Welcome Guest Blogger, Stephanie Julian!
Hi! It’s so nice to be here. Thanks for having me. I’m Stephanie Julian and I write erotic romance for Ellora’s Cave, and my current book is Seduced By Magic. My stories are based on an Etruscan mythology that is part history and part pure imagination on my part.
I didn’t originally set out to write stories with an Etruscan mythology. I had a story brewing in my head about witches and fairies and hunky protectors and mostly I wanted to write about magic. So I started researching the Sidhe, because all witches and fairies are British. Right?
Well, no. Almost every culture in the world has legends of magical races. Beings with wings and pointed ears, men with goat legs and Gods and Goddesses who control the world. I’m Italian on my dad’s side and German on my mom’s. There’s no trace of British blood to be found in my system and I wanted to write a story that played off my family origins. But Roman mythology was almost too pedestrian and way too regimented for me. I wanted something new and different, something I could play with and adapt to my needs.
One day, reading a book about Italian magic, I came across a reference to the ancient Etruscans. Most of their writings had been destroyed though we do know they had a full pantheon that predated the Romans. They performed magical rituals and made predictions based on the flights of birds. They had underworld demons and goddesses who wore pointed red shoes. And their women held as much power as men.
Now this I could work with. I started collecting research books, designed mainly for college courses about the Etruscans. Books that might seem like dry reading, but that offered me a wealth of information I could incorporate into this secret, magical Etruscan society I was building. A society that survived into modern times and lives among us now.
I picked up tidbits such as those red shoes worn by Goddesses and evidence of blood sacrifices and the practice of hammering nails into a temple wall to sever the ties of the past year. All these things wormed their way into my brain and became part of my fictional world.
I wove in Italian folklore then drew on my own childhood growing up with a huge Italian family in modern America. And the Magical Seduction series was born. Stories filled with folletti, linchetti and salbinelli (fairies, elves and satyrs), magic and hot, steamy sex.
I’ve been building this world for a few years now and I’m hopeful that you’ll get to read about the streghe, grigori and lucani, as well. I’ve had so much fun playing with the details that I don’t know that I’ll ever want to go back to the real world. There’s just not enough magic.

Welcome Stephanie!
Great post, and I love your cover. Great to have you here today. :)
You're right, and your post reminded me of Joseph Campbell who also talks about the commons myths and stories across all cultures. Some better known than others, but I really like your original take. I know when I think about Italian magic I think of the "evil eye" that's always kind of attributed to older Italian women (never men, interestingly) and origins of the tarot. ;)
Neat topic. :)
Sam
Thanks!
Thanks so much for having me, Sam. It's nice to be here.
I really enjoy working with mythology and folklore. There's just so much to play with.
Wow!
Hi, Stephanie! I don't know much about Etruscan mythology at all! I wonder why the pointed red shoes!? :) (Hmm... hints of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz?) Congrats on your latest book! Have all your books been based in this same world? Or do you have other worlds you're working on, too?
Hi fedora
So far all of my books are based in this world. There's just so much material to work with.
I didn't even think about Dorothy's red shoes!! Ooh, now I have to use that.
I love your idea, Stephanie
And the way it unfolded for you--as if it was meant to be. I love magical stories, and you've just given me a new author to read! ;-)
Have you ever been to Italy for on-the-spot research?
Anna
Thanks Anna
Hope you enjoy the stories.
And yes, I have been to Italy, though not for many years. I'm dying to go back. And what a tax write-off that would be. Now if I could just convince my hubby...
Magic
Magic is where you find it, be it here in the 21st century or in the world of Etruscan foletti, but I like that you've really found something you enjoy enough to want to do it for as long as you can write. That comes out in the way you write, Steph. Like the saying goes, write what you love. You seem to have done that! Congrats! Great blog post, too!
Hey Carla
Thanks so much for your kind words. And I do so love to write about magic.
Red shoes
Welcome, Stephanie!!
The last time I wore red shoes (and come to think of it, they were pointy toed), all I ended up with were pinched feet.
I guess my screen name to the contrary, there is nothing magical about me!
I'll just have to keep relying on good books to foster my fantasies!
ani
Hey Ani
You've got the right idea, we're all goddesses, we just have to pick the right shoes!!
I'm intrigued...
I know nothing about mythology and I am in absolute awe about the amount of work/research authors who write about it usually do. Your story sounds great, Stephanie, and your cover is beautiful! Congrats on your release! :P
Thanks Sassa
I have to admit, I'm a geek about research. I love to read big thick books written by people who know way too much about what they're writing about.
