A Day in My Writing (and non-writing) Life
I’m writing this blog on Wednesday morning, to send to Sam . I have procrastinated over topics. When I first though about it, days ago, I was inwardly growling over rewrite suggestions. Since then, I have attended to many of them. Rewrites are excellent. So, I get several pages of suggestions from my editor, look at them and think, She’s destroying my book. She doesn’t understand my style, doesn’t understand why people read my books. Then, I start attending to each point. Three chapters along, I think, Not so bad. By the time I’m halfway through, I decide that she knows what she’s doing and her suggestions are making the book much better. Rewrites have vastly improved twenty-three out of twenty-three of my books.
My editor is my first reader. When she points out something she wants changed, she’s essentially saying that what’s there doesn’t work for her. So I do something else. And it’s working again, hooray! Topic 1 concluded for the moment.
I just awoke from dreaming a nearly fully formed romance plot. That was fun. It happens every once in a while. Once a character took me to the place he lived when he was a child. It became the underlying “secret” of the story.
I’ve fed the dogs, and I’m going to the bank next. I have no car, but it’s only a mile from one end of town to the other. Still, it’s winter. Maybe a bit too much snow for my bike, and the dogs will want to go, so we’ll kicksled. There are miles and miles of interesting places just outside of town, and when I had a car a ventured further into these wilds. I miss them, and I miss my friends who live in other mountain communities over the passes. Otherwise, I like not having a car.
I’m going to the bank to cash checks written to me for my friend Lisa’s hats, which I sell for her, mostly to the people I belly dance with. These are awesome hats. Besides working on my rewrite, I also need to attend to my other pets (spiders and snakes), improve the chaotic state of my house and fix the short solo I’ve said I’d do as part of our troupe performance for a fundraiser Saturday. I’ve put something together, but I don’t love it. Topic 2 “A Day in the Life . . .” concludes for now.
Topic 3 (well, truthfully, Topic 1) involved interesting you in my February release The Things We Do for Love . It’s a Harlequin Superromance. There’s a love potion, and the wrong person drinks it.
What are three things going on in your day? Share, and I'll be choosing three winners to receive a copy of my book. (You must be registered here at Cigars to be eligible)

Margot, welcome!
So pleased to have you by the blog, and thank you for your VERY generous giveaway of three books... that's fantastic! The book also sounds fantastic -- I didn't know you could do things like Love Potions in Supers!
My three things for today... writing (of course), hair appt, and have to get some sewing done...and then there will be blogging and so forth, of course!
I also have to say, you nailed the revision mindset... at first the screaming in our heads (NOOOOOO), and then the slow realization that it's all absolutely right, and makes the book so much better. I think my favorite part of revising, actually, is that editors tell us what the book needs, but they rarely tell us what to do -- we get to be creative in how we address revisions, and I find I always enjoy the changes I've made more than what was there in the first place... But even with friends and my agent, I've come to know when someone has really seen something that needs changing because my first reaction is always resistance, LOL. Then, it's like ....yeah, okay.
Sam
Sam, you nailed it
That's exactly right that they tell us what the book needs or what's not working but they don't tell us precisely how to fix it. What the editors do and what we do in response, that teasing it out together, makes everything so much better. You're also right about resistance being a message saying, "Yes, this is definitely something you need to change." Though sometimes its hard for me to hear that message over all my whining.
good news for you
I just spotted that announcement of your 3-book contract for Blaze. Lovely! Congratulations. I keep admiring the hottie on Karen's adjacent cover.
Three Things
Thanks for sharing your day with us! I recall from my early life as a reporter the initial frustration I felt at being edited only to realize later that the article did read better afterward. Still, it's almost like someone criticizing how you dressed your child, lol!
My three things I must accomplish today are (1) meet my husband for lunch (he just this moment called from the airport and is heading back this way. Yay! (2) fax payment for my daughter's senior trip to New York with her art history class, and (3) go to the grocery store and Walmart.
Before the call, the third thing on the list was to work out, but since I already accomplished that I debated whether or not to include it. And now since the DH can fax the payment for me I'll add another from the list: find something for my younger daughter to wear to an interview at school tomorrow. She was nominated to try out for peer leadership next year and made it to the interview round.
what a great family life!
You have a busy day! Your daughters sound like fun, and congratulations and good luck to your younger daughter. Whether she is selected or not, that is already a fine success.
Welcome to Cigars!
Margot, welcome to Cigars! I loved hearing about your day; kick-sledding, belly-dancing, dogs and spiders, mountain passes, hand-crafted hats...
Sadly, my day doesn't involve anything nearly as interesting!
1) Stop by CVS and pick up bright red lipstick
2) Help 12-year old daughter get into full costume (think slinky black dress, boa, bombshell blonde wig, stilettos and a long cigarette holder) for her 6th grade play full dress rehearsal. Prevent her father from seeing her, so he won't have a heart attack.
3) Deposit check and scrounge something for dinner (oops, that's two things)
I love the title of your book; I can hear the song playing in my head!
lol on Dad's reaction
Maybe if she's significantly disguised, he won't recognize her and you can pass her off as a college friend. "Darling, this is So-and-So. I know you've heard me mention her. . . ."
Helping her with her costume sounds like fun (and more interesting than spiders and snakes). What is the play?
I just checked out your
I just checked out your website, and that is a fabulous photo of you and Eldar!! I love it.
Thanks, Karen!
My photographer friend is extremely talented. I have two dogs, but when I call one of them both come, and I haven't been able to get one to wait while the other comes (which is not the world's worst training problem). I think I must have tied Gudrun to something or asked John (the photographer) to stand on her lead. We were high in the mountains.
Margot
First let me say I loved "Holding the Baby".
Three things going on in my day--- Not that they are unusual but first I am going to the post office to pick up my mail, then I'm going to play on the computer including reading blogs I keep up with, and finally I am going to read, and if I feel like it and have a little free time I'm going to vacuum the house. Not a real exciting day.
peaceful day!
Ellen, the sound of that day filled me with instant serenity. That sounds perfect to me. What are you reading? (And I'm so glad you liked HOLDING THE BABY).
reading
At the moment I am reading Susan Meier's book "Millionaire Dad, Nanny Needed" for my challenge on eHarlequin. Your book "The Things We Do for Love" arrived with the rest of my Supers and is near the top of my TBR pile. I promise to get to it before the week is up.
I love the title of Susan' book
In Jane-Austenese, it sounds like a very eligible situation for both.
Glad to have you here, Margot!!
Three things...
1) Must work for a minimum of 3 hours today.
2) Feed self and children. (That's a biggie, since I often forget for me and they often reject.)
3) Must meet daily writing goal and see if I can stuff a few hundred words on top. THIIIIIIIIIS close to finishing book and it's making me twitch. :)
4) A bonus: Son has Valentine's Day party at school today. MUST peek in his bag when he gets back, lol.
hooray!
Congratulations on being this close! Another great thing about rewrites (IMO) is that they're easier than the first time around. Do you think? Are any of your children at the age where they give Valentines to everyone at the class party? (elementary school) Sometimes I like to buy a bunch of those and give them to everyone I know. Good thing about very small towns.
Hi, Margot!
Today's top three are: laundry, food prep (we're planning on going out of town and I'm hoping to get stuff chopped up before we leave so we don't have to do it when we get there), and cleaning out the car. I'd much rather be curled up with a book! ;) You've been writing for a long time, Margot! Congrats on your latest--it sounds like another good one!
thanks, fedora
You're very organized. Good plan to do food prep before you go--more time for fun when you get where you're going. Have a safe and wonderful trip!
update on yesterday
Okay, so the above post was written Wednesday. Have to tell you more of these stories. One of the cornsnakes shed, so I have a new skin to add to my collection for a tribal belly dance hip belt. The ball pythons' sheds--when they do shed--are gunked up in balls, less suitable. On the way to the bank, my dogs were accosted by another dog on the street. While I avoided falling (from the sled), it was a little tense, so I did ask the sheriff to speak to the owners, not to charge them but let them know about the problem. (And it's always a problem with this dog.) Anyhow, the sheriff's department is planning to start enforcing its myriad animal laws, so I wrote an article for the paper outlining what these are and quoting various residents various feelings about enforcement, sans editorializing. And I worked on the solo again and again and again, and I'm rather liking it. We're dancing to "Mushroom Belly" and to "What's the Altitude?" (this last is truly excellent hip hop by Cut Chemist). We're all practicing together tonight. We'll be on a stage, which is different for most of us, who have only performed in the studio.
Clean. Clean. Clean.
That's my day. Sheesh, I like your day a whole lot better. Dog sleds, belllydancing, snake skins....
The book looks great. Can't wait to get a hold of it.
On the subject of cleaning
But don't you love it when it's done? By the way, absolutely the best gift for anyone who takes even the slightest pleasure, ever, in making their home as they like, is CLEARING CLUTTER WITH FENG SHUI by Karen Armstrong. It is soooo inspiring AND entertaining. The problem most people have is stopping. You want to just keep decluttering because it's fun and feels good. This is also available on audio, also delightful; she's British and has a charming voice.
WOW!!
Your day is much more interesting than mine.
My day today:
1. Work part time. :-(
2. Go grocery shopping.
3. Check the paper and Craigslist to see if there are any new jobs to apply for.
4. Check phone messages and email to see if any of my other resumes have gotten any hits.
5. Play too much solitaire.
6. Try not to get too down and remember that Tomorrow is another day!
ani
Good luck with job-hunting, Ani!
What kind of work are you looking for? I'm a solitaire-head, too. Lately, I love Forty Thieves.
Solitaire
I'm currently smitten with Bakers Dozen. I love to see the cards go flying up towards the top when I win. LOL
3 things in my day
1) we moved desks at my work and we have to have phones moved, update computers with the right applications - a big hassle and very time consuming
2) getting the oil changed in my car this evening and hoping they offer a free car wash
3) working on my story and thinking of conflict for my next one since I am almost finished with my first.
- and that's my day!

Yuk. I'm bipolar. I hope your depression lifts soon. Sounds like you're doing healthful things, at least.
Three things
Oooohh, I want to play.
Three things I did (or still need to do) today.
1). Took baby girl to work with me where we enjoyed a Starbucks breakfast. We do this once a week. She spends an hour or so with me at work then I take her to daycare.
2). Tried digging up something to report about that didn't bore me to tears.
3). CrossFit workout (in the evening) where I pay someone to torture me with too many crunches, push ups or some other nefarious exercise regime.
:-)
Hi Kim
Do you report for a paper? I just wrote an article for ours. Well, still in progress; I need a couple more quotes. Good luck at CrossFit. More power to you!

Hi
Hi Margot,
Congrats on the new release.
1. Work.
2. Running errands during my lunch time.
3. Ordering take-out for dinner.
Hi Margot
I'm coming in late because I wasn't home today. My husband, his sister and I visited their 87 year old aunt and took her out to lunch. It was a 1 and 1/2 drive away from home. I took her garbage to the bin in the alley for her as it is very icy underfoot. Then after we were home I made a small snack for supper as we had eaten fairly big at lunch. Then we took my sil to the bus. I managed to finish reading a book. I also fed my three cats. I'm excited about your new book. I agree Karen's book cover os great to look at.
ice
You're lovely to do that for your husband's aunt. If she lives in a place where ice is an issue, a wonderful gift is a pair of Get-a-Grip Ice Joggers. She'll probably need someone's help putting them on her walking shoes. I live in an area with serious ice five months of the year. My Columbia boots and a pair of running shoes both have these on all winter.
WINNERS!
The winners of Margot's book are:
ani
Marcie
Kaelee!
Congrats!!! Drop Margot a note at margotearly64@gmail.com with your info to receive your book. :)
Awesome!
Thank you very much. I am so looking forward to reading The Things We do For Love. I began humming Love Potion #9 after I read Margot's entry above and now I'll be singing it all day. Thank you for the insight into one of your days and I hope the character who told you his story makes his way into a book. Good luck with the belly dance.
Hope ani and Marcie enjoy the book as much as I am going to. Thank you again.
Oh wow!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Friday the 13th has always been a lucky day for me and this bears it out!!
Yay!
Happy reading, Ani, Marcie, and Kaelee! Thanks again, Margot!
WooHoo
What a great way to end a not-so-great day! Thanks!!
Congrats Ani and Kaelee!
