Greetings from Down Under and a give away!
Hello. I hope you're all well - it's great to be popping in for a visit at Cigars to say hi to all you lovelies! I'm celebrating the release of my 10th book with Harlequin next month (not counting my novella "Back to You", part of the Hot City Nights anthology). Woo hoo. Amorous Liaisons is a Blaze, and it's set in Paris - what's not to like about that?
It's been a very...interesting year so far for me. Lots of unrest and disorder moving countries and getting all settled. And some lovely surprises - being a finalist in the Romantic Book of the Year Awards over in Melbourne was probably the best of those, and selling to Super Romance was pretty high up there, too. I didn't win the Award - that honor went to Anne Oliver, a talented Australian writer - but my first Super will be out in March. Another woo hoo! I have also lost nearly 13 kg in total on my new health kick, and am about to launch a new website. This last is a sad necessity due to my previous site going tits-up, as we say down here south of the Equator. Frustrating, but my new site is shaping up a treat. But it's not up yet - don't get too clicky with your mouse button for a week or two!
Now, back to Amorous Liaisons... This is my Disaster Book. I lost the almost-complete manuscript in the bowels of my computer and it never saw the light of day again. Thankfully, I had the first three chapters in a separate file, and after a week of pulling my hair out and weeping, I sat down and rewrote the book. Fun? I don't think so. But it taught me a valuable lesson - ALWAYS BACK UP. Do you hear me, fellow writers? ALWAYS BACK UP. ALWAYS.
To celebrate my 10th book for Harlequin (not counting my novella yada yada), I would like to give away three copies of Amorous Liaisons to three members here at cigars. Also, as an extra bonus, I will give each winner another book of their choice from my backlist - to be decided in discussions afterward. So...all you have to do to qualify is drop in for a chat - oh, and tell us all about something that you've really enjoyed lately. A movie, a meal, a conversation, a book, a person. At this end of the world, spring has sprung and I am feeling good...

I have enjoyed
Congratulations on your 10th book with Harlequin. :)
Recently, I have enjoyed sitting in my lounge chair on the deck to read.
chair + deck +book = paradise
I am currently bidding online for a set of wicker chairs for our deck. I plan to enjoy the spring and summer out there with a cold beer and a hot book. But first I have to win that auction... I wish you many more happy hours on your deck!
YAY!
Have chairs for deck. Just need to dial up some sunshine and hang out by the letterbox waiting for my Amazon order to arrive...
I'm enjoying the cooler weather
It's been an absolute treat for me. I'm not a fan of the hot, hot summer. I really appreciate a sunny but cool and crisp kind of day.
Congrats on your 10th Harlequin. Looking forward to reading it. Thanks for sharing your day with us.
Cooler weather? Bring on the sun!
I should qualify the above statement. I am from Australia, which you all probably know by now, and my natural habitat is glaring, baking heat. (okay, winters can be quite cold and overcast, but still, I'm essentially thin-blooded). Over here in New Zealand where I am currently living, it's been a long, rainy, grey winter. I need sun! With the blossom trees just starting to flower and the weather warming up, I have high hopes! Thanks for sharing, too!
Hi Sarah!
It's always a treat when you stop by for a visit! All kinds of good news! Congratulations on reaching that milestone of ten books! Great job. I love your new cover! I have to ask, because I can't remember...did you work on this manuscript when you were in Paris last September? I do recall when you lost the story and had to rewrite it.
I'm flying from Boston to California on October 1st, and now I know what I'll be reading on the flight; phew! One less thing I need to worry about, LOL!
Congratulations on selling to Supers! Can't wait to read that one, too.
Hey there!
It's lovely to be back, if even only for a brief visit. I really enjoy having a chat with everyone (can you tell?) I did do some work on this book over in Paris and Florence last year. It actually started life as a completely different story, but the conceit was so sit-com silly when I actually sat down to write it I had to rethink the whole idea. So, it has been quite a recalcitrant little devil, really, when I think about it!
I really enjoyed writing my Super. Not that I don't love the heat of Blaze, but there's something really warming about having the luxury of including family and other life elements into the story without having to worry too much about getting the heat quotient in there. I cried quite a few times while I was writing. I hope that's a good sign!
Have a great trip!
I've enjoyed discovering
I've enjoyed discovering Love is an Exploding Cigar. A little late in the times sorry. Eeek if I keep discovering these author sites it'll take away from my reading and it will take longer to get to those 10 books (and the novella. LOL)
New friends
Yeah, Cigars is a great site (I can say this with not even a hint of egotism now that I am no longer one of the contributing authors!). Everyone here is always friendly and chatty and they have some great debates, laughs and discussions. It's like catching up with friends for coffee and cake for me. Often I drop by just for a read, even if I don't contribute. Hope you keep on enjoying.
Congrats on your 10th book.
Congrats on your 10th book. It is really nice for you to join us today.
I have enjoyed setting on my deck, watching the hummingbirds fighting over our feeders.
The deck again!
I'm developing a serious case of deck envy. We have a lovely deck out the back of our house, looking out over lots of trees. Even though we are just five minutes walk from a major cafe district, we're also close to a park so our quite-high deck gives me a great view of lots of waving tree-tops. Makes me feel like I'm in a tree house! Now I just need some seating and less of these pesky spring showers... But it's all good, we're getting there. Thanks for your congrats - lovely to chat!
Congratulations Sarah
on your new book. Lately I have been enjoying tea. There are so many different kinds out there and it's relaxing to sit down with a cup of tea and a great book.
Ah, tea...
We have a great shop in Australia called T2 and they sell nothing but tea, in all its variations. All the regional and traditional types, plus funky new ones like chocolate tea and creme brulee and fruit tisanes etc. They have over 180 different types of tea, and I love going into their shops because they're very exotic and pretty. I think they even sell on-line - just google T2 and their site should pop up. Delish! I have a couple of books on the way from Amazon that I am gagging to read, so I might just join you in a cuppa - out on my deck in the sun if all goes according to plan. See a common theme emerging, anyone?
Welcome back, Sarah!!
It's always lovely to see you again!
Just yesterday I went to lunch for the first time with a woman from my exercise group. She's someone I chat with whenever we're working out together but it was the first time we've gotten together outside the gym.
We had a blast! And we've decided to make it a monthly thing.
She's just a wee bit older than I, her mother is from England originally (as am I) and she's a librarian so we have reading in common.
Since I work 20 miles away from where I live, I don't have many friends where I work (my gym is where my job is as I work out before work). This is a HUGE thing for me! Finally, after 6 years here, someone to get together with on a somewhat regular basis.
I'm thrilled!
ani
I know how you feel...
...meeting and making new friends is hard. I actually find the gym a difficult place to meet folk - when I am there, I am totally in the zone, on that treadmill, running to my Britney Spears and Timbaland tracks (!!!) and trying to visualise my thighs slimmer. Not a lot of room for socialising in any of that. Plus most of the other members at my gym are big, hulking men. Wait a minute... I sense a concept for a Blaze novel coming on.... I'm so pleased you've connected with someone. Hope you have lots of fun getting to know each other even better. Cheers!
You mean, besides "Below the
You mean, besides "Below the Belt"? ;)
Things have been busy, sucky, and stressful around here lately (cue violins), with health issues, salary issues, more health issues, and a boatload of ragweed allergies, because really, what's fall without snot? Despite all the "woe is me" BS, I've enjoyed two things lately. The first is the fabulous weather we had on our vacation to Nova Scotia. Sunny for a week straight with highs around 80. That's unheard of for the Maritimes.
The second thing was the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. I walked it every day at National, sometimes twice, hiking uphill through Union Square just for twenty minutes of silent walking. Once I met a friend to walk, another time I took another conference attendee with me (nice first-friend-date, eh? If she hadn't had a PhD in medieval history, I wouldn't have offered), but mostly I went alone, and I loved the solitude and centering. Six weeks later...that's still my most enjoyable recent thing.
wow
The labyrinth at the cathedral sounds amazing. I must admit, I am a little regretting I didn't get to National this year. It's probably the closest it's ever going to be to where I live (ie just the 13 hours flight time from NZ to SF) but it was simply too hard to get my backside into gear with all the other things I had on my plate this year. So, I sympathise with your violin concerto - I've been holding my own down here for the past few months! But, as with all things, this too shall pass. It's my new life motto. So...hang in there. Am sure even the snot shall pass at some stage!
Congrats!
You know, it just hit me that No Reservations was my tenth as well, in July, but I think I blanked on it because it was an anthology. LOL I think technically that counts, according to Harlequin, or if not, then my Texas Ranger next June would be my 10th full book of my own...
I always back up. I am the backing up queen, LOL. I back up new writing to gmail files every time I close the document, even if it's just for a few hours and I'm coming back later. I backup my entire computer once a day through autobackup that Mike set up. I learned this back in school, when I would tell my students that losing a a paper because they didn't back-up wasn't an acceptable excuse, so I made sure I held myself to the same standard. ;) It's a habit now.
I can't wait to read the new books coming out -- Amorous Liasons looks great! :)
I've enjoyed many things lately -- the state fair, working in my garden, exercise, yummy foods... life is good, even if summer is almost over... wah.
Happy to have you here, as always
Sam
I enjoyed a summer vacation
I enjoyed a summer vacation in San Francisco. It was such a treat. I love that city and look forward to going again sometime!
Congrats on book ten!
I am enjoying tomatoes from my garden
Despite getting the plants in late and getting a ground covering hail on July 13th, I am finally eating fresh tomatoes all sizes and colors-red, yellow, gold, purple, black, green striped, cherry, grape, small medium, large and plum. Due to the hail we won't have as many to share this year. (Boohoo as we love sharing our bounty.)As you can tell it's fall here in Canada.
Enjoy your spring and congratulations on your 10th book.
tomatoes
Kaelee
I'm thinking of trying veg plants(esp. tomatoes and cucumbers) out on the balcony next year. I've noticed hail doesn't effect this side of the building as much
Kaelee...
Fresh tomatoes are a little piece of heaven all on their own. The smell, the taste, everything about them is infinitely superior to the red colored rubber balls they offer at the supermarket. When we were in Florence last year I was blown away by how damned delicious their tomatoes were. And I was just having a little fantasy the other day about maybe getting some window boxes and trying to grow some cherry tomatoes this spring and summer. I'm not so good with remembering to water things and such, but you've inspired me...
Hi Alyssa
I spent 2 days in San Fran back around 2000 or so. I remember shopping at Macy's, hanging out in a bar near Union Square where a bunch of people were crowded around a piano singing Minnie the Moocher, Alcatraz, and the man in the hotel opposite who stood in the lit window of his bedroom and..well...serviced himself in a very public way. An eventful two days, to be sure. And perhaps not a fair cross-section of experiences to judge SF by! I would like to go back sometime - glad you enjoyed it so much. And ta for your congrats. Every book is a journey, a battle and a pleasure. Long may the keep on coming!
woo hoo!
Congrats on your tenth, too, Sammas! And yes, novellas count. If I didn't have that extra book, I would count mine as a "whole" book to get the ten, but 11 just didn't have the same ring to it! And I wish I'd had you as my teacher at school - maybe I wouldn't have had to write this book twice. Well, I have bought Apple's Time Capsule to ensure it never happens again, but am yet to set it all up to make that happen. My brother is visiting in a few weeks - I might lean on him to get me hooked up and running. And it's lovely to be here - thanks for letting me have one of your blog dates, much appreciated.
Ten
Hi Sarah,
Congrats on the release of your tenth book. I just saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" on dvd and spent two hours laughing. Some people might say that it's a stupid comedy, but that's all I was looking for. During the weekend, I'm looking to relax and this movie provided me with entertainment with crass jokes.
Christa
We always buy quite big tomato plants and we do grow a few in big pots every year as well as in the garden. We are down to 23 plants this year but last year we had 40. This is Calgary so we don't get enough frost free days to get really big crops. Only thing you have to watch with potted tomato plants is that they don't dry out too much.
Oh!
I really want to see this movie. I love Judd Apatow films, and I know he produced this. I have a fond attachment to Jason Segal and Seth Rogen because they were in Freaks and Geeks, which was such a lovely, warm hearted, funny series. So, I am gagging to get to a cinema and have a good laugh. I hear there is a break up scene where the hero is utterly naked and flaccid. Can't go wrong with that kind of a kick off....
SARAH!!!
I hadn't been paying attention to the sidebar listing of upcoming visitors, so I'm thrilled that you're here today!! Yay! It sure sounds like it's been an exciting year for you--moving, finaling, selling, writing, rewriting, shrinking... ;) And ten! Hooray and congratulations! Here's to the next 10! And I can't wait for Amorous Liaisons! I read the stuff on it on eHarlequin and am practically counting the days!
Hmm... right now I'm reading the Little House on the Prairie books (Laura Ingalls Wilder) aloud to my older kids, and we're all really enjoying them! (The youngest wants nothing to do with them, and chooses his own books to read with Daddy during the reading time.) I remember reading these as a child, and it's a pleasure to be enjoying them anew with my children.
Happy spring!!
You know...
I don't think I ever read those books. But I sure did love the TV series. It was a passionate staple in our house for many years. I think it's so great you read with your kids. I don't remember my parents doing that with us when we were little - what a great experience to share. When we were visiting in Melbourne recently, my sister asked my nephews and niece if they wanted me to read them a story and Callum, the middle boy, selected the kids book I wrote for Penguin books down here in NZ. It was the novelisation of a TV series and I was so chuffed to get to sit on the floor in their room and read the first chapter of my book to them. I thought Callum deserved big ups for his diplomatic skills on that one!! Great to chat, Fedora. And I hope you enjoy Amorous Liaison -despite the pain of writing it twice, there's a lot of stuff I like in it, especially exploring the world of a retired ballerina.
Cool!
How awesome that you had a chance to read your own story aloud to your nephews and niece! (I'll have to check to see whether we can get that book here--is it one book or a whole series?)
And yes, I remember loving the TV series, too--I figure that maybe sometime when we're finished with the books, the kids might have fun watching some of the episodes :) And I usually enjoy the reading with the kids, although there are definitely times when I do it less since the two older ones can read themselves now (and I do a lot more of, "Hey, read this to your little brother, please!") I don't remember my parents reading to us, but they must have; I do remember them passing the torch to us to read to our younger brother, too ;)
And I'm definitely looking forward to reading about the dancing!!
The Lost Children
I don't think the book got an international release, so I think it might be a bit hard for you to get your hands on. (Also, books are much more expensive down here - quite a shock to Americans, I think. That one retailed around $20 or so, maybe even more. I'm always so jealous when I see how cheap books are in the US). It's an historical story - about four children who get shipwrecked off the coast of New Zealand and have to find their way down through the North Island on their own to meet up with two of the kids' father. It was a fun series and I had a nice time novelising the scripts.
You know, sometimes it worries me how little I remember of my childhood. A few high points, a few low points. But the rest of it is kind of a foggy mush. Maybe I need to do some memory exercises!
Congrats on your 10th
Congrats on your 10th book.
I enjoy watching the birds on the feeders and in the birdbath.
the birds
We used to have a bird bath at the house I grew up in but I can't ever remember actually seeing any birds in it. Hmmmm. Maybe that was because we had a cat? The older I get (!) the more I enjoy the simple things in life, like a flower or a bright green, new leaf on a tree or even a spiders web shiny with dew. Not to say that a good shoe sale doesn't still get my blood pumping, but you know what I mean, I'm sure. Enjoy those birds!
Hiya, Sarah...
Welcome back!! As always, it's great to hear from you. :P Congrats on the weight loss/diet success! That's got to be such a great feeling!!
As far as what I've really enjoyed lately... The first that came to mind is the fall weather we're having here. :P This is my absolute favorite time of the year. The cooler weather, the crisp, fresh air...even the first snow. (Don't care for the snow aftet that though LOL)
And your new book sounds awesome!! I LOVE the cover. I can't imagine how heartbreaking it must have been to lose so much of the story!! I've lost 8k before and I thought that was the end of the world. LOL Glad you managed to make the best of it. I can't wait to read it!!
Snow?
What's that? My North American friends are always very amused when I tell them that I have seen snow once in my life. In Australia, you have to make a special effort to be that cold and miserable. There's good skiing over here in NZ, however, and I always feel slightly guilty that we're not at least trying to take advantage of its proximity. My partner used to be a physical therapist, and he has told me so many nightmare stories about skiing injuries that it has kind of put me off - that's my excuse anyway. Well, that and the cold/wet thing. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Spring is my favorite season. Especially after the long, wet, overcast winter we've had. Buds on the trees, the smell of jasmine in the air, people actually smiling at you in the street - it's all good!
Wow, Sarah. Congratulations
Wow, Sarah. Congratulations on your 10th Harlequin. Sadly, I've only read two of them before, but they were wonderful and I can't wait for Amorous Liasons. I look forward to checking out your new website.
Since you're here, tell us what's coming next for you, unless that question is answered already, since I haven't read the other posts yet, and I'm going to do that now, lol.

What's next...?
Bookwise, I have a Super Romance out in March - A Natural Father - and then another Blaze in April - She's Got It Bad. I'm working on a Blaze at the moment - just over the halfway hump! - and I am contracted for another Super after that. Big picture-wise, I really want to take a shot at writing a single title in the next twelve months. A few of the Australian writers at the recent RWA conference in Melbourne talked about a little thing they did last year that I thought was pretty cool - 100 words a day for 100 days. No matter what, even if it's last thing at night, you have to do your 100 words. That's all. And if you do 1000 one day, you start from zero the next and still have to cough up your 100 words. I'm hoping this might crack me out of my "I have to wait until I have a good, clear run at this thing" headspace. We shall see!
Oooh...
A Sarah Mayberry book! I'm just about the last person around these parts who hasn't yet read one, probably. LOL But as a future Blaze author myself (thinking positive here!) I'd love to!
Something I've enjoyed lately would have to be a movie - Juno. I saw it last week and thought it was really honest. At the end, I all but raced back to my keyboard.
Good to see you here, Sarah! Glad it's spring where you are...it's fall here and I loooove fall! :)
Cari
Ah, Juno...
We have a very cute "pregnancy test" pen the producers of Juno put out to promote the movie in the Oscars run up. It's always great when a movie resonates with you and inspires your own writing. I saw a lovely, warm French movie called "Hunting and Gathering" recently that did that for me. It starred Audrey Tatou and was a very simple story about a bunch of people living in an old apartment block in Paris. No one was rich or had a glamourous job, and the love story was very basic. But there was so much heart and honesty and just plain old normality in it, I loved it. Made me remember that movies - and stories - don't have to have a gazillion dollars spent on them to make them good. They just have to connect with people. Good luck with your Blaze writing. My personal philosophy on writing is that if you keep knocking on the door, someone will eventually open it. So...happy knocking!
Congrats!
Congratulations on your 10th book!
Something I've enjoyed lately? Last night I went to dinner with my hubby and a couple good friends at my favorite restaurant. Then we went to a show (Avenue Q). In the midst of being pregnant, moving to AK within 2 weeks, and hubby switching jobs, it was wonderful to just take time out and relax with two of the best friends I've ever had.
Snap!
I also had dinner with good friends last night and we had a great time laughing and telling stories. Am now suffering the ill effects, of course, with slight hangover, but it's nights like that that remind me of how good it is to get out and spend time with loved ones. Hope the big move goes well and that the new job is all you guys hope it will be. And congrats on the baby!
congrats on the 10th
congrats on the 10th book
I've enjoyed the fact that we had our living room carpet steam cleaned and now I'm going through the Buffet and Curio cabinet and disposing of many items that I don't use anyway. We are arranging our LR because we also bought a 46" flat screen LCD TV. Things are looking better.
