;-)
and LOL on the dark ages of Christmas stuff being regulated to after-Thanksgiving. Interstingly enough, its not so much how early stuff is out that drives me nuts, its that by the time I'm ready to go shopping for it, its simply NOT there. Want to get a halloween costume on Oct 20? No no, baby. None to be found. Holiday lights on Dec. 1? ha.
grrrr... what about us procrastinators? Its ruining the holiday season, I swear!!!
I have always thought my
I have always thought my inner me would be something like Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit:)
LOVE it
"I'm not bad... I'm just drawn that way."
*g*
I was just thinking about this movie last week!!! Toooo fun inner you!
Inner me!
It drives me batty how early the marketing is for holidays! I can see craft stores and fabric places going a little early because they sell things you have to take time to create. But grocery stores selling candy? Come on!! I don't want to think about Thanksgiving until after Halloween, etc.
My DH collects penguins and I collect Russ trolls. A couple years ago, we had a Halloween party where he dressed up as a penguin and I dressed up as a troll. We each carried around our favorite penguin/troll in our pocket, so we could show off the resemblance. I think that was pretty close to the inner me. :-D
Troll, huh?
Are Russ Troll's the ones with the hair? I'd love to see how you pulled that off LOL.
One year when I was in jr. high, I dressed up as the Bride of Frankenstein. To get my hair to do the look, we ratted, we sprayed, we glued. Seriously - we ended up using spray glue to get it to stand up (I've got a lot of hair). Now whenever I hear anything that requires hair-modifications like that, I cringe LOL.
Yep, those are the ones!
How did I pull it off? I had relatively short hair and it involved the use of a LOT of hairspray and spray hair color! LOL!
A couple of our friends got married a few years ago and they had a Halloween wedding. Everyone came in costume. She was the Bride of Frankenstein as well! They used cotton batting dyed brown to wrap her hair over. And then used spray and glue and spray and glue...just like you. She keeps her hair much shorter now, LOL!
I would go as a Gypsy!
I would go as a Gypsy! Free-spirited, feminine, strong and fun *g* Love all those gold bangles as well ;-)
Fun post!!
Glitters and sparkles
It's all about those bangles, huh?!
LOL - I love the inner gypsy and I can so relate, Beth!
I know what you mean!
It is horrible... after Halloween they put the christmas trees and decorations!
