It's Friday!

You don't know what an effort it is for me to remember the days of the week. When you work from home and you're kids are all grown up, it simply all slides together as the same. I now think in terms of televisions shows. Tonight is HOUSE or Tonight is 4400.

But MONDAY is special to me because The Beast Within goes live for Pre-order at Harlequin. YAY! This launches a series I really adore writing so I nervously await what readers will think. So Monday comes with nerves and excitement.

One thing about The Beast Within is that the cover hero does not match my hero quite right which makes me nervous. If you go to this page, I have a picture of what the hero looks like to me. I gave that picture to the art department and the cover is completely not that hero. However, in person I have to say the cover is pretty cool. It looks better in hand than on the web. The horse, which is a very small part of the book, is black too look. The horse is named Diablo, and ironic little twist explained in the book, since Jag is a Demon Hunter working for Archangel Raphael.

But anyway, if you bought the book and found out the hero looked different, I wonder if you would visualize the hero the way I wrote him or the way you see him on the cover?

I'd love to hear you're thoughts? Have you noticed this with other books? Do readers know the authors rarely have say in the cover, I wonder? We get input, but it seems it rarely gets much consideration. We have to hope and pray the PR departments know better. And sometimes they do. Unfortunately, sometimes they don't. Though my cover hero isn't excaclty right, I am hoping the different look my cover has from the other Nocturne's will stand out!

But does it look like a western historical time travel? I sort of worry about that too. It's present day and not a western. SEE how us authors make ourselves crazy before a release?!

And so sorry I wasn't responsive to post last week. I had Bronchitis and caught a virus on top of it. I am finally crawling from under my rock though I am not 100%. I am headed to the New Jersey Convention next week so at least I didn't get sick while traveling. That is my usual story! The good news of being sick was that I lost five pounds! HEY! Gotta find the good in everything.

Lisa, hugs on being sick and having your days blur into oneness! I work full-time, and September is always a nightmare. I just try and get through each day until finally, the month is over!

That being said, I just I love the cover for The Beast Within, although I do see where they didn't capture your vision for Jag and Diablo. I've had many friends who've had covers that were much different than the way a) the author envisioned, or b) the way the author described in the book. In the end, however, it didn't seem to hurt them in any way and the books still did very well! And I can't wait to get my hands on this one!

Hugs on being sick, Lisa. I just crawled out of the flu so I'm in great sympathy with you. Although I have to admit... I didn't lose weight. Maybe I'm jealous *g*

As for covers... well, other than the absolute thrill of having my name on them and going "oh yeah, baby, that looks good." as a reader I don't pay a ton of attention to them. I like to imagine the characters as they come into being in 'my' head, based on the authors tone, voice and descriptions. So I might, after finishing a book, glance back at the cover and go "um, wow, that doesn't match what I got from the story" but thats about as far as I'd take it ;-)

Congrats on Monday... I'll be waiting to hear the excited squeals of joy LOL.

If there is a picture on the front cover I may refer back to it. But that doesn't mean I buy into it.

Nora Roberts wrote a book called Entranced (a supernatural thing with witch Morgana and screenwriter Nash). To me, Nash looks NOTHING like the way he was described. My Nash is kind of geeky looking but in a totally good way. His personality was so similar to someone I used to know that he ended up looking like him also. (You don't see Nash on the cover of the original category. You see Morgana and talk about your bad covers! EEEK!)

So the way people look on the cover play very little part in how I picture them in my own mind.

Unless they look like the hero in Karen's Flyboy! He'd better look the same in my head! Or I'm getting too old.

And fun question--I do pay some attention to the cover, and dislike it when it doesn't match the mental picture the author paints for me inside. I tend to override with that one though, so I try not to take the covers too seriously.

It's the same reason I really sometimes dislike movie adaptations though--the actors don't always match what I have in mind after reading the book and then I can't stand that discord! I really do prefer the books! ;)

And I notice the characters on the cover, too. This might sound funny, but I actually flip back to the cover a lot and try to imagine that face making the facial expressions described, etc. However, if the character described is REALLY different than the one on the cover, I do try to go with the author's version. After all, you (and I, an author-in-training :p) don't go through all the trouble of creating and describing your character just to have them overshadowed by a cover that really doesn't do him or her justice.

So your days blurr into one. Try adding to your scenerio the fact that you have had surgery and are in a wheelchair now for 8 weeks. The days are long and boring and it is scarey. Add to that a fall and they get scarer. So yes, I understand fully.
No the cover does not look Western. As my daughter worked for an Agency for awhile, yes I know the author does not chose the cover. I think that is wrong. I think the author should get to pick from a couple of covers and it should be their choice.
I fought the virus before going in for surgery but would not let my Surgeon know I took a cold pill at midnight before going into surgery. I did not want the ankle fusion postponed or I would back out. I have 8 months recover - 8 weeks of which will be in a wheelchair. I cannot go where I want to go.
This weekend I'm home alone except for my daughter coming over to feed cats and dogs and get my mail.

I cannot wait to read "The Beast Within", after checking out theknightsofwhite.com, I am sooooo ready for these guys! That said, I should mention, that while the cover model on TBW is hot, they do make the book appear to be a western-(though I do love a cowboy), not a supernatural warrior.
When I read a book, I tend to create the images of the characters in my head, I may refer to the cover to see if it matches the pictures in my head, but my imagination just "sees" things differently (oh and I'm always the female cover model, in my imaginary body! *g*)

I've been reading romances to long to base my purchases on the covers, some of them are so cheesey! I usually buy known-authors or ones that are recommended or if I like the blurb on the back-though experience has taught me that that is not always accurate. I wish the publishers would let you authors have a little input on the covers!

I do hope you are feeling a lot better by the time you leave for New Jersey and really are able to enjoy the time there.
I do not pay too much attention to covers of books! I read the blurb on the back and decide from it if I want to read it. The cover may sometimes tempt me to pick up the book and read the blurb but has nothing to do with whether I buy it or not. (I've always been a little strange.) I picture the hero/heroine based on how the author describes him/her.

They really should listen more to the authors. I mean, it's your book. I have noticed sometimes that the book doesn't match up with the cover or other way around. I don't let it faze me though because I'm not looking at it as I read anyway.

I usually go back after I have read the book, look at the cover and think "hmmmmm, that doesn't look like I pictured him/them at all...lol. I never really pay attention in the beginning.

Don't sweat the cover. I've read many a book where the characters' descriptions are one thing and the cover is another. I'll think, "Man, they got the hero all wrong," but I don't let it bother me. When I'm reading, I come up with my own description in my head, I rarely base it on the cover. So don't worry. ;)

I am so looking forward to when the book comes out. I have read books when the description of the heros on book covers don't always match how the authors describes him or her. When I am reading I also try to visualize how heros or heroines look. Hope you are feeling better.

Hi Lisa - Sorry to hear that you were sick. Hope you're on the mend now. I took a look at your fantastic Knights of White website when you posted it on our Austin RWA chapter loop and loved it. I read all the bio blurbs for each of the guys (and drooled over their photos) and I must say I'm looking forward to this series. I normally stay away from most paranormal-ish stories, but yours sounds close enough to home for me, not to mention super sexy, so I'm definitely planning on reading them!

As for the cover... I hardly ever pay attention to the pictures. They're so often NOT RIGHT that I've given up. I'd rather picture the characters on my own anyway.

I would have thought your book would have a western theme, yes, and so I can see why you'd be concerned -- that is a huge gaffe on the part of the art dept. Does the back cover clear things up any?

I am looking forward to picking it up, of course, I'm still working to get to Hard and Fast, but that means I can have a LRJ fest one of these weekends. ;)
