Summer's End (and a giveaway!)
My birthday falls on June 21st, and has always marked the beginning of summer for my family, especially since it usually coincides with the end of the school year.
Summer is my husband's favorite season. He puts the boat and docks into the water in early May, and he wears shorts and sandals until November. We'll grill out at least twice a week and have dinner on the patio, and my husband and I will go for a boat ride every evening, weather permitting. But we both disagree on what marks the end of summer.
For me, it's when the kids go back to school, and our routine becomes more regimented. The kids have homework and after-school events, and as the days get shorter, the opportunity for evening boat rides becomes almost non-existent. For my husband, summer is over when he pulls the boat in for the season and drags the docks out of the water, usually the second week in November, or the first snowfall, whichever comes first.
What about you? What marks the end of summer for you? Is it when the kids go back to school? When you close up the summer cottage for the year? Or is it Columbus Day weekend, which in New England seems to mark the true beginning of Autumn.
Post a comment here and you could win an end-of-summer goodie bag, including:
- A summery tote bag
- A pretty Bandana to cover your hair from the blazing sun.
- Chocolate (for obvious reasons).
- One of my backlist books
- One trendy pair of sunglasses
- One scrunchy for your hair. Nothing feels nicer than pulling it up and allowing the breeze to cool you down.
Hopefully we still have lots of summery weekends for you to use your goodies, but if not, these will come in handy for next summer!

Well, for us, there just
Well, for us, there just really isn't any marked difference between summer and fall, because we aren't doing anything different or changing anything we do. Sigh. Though not so much this year since it's been cooler than normal, we do celebrate the idea that it's getting slowly but surely cooler (NJ can be hot, humid and sticky, but not a whole lot this summer, yeah!!! LOL). . . and at some point we just realize we are switching to the sweatshirts, but that's about it. :( Oh so boring. :)

No, not boring!! Someday
No, not boring!! Someday I'll be living in some distant local with a wonderfully temperate climate and I won't know one season from another (I'm thinking somewhere in the Caribbean or South Pacific).
I'm sorry, what?
I couldn't quite read the blog, Karen, since I am sobbing to hard about even thinking of the end of summer... can barely type it. Wah.
I know Fall is lovely -- I love Fall -- if Fall could just stretch right over into Spring, I would be a happy camper, but there is that terrible W thing that happens in between, and I hate to even say it out loud.
I think of Fall as officially more in Oct as well -- I saw some places advertising apples this month, and that's way too early, IMO.
For me, end of summer is usually marked by the Fair, which goes from today through Labor Day. I just hope the warm weather lasts way, way after, though this year it feels like the weather gods said "One month of summer. Okay, no it's over." Literally the temps dropped to fall temps last night and today.
Wah.
Sam
LOL, Sam! I agree with
LOL, Sam! I agree with you...we still have so many warm days in September and October, that I do consider those months to be more summery than autumny. In fact, our first school-shopping trip for my kids was for T-shirts and little skirts, not jeans or sweaters or coats. I'll do that in another 4-6 weeks. Fall is my favorite season, so I always look forward to it. I'm not a big fan of heat or humidity, so the end of summer doesn't impact me as much as it does my husband. But the winter thing (shudder)...I hear you!!
End of Summer
For me, it is when the leaves begin to change color and the days get cooler.
Crystal, it was actually
Crystal, it was actually very cool this morning when I got up, about 53 degrees...not too summery! I think autumn is definitely moving in.
I was born june 21st too !!!
Summer is my favorite season : lond days, warm weather, vacation, summer food... what's not too like ??
For me the end of summer is when my kids go back to school. Right now I'm in the middle of a massive preparation. Next thursday is the big day. My 8 y.o. enters 4th grade and my 3 y.o. enters pre-school...yeah summer is over !!
I kept thinking my kids
I kept thinking my kids weren't going back to school until after Labor Day this year, so it came as a huge shock when my younger daughter informed me that she goes back to school on Tuesday! YIKES! I really thought I had another week of R&R. So this weekend will be the mad scramble for school supplies, decent shoes, etc.
End of summer
Labour day weekend marks the end of summer for me
I know my in-law's close up
I know my in-law's close up their camp on Labor Day, but I have memories of September as being very hot. When I was in college, I had hair down past my rear. It was early September and so hot that I couldn't stand the weight of my own hair and walked into a salon and had it all cut off...nearly 24 inches of it. I love doing something over Columbus Day weekend, but it's usually fall-oriented. I'm with you...Labor Day usually marks the end of summer for me.
I love fall...
I have to admit, this is the first year in over a decade that I am not absolutely begging for summer to be over. Not once did I experience 100+ degree heat this summer. I only got the 90+ temps when I was traveling. Life is good, LOL!! Alaskan summers are fabulous!!
For me, fall seems to start once you've had that first frost, when there is a chill in the air in the mornings and you start to get the crackle of leaves under your feet. Although I'm not as happy to see summer go this year, I'm still excited for the arrival of my favorite season - fall!

I love fall, too! We
I love fall, too! We usually do a family retreat to the White Mountains, with long walks in the woods and hot apple pie at night, and cozy sweaters for the chillier evenings...heaven!
Oooh, that does sound like
Oooh, that does sound like heaven!!
Summer's end
Well, living in Alabama, I can truly say that summer lasts quite a while. Though I usually feel like it's ending about the time September hits. It just seems like it's time to start thinking about fall things. But when I lived in Hawaii, summer was year round. And that was weird, honestly. If I'd grown up there, it wouldn't have been, but I didn't realize how much I thought of things seasonally until there were no seasons. (There is a summer and winter in HI, marked by dry and wet, but it's not that big a difference.)
Yes...
I think we do become sort of linked to the climate we live in, and it would be hard to make drastic changes... I like seasonal change, I just hate winter. Sounds like I need to be where you are. ;)
However, when we were in SanDiego, just a visit, it was so "the same" all the time, it drove me crazy within a week. :)
The biggest problem, and I dread it, is that I do tend to get more "blue" in winter, and my writing suffers for it. I can pretty much pick out that every book I write over the winter needs heavy editing...the last book I wrote over winter needed almost a complete rewrite. Yet, the ones I have written now, in the past few months, almost no revisions or edits.
I don't know how to get over it though, except to move. Sometimes travel helps, getting away, so I hope we can at least make it to FL for a weekend this winter...

Labor Day
Labor Day marks the end of summer for me because that was when school was start again. The first day of school was always the Tuesday after Labor Day.
End of Summer
For me it's when the area farms start making apple cider. The taste and smell of that eases the disappointment of the end of summer.
Mmmm...there is something
Mmmm...there is something about cider (and cider donuts) that helps make the transition a little easier!
Summer
For many years summer always felt like it was over after the kids went back to school. The schedule is different and the days are not quite as long as they used to be.
Yes, exactly. I always hate
Yes, exactly. I always hate having to bug the kids to go to bed early, and I really dislike having to wake them up early! They're so cranky, LOL.
End of Summer
For me it is Aug 31 just because Sept is the start of the fall months, even though I know we can still have beautiful weather in Sept.
End of Summer
For me it is when the kids go back to school. Nothing says it like going to the store and shopping for the best prices on school supples along with lots of other families. Shopping in those aisles is like shopping during Christmas. Talk about crazy!
I think my kids think of
I think my kids think of back-to-school shopping as another holiday, LOL! My younger daughter has been gleefully rubbing her hands together for weeks now in anticipation of shopping for school supplies.
Labor Day weekend marks the

Summer ends when school begins
At least that's how it seems around my household these days though weather-wise it definitely feels like summer in Georgia! But my children are already in school, one in her first year of college and the other a junior in high school. The first HS football game of the season was last weekend and the lazy days of summer are a thing of the past.
Probably in a couple of years when my girls are out of college and in the workforce we'll go back to following the calendar and weather to note the season changes, but until then, summer ends when school begins.
~Betty
Football season...I love
Football season...I love football season, but I have to say that this year I was not ready for the pre-season games, even knowing Tom Brady was back in action! It seemed too soon! My husband said it's summertime for as long as the Red Sox are playing, LOL!
Hmm...
I think the kids starting school again marks the end of summer as we know it :D It doesn't mark the end of summery weather, but the lazy easy days of the summer months are over when the kids head back to routine and schedule... *sigh* I'm a little sniffly over it myself! ;)
I have a good friend who has
I have a good friend who has no kids, but she said that even her routine changes once school is back in session...she's a skater and during the summer months, she can get on the ice to practice at any time, but once school starts, the hockey teams and skating classes dominate the ice time, forcing her to adjust her schedule. So it's not just the parents who feel it...
So true
I love it when kids are back in school, though I don't have little ones anymore. It means the street is quieter, the walking trail is quieter with no kids on bikes going by (especially the boys who tend to make noises that upset the dogs).
I love it when they are back, LOL.
Sam
Back to school deos it for me.
It always has, the endless days at home playing till nearly midnight outside when we were growing up and sleeping in. that all goes away when school starts. and now that my little boy is in kindergarten i can get back to a more productive writing wchedule. And even though he started wendesday here, my writing hasnt improved this week. I think my body is decpmpressing from trying to keep him occupied all summer long. Lol
That and hes lovin having the extra kids to play with too.
As for fall, i absolutley love fall. makes me drink more coffee( sometimes with kahluha in it, yummy) and makes me want to bake more. go figure.
happy writing ladies

Hmm...
Well, it used to be school. This is the first year in a long, long time that I don't have school. (Although I'll still be teaching this program called Street Law...)
And I'm probably going to be going back to school next year :P
So... yes. School. I even still count my "years" sometimes based on the school year- not the calendar year, which can be confusing.
:) Karen, my sister has the same birthday! And mine's a week later - how fun. I've always loved summer because of no school, and tons of birthdays. Going to the pool, playing outside, all good things.
Summers End
To me summer doesn't end until it is to cold to get outside to do anything. It does kind of wind down a little, but I love the fall weather for working outside if it doesn't rain to much. I still plan on cleaning out the building outside and maybe clean some more of my windows. So I think I got at least another month.
