Desert island choices...
Okay, this has to be quick because I'm at the airport on one of those timed kiosk things. Sorry in advance for typos. I'm staring down the barrel of a 24 hour flight. You folk from North America don't know what long flights are like until you've done long haul from Australia to Europe. The joy, the joy. Preparing is a little like going to the moon. Squishy neck pillow? Check. Lots of books? Check. Soothing face spray? Check. But it got me thinking, this long haul thing. It's kind of like being stranded on a tropical island, being so limited in what you can carry on. So, here is my question for today's blog: if you had to be trapped on a desert island(or flying long haul) and could only choose 1 book, 1 CD, and one food to eat for the entire time, what would it be? Forgive me for delayed responses - I will check in again once I have landed in Paris! Until then, au revoir!!!

Desert Island
One book: Can I pick the encyclopedia? LOL Okay, okay, I think I'd go with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Lots going on but no sex or romance to make me dwell on what I'm missing.
One CD: Probably my Steely Dan: Decade. All time favourite band and a lot of different things on it.
One food: I think I'd pick something boring like eggs just because you can do a lot with them: scrambled, fried, poached. At least it would be a way to shake things up.
Good question and not easy to pick just one!
ani
Interesting...
Harry Potter, Ani? I am intrigued!!! But I totally get not having a hot romance book with you - it would be like taking one of those recipe books with you with big, yummy pictures in it. Reading a hot book on the plane is bad enough...
Hmmmm.
Book: I have different criteria for either scenario, so...
Desert island: Walden. If I'm going to be stuck on a desert island, this is the only book I can think of that would convince me to make the most of it.
Long Haul: I picked up the latest Nora Robert RS, Angels Fall, which lasted me through 4 flights back and forth, if not one extended one. :)
CD: James Taylor, Live 2 CD set
Food: Cheeseburgers. :)
Safe travels, Sarah,
Sam
Mmmmm....
Cheeseburgers. Yum. And picking a TWO CD set is a cunning choice. I think you'd do okay on a desert island, just quietly....
the book would be Adopting
the book would be Adopting Alyssa by Denise Patrick
the CD would be Yanni's latest
the food would be plain potato chips with Dill Pickle dip
Dill pickle dip
This sounds great. When I was a kid, I used to pick the dill pickle out of my McDonald's cheeseburger and give it to my parents. As an adult, I love those little suckers and have a huge fondness for polski agorski dill pickles. But a dip! Is there a recipe or is this one of those things you get from the supermarket, already prepared?
Sounds hot...
Hhmm, being stuck on a desert island sounds miserable...unless there were a lot of trees and a light breeze so I could sit in the shade and not get too hot!! I prefer my heat to come from books...LOL!
Book: Anna Karenina by Tolstoy because I've wanted to read it for a long time! And it is long and denser reading, so it would take a while.
CD: Badly Bent's debut CD. I've been listening to in non-stop for a year and I'm still not tired of it.
Food: Cereal. Even in real life, cereal is always a good pick for a meal or snack for me!
Tolstoy
I guess if there's one way to get to you to read something you've always meant to read, this is it. Going for something with lots of pages and small print is probably a good, practical option. I haven't read Anne Kerenina, either. Maybe for the flight home....? Who am I kidding - I have the attention span of a gnat on the plane, so it has to be something fluffy and fun. This flight, I took two Rachel Gibsons and one of the few Susan Elizabeth Philips that I hadn't read yet. I got through the Philips book and am now up at 3.30 with jetlag, blogging, and about to start in on one of the Gibsons. Then I will be in big trouble, in the middle of Paris with no new books to read!!!! Agh!
Desert Island Choices
Book-Skye O'Malley by Bertrice Small
CD- Anything by Alan Jackson
Food-Raw Veggies
So well behaved
Raw vegetables. Really? You'll live forever, of course. But...really? Not even raw veggies with a side of dip? I salute your virtue and discipline. And I'm adding everyone's musical choices to my listening list to see if I can find someone new for my i-pod. Thanks for playing!
Great question!!
Wow, this is tough and subject to change, but here goes.....
Book: One of the Stephanie Plum books, so I could laugh.
CD: Michael Buble's newest. LOVE his music. The fast songs I could sing along and the slow ones to relax to. Oh, maybe Bon Jovi....I heart him;)
Food: CHOCOLATE!!!
Chocolate
Now we're talking. Sugar, fats, milk protein. It really is almost the perfect food. I bet astronauts take it with them - only problem will be keeping it from melting on the island. Might I suggest a hole in the sand, dug down to where it's cooler? And I vote for Book number two, the one where she burns down the funeral parlour. My favourite.
Choices, choices
Do I have to pick just one? (asked in a whiny voice)
Okay *g*
Book: The Belgariad Series (cheating, I know, its 5 books) or if I can't pass that off as a single book, I'd take Vicki Lewis Thompsons NERD IN SHINING ARMOR for tips on handling deserted island life LOL
CD: Aerosmith's Greatest hits
Food: Chocolate!!!!
Hope you have a FABULOUS trip to Europe, Sarah!!
Rock out, Tawny
If you can find a five-books-in-one version of the Belgariad series, you can take it. Otherwise, you're screwed, lady. But other than that, great choice. I haven't read the Nerd books, but I have them on my to-do list. And once again, chocolate makes its presence felt. When we arrived this afternoon and took a walk through Le Marais, reacquinting ourselves with all our favourite spots from last time, I was once again very impressed by the French addiction to all things chocolate. You can only admire such dedication. Can't wait for daybreak!
Good question...
Book: the Bible--it's got a little of everything--history, romance, good vs evil, hope... And it's so long, it would give me plenty to read.
CD: Dvorak's New World Symphony
Food: sushi... mmmmm....
Sushi...
Another desert island dweller who will live forever thanks to healthy food choices. I have to admit, raw fish and I are not great friends, but the kind of modern sushi they do in Australia now with avocado and cucumber, or teryiaki chicken and avocado etc is yum. As long as I get some wasabi with my chicken nori rolls, I could be quite, happy, too. As for the bible. Wow. Interesting call. There's an on-line magazine called Slate that was doing this feature for a while called Blogging the bible. Basically, one of their contributors would read a bit of the bible each week and and paraphrase the story into modern terms. It was both fascinating, revealing and funny. Thanks for playing, Fedora
My choices
I have to think on the book for a minute, its a hard one
One CD - either KID ROCK's self titled CD or the new Justin Timberlake, FUTURE SEX/LOVESOUNDS
Food - cheeseburgers
Book - Lucky by Jackie Collins
Ah, you've gone for a classic
How I loved Jackie Collins when I was growing up! And Lucky was one of her best. Do you know, apparently when she writes she has no plan, nothing - just sits down and bogs in. Terrifying to a structuralist like me! And I can almost see you rocking out to Justin, having your own private beach party....
YIKES
That is a tough question! LOL
Here are my choices....
Book - Gone With The Wind, because I have never got around to reading it yet and I would have plenty of time to finish it! LOL
CD - Off the top of my head I'm going to say Jimmy Buffet's Greatest Hits. Perfect for the beach! ;-)
Food - Do the limes in a Margarita count??? LOL
Have a safe trip!
Hey, margaritas are food
Definitely! And the lime juice would stop you from developing scurvy, which is important when you're on a desert island, I believe. I have never read Gone with the Wind, either. To be honest, Scarlet kind of annoys me a lot. She's just so wilfull and spoilt. I'm totally with Rhett when he doesn't-give-a-damns her and walks off. But obviously it's a classic and it would be interesting, long reading.
This is HARD!
Okay ~
Book ~ Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day by Toni McGee Causey... Because I know that reading about her awful day will make me feel better about mine
CD ~ Miranda Lambert's Kerosene... I just love the sassy Country chick!
Food ~ Casserole! Is that legal? LOL Okay for real I would go with pasta & sauce... at least that way I'd have carbs for energy.
Ah, pasta
Pasta is definitely my favourite food group. The cafe around the corner where we were living in Melbourne made great spaghetti bolognaise, and I can't wait for the Italian leg of our trip to start. Shoes and pasta in a land shaped like a boot. Heaven.
Desert Island
Book: Any older Nora Roberts book.
CD: The best of CCR
Food: Coffee and anything chocolate.
Have a safe trip and have fun. Please make sure to tell us all about your trip when you get back home. All the Best, Mads:)
only one? argh...
It'd have to be a really big book that I haven't read yet. Um. Vikram Seth, A Suitable Boy - huge, and a friend told me she's read it several times. If all else fails, I could probably re-write a Betty Neels from memory.
CD: Bach, St Matthew's Passion. Ton Koopman conducting.
Food: Brown rice. tasty, nutritious.
Have a safe flight! (BTW, -loving- Take On Me ...)
Ah, Betty Neels
I have read so many of her books over the years. My Nan seemed to have an inexhaustible supply. And very virtuous on the brown rice front. My hat off to you. I just realised I didn't talk about my food choice...I think a really tasty salad with lots of fresh stuff in it would be great. We just went to the Rose Bakery near Montemartre for lunch - they released a cookbook called Breakfast Lunch Tea in October last year, and my partner Chris fell in love with it and the cafe. We trudged up and down streets without a map looking for it today, terribly worried it would be closed like everything else is on Sundays over here. But it was open, and we had delicious salads and pizzetts and I am feeling very benevelent toward all things salad right now... Glad you are enjoying the read. I aim to please!
omg you are in Paris
and still blogging. Now THAT is devotion.
Montmartre. *sigh*.......
Internet access
It seems that everyone has internet access in their homes over here in Paris. I think someone told me it's even free - the government determined to make sure no one gets left behind on the information super highway, perhaps? Anyway, for this month I'm good, business as usual, then Italy is going to be a bit more patchy. Internet cafes all the way. Will definitely be interesting to see how we cope dealing with our compulsive email addiction...
What would I bring?
I would probably bring a large book like Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It would take me a while to read and by the time I was done, I'd probably forget what the beginning was about, so I could read it all over again. :)
As for music, I'd probably bring a CD with various oldie songs. I know I like them and would want to listen to them over and over.
The food one would be a little harder. I'm going to say Chicken Tenders. I can eat them all the time and not get tired of them. (these would be magic chicken tenders that would not spoil on my island of course!)
Kristen
Oldies are great
I think songs that are tried and true is a great choice for CD. They stick in our heads for a reason, right? I read somewhere once that the music of your teen years is the music you identify with the most in life, and I am definitely having an 80's resurgence lately. Having said that, I am not sure what CD I would take. I wonder if it would be breaking my own rules to make my own mixed CD, with a little bit of everything? Hmmm....
