Puppy Thoughts (and last post winner)

I'm probably crazy.

We already have two dogs and a cat, but I want to add to the zoo. We have a Golden Retriever (who is really old, poor thing, her hips are shot), and a hyper German short-haired pointer mix, who carries around his stuffed animals like a two-year old (he sleeps with this stuffed duck; takes that thing everywhere; it's his security blanket.

Two days ago, he buried it in the snow, silly dog, but when he finds it in a day or two, I'll take a picture of him with it). And we have a cat who has a thing for scrunchies. She carries mine around in her mouth like a dog.

I know. Weird animals. They provide hours of amusement, except for the Pointer, who barks just when I'm in the middle of writing and drives me nuts.

Anyway, I want to get a dog for me, a little dog (DH has the big dogs). I researched all the toy breeds and the best, according to the AKC and other websites that do those recommendations, for a family with kids, dogs and a cat, is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (DH is no fan of Taco Bell dogs or poodles, but he loves spaniels). The kids saw the pic of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and LOVED THEM. And I did too :-)

My question to my readers -- do any of you own one? Does he/she get along well with the rest of the family? How about a CKCS mix? I'm hoping to find a rescue dog, so I can adopt a homeless pet (the Pointer is a shelter dog, and we've had two shelter animals before, so I'm a big fan of adopting from shelters when I can), but that means I probably won't find a purebred. No biggie, but just wondering how a mix worked out for you, if you have one.

Bentley4a_0.jpgI'm probably crazy for adding to this insane mix :-). But with a face like that one, how can I resist?

***UPDATE: DH and I were out today and we went to the same place where we had gotten our cat (a veterinarian) and they had a CKCS, but it was a male (and where we had a male dog already, that wouldn't work so well). Then we saw a female Havanese...which is a type of Bichon. And though DH had walked in there saying we don't need or want another dog, the minute the puppy licked his hand, his heart was sold (or maybe it was just seeing my heart so set on this ;-).

SophieMandy.jpgSo...meet Sophie (with my daughter)!

Hi, Shirley!
Have you tried Petfinder.com? That's how I found my yellow lab mix, Daisy. You can put in specific info(like breed, sex, and age). Also some of the purebreds have their own rescues.

LindaC

That is a great site!

I did try it...and saw great dogs there! It's an awesome site.

I have a friend with a CKCS. They are very nice, loving dogs.

Thanks, Estella!

I hope the Havanese I ended up getting today is the same :-)

I currently have 6 cats (one

I currently have 6 cats (one just passed) and my kitten loves the scrunchies too. In fact I bought her an entire package of her own because she always steals my daughter's (still does lol). We've had two dogs. The first was a beagle and the second was part spaniel and I'm not sure (medium sized). She had the best personality. In 17 years she put up with two babies - one who learned how to stand by pulling up with handfuls of the dogs hair - and 7 cats and never once did she ever show any anger. So I would go with a mix. Our beagle (full pedigree) was nice but more high strung. Lots of luck.

Oh, I LOVE cats...

LOL about your cats. The Havanese we got today is really friendly with the cat, though the cat disagrees so far ;-). Maybe more scrunchies will win her over!

I agree, Fedora!

Check out the new pic, too (though Sophie wouldn't stay still long enough to get a good one! When I can get her to sit still, I'll post more on my blog).

congrats on the new pup!

I think it's great you are making room in your home for a new pet -- you know I am an animal nut, we have two cats and two dogs, and they're all great. I've thought about another dog, but I know my younger dog wouldn't have it -- she's very territorial now, and while she adapted to the new cats, loves them (mostly) she wouldn't allow another dog. We've even had to tell MIL not to bring her dog for visits anymore, because it just won't work now.

We have a purebred Lab, and while we love her to bits, she is far more tempermental and far more sensitive, etc than our rescue pit/dalmation mix (looks like a mini Holstein! LOL). I would go for mixes from now on for sure -- our mix is way more "sturdy" than our Lab, who has allergies, gets sick to her stomach easily, etc. Thankfully, when we got her, we paid extra for hip and eye certification, so we're not worrying about that. But our little rescue mutt is really so much more... I don't know how to describe it. Just sort of easier in a million ways. Love them both, but would from now on do mixes, and pit-mixes in particular. Love 'em.

Enjoy your new cutie!
