Spring Cleaning
It's spring- yay! I love the season. The freshness and possibilities. That sense of a new beginning. My rose bushes are heavy with delicious smelling flowers, my lilacs lush and my iris bulbs are starting to open. The weather here in California is turning comfy warm (as in tee shirts and capris, but not quite shorts time yet) and I'm itching to be outside where I can relax, meditate and commune with nature.
So what do I do? I start my yearly - and completely involuntary since I NEVER intend it - spring cleaning insanity. Oh, it starts innocently enough. The coats are hanging three deep on the hall tree and the kids have outgrown the ones still in the closet, so why not clean the closet so I can hang the good ones up? And then there is the exercise equipment. Spring means summer is right around the corner, and with it shorts and *shudder* swimsuit season! Ack, gotta exercise. But that meant I had to tidy and rearrange that part of the bedroom. That, of course, led to cleaning the bedroom closet. Three huge trash bags filled with items to donate, I figured I was done.
Then I realized the school year is almost over and we've yet again accumulated piles of stuff we don't or won't need next year. So off I went to tear apart and reogranize the school desk & cabinet and the craft desk and cabinet. This project my husband says I'm doing just so I can hog up more cabinet space for my scrapbook supplies (they reproduce at a scary rate, ya know?). I should finish the family room and all its cabinets and desks today.
Then, unless I get the sick urge to rearrange the pantry, I think I'm done! Given that I never intended to do all this cleaning, how do I know I'm done? I'm sick of cleaning, which is always a good sign.
How about you? Are you a spring cleaner or do you keep up with things all year round? Or better yet, do you just ignore it all until you feel the urge, regardless of the season? And if you're like me, what is it about spring that makes us feel like we have to clean, even if we don't intend to?

As We Go
I'm sort of a clean as I go person, though the one thing I do in spring that I don't do other times is wash the windows -- it's always nice to get a winter's worth of fog and road dirt, etc off the glass and be able to see everything all clear and bright. Otherwise, most of our housework is routine, done once a week more or less. It has to be that way with 2 dogs and 2 cats puffing out hair all the time.
The things that my mom used to do for spring cleaning, like washing curtains, etc, I eradicate by not having curtains. *G* They're just dust catchers for those of us with allergies, so we have decorator UV shades, those honeycomb ones made of fabric, on all the windows instead...no cleaning. :)
Sam
Ongoing
Sam, as a rule we clean as we go, too. Like you, dogs, cats & kids have to be regularly kept up with or I'd be buried in fur and flotsam. And you know, I hadn't even thought about the windows yet! The desperate urge to clean them usually hits late spring, just as I realize it'll soon be too hot to do it LOL. Seriously - I don't go looking for things to clean. I just sort of get sucked into the process.
I'm a seasonal sort. And I
I'm a seasonal sort. And I do go on rampages (I don't think of these episodes as cleaning so much as attacking) about two or three times a year. There is usually a June rampage when school is out and I can finally tackle all that stuff I've been putting off until school is over. Then it gets hot and I go into lizard mode. Once it cools off again I do the pre-hibernation rampage before it gets too cold to do anything.
Lizards rock!
Jeannie, I love lizard mode! LOL on the great analogy, since it totally sums up that summer feeling. And YES, it is attacking. Its not a simple, lets tidy or clean, its this driving urge to banish clutter and mess.
I was wondering if it was a response to my deadline, but now I'm seeing it might be a normal thing LOL
I do a heavy duty cleaning
I do a heavy duty cleaning once a year for Passover, so it's sort of a "forced" spring cleaning, but at other times during the year I go through with the trash bags and get rid of stuff!
M
Yup me too
Gotta love those trash bags! About 5 or 6 times a year, we get postcards from a local charity to let us know they'll be in the neighborhood if we have donations, just put them on the sidewalk. It always spurs me on to shovel out the kids closets, bookcases, drawers, etc. so I have at least a bag to donate.
Spring Madness
Tawny, I'm more like you; I start one project and then it sort of takes on a life of its own, and before I know it, I have the entire house turned upside down and my entire family really irritated with me as I put them to work. This past weekend, it was kids' closets -- yikes!! My younger daughter (she's in the fifth grade) has grown nearly three inches since last August, and now towers over me at 5'8" (fifth grade!). Her solution for clothing that no longer fits her is to chuck it into the back of her closet. And since she's constantly outgrowing her clothing, her closet is full. So cleaning that out and bringing stuff to the Salvation Army also included looking at their books and toys and miscellaneous flotsam, to determine what we can yard sale or donate to the local thrift store. It's the never-ending project!
WOW
Talk about a growth spurt! My oldest is only 5'3, so I still tower over everyone but hubby LOL. And isn't it crazy how the cleaning process morphs from a simple "get rid of the winter coats that don't fit" to the only available space in the family room being a narrow path from one end to the other because EVERY SINGLE THING has to be reorganized?
Ack...
Upside, though? I'm definitely craving writing again LOL
Uh...
Can you come over and show me how it's done? I'm a horrible packrat and feel constant pressure to pare down the collection but typically don't know where to start, get overwhelmed, and then give up. Aack! ;)
Just close your eyes and dive in!
Fedora, its like this insane urge takes over. There is no explaining it LOL. But, as I tell my daughter when she's staring at the stuffed-animal and Littlest Pet Shop menagarie that is her room without a clue where to start the cleanup... just pick one thing and do it. Like put the animals in their bag. Once thats done, pick another or quit *G* The option to quit always seems to make it easier.
My husband is a total packrat too. Why on earth we need TWO extra big-block engines baffles me, but he is adamant that the minute he gives one away, he'll need it. Same with all the other car parts, paperwork, toys, etc he collects.
I have a theory that its because he lived in the same house from the time he was a year old until he left for the Army. Me, I moved almost 30 times, right up until we bought this house. So he hasn't had to pack, repack and repack again all his collections *g*.
Pack Rat
I'll admit to being a pack-rat. There are some things I just can't throw away, like home decorating magazines and food magazines. I also tend to hang onto mail-order catalogs for a long time, tho I'm getting better at chucking those immediately if I have no extra money with which to buy things. But the other night, my husband asked me if the nursing home where my grandmother lives might not like to have my "old" romance novels. I sort of looked at him and asked, "Which ones would those be?" He truly believed that I would part with any of my books! I know there are readers out there who have no problem getting rid of books they've already read, or won't read (or won't read again, LOL). But I want to keep them all! It's a problem.
Step away from the books!
I admit, I do donate books on a regular basis. What can I say, I read a lot *g* and not all make it to my keeper shelf. But the ones that do? NO WAY would they ever be donated. I love them, they are my friends!!! Well, that and I only have so much room in the house LOL.
I'm bad...
I gave away a ton while making room for my babies. After I had them I was like, what the HELL did I do??? WAAAAAAAAAAH! Thankfully, I read those books so much I can go over the entire book in my head. But still. Ow.
Noooooo
You gave away the books :-( Ouchies.
I've been known to go find a book I'd given away, because the characters do come back to nag and remind me of how much I loved their story! But at least you can just run the repeat reel in your head and see the whole thing again, huh? LOL
Hi, I'm Dee. And I'm a Cleanoholic.
Not that you can tell, because my family covers my problem--they're enablers. I clean almost violently on Saturdays most of the time. Some weeks I'm too lazy, but I generally make up for it when I can square away some time to attack. So I spring clean at least once every other month.
I'm psychotic that way. :)
Dee
Psychotic is right
Every other month? Holy cow, my family would lock me up!
Dee, do you find you're more fanatic about cleaning with the babies, or less? I was a lot more obsessed with clean when my kids were little... I think I've worn out over the years LOL.
I clean as I go. If I
I clean as I go. If I didn't, it would get to be too much for this old body to cope with.
I hear ya!
Like Sam mentioned, with pets, cleaning as we go is mandatory. If I don't vacuum every other day, the dog fur is in our faces. But the deep-down, clean and toss and reorganize and take everything out of the closet and only put 1/4 of it back cleaning? Its a sick compulsion and I can't stop myself this time of year. Any other time of year and I can ignore it, but in spring its like a sickness LOL
