That Dreaded Question...
So, what are your New Years Resolutions? :)
I don't usually make them, not really, since I think in general people just make resolutions that ask too much and are just bound for failure, but I decided instead that the real secret is just keep them simple and doable.
For instance, one year I made a resolution to hang one new thing on our bare walls every month. For the most part, I kept it.
This year, I am resolving to spend a little more time sitting on the floor with my dogs. They love it, and I think it's fun and comforting for them, but I don't usually do it because, let's be honest, I am not a maniac with the vacuum, and as much as I love them, I am allergic, so getting too up close and personal usually leaves me sneezing or itchy. But you know, getting down there a few times a week to pet and play, maybe right before I head up for a shower, will be good for all of us.
So, that's all for me -- see? A very keepable resolution. :) What are yours? Share, or share some past resolutions that you've kept, or not, and I'll pick someone by the end of the week to receive a New Year's gift in the mail. :)
Sam

Resolutions
I agree and my resolutions are easy to do too. This year I want to cook healthier and find some healthier recipes.
yes, keep them as simple as
yes, keep them as simple as possible and you won't be set up for feeling like you failed.
My resolution is to look at most things in a positive way or at least find a positive in everything. Instead of negativity find a positiveness about the situation.
Girls Days
My resolution is do at least one fun thing every month with the girls. It could be as simple as a home manicure/pedicure, or as extravagant as going into Boston for dinner and a show. I really just want to spend time with them, doing things they enjoy.
My resolution is to conquer
My resolution is to conquer the basement. Oh...that's right...you said doable. No, really. I'm going to conquer the basement and I'm going to post photos of the basement before the end of 2009 to prove it!
Jeannie
Oh man...
Just thinking about that makes me weak in the knees, Jeannie, and not necessarily in a good way ;p That should be one of my resolutions, too, although it really needs to extend to the entire house. *sigh*
Actually, I try to think of these things I resolve as goals, and try to figure out how I can take steps towards them. Otherwise I get horribly discouraged when my life isn't simply transformed the way I want it to be, in an instant.
You are wise, Fedora. I'm
You are wise, Fedora. I'm thinking of working for 15-20 minutes after I get home from school. Fifteen minutes is doable (thus meeting Sam's requirements). ;-)
Resolutions
I don't generally make resolutions at the New Year (I make the ones that count at Rosh Hashanna) but this year I have a few. I don't know if they're all doable or not but I plan to try.
Personal: Lose 30 lbs. I keep on and on about this one but this is the year I'm really going to do it.
Professionally: Find a new job that challenges me, offers me respect, and with a good group of people. I want a job I can retire from.
Spiritually: Have faith in the Faith. Really listen and open myself up more spiritually.

I don't make resolutions as a rule
I don't make resolutions as I usually get discouraged when I fail in February. LOL
A few years ago my husband and I decided to start using our many cookbooks and although we haven't tried something new every week as planned we have tried a lot of new ideas and foods. I consider that a success.
I'd like to be a more positive person and yes I would love to have a clean basement, too. Hopefully the first one is doable as I'm sure the last one isn't.
Lastly my goal for 2009 which I posted on eHarlequin was to only buy new books in 2009. This should reduce my to be read piles and also help out some of my favorite authors.
I Did It
Hail to the Redskins!
For the sake of my marriage and mental health, in 2008, I resolved to return all the baggage I had been carrying back to my husband. I stuck with it and as a result, I am a stronger person and have a stronger marriage. Was it hard? YES, and many times I felt like I was going crazy. I even came up with a plan to leave him, and when he saw how serious I was, he started working at the marriage also, and getting rid of his baggage that I was no longer carrying.
This year.....I'm going to forge a new relationship with my in-laws. That relationship has suffered over the last several years as a result of our failing marriage. My mom pointed out that my resentment toward them was going to kill our marriage as much as carrying dh's baggage had almost killed it. One of the pieces of baggage I was carrying was catering to his parents like he was. That was the biggest piece of resentment I had, they didn't appreciate it. So, I'm going to have an ADULT relationship with them. I'll show them the respect they deserve as in-laws, but I'm not going out of my way to please them the way dh is. If he wants to continue to do so, he can, thats his choice, but I'm not. I started at Christmas, and I was a LOT less stressed, and was more at peace than I had been in a long time. I don't care after 20yrs what my MIL thinks of my basement. Sure, I cleaned it up so my neices and nephews would be safe playing down there. My MIL had foot surgery and didn't even go down there. I'm working New Years Day, and if I've had a bad day at work, I'm not going to impose my bad mood on my in-laws, I'll tell them I had a bad day and am going home. DH is going over there, but I'll go if I'm up to it. Why play nice if they aren't going to appreciate my efforts. My dog will give me more sympathy than they will. If this is cold, I'm sorry, but I've done it dh's way for 20yrs and all I've gotten is stressed out and high BP. I hope to have less stress and lower my BP as a result.
I prefer the word goals,
I prefer the word goals, rather than resolution.
I want to spend more time with my grandchildren in 2009.
Health
My resolution is to eat healthier and exercise more regularly. I'll be laying off the junk food and eating more fruits and veggies.
Resolving not to resolve...
I don't make a lot of resolutions myself, but this year, I want to spend more time on the things that matter most, and less time on things that aren't as worthy. Happy New Year everyone! :)

Why?
Why make a New Year's resolution? Does the date help people keep their promises? I find having an actual date goal to be a much better motivator. "Lose 10lbs by cousin's wedding" "Clean out garage before parents come for the holidays so I won't be humiliated"
It sounds a bit cynical but, the changing of the calendar never helped me obtain a goal. Having an event-based deadline works better for me.
New Year's Resolutions
Plan a budget and stick to it.
Plan a diet and exercise regiment and stick to it.
Organize my house and stick to it.
LOL
Deidre
love your little resolutions
something you enjoy doing and something that is doable, that you don't mind doing
I try not to make resolutions especially ones that aren't achievable. This coming year I'm gonna try cutting back on buying books. Order books I really want not just order books because they are part of special. I'm going to try and only order once a month from ehar. Also another book related one, going to be more selective when it comes to keepers.
I'm on the same resolution bandwagon..
DH wants me to cook healthier, lower fat, etc. I've been watching a lot of "Emeril Green" and buying new cookbooks ;-)

Back, sorta
Sorry I have been in absentia, folks -- coming back from CT and recovering from one Christmas and then had a couple days getting ready for family stuff here, there hasn't been too much time to breathe... Soon.
Thanks for all sharing your resolutions, or lack thereof. *G* I have added using my tarot more to my resolutions. I used my cards a bit this past year, but not nearly enough, and they are a nice daily/weekly focusing tool, so going to get back to that.
Odd as it may sound, I need to read more romance, as well. I have been reading mystery/UF more heavily this year, and I love it, but I think I want to get back to more romance. It's good for my head, and my heart. :)
Happy New Year,
Sam
Happy New Year!!
Just popping in to wish everyone here a safe and happy New Years!!
Looking forward to 09 with all of you!
Thanks especially to all the authors who so generously share their time and thoughts with us!

I resolve...
to find more time to talk to my husband. It's so easy to let our work get the bulk of our time--we're both workaholics--but we also put the kids first a lot. I want to make sure we make time for each other, too. It shouldn't be too hard to make that commitment---I REALLY like him.
Hugs all & Happy New Year!

a little late, but
Okay, a lot late, but thought I'd chime in and say Happy New Year to everyone here.
I gave up making resolutions years ago. I never keep them and it just depresses me. Normally if I attempt any life changes at a particular time during the year I choose my birthday, which unfortunately is coming up soon. It's not one of the "big" ones this year, but jut one year shy. After the one this year I'll just celebrate the anniversary of my 49th year.
Okay, so off topic. Sorry.
Good luck to everyone who is making positive changes for 2009. All the best to you!
And congratulations to ThatBrunette!
