Romantic Movies and a Give-Away!
I received my author copies of Overnight Sensation last week, due out in September. I loved writing this story, and I got just as big a thrill out of holding this book as I did when my first book, Flyboy arrived. I hope that level of excitement never goes away.
The idea for this story came after reading an interview with Keira Knightley about the difficulties of shooting a love scene while the director was shouting instructions at her about how and where to move her body, while the film crew stood by and ate sandwiches! I'll admit it--I'm a movie junkie. There's something about getting pulled into a really great flick that just makes you forget everything else. But after reading the article about Keira, I couldn't help wondering what it's like for the actors when they're required to shoot a love scene with an entire film crew watching! How do they "become" the characters they portray? Does the line between make-believe and reality ever get blurred? As a writer, I couldn't help but see the possibilities...
Aspiring actress Ivy James is thrilled to be cast opposite Hollywood's latest golden boy in a military adventure that's packed with romance. But when the real-life hero shows up on the set as a technical consultant, Ivy's acting skills take a vacation. How can she concentrate on the love scenes with special ops soldier Garrett Stokes watching her every move? She can't. But when he offers to coach her through the scenes, sparks fly, both on-screen and off.
For a chance to win an advance copy of Overnight Sensation, tell me the name of your favorite romantic movie that features a great love scene (I'm always looking for good ones!). Personally, I loved the movie 300. The love scene between King Leonidas (played to perfection by Gerard Butler) and Queen Gorgo was fabulous. I also loved the scene in the movie Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life with Lara Croft and bad boy Terri Sheridan (played by--you guessed it--Gerard Butler!). She has him on the steel floor of a huge cargo ship, with his hands pinned over his head while she kisses his neck and chest. His expression gives me shivers. Tell me the name of your favorite flick for a chance to win. I'll pick a name on Friday. Remember, you have to be registered to win!

I'll admit I don't watch a lot of movies...
But I love the piano scene between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Very romantic and sensual, with the built-in tension of the movie's premise as backdrop. And, of course, it was made in the days of prime Richard Gere hotness, so...yeah. LOL
Overnight Sensation sounds fabulous, Karen! I love the cover, too. ;)
Cari
Yes, Cari, that was a
Yes, Cari, that was a totally hot scene! Pretty Woman is still one of my all-time favorite movies!
Mine are a little more quirky
Some of my favourites:
The scene in the rain between George Peppard and Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffanys) when she finally realizes it's okay to love him back and commit.
The scene in the bar after hours between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts (Pretty Woman) when he's playing piano. She has a robe on and he sets her on the piano and opens her robe with kisses.
The dance scene between Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr in Hope Floats because you can sense her heart is opening up.
When Indy and Marion are rescued at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark and he's all battered and blue. She's trying to kiss him and he tells her that he hurts. She, exasperated, says Where doesn't it hurt? He points to his cheek and she kisses it. Then he says And Here and she kisses that and you just know that suddenly he doesn't hurt as much as he thought and there are going to be lots more kisses and other things happening.
Those are all heart melting scenes to me.
ani
Ani, I think I've seen
Ani, I think I've seen Breakfast at Tiffany's a dozen times, and that scene still makes me choke up. And I love Harry Connick Jr. in Hope Floats! I love the scene where he's showing her his half-built house and you just know he wants to share it with her...and at the end, when he sweeps her up and puts her in his truck...totally romantic!
I thought of another
Let's not forget Love, Actually:
When Colin Firth (swoon) learns another language so he can return to France (its not French) and tell the woman he loves her and proposes to her in the restaurant and gives her the big kiss;
when (sorry can't imdb from work) the guy shows up at Keira Knightley's flat and pretends he's caroling and tells her through placards that he's in love with her and that's never going to change but he's going to try to move on (she's married to his best friend);
when Liam Neesan takes his young stepchild to the airport just so the little boy can tell the girl he loves how he feels about her;
when Hugh Grant (as PM of England) goes knocking on doors in the working class neighbourhood trying to find the woman who used to work for him how he feels for her.
Lots of good ones in that movie!!
Okay, I must watch this
Okay, I must watch this movie! I've seen the ending, but never the beginning. I totally loved how the PM was knocking on everyone's doors, trying to find the woman he was in love with, though. Very, very romantic!
Well...
I don't see many movies - but I recently watched The Other Boleyn Girl this past weekend - and I thought a really nice love scene was between Mary Boleyn (Scarlet Johanson) and Henry (Eric Bana). They connected emotionally.
I think another "cliche" one - but we all love it, is Scarlet and Rhett. How can you not love those two?
The next two - aren't love scenes, but in The Mask of Zorro - when Catherine Zeta Jones and Antonio Banderas dance, and then in Mansfield Park, when Fanny and Edmund have scenes together as adults - first in the carriage, then at the end, when Edmund realizes what a dolt he was. The latter are simply very sweet, poignant scenes.
Aliquis, I haven't seen The
Aliquis, I haven't seen The Other Boleyn Girl yet, but I can't imagine Eric Bana doing a bad love scene...he's completely yummy. And having watched both Zorro and Mansfield Park several times, I have to agree with you on those scenes; they're great. And yes...the eternally romantic Scarlett and Rhett. I visited the Margaret Mitchell house in Atlanta two years ago and purchased a poster of Rhett and Scarlett that hangs in my sunroom as inspiration!
OOOOoooo
Karen - that sounds fabulous! And did you know there's this hotel/B&B someplace in PA that's called "Tara" and I think is a reproduction of the building in [the movie] GWtW? I've never been but my high school music theory teacher told us about it.
I've only been seeing action/comic book movies recently - Wanted and Dark Knight I absolutely loved the latter. Not a real love scene, but it was really sweet, the scenes with Rachel and Harvey.
Oh right
Duh - Diana Lane gets good love scenes/super hot guys - Raoul Bova in Under the Tuscan Sun... Oliver Martines in Unfaithful... [well and Richard Gere too].
Of course those don't have happy endings...
Viggo
You're right; didn't she also get Viggo Mortensen in a flick about Woodstock??
You know...
I'm pretty sure she did, Karen. Diane Lane is one lucky lady.
Speaking of Viggo - in Eastern promises, when he says goodbye to Anna. [That was a dark movie - and nothing really happened between the hero and heroine... but it was full of could/should have beens].
Umm how about Gerald Butler
Umm how about Gerald Butler having sex with Vitamin C on the ceiling in Dracula 2000? :P hehe not exactly romantic, but when I think of him that's what I think of. I can't think of any other, I'm not really a romance movie fan lol My movie collection is full of zombies, Adam Sandler, and gore.
Ashley
Um, yep, that was a pretty
Um, yep, that was a pretty hot scene! And I hear you on the zombie-thing; I'm a huge fan of zombie movies, LOL! I recently watched Diary of the Dead, which started out slow, but quickly picked up the pace. I loved it, and not just because one of the zombie survivors (played by the uber-cute Canadian actor, Shawn Roberts) was so hot!
I love, love, love zombies.
I love, love, love zombies. One of my prized possessions is the ultimate edition of dawn of the dead signed by romero, and a copy of the original screenplay.
Ashley
Oh, lucky you! I love
Oh, lucky you! I love zombies, too.
My favorite movie is Forever
My favorite movie is Forever Young - an old Mel Gibson movie (before he went all wacky) that makes me laugh and cry every time. But my favorite kiss in a movie is Richard Gere in First Knight - I could watch it over and over lol.
Oh, I loved First Knight! I
Oh, I loved First Knight! I don't remember the first kiss, only that she said she'd never kiss him again. I do, however, remember the dramatic rescue scenes. That's one movie I need to watch again!

I love the movie the Illusionist you have to watch until the very end. I love Ghost with the pottery wheel.
Ooooh, I've heard good
Ooooh, I've heard good things about the Illusionist; writing it down for my TBW (to be watched) pile. Thanks, Beth!! And yes, I love that scene with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, too.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had some steamy scenes in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The scenes aren't that graphic, but the chemistry between them is amazing.
Jane, I agree...although I
Jane, I agree...although I loved the scenes with the two of them at the shrink's office, LOL!
Mine
Sex on the stairs with Pierce Brosnan in the Thomas Crowne Affair -- it doesn't get better than that.
The first season kisses between Logan and Veronica on Veronica Mars.
I know I could think of others, I love love scenes, but these are the first two coming to mind... my brain is deep in editing at the moment... :)
This book looks amazing and I can't wait to read it!
Sam
Thanks, Sam! You hit on my
Thanks, Sam! You hit on my husband's #1 favorite sexy movie of all time: the Thomas Crowne Affair. He loves Renee Russo in that flick! I've never seen any episodes of Veronica Mars, so will need to check that out as well...maybe rent the first season on DVD?
Woo!
Well, as sexy as RR is, she wasn't the main attraction for me, LOL. PB in white sheets, yum.
Yes, the first season of Veronica Mars is the best -- absolutely the best. The next two are okay, the second is good, the third is kind of a flop except for devoted fans such as moi. ;) But the chemistry between Veronica and Logan is hard to beat (he's the guy who played Josef on Moonlight, and I know you like him too) -- and while it's a teeny spoiler, I have to admit, the writers in that first and second seasons do one of the best bad guy to hero turnarounds I've ever seen...not an easy feat to take a guy who's basically a real asshole and make him the romantic hero -- and make it work!
Sam
It's only love?
The love (sex) scenes in Unfaithful between Diane Lane and sexy Olivier Martinez are scorching hot. Not exactly a "romantic" movie, though. :)
OMG, yes!!! Are those scenes
OMG, yes!!! Are those scenes totally amazing, or what? And Diane Lane during the train ride home, when she's by turns horrified and amazed as she remembers what they did, smiling secretly as the train chugs along. Excellent movie.
Glad to be back!
Hi, Karen - I'm in for this one! My favorite in recent memory doesn't even involve sex (I hope this counts...) but it's the scene in The Jane Austen Book Club when the dog breeder has been haranguing the younger man (played fabulously by Hugh Dancy, BTW). He picks her up in a car that runs on donut grease and the car dies and she just snipes and nags all the way to the party. She sits down in a huff and when the dancing starts, he stands, comes behind her chair, simply holds out his hand and gives her a look. It's a look that says, "Enough. Dance with me and eventually we'll work out all this latent stress of yours." He's taking charge (despite his age) and she knows it. Fabulous.
Okay, I'm writing this one
Okay, I'm writing this one down for the TBW pile, as well. I know this movie got some great reviews, so can't wait to watch it! And I don't think a romantic scene has to involve sex. Sometimes a look is enough. I loved the series Moonlight. The looks that passed between Mick St. John (the vampire) and Beth (the reporter) were so hot; totally ramped up the sexual tension without so much as a touch.
My favorite movie is From
My favorite movie is From Here To Eternity.
Estella, I'm embarrassed to
Estella, I'm embarrassed to admit I have never seen this movie. Does it contain the famous scene of two lovers rolling in the surf and kissing? I think I need to add this to my TBW pile, too. That's three movies so far (I think) that I can look forward to watching...
Yes, that scene is in From
Yes, that scene is in From Here To Eternity.
Love Scene
Pretty Woman is my favorite movie. My family teases me about watching it on T.V. when I OWN it. I don't care. If it's on, I watch it. Both the scenes mentioned above are favorites, but since they were already taken, I'll go with the scene between Rose and Jack in Titanic. Oodles of sweat, a hand on the window, and the added fear that they were going to get caught ANY second... What more could you ask for? Can't wait to read your new book Karen!

Hi, Marie!! It's so great to see you here! Oh my, yes...that scene from Titanic was hot. Even though it doesn't really show anything explicit, I still fast-forward through that scene if the kids are in the room, LOL!

i do love the notebook and the wet kiss. so hot and sweet.
i did like 91/2 weeks, so hot. ahhh
The Notebook is one of my
The Notebook is one of my daughter's favorite movies, but the ending always makes us cry!
My fave
My fave is Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves when he saves Maid Marian and kills the Sheriff. They cling to each other and realize how much they care for each other.

I just watched Hope Floats
I just watched Hope Floats last night and love the feelings he has for her and his determination to win her over.
I loved Goose and his wife in Top Gun and the love they shared.
Robin Hood
I love this movie, and not just for the shot of Robin Hood's bare backside, LOL! I love the scene where he's attacked by Maid Marian in full armor!
Movies
The first thought that comes to mind are the scenes between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind.
Hi Maureen, yes that's such
Hi Maureen, yes that's such a classic flick! When we visited the Margaret Mitchell house in Atlanta, we got totally sucked into watching the movie, which they continually show. It had been several years since I'd seen it; I'd forgotten how fabulous that movie is!
Movies
It is hard to pick just one movie. I have always loved Dirty Dancing and Pretty Women both have good love scene and we just can't forget to old ones like Gone With The Wind. Loved the book and the movie.
Pretty much anything with
Pretty much anything with Patrick Swayze has my vote! Dirty Dancing was great!
Congrats on the upcoming
Congrats on the upcoming release, its going to be great!!
I mostly watch movies, if I do, those that are historical settings. Just that I think partly because I love reading them but too seeing that time period it be regency, western, etc. One of my favorites is THE OUTSIDER (not the teen movie) but this one is based on Penelope Williamson's book. Tim Daly is in this one, a loner living on the land, and Naomi Watts play the lead characters. You can feel the tension as it builds up through the movie. Its one that was done and gives the book such respect. There are some beautiful scenes in this one! So you know the right one, its on DVD, here's a link for it :) I really think you'll love this one! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289374/
Oooh (rubbing hands
Oooh (rubbing hands gleefully), thank you!!! I will definitely pick this up; it sounds exactly like me kind of movie!!
Men I'd Like More Of
Mm. Gerald Butler from 300 to P.S. I Love You. He's got that raw stuff that I like in Clive Owen. I'd like to see more of both men in more movies.

Mmmm....
Hi Cait!! Yes...when I was looking for a hero for my next book, I knew wanted a guy who was just pure, unadulterated male. I was leaning toward Russell Crowe and Clive Owen and then rewatched Attila and knew he was my guy! Oh, to have both Clive and Gerry in the same flick! Heaven...
My 14-year old daughter is excited about the prospect of seeing both Gerard Butler and Steven Strait in the same move. I think it's called Priest, about a vampire-hunting priest (Butler) and a sheriff (Strait) who join forces to find Butler's niece, who has been kidnapped by vampire.
