Risking Rejection and Romantic Commitment

We’ve always enjoyed reading about the guys who give their all for friends, family, and fellow man. But what about when those heroic men demonstrate a history of leaving the scene when a possible romance invades their space?

Jack Dodson, the hero of my latest erotic-fiction story, Roughrider, is a man who lives as hard as he loves. After a stint on the rodeo circuit, he welcomes a change of pace. Romantic commitment is his challenge. As he’s preparing to settle his wild ways and get down to ranch-managing business, a childhood friend returns to his Texas hometown bent on stirring up some thrills and slaying some of her sexual demons.

Kimberly Taylor knows Jack’s love and attention will be harder won than any rodeo trophy, but she cannot dismiss her attraction to him. A decade has passed since their last face-to-face contact, and she’s eager to find out if it’s possible to turn their platonic relationship into a passionate one. While the object of her desire has shrugged off his past affairs, Kim’s still wondering whether or not she’ll be able to trust a man again after being wronged by her last lover. Despite Jack’s history of footloose behavior, Kim is willing to give her friend the benefit of the doubt and put her herself directly in the path of her ultimate temptation.

What about you? Would you risk rejection and emotional upset to pursue the above bachelor type to whom you’ve never admitted your attraction? Or would you play it safe, remain silent and harbor those lustful and loving feelings forever? Have you found yourself drawn to those dangerous men who fly in the face of romantic convention but manage to charm their way into your heart, bed, brain and body anyway?

Blessings and all the best,

Shawna Moore

I've never been a danger girl...

In the sense that I don't go for the bad boy type -- to me they're just too much trouble. I like the more clean cut types, but that's in real life -- in fiction, it's fun reading about the dangerous guys, and watching them fall. ;)

Your book blurb sounds great!

Danger Girls

Hi, Sam!

Thanks for your kind words. I had a great deal of fun writing my first rodeo hero I've always fallen for the bad boys LOL And I love writing them. But in other aspects of my real life, I play it safe :)

I would have to give it a

I would have to give it a shot. You never know what would happen if you don't try. Your book sounds great.

Trying

Hi, Stacy!

I agree, I'd definitely try and see what happens. I'm one who wouldn't rest until I knew for certain whether a romance or not were possible. The wondering "what if" would become intolerable.

Thanks for your compliments. If you happen to read Roughrider, please let me know your thoughts :) Have a great day and thanks for stopping by to comment :)

Bwaak, bwaak...

Count me in the chicken camp--I don't know whether I'd have the courage to speak up. I love reading stories about this very situation (and yours sounds great!) but in reality, I'm not sure whether I'd be willing to open my mouth. And again, love to read about the dangerous type, but in reality, I tend towards stable and maybe a touch boring ;)

Not really chicken

Hi, Fedora!

There were times when I wish I would have decided upon stable and boring LOL But we learn from those experiences. And they make good fodder for writing our fictional stories. Sometimes silence is best, and I agree that knowing these guys are footloose by nature can make us all hesitant at times :)

Thanks for your kind words. Glad you could stop by today!

danger is not my middle name

In fiction bad boys are great, but in real life... No. In real life I've always been drawn to the brainy guys.

Middle Names and Choices in Men

Hi, Minna!

There's much to be said for intelligence in men. Brawn only goes so far, doesn't it? At the end of the day, it's better knowing you have someone who can literally lift you up spirit and mood-wise when you're down as opposed to having someone who can bench press umpteen pounds and lift you over their head but doesn't care one whit about your troubles.

Many thanks for stopping by to chat today!

Yummy cover!!

That fine speciman (pun intended) on the cover looks good enough to eat!

Well, I had my time with the bad boys when I was younger, and now am extremely happy with my brainy guy. Generally, I'm too chicken to risk rejection on the scale you're talking about. I'm better at being pursued than doing the pursuing!

Pursued

Hi, Cathy!

Nice having you here to chat today :) Thanks for stopping by!

Looking back, I wish I'd let myself be pursued more during those dating-the-bad-boy days. The longer I live, and the more I learn about the dynamics and rarity of true romance, the more I know I would have done things differently at times when younger. All part of the maturation process...

Thanks for the compliments on my cover model. You all should have heard me when I first opened the cover art file Very excited to say the least, and I was pleased he fit the physical description of the story's hero, Jack, to a tee :) Have a great day!

Hey Shawna, What a cover!

Hey Shawna,

What a cover! Yum. Yum. I've always been attracted to guys who can make me laugh. While I love to read bad boys, I need a stable kind of guy. Now, if he could be just a little wicked, well...

Slightly Wicked

Hey Helen!

Glad you could stop by today! :) Thanks for the cover compliments. Roughrider will likely always reign as the favorite of my covers Glad you enjoyed him, too :)

When it comes to guys and a bit of wickedness, I agree. As long as they have other defining and grounding traits that keep them in the romance, a little naughty never hurts ;)

Twice Burnt...

GREAT cover, Shawna!! Now where was I? Oh yeah:

The first two men I was seriously involved with were bad boys. That's partly what drew me to them.

After being burnt twice, however, I gave up and went for a slow and steady type. We've been together for 21 years now (gasp! How the heck did that happen!) so I think it was the right choice.

All the best,

ani

Burned by the Bad Boys

Hi, Ani!

Those bad boys are white hot...in more ways than one, so we find out. Holding on to them requires special fire-proof gloves and then some in many cases. As has always been said, slow and steady wins the race, and your marriage has proven this. CONGRATULATIONS on those 21 years of marriage :) Many thanks for stopping by and weighing in on today's topic :)
Have a great day!

A Matter of Degree

I think it's a question of how bad that bad boy is. I'm not nearly masochistic enough to be interested in guys who are total train wrecks. But the straight-and-narrow type leave me pretty cold too.

Guess I'm just fussy. I want a good guy with the heart of a bad boy...or is it the other way around?

Good Hearts and Bad Guys

Hey PG!

Great seeing you here! Many thanks for stopping by :)

I agree my ideal is a bad boy-type with a good heart. He has to be concerned about more things than his own wants and desires. If he demonstrates caring and compassion for others, I'd find him attractive and possible marriage material :) Have a great rest of the day!

I am just too shy

so I am definitely not a danger girl. I remember an encounter with one of the really hot cover models at this years RT convention it rendered me absolutely speechless. There are only two with whom I can talk without out getting my tongue-tied. LOL

Doging Danger

Hi, Danny!

Nothing wrong with playing it safe and sensible. Sometimes those bad boys can turn a woman's world upside down

I'd hoped to make it to RT in Pittsburgh in 2008, but that's not going to happen, unfortunately. But I'll be there in spirit :) Glad you had a chance to attend this year's RT convention. I heard from lots of authors who had a blast. Here's to future RTs and cover models!! :)

Thanks, so much, for stopping by and giving your input on the topic. Hope you have a wonderful evening :)

If the man was who I wanted I would go for it!

Braving it for the Bad Boys

Hi, Estella!

Thanks for posting today :) Like you, if the guy seemed to be someone I wanted to get to know better and be around, I forged ahead. Those real-life bad boys have served as reference points for my fictional bad boys.

Have a fabulous evening!

Smiles across the miles,

Shawna

Shawna, I think we all

Shawna,

I think we all attracted to the bad boy. I personally love the bad boy hero, but I think down deep my bad boys are not really all bad. Enjoyed the post and your book sound wonderful.

What is it about Bad Boys

Hi, Christie!

Thanks for stopping by today :) Glad you enjoyed my topic and post, and I really appreciate your kind words about Roughrider. This was a story that proved fun to write from beginning to end.

I agree about the prevalent attraction to bad boys. But you're right. When we write those guys, we make sure to give them redeeming qualities that will make them excellent candidates for romance. Sometimes we dig deeper to uncover those positives than others, but we make sure our heroines have the good men they deserve :) Have a great evening!

Smiles across the miles,

Shawna

Yum

Hmm. the cover is hot.
I like the bad boy types in a book

Bad Boy Model

MY HEART

Whoever shot that cover, knew I was gonna have to have it. lol I have massive cowboy love and that cover is hot. I can't wait to read that. I just need a whole shelf of hot cowboy books;) I'm always drawn to them first.

Hot Cover

Hi, Jibby!

Thanks for the compliments on my Roughrider cover and for your interest in the story :) I agree, he's hot and irresistible. Hope you enjoy the story, and please let me know your thoughts. Have a terrific day! Glad you stopped by :)

Smiles across the miles,

Yep, still hot!

I had to check the cover again to make sure yesterday wasn't a fluke. Yep, he's still yummy! LOL!

Doing a doubletake

Hi, Cathy!
