In the News

Just popping in on a quiet day to make sure folks notice our news bar on the left, and if you click MORE (just like on blogs) you'll find all the up to date news for those of us here, and as you can see, the news has been good today. We've done well at All About Romance Karen, Meghan and myself being nominated in their Reader's Choice Awards! Thanks to all of you for doing that -- it's true, regardless of the win, it's nice to be nominated! Especially considering how many books there are out there.

I've never done much in the way of contests, though I'm trying to get more ambitious about it -- I think there are some really good ones, and it's always an honor to be judged well by your colleagues, readers, booksellers, etc and in this industry, it's always nice to have a little boost. So, I'm actually getting ready to send a few books out to some contests, and we'll see. Virtually Perfect placed in a few (The Lorie, I believe, and TARA, when they had it), and About Last Night (I can't remember, but believe it did place somewhere) and Friction (Golden Leaf) and Fascination won a "best cover" award. Since then, I've kind of slacked. I love these contests, and mean no disrespect by forgetting which ones I've had books in, it's just a lot to remember over time, and I need a better way of documenting such things on my website (soon to be redesigned...).

Speaking of which, has everyone received RITA books? Am I the only one waiting on them?

I have acted as contest coordinator for PASIC (Published Authors' Special Interest Chapter) and I enjoyed that but also got a first hand look at how much work goes into these contests -- it's a lot, and for big contests, an enormous among of organizing, timing, and dealing with paperwork.

If you are a reader, do you follow contests that authors win/enter? Do you vote in polls? Writers, do you enter many, or do you volunteer with local chapters?

And don't forget to check out our News -- right on the left!

Contests

Hey, Sam...Congratulations on the nomination!! I used to be a huge fan of contests when I was trying to get published, and I have to say it was an RWA sponsored contest that first attracted my ed's attention to my work. I haven't submitted Flyboy into any contests yet, but keep thinking I might. As far as RITA packages; I got an email that I should be getting some books to judge, but so far I haven't received them. Hopefully this week!

So, congratulations Sam and Megan!! Like you said, Sam, regardless of the win, it's nice to be nominated!

And double congrats right back at you!

And frankly, if they thought Flyboy was erotic, they are going to be absolutely nuts about Overnight Sensation. ;)

Sam

Congrats on the nomination.

Congrats on the nomination. I do vote in some of the polls.

Congrats!

I admit, as a reader, I don't follow the contests very carefully, but I do vote when reminded ;) It must be exciting for you as writers to receive some recognition like awards!

BTW, I do like the new news bar--very cool!

Way to go!

Congratulations, Karen, Megan and Sam!

Congratulations

A big WOW, on being nominated for a Readers Choice Award.
I definitely vote in most of the nominations for awards for my favorite authors. I always figure that my 1 vote could make a difference between a win or loss for my favorite author.
I think I get just as excited as the author does, whenever one of my favorites wins an award. Good Luck to all of you, and I hope you all win. Mads:)

Can't keep up

Hail to the Redskins!

There seem to be so many contests out there that I can't keep up. Sorry to be such a deadbeat, but unless its a big name, some don't mean a whole lot to me. Its like the music, TV, movie awards, there are so many, after a while you lose track. I do vote if its brought to my attention, like the Quills on adwoff, or other awards. But even then, there are those who vote for the same authors under different emails, and find out they can vote numerous times, that its almost like stuffing the ballot box. Sorry to sound so cynical, but sometimes I wonder how much awards mean anymore because there are so many. And even big name awards like the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes almost seem politically motivated nowdays.
