Hi everyone! I’m excited to be blogging here at Exploding Cigars. My debut novel Kate’s Pride was released earlier this year. It’s a historical women’s fiction that deals with how we handle the breakdown of the life we’ve known. I’m going to address the topic of the catch phrase here: Love is an exploding cigar we willingly smoke. And don’t we just. Not just as a woman to a man we hope to build a life with, but also our family and friends. We put ourselves out there, give our heart and hope magical things will happen. But sometimes they don’t.

KatesPride_0.jpg Love, in all its many forms, and the loss of it is the underlying theme of Kate’s Pride. Kate gives her love to a man who walks out as soon as he finds out she’s pregnant with his child. Talk about an exploding cigar! In Kate’s world it’s 1867 and she’s broken a big taboo. But she has her family…right? Home is where they have to take us in. Right?

Unfortunately for Kate it doesn’t happen that way. Another exploding cigar.

I believe everyone counts on their family to be there for them in bad times. I mean the whole world can go to hell in a hand basket, but we’ve still got that base to stand on. And that’s true in so many circumstances. But how would be we deal with the fall out if that base shattered? When we have no one but ourselves to lean on? Do we dig deep and stand tall or do we fall apart?

I’d like to believe I’d be one of those who stands tall, but none of us really know how we’d react in those circumstances. With Kate, I wrote a story about a strong woman who builds a new life for herself out of the ashes of betrayal. Betrayal by the man she loved, betrayal by her family and betrayal of the community in which she grew up.

The story of Kate is loosely based on the life of one of my own great great grandmothers. I had a bare handful of factual information about her and no idea of what her life was actually like. I took those facts, made some extrapolations based on them and created a story I hope will touch many hearts.

So, what do you think you would do in Kate’s place? Would you stand tall?

I’m giving away an autographed copy of Kate’s Pride to a registered user here at Cigars (chosen at random) so please share your thoughts.

Kate's Pride sounds like a great read.
I would hope I would stand tall but I think you never know how you react until you are in the situation

Hey Renee, welcome!

This is a great post...

Just a reminder, for those of you posting, if you want to qualify for contests, you have to register on the site -- if your name shows up on a post as "not verified" you aren't registered, and it's easy, so go do! :)

Renee, that sounds like a really powerful theme -- have you read Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior? It's an autobiography that has some similar issues, and a wonderful book.

I have some experience with life disintegrating and reforming under my feet, we probably all do, but I've been fortunate enough to have people who were there for me, so it's hard for me to imagine how someone gets by without that. Still, I suppose in Kate's place, she has her baby, and though unborn, that would give her something to grab onto -- she's not really alone, though she's the one who has to get herself through. In her position, I suppose that's how I'd think... it's not just about me, it's about the baby, too. And even if the world at large is unforgiving, there will be people or a place somewhere where she can fit in, I would hope, because she can't be the only one. I imagine even in the current day there are probably a lot of people who find themselves in similar situations, and it's hard to think about when I feel so lucky to be part of the family, marriage, and circle of friends that I have...

Hi Sam - Thanks again for inviting me to be here. I'm sorry to hear you've had rough places in your life but glad you had people to help you with it. I'm very close to my own family. I grew up amidst my grandparents, their brothers and sisters and cousins too numerous to count, so I feel I was very lucky in that. Kate's story is a hard one and initially she doesn't feel that the baby is something to live for. She sees it as the reason for everything she's lost and is resentful of it.

I think I should be verified now

yes indeedy :)

I'm also curious about the illustrations?

I noticed on amazon they list your illustrator -- is that just the covers, or inside, too?

My hubby is a graphic designer and Wings allows authors to use their own cover designers if they want. So hubby asked what I wanted for the cover and we collaborated on it. I think it's perfect for the story.

I'm Hooked!

Hi Renee, and welcome to Cigars!! Wow...this book sounds fabulous! I definitely know what I'm doing on my way home from work this afternoon; hitting my local B&N!

I think we all hope our family will be our safety net when life sweeps our feet out from under us. Thankfully, my family has always been there, through thick and thin.

In my freshman year of college, my roommate became pregnant. Her parents told her she couldn't come home for Christmas because she was a bad role model for her younger siblings, and they didn't want to have to explain her shame to the younger brother and sister. Can you imagine? They expected her to just stay on campus until the baby was born, then give it up for adoption and continue on with her life. They didn't want to know about it, didn't want to deal with it, and didn't want to support her in any way. And that was 1981, not 1867!!

She decided to dig in deep and stand tall. Thankfully, her boyfriend was also this amazing guy. He was a senior and lived off campus, and his family took her in with open arms. She delivered a healthy boy, they got married, she finished her degree, and they've been together now for 25 years. I just love happy endings!

What a great story, Karen!

That's an incredible story! Unfortunate, yet inspirational at the same time. Sounds like your roommate really lucked out with great in-laws--I know lots of women (myself included) who aren't so fortunate!

Reply to I'm Hooked

Thanks Karen. Unfortunately the book isn't available in stores, but you can get it at the publisher website. Like you I've always had a very strong family relationship for which I'm truly grateful.

That's awful about your college roommate. And yes, a child out of wedlock can still be a big deal even in our modern society. A friend of my mother's got pregnant in high school and had to face a very similar situation to your room mate. That was in the late fifties. So some things never change. My Mom's friend ended up giving the child up for adoption and her relationship with her family never recovered. I'm so glad the boyfriends family was there for your friend along with the boyfriend. And their 25 years together just go to show that sometimes wonderful things still happen!

Thank you!

Oh, thanks, Renee! I would have been at B&N, totally frustrated...now off to wings-press.com to order...

I would love this book!

Oh, my goodness...I have to get this book. I'm in a college history class right now and we just finished up the post-Civil War unit. I am loving this class--which is ironic because I hated it in high school ten years ago--and would absolutely love to read about your GG grandmother's, er, Kate's :), story and how life was for her then, especially in that situation!!

If I win the book, great, but I'll definitely be buying it if I don't!

Thanks for blogging here today, Renee!

LOL. I accidentally hit the enter key before I wrote my reply. Sorry about that.

Thanks for your comment!

Researching the background for this book was truly interesting. Previously I'd thought everyone south of the Mason Dixon line was a Confederate and every one north of the line was a Yankee. I found out that McNairy County, TN (where the book is set) was a microcosm of the war. Almost 50% of the county was for the Union and 50% for the Confederacy.

One of the factual pieces of information I had about my GG Grandmother was that she named her second son Sherman. That was in 1873 so I decided she and her family must have been for the Union. I couldn't imagine a Confederate giving her son that name so soon after the end of the Civil War.

I had this happen to me

I was with a man who walked out 6 days before our son was born. He took my car, cleaned out the bank account and took off. He wasn't ready for fatherhood.

Okay, deep breath, I could deal with this. I was a strong woman, right? I immediately called my mommy!

Well, see, I wasn't married to said man. And that really bothered her so she was sorrry, but due to her morals and her church she didn't think she could help me out.

Long story, short, she did come around. In fact, she arrived in time to take me to the hospital and was there when my son was born.

But in those 6 days I learnt that it was truly all up to me.

I had quit my job the day before his disappearance as I hadn't wanted to work with a baby. I called my boss and asked her when I could come back to work (having to swallow my pride and tell her what had happened) and she told me as soon as I was able.

She even told me I could bring the baby to work with me if I needed to.

I had an older woman friend who lived nearby and she offered me the spare bedroom at her place. She rented it to a guy but he offered to sleep on the pull out sofa so I could have some privacy. So I told my landlord I'd be out before the next month.

I contacted another friend, whom I knew had an old car that barely worked but I only had 11 miles to work. I made arrangements to trade her the car for some beautiful handthrown pottery I had that she coveted. The pottery was worth way more than the car so she bought the first tank of gas also.

I had all of this done before my mother showed up. When she came to my door I have to admit, I didn't even want to open it at first but I did and we fell into each other's arms and we worked it out.

But I know I'm a strong woman, even if I sometimes I don't act it.

Wow Ani! What a story! It's wonderful to find people who are so willing to step up to bat for you. I'm really glad you opened the door to your mother even though it was hard for you to do. Sometimes it's so much harder to do the right thing when our pride has been wounded. Kudos to you for being a strong woman.

Sounds great.

Hi Renee. Kate's Pride sounds great. I love books set in this era. I think it is great that you based the book on the life of one of your great grandmothers.

Reply to Crystal GB

Thanks Crystal. I'd always wanted to be a writer and when I got stuck with only a handful of info on my GG Grandmother and it was such polarizing info in a polarizing time period I thought it'd make a good story. Ironically I was writing Kate's Pride when Cold Mountain came out. My hubby went to a book signing, but I had a headache and didn't feel like going. Hubby told Charles Frazier about what I was doing and they talked about the irony of it and Mr. Frazier told hubby to tell me to never give up.

Wow

Renee, your book sounds wonderful, and I agree--I like to think that I'd react with strength and grace to such a tough situation, but I really don't know. (I've been known to crumple under much less strain!)

Ani, thanks for sharing your own story--you are pretty incredible! And I'm glad your mother stepped up and you were able to have some support from her in the end.

No matter my own reactions, I do love reading about strong heroines and how they rise to overcome their circumstances. Those are always wonderfully inspiring stories!

What a wonderful story

What a wonderful story Renee, and one I would look forward to reading. I'm one of those people that I am strong, I can bend, but stretch me so far and I break. But then, take a deep breathe, slowly put the pieces back together again. They may not be the same but I may be better, stronger, more flexible. If I were in Kate's shoes, I would take time to feel sorry for myself, but then I would start to plan and see how it all fits into the big picture of my life and make the most of it.

Thanks Wendy! Kate does build a new life for herself, but whether it is better I leave up to the reader. Like you I've had to face some tough situations (luckily nothing as tough as Kate and some of the commenters here) and have done better at some than at other.

Wow...sounds riveting!

I'm going to have to put Kate's Pride on my WL! Sounds like a great, human story.

I agree, I think we all believe we will stand tall - and we all want to - but we never know until we get up in that situation. I've faced hardships and in some cases I've stood tall and in some, I've tucked tail and run.

Reply to Cathy H

Thanks Cathy! I think it's easy to say what we'd do in any given circumstance if we haven't experienced it ourselves. But when we find ourselves in certain situations it's not so easy to see how to be strong.

Kate's Pride

This sounds like a hearwrenching story. I am not sure how I would handle being in a situation like Kate's. I am very close to my family and could not imagine being rejected like that. How awful! Sounds like Kate goes through alot of hardship in this story.

Reply to Cherierj

Hi Cherie

Kate's story is heart wrenching, but it's also about finding friends in unexpected places and how hard it is to put family behind you - even when they've done you wrong. It was a difficult story for me to write because I'm so close to my own family. I had to reach deep into places I didn't really want to explore and discover what I thought I would feel if I were Kate.

Kates Pride is my kind of read. I love reading Historicals, they are my favorite type of book to read. There doesn't seem to be that many historical writers out there these days.

I love historicals too! I grew up reading Phyllis Whitney, Nora Lofts and Victoria Holt. I've been reading in the industry magazines lately that historicals are making a comeback so hopefully we'll be seeing lots more soon.

HHHMMM

This strikes a chord with me. I've had a couple situations in my life that were difficult, to say the least and found that you can only really count on yourself. Sometimes the people you think will pull you through, are the ones to bail first, unfortunately. The sad part is, when they are ready to act like nothing ever happened, you never forget the things that were said and done. This sure sounds like a great book and I'm glad she pulls herself up and moves on. That's just not easy to do sometimes.

Reply to Hmmm

Hi Jibby - Thanks for your comments. You're right about it being hard to forget or forgive. Kate spent her life wanting to forgive her immediate family, but it didn't work out that way. She did have the love of her sons and friends she made along the way though.

I don't know what I'd do

I don't know what I'd do being in Kate's position.
Acutally my daughter has been in Kate's position (twice now) and it isn't as easy to give unconditional love as I would have hoped it to be.

I'd love to read Kate's Pride and hear her story.

Kate's Pride

The book sounds wonderful since I love historicals. I think more and more families are not there for each other - we're scattered to too many places. Back when your story happened though there's the problem of so much having to listen to tradition and people caring too much sometimes about what other people think. I think most people do stand tall though when necessary.

I would like to think so

I would like to think I would stand tall. When we are in the midst of adversity it doesn't seem like we are strong. We just do what we must but looking back we can see how far we have come. My sister told me 13 years ago that I was the strongest woman she knew and I have never forgotten that and I still try to live up to the compliment.

Pam

I would love to say I would

I would love to say I would stand tall but I don't know until faced with the situation. I have stood tall a few times in my life re: divorce and had family and in-laws not believe me so much as the dh but I forgave even though I could not ever forget.
Thanks for the great story that I think I must read some time.
