Series Books...
Patience is not my forte.
I recently picked up an historical by Elizabeth Hoyt called To Seduce a Sinner, not realizing it was the second book in a 4-book series. I loved it so much that I went back and bought books 1 and 2, but now I have to wait six months until the fourth book is released. Although I’m looking forward to November when I can finally buy the fourth book, in retrospect I wish I had waited until I had all four books in my greedy little hands before I began reading them. I can think of few things more frustrating than getting sucked into a series and then having to wait…and wait….and wait to see how everything turns out!
The same thing happened when I read the first book in Lisa Kleypas’ THE WALLFLOWER series…and again with Kathryn Smith’s THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE BLOOD series…and Kresley Cole’s IMMORTALS AFTER DARK series. And although I loved each book in these series, I can’t tell you how difficult it was to wait for each subsequent book to be released. These historical and paranormal series aren't the only books that have hooked me. I’m a huge fan of Suzanne Brockmann’s TROUBLESHOOTER series, and I really enjoyed the WINSTON BROTHERS series, by Lori Foster.
The characters in each of these books captured my imagination and pulled me into their respective stories so much, that buying the next book became a physical imperative for me. There's nothing I like better than secondary characters--whether they are friends of the hero or heroine, siblings, former love interests, or even villains, who are so compelling that they demand to have their own story. And I really enjoy getting glimpses of the other characters whose stories have already been written, to see how their happily-ever-afters are progressing.
What about you? Do you enjoy series, and are you willing to wait six months or more for the next installment?

I need the break.
I'm the total opposite.
I love a series, but only if it's broken up. After two books, I start getting bored. I also notice that if I read more than two books by the same author in a row, even if it's not a series, I start getting bored (exception: Susan Elizabeth Phillips).
That said, I've read all the Elizabeth Hoyts and they are amazing, original, and fresh--each and every one. I just like the break between them.
Diana, I decided if I had to
Diana, I decided if I had to wait for Book 4 in this particular series, then at least I could go back and buy the three books in her THREE PRINCES series. I made a special stop at B&N on my way home from work last night, only to discover they didn't carry ANY of Elizabeth Hoyt's books! They had just one copy of To Beguile a Beast, which I had already read. I couldn't believe it. I did request that they stock copies of her backlist, but we'll see...
I did, however, pick up all three books from another series...THE COURTSHIP WARS trilogy by Nicole Jordan. I've never read any of her books, so am looking forward to them. I have two weeks of business travel beginning on Sunday, with lots of connecting flights and layovers, so wanted to stock up on some good reading to bring with me.
Any recommendations??
BTW, if anyone has some recommendations for some good series, let me know! I'm in reading-mode right now and can't get my hands on enough books.
Love series
Especially since I have been reading a lot of mystery, I love series, since mystery is all series. I love the Brockmann and Foster series, as well as several of Nora's as well... but I think for the most part I came to them after most of the books were out. Then there is JD Robb, Sue Grafton, so many others. I think category books are some of the only ones I read anymore that aren't series (though some are). But I am willing to wait for new installments, definitely. I agree with Diana, sometimes the wait in between makes the reading experience better.
What I dislike, and I've vetched about this before, is when a series is in paperback for it's beginning, say 4-5 books are in PB, and it takes off and then the next installment is in hardcover, and three times the price. I seriously dislike that move (and it's not the author's fault, it's the publisher). But the Kindle helps mitigate that a little, as hardcovers are all 9.99, but then the publishers won't always Kindle new releases for that reason.
But, in short, yes, I love series.
Sam
Sam, I just got sucked into
Sam, I just got sucked into the hardcover trap when my younger daughter asked for the next installment in Brandon Mull's Fablehaven fantasy series. She's read the first three books and I agreed to buy the fourth book when it came out this past weekend. I choked when I realized it was only in hard cover at a whopping price of $19.95. I did buy it for her, but wasn't overly happy about it.
yes and no
I love series, but then I get tired of waiting between release dates. But now my TBR pile is high - I can buy them all (for example Susan Mallery's Bakery sister series) and read them all at once. Sometimes, if I read too many in a row, I find I need the break then when I read them again, can enjoy them again.
So - it's a little bit of both. I can read them all at once or take a break in between.
But overall to answer your questions - I enjoy series and am willing to wait.
Oh - I'm with Sam on the PB to HB. Aargh. But I have found with JD Robb's - if you can wait 6 months after the HB release, you can get it in PB. But there's that waiting thing again.
Yes...
I love a series, but I HATE the wait. I know it's terribly hard on writers, but I love when the publisher chooses to release the books in consecutive months (some of the Blazes have come out that way, or Monica McCarty's Highland books did this year). I like knowing it won't be too long before the next installment! I have also sometimes acquired the books and not read them until I have them all--that's not my favorite thing to do though! Patience isn't really one of my strong suits!
Waiting
I read a lot of fantasy novels and the series experience in that genre spoiled me. So many promising starts either fizzle out or never end. One of my all-time favorite fantasy series remains unfinished to this day. It's so disappointing. I toddle past the author's website every once in a while, but there's nothing new coming. Argh.
As a direct result of the experience with that one unfinished series, I made a new policy: I would not buy a book in a fantasy series until the series was complete. Unfortunately for me, George R.R. Martin's first novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series wasn't labeled clearly on the cover. I read it, loved it, got to the end and realized it was the beginning of a series, and I died a little bit inside. Of course now that series has expanded into many more books than originally planned AND it remains unfinished. Grr. I didn't even read the last book that came out because I'm done. When he finishes the whole thing I'll go back, but not before.
On the romance front, I don't mind reading connected stories and waiting for the next installment as long as the primary romantic couple has a resolution in each book. I do not like it when the romance drags on over several books. I read the whole Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. Several of those books are on my top 10 all-time list and a few others I don't even remember. The family dynamics were so wonderful in those books, though, that I couldn't skip any of them. I loved that family.
I love surprises and I'm a fan of anticipation--I never open my birthday presents until after dinner on the big day. I like thinking about presents more than I like getting them. I guess that ties into why I don't mind waiting until the whole series is written. There are so many books out there, I can always read something else while I'm waiting. :-)
I don't mind waiting...
If I know the author is planning a series I buy the books then when the 3rd or 4th, or last one comes out I start reading. Usually I only do this with a Trilogy or Fourology. If it get longer than that I read them as they come out. What can you do?
I like the anticipation of waiting and knowing I have a few good reads and then I don't forget the characters between.
I, like Sam, do not like when a series starts in PB then goes to HC midway through. That is marketing, but it's also, imho, disrespectful to the buyers. Some books are worth HC, but not all books or series are.
That's another subject. Sorry for rambling.
Hmmmm....
I do like series, but unless the characters really grow and change, I get bored. My favorites are both from Laurie R King - she writes a series with Sherlock Holmes and a much-younger American wife (the story's really about her) and a contemporary series with a lesbian SF detective that's really astonishing. Other favorites - Kathleen O'Reilly's NYC series for Blaze. I didn't like the O'Sullivans as much as I liked her first trilogy but they were great.
I'm in the middle
I am okay waiting for more books to come out in a series--if I weren't okay with it, I never would have read Clan of the Cave Bear! But I am happiest knowing when the series will end. I don't want to be like the poor reader of Robert Jordan's juggernaut who wait and wait and wait between books that grow less and less satisfying even though they are markedly longer.
But, like Diana, I get overloaded if I read too many books in the same series in a row.
Jen, I hear ya!! I was a
Jen, I hear ya!! I was a huge fan of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, but only through the third book and then I sort of lost interest. Too much time in between books, and I'd sort of overdone it on the first few, rereading them over and over. When the Jamie and Claire left Scotland and went to the colonies, the stories lost a lot of their enchantment for me. I also wasn't as interested in Claire and Jamie when they started getting older...hey, I was still in my thirties at the time! It's been a long time since I've read any of the series and sometimes I think I should go back and finish the other books. Now that I'm older, too, maybe the characters will appeal to me again.
I love series books---and
I love series books---and the wait for the next on is hard to take.
Series
I love reading series. It's nice when the books are release back to back in a span of several months, but I also don't mind waiting more than six months or a year for the next installment. I'd rather the author take their time writing a great book instead of rushing and writing a mediocre story. Some of my favorite series include Allison Brennan's No Evil and Stephanie Laurens' Bastion Club.
I enjoy anything by Allison
I enjoy anything by Allison Brennan, and I'm going to check out the Bastion Club series! Thanks for the recommendations!
To wait or not wait
If it is a series in which the books come out each month I have a tendency to wait until I have them all.
If it is a series with books that are spaced several months apart like Deb Salonen's SPOTLIGHT ON SENTINAL PASS I will read them as they come out.
I dont mind the wait
It give me time to do writing on my book, otherwise i'd never get any done. Because once i get a book ilike, nothing will keep me from finishing it. Just ask my husband, he's had several nights sleeping alone while i sit up finishing a book!
Right now i'm working on Stephanie Bond's "Body Movers" books. I was a little behind, had read one and two and loved them, yesterday i bought 3,4,and 5. Then 6 comes out next month. At first they came out in hardcover, but i waited until Paperback. Then they put out 4,5 and 6 in succsession in paperback this year. So i'm excited.
As long as the writing is great i'll wait for a series, if its not then i'll gladly move on. I think an author has to be widely established in their career and very talented to pull off a series and keep readers coming back.
happy writing, and reading!!
