Finding the Fun in Fitness
Let me preface this by saying that I HATE exercise. I mean really, really hate it. I was always the last kid picked in gym because I have all the coordination of a marionette with its strings cut. I never played sports in high school, and my kids fight over who WON'T have Mom on their team for playing basketball, because I'm that bad, LOL. But at a certain age, I had to face the fact that without exercise, there was just no way to slow down the aging clock (or reverse the scale's depressing numbers)
The revelatory moment came at the end of April when a friend posted a picture of me from a writer's conference when I did a guest blog for him.
Actually, several pics--taken over the past few years. Right there, in full color on the web, was the evidence of what too many boxes of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and too many years of sitting on the sofa (working! honest!) will do to a person. Basically, I saw the picture and screamed, "holy crap, is that my a**?"

I had been "trying" to diet for a couple years. Uh, yeah, I could see how well THAT was working out. Instead of losing, I'd gained twenty pounds. Um, I guess maybe mac-and-cheese isn't a diet food?
Around this time, DH and I bought an elliptical machine. I didn't expect to use it when we got it (even though I had SAID I would) because I'm the same woman who SOLD my treadmill to buy a RECLINER. Yep, I did.
And I wondered why I was in this cellulite-weighed down boat?
I didn't start on the elliptical right away. Instead, being a wimp, I started easy--just eating better and working out to a 20-minute Pilates Ab workout that was on the On Demand channel on cable. Did that for a couple weeks, faithfully, twice a day, because, well, it was kinda easy (not REALLY easy, but kinda) and it didn't make me work too hard ;-). Then I started noticing a change. I took some measurements.
I had reduced my waist by four inches. I was stunned. I figured if I could do all that with just Pilates, well, heck, what could I do if I used the other equipment? Five days a week, pretty faithfully (even on vacation), I've been on the elliptical and done ab work, and some free weights. I added kickboxing a week or so ago after my son got one of those dummies for practicing his karate on (talk about a stress reliever!). I also walk several times a week with my friend Marci, doing a 3.3 mile track, rain or shine.
I've got muscles I didn't even realize I had now, and though I am FAR from a six-pack, my teenage daughter laughingly pointed out my "two-pack" a few weeks ago. Hey, I'll take two. I'll take anything other than a beer belly, LOL.
In 4 1/2 months, I've dropped 30 pounds, gone down from a size 14 to an 8, almost a 6, and have become...dare I say it? A fitness fan. I get irritated if I can't work out. I would NOT say I'm a workout addict (far from it!) but I can say that I hiked 2.6 miles in Muir Woods without breaking a sweat, climbed Nob Hill with no problem, and look forward to shopping in a way I haven't since I was 20 and don't mind wearing a bathing suit (too much ;-). Those kinds of things keep me on track, and keep me going down to the basement and climbing on that machine.
So, if I'm ever tempted to sell my elliptical to buy some more butt-expanding furniture, slap me upside the head and show me those before pics ;-). I've got to go down and log my thirty minutes for the day!
Tell me...do you like or hate exercise? What's your favorite kind? Aerobics? Walking? Channel surfing? :-)
Shirley

Morning Shirley!
Congratulations! You are doing amazing! But I thought you were just gorgeous at RWA, so just keep doing whatever it is you're doing. :)
I love exercise, actually, even though I don't think I will ever see a size eight (but who knows??? LOL) though I do have an elliptical, but I prefer activity kinds of exercise, like working in the garden, or walking/hiking, kayaking, etc. I get bored with exercise machines, etc though I do do sets of situps every other day, and some weights, and I will do a daily or every-other day Wii workout just to keep moving, especially during heavy writing weeks, where I don't get as much of the other activities. I am pretty strong and have good endurance, though I do need to lose a bit more weight. I might have a 2 or 6 pack somewhere underneath, you just can't see it, LOL!
I think slow and steady is the way to go weightloss wise. I have lost 21lbs in 2 years just cutting down on things, but I think I might have to step it up either in exercise or in diet to lose another 10 or 20, which is my goal... I would love to lose another 25 lbs, or so, and then be done. I would probably be around a size 12-14 at that point, which would be fine with me. And eight would be nice, but I don't think I'll ever be that ambitious. *G*
Sam
Agree on slow and steady...
When I was like 19, I'd eat like nothing all day and lose weight fast. Uh, not the smartest thing to do because the weight comes back just as fast, LOL.
Congrats on the 21 pounds!! That is so awesome, Sam! I love it on those shows when people lose that kind of weight and the trainer shows them what 21 pounds of sugar or whatever looks like. It's always pretty stunning to see it all together like that.

Hate it, hate it , hate it
I hate excercise !!! It's something I wish I'd never have to do but unfortunatly I wasn't gifted with one of those super efficient metabolism. DH just baught a 2 seats bycicle so me can ride it 3 times a week. It's a good start. Maybe I'll try those torture appliances one day, who knows ?? ;-)
Biking...
My DH loves bike riding. We each have our own bikes, but I'm not really as enthusiastic about it as he is, LOL. He wants to get one of those tandem bikes, but I don't know how much I'd really want to get out there and ride. So now my bike is on a stand in the basement, beside the elliptical, should I want to vary the workout :-)

Congrats!
I wish I could turn my own complete disbelief at what I now look like in pictures into a better dietary/workout routine. I did that once before, lost a bunch of weight and happily fit into clothing sizes I hadn't seen in ages. Then gradually the darn weight came back and so i started a solid exercise regiment. That worked until I injured myself and now I'm struggling with finding the balance between exercise/diet vs pain/sweet-tooth. So far I'm losing the battle.
I loved taking step class but can no longer do that, so am trying to walk nearly every day and lift some weights when I can.
Today I made some of my favorite muffins for my college-age daughter and didn't touch a one. That was a bit of a victory for me.
When I was walking this morning I noticed a neighbor who has struggled with weight for years is now down again and her success, along with ones like yours that I read about, will hopefully give me the inspiration to keep making steps in the right direction.
Congrats on your new addiction!
Good for you!
Hey, you gotta start somewhere and those muffins might be that first start! :-) I hear you though -- I have a terrible sweet tooth. I finally got those 100-calorie snack packs and have one of those for dessert. Not the real thing, but better than nothing ;-)

Walking
Walking is my favorite form of exercise. I also like yoga and light aerobics, nothing too fast paced.
I like walking too...
Especially with a friend. It's definitely more fun when I can talk and laugh my way through the miles, LOL.

Congratulations!!!
Shirley, I am awed and inspired by your story!! You look absolutely fabulous, and I wouldn't have guessed that you needed to lose anything.
As my husband says, there is definitely more of me to love now than there was when we were first married. I've gone from a size 6 to a size 14, and although I've recently lost fifteen pounds (cutting back to a 1200 calorie per day diet), I have another 35 to go. But I hate to exercise. I mean, I really, really, REALLY hate to exercise. I borrowed my mom's treadmill one winter when she was in Florida, intending to use it every night, but in the end it just collected dust. DH and I went for a 2-mile walk with the dog the other day, but I was just about in traction later that night. We did buy two kayaks about a month ago, and I have to say I am enjoying kayaking on the river, but not sure it counts as exercise. It's too easy and too much fun.
I have no idea what an elliptical machine is. It sounds scary.
I think I would enjoy doing something, especially since I was a fairly good athlete in high school, and an excellent runner. It just seems that between working full time, writing, and family, there are so many other things I'd rather do. I'm not going to lie and say I don't have time, because I could make the time. So I guess the best thing to do is just start out small...short walks, etc. I may have to try the Pilates routine, too.
Thanks for making me see that it can be done! And with wonderful results! You look terrific!
Elliptical Machines
Hi Karen,
I hated my treadmill too (which is why I sold it at a garage sale and got that recliner, LOL). And like you I TRULY hate to exercise. But I do like my elliptical machine a lot. It's easy on the knees, has lots of different settings, lets me connect my iPod and has a big enough shelf to fit a hardcover book (I know exactly how many pages I can read in 30 minutes, LOL).
This one is what I have: http://www.fitness-equipment-source.com/elliptical-reviews/nordictrack-990-review.htm
but there's lots of other great ones.
Cool on the kayaking!! I'm sure that's exercise. It's not sitting on the sofa, so it has to be! And big congrats on the 15 pounds! We'll all be svelte, sexy authors at the next RWA conference ;-)

elliptical
The YMCA where I work out has a row of these things and the first few times I tried it was impossible for me to get into the rhythm. Eventually though, I was able to do the exercise and I can definitely say it is easier on the joints. But I switch back and forth between it and the treadmill.
Walked another mile this evening with the DH! And did not cave on the muffins!
Excellent blog,Shirley and
Excellent blog,Shirley and you've motivated me. I was an athlete and depended on the ahtletic metabolism for years. Then one day I realized that I hadn't done anything athletic for a while. And it showed. So I took up running with my husband. It took years to learn to like it. But I loved the results. Last year was the first year I went running alone while my husband was on his summer job and then I knew I really was a runner. I do yoga and pilates, too.
You look great, by the way.
