Welcome Guest Blogger Nalini Singh!

I’m delighted to be here at Exploding Cigars and looking forward to talking with you all. Given the hero of my newest release Caressed By Ice, I thought we’d discuss the darker side of romance today. I write hot paranormal romances, with a very definite dark edge. I have Psy assassins, men who feel no emotions, as well as changeling shapeshifters who see vengeance as a blood right. And then there are the sociopaths.

I’m not the only writer who has embraced the dark side. But it’s not only us wordsmiths who have been seduced (quite willingly I might add!), readers have, too. Look at any romance bestseller list and you’ll see a far higher percentage of books with darker, harsher edges, than anything else. This comes through in the paranormal sub-genre very clearly. While there are lighter paranormals, most of the big hits tend to be dark.

Caressed_by_Ice_-_Medium_0.jpgI think that part of the lure of paranormal romance is that it allows us to explore that dark side free of guilt. These books offer a freedom from normal constraints that is very, very tempting. For example, we can have lethal alpha heroes, men who would probably scare us in real life, but who are perfect for the dangerous worlds they inhabit.

I have to admit, I adore alpha heroes and it’s probably one of the major reasons I love paranormal romance. I like diving into these fascinating new worlds peopled by tough men and women, where anything is possible, and walking on the dark side is something to savor.

What about you? Do you enjoy walking on the dark side? What do you like about it? Or doesn’t it work for you? Do you prefer laughter instead?

Everyone who is registered at Cigars and comments goes into a random draw – I’ll pick one winner, who will get to choose a book from my backlist (excepting Caressed By Ice, because my author copies of CBI are still crossing the Pacific).

Currently writing the next book in her bestselling Psy/Changeling series—about a race with no emotions, and the sensual changelings who challenge their perfect Silence—she can be found via her website, or hanging out at her blog.

Welcome!

Welcome to Cigars, Nalini. I have to ask -- is that Mark Wahlberg on the cover of Caressed by Ice?? Very, very nice.

I love dark heroes; the darker the better. And a hero without emotions...whew! Nothing like giving the heroine a challenge! It's always so satisfying to see her break down that wall...

Hi Karen! And yes, that's

Hi Karen! And yes, that's totally Mark Wahlberg *Grin* A lot of people have commented on that resemblance. I think the model is the same as on the cover of Lora Leigh's Nauti Boy.

Hello Nalini

I just finished reading Slave to Sensation and Visions of Heat and loved them. My favorite genre is Paranormal romance--though I don't know if I can pinpoint exactly what it is about the genre I love so much. Perhaps it is that combination of Romance, Mystery, Horror, and Fantasy all in one book that makes it so intriguing. A great sexy Alpha Hero doesn't hurt either:)

Kendra

And I have to agree - those alpha heroes are fabulous :)

Hi Nalini

I read a lot of paranormal romance and I do enjoy the darker ones. Since everyone has a dark side, I like how authors are able to delve into that and show how the dark side comes out.

That's a good point Crystal.

That's a good point Crystal. Everyone does have a dark side - I guess these books allow readers and writers to let those sides out to play.

I think you nailed it

Reading about alpha males, whether they be paranormal or not, is a lot safer than actually being with one.

Reading dark novels allows us to explore our own dark sides in a safe way. If the book gets too deep (heart pounding), you can put it down for awhile.

If the bad guy is breathing down your neck, you can go grab a snack. LOL

It's perfect.

I was at Barnes & Noble this weekend and picked up the new book. While there, a young guy (20s??) was looking at another paranormal romance (!!). I suggested your series to him and he bought all three!!

Isn't it interesting about alpha heroes? I mean, a lot of them would probably drive us crazy in real life, but in the pages of a book, wow.

Spot on!

I wholeheartedly agree!! One of the reasons I love books so much, you can escape to them, but you can also escape from them!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That does look like Mark Wahlberg...wow!!

As much as we all know I love my cowboys, I wouldn't mind being bitten by a naughty paranormal guy;) There is something so sexy about them and they always seem to have attitude, which I love. Maybe that's because I have attitude too and would like to dish it right back. It's the danger that appeals to me, since I don't really have any of that in my life. Makes you feel ALIVE:)

Oooooh, gotta love those

Oooooh, gotta love those cowboys, too. Makes me want to pick up a Western!

Hi Nalini!

As an avid paranormal reader, I have to say I love your work. I read anything from light paranormal romance to the darker urban fantasy and horror/paranormal stories. There's just something about peering into the how the "dark side"lives. It's exciting and takes me away from my normal everyday life. Its always a plus when you can find some humor in the stories to lighten up the horror. It makes the characters more real to me.

Wendy, thanks. :)

What you said about some humor to lighten up things is something I really agree with. I think unrelenting tension can get exhausting - plus, it's nice to know the hero/heroine can have fun together!

Reading, not walking...

Hi, Nalini,

I do enjoy alpha heroes in my reading, but I don't know how well I'd respond in real life--it might be a little much. I definitely love the funny, and enjoy that in what I read as well as in reality. Books are so wonderful in that I can read about a dangerous dark hero without being in any danger :)

Imagine if all these alpha

Alpha Males

I love alpha males and you do them great! I just started reading Caressed By Ice and I am loving Judd's and Brenna's story. It is great revisitng with the previous characters as well. I agree with your view of paranormal romance. It is an exciting genre with so much room for creativity. For me, it is a fun escape from the reality of life, even if it is just a little while

HI!

I prefer darker paranormals, and romance in general. They just catch my interest more. I love dark and tortured heroes. I'm not sure what it is about them, maybe it's cause I would never want one in real life lol
Ashley

btw

I LOVE your characters Nalini, I think I said this before in my reader interview, but Slaves to Sensation hit me so much I cried so many times. I felt the heroines emotions so strongly, it's why it is one of my favorite books.

Ashley

Ashley, thank you for that

Ashley, thank you for that lovely compliment :)

And I'm a sucker for those dark and tortured heroes, too. I think part of it because they're just so seductive - we want to help them, to bring them out of the darkness and into the light. It's such an intensely romantic feeling.

I agree

I agree with you both about the tortured heros. I think it makes us feel good as woman if we can save them.

Ash, I need to read this book that made you cry. This might sound strange, but I love when books make me cry.

Hi Nalini

How very cool to have you playing with us here at Cigars. Congrats on your great success with your paranormals. As for your question, well, I think paranormals are the latest genre that allows readers to indulge in a world of total escapism that has very little relationship to real life. It's a bit like the Arabian nights matinee movies I used to love when I was a kid - exotic, dangerous, romantic, but also safe in that you know there is absolutely no danger of encountering anything like it in reality. Unlike some of the darker forensic serial killer books out there, paranormals thrill without making the reader feel real fear and worry about every little creak in the house. Perfect, as far as I am concerned. And yes, I like it dark!
All the best!

Hmmm.

As a reader, I can go either way -- love to laugh, love the dark drama, as long as it's well done, I'm there.

However, as a writer, this is a really pointed question for me at the moment as I'm working on my own paranormal, and while I think my inclination is to try to write something lighter, it's the wrong inclination, because as I think about my characters and the world I set up, I know I have to go dark -- I think it's almost necessary for the arc in a paranormal that you at least start in some kind of dark place, and in a romance, at least, work your way to the light, but it's a given that things will get worse before they get better.

However, as I am a wuss in general, I tend not to deal with that right away, my writer brain always tries to find a way around it, and then I have to revise -- delving into the grittier things, and pulling on the emotions it takes to go there -- is not always an easy process, I think. I hear a lot of contemp writers who won't, for instance, deal with the death of a child or whatnot in their books -- however, I think in good paranormal or romantic suspense, etc you kind of have to be open to going to those places (not saying every book has to include children, etc but using that as an example). I am just figuring it out, but it seems to me that while paranormal can be all the things any other story can be -- romantic, funny, etc -- it has to be dark on some level. . . . I don't know if that makes sense, but FWIW.

Sam

Hmm, that's an interesting

Hmm, that's an interesting way to look at it, Sam. I think part of it depends on what type of paranormal you're writing. If you've got vampires, even with a "light" book, you have to talk about drinking blood.

I do think it's possible to write a funny paranormal, but humor in general is very hard to write, so maybe that's part of the reason there aren't as many around?

Yes,

I'm curious about Sex and the Psychic Witch and lighter books like that -- I think it can be done, and done well, and God knows Charlaine Harris has made me laugh out loud more than once -- but I think my taste runs more where you infuse humor into the dark, it's intense and then you laugh, or you laugh and then it gets really scary or disturbing, etc...

I think people are attracted to dark paranormal for a reason not unlike the attraction to fairytales, which were also dark and laced with black forests, witches, death, violence, threat, etc -- but those little stories had a lot of psychological weight. Not always comfortable, but we want to explore that world...
