Feeling Small in a Big World

ShirleyJump's picture

We’re doing the tourist thing in CA this week and one of our stops was Muir Woods National Monument—the largest national park with California Redwoods. These trees are hard to comprehend until you get up close. Their sheer size and beauty is just incredible, and makes you really think about your size and place in the world.

We had been to Muir Woods a few years ago—but back then it was just DH and I, on a quick side trip to San Francisco. I got sick and battled the cold from hell while we hiked the trails circling the mountain. I remember very, very little of that trip besides the number of Kleenexes I used ;-).

MuirWoods1.jpgThis time, we took the kids. We opted to take our same trail—a 2.6 mile hike up the mountain, over the rather treacherous tree roots, along some kind of scary skinny paths that skirt a precipitous drop. The scenery was beautiful—deep, dark woods, thick, majestic trees. We had arrived at the park early in the morning, so there weren’t too many people there when we started hiking (when we left, people were parked up and down a good half mile along the road).

MuirWoods2.jpgThe hike was a good one. Not too difficult, but not too easy either. My youngest had the most trouble, but we all made it through in far less time than the two hours advised in the brochure. Thorughout it all, we stopped and took pictures of the Redwoods. Every time, I was reminded of how small we all are (as humans) and how these trees, which have been here for centuries, taking root in shallow soil, have made a lasting, impressive impact.

MuirWoods3.jpgI didn’t want to leave the park. It was so tranquil, so pretty. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the world we live in and for the deft touch of Mother Nature.

Tell me—what “tourist” destination has most impressed you or left you with amazing memories or visuals?

Goin' Places

Shirley, my family loved the Muir Woods. So impressive, and yes, we felt small--and young! lol That's a place I'd love to return to. We went just before close, so there weren't many people, but we also couldn't stay long. We're also big fans of Mackinac Island, MI. The peaceful retreat is right up our alley. Not to mention the fudge.

Love Mackinac Island!

We've been there, too, and loved it. So quiet and different, without cars. We had a blast riding horses around the island!

Still need to visit those...

The redwoods look amazing--we haven't gotten around to taking a trip to see them yet!

I think seeing some of the ancient sights in China, including the Great Wall, have left me with the most sense of wonder--it's a combination of the natural beauty of some of the sights, plus how old some of those places are that give me pause.

Would love to go...

To China! We haven't been to the other side of the world yet but it's definitely on my list of places to go!

Lucky duck!!

I would love to see the redwoods and the sequoias one of these days -- really amazing to even think about it.

I almost bought a card for my sister's b'day that went on and on about the centuries old redwoods and how magestically they grow over hundreds of years, and then you open it, and it says "thanks for planting them." LOL

I got her a different one. ;)

But as to sights that really wow me, I have to admit I think the expanses of the National Seashore around Cape Cod and the Eastern Shore are amazing -- they always get to me. Then, the canyons of the Anza-Borrego, where we went hiking in Southern Cal -- again, really just moving and breathtaking.

Have a great time, Shirley!

Sam

I agree...

Totally love the Cape and the tranquility of places like Truro. I so miss that area :-( Every part of the world has something cool to offer IMO :-)

Amazing

I would swear I left a comment here but if I did it disappeared. I think two of the most amazing visuals are located in Yellowstone National Park...Old Faithful and The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone which is basically a waterfall that is huge and has carved out a "canyon".

would love to see...

Either of those! They're on our list but we haven't made it there...yet ;-)

Shirley, your trip sounds

Shirley, your trip sounds amazing. I haven't spent much time on the west coast, but would love to see Muir Woods. When my husband I were first married, we lived overseas and did a lot of glacier skiing in Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. I remember one afternoon, standing on top of this mountain, literally above the clouds, looking across to a distant mountain peak (the Eiger, I think) and being blown away by the sheer majesty and beauty of it all. Then, as I watched, there was this tremendous rumbling of noise, like thunder, and it seemed that half of that distant mountainside just tumbled down...it was a massive avalanche and thank goodness we were on a completely different peak, but it was awe-inspiring.

how amazing!

Sounds like an incredible sight...but so glad you were on the other peak, LOL!
