I Need a Vacation...

Karen Foley's picture

...to recover from my vacation!

But instead, I'll do a contest for a beautiful pair of earrings and a Creativity candle, from Salem, MA!

Honestly, I can't complain too much. I just spent two wonderful weeks with my family and feel as if I've really reconnected with my kids. Two weeks, however, was perfect. I was ready to go back to work, just to get some much needed rest!

acadia1.jpgWe spent the first week in Bar Harbor, Maine at the KOA campground. We borrowed my father-in-law's 25-foot camper and (mostly) had all the amenities of home. The three girls slept in a tent beside the camper, and all in all it was very cozy and comfortable. Until the night we got a monsoon and the camper sprang a leak--directly over our heads in the sleeping section! But during the day...ah, bliss. We explored Acadia National Park, visited lighthouses and rocky shores, discovered hermit-crabs in Seal Harbor, ate ice-cream in Bar Harbor, and cruised through Frenchman's Bay aboard a 120' schooner.

rockport1.jpgWhen we arrived home, we unpacked all our gear, cleaned and returned the camper, restocked the house with food, did laundry, etc. The next day, my sister and her new husband arrived from Florida. My husband returned to work, and I assumed the duty of tour-guide. On the first day we visited Rockport, a quaint seaside community of restaurants, shops, boutiques, and lobster pounds.

jewelry.jpgOn the second day, we visited Newburyport, another upscale harborside town, as it celebrated its annual summer festival. We browsed a fabulous craft fair and I spent way too much money on some gorgeous, handmade jewelry. In fact, I purchased so much, that I'm going to give away a pair of stunning, fuzed-glass earrings to one person who comments here today (but you have to be registered to win).

salem1.jpgLast Thursday, we visited Salem, MA, home of the 1692 witch trials, and toured the House of Seven Gables. Initially, I wasn't all that enthused about going through the house, but am so glad I did! Beautifully situated overlooking Salem Harbor, the grounds boast beautiful flower gardens, and the house itself is amazing. There are secret staircases and passageways, intricate little closets and cupboards, and the house has a fascinating history. We also visited all the witchery shops, and I purchased candles and crystals to help boost my writing energy. I'll include a creativity candle with the earrings.

antique-shop.jpgMy new brother-in-law had never visited New England before, and was fascinated by the abundance of antique shops. So one afternoon, we drove along the coast and hit every antique shop we saw (there are dozens). He bought a few things, but I was the one who really had a hard time resisting the flukes and finds in these dusty shops. At one shop, I purchased over three hundred gorgeous lampwork glass beads for a song. I can't wait to begin turning these beauties into bracelets and necklaces!

On Friday, my parents hosted a traditional downeast lobster and clam bake with all the fixings, and my younger sister traveled out to join us, with her husband and three kids, so it was a big, noisy, fun group. But I'll admit it...although I have a newfound appreciation for all the wonderful things there are to do and see in New England, I am exhausted and my creative energy feels sapped.

What's your idea of a relaxing vacation? Do you do the mile-a-minute tourist thing, or would you prefer to stay put and just chill?

Let me know, and I'll pick a winner for a lovely pair of earrings and a scented candle!

Sounds like a lovely time!

Sounds like a lovely time! I like all sorts of vacations. Doing the same thing each time can get a little old. I love to go backpacking and camping (haven't tried this with the wee one yet). I love a driving trip where you try to hit everything you possibly can plus a few. :-). I love to take a few days to do nothing but sip chai, read and do puzzles, or just hang out with family. But I don't like any of it all the time. Maybe you could say I want it all....one at a time?

Cathy, I know exactly what

Cathy, I know exactly what you mean! I did have one down-day, when I told my sister that she was on her own. I just needed to be home, doing nothing. I sat in my sunroom and wrote about 14 pages of my next book, and even though the time flew by, I really felt like I'd had a chance to rest and recharge.

That's great that you got

That's great that you got that day, Karen. It makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Sometimes it is the simplest things that have the biggest effect!

Sounds like you had a great

Sounds like you had a great time!
I prefer to stay home and kick back with a good book or ten.

I love spending time with

I love spending time with family and friends, although it's nice to mix it up a bit--I like sight-seeing and activities, but it's great to have time to just chill, too. We just spent a week in Pennsylvania with friends, and it was fun to see the sights with them, but I also completely appreciated the down days where we had a chance to just chat and hang out at their home with their kids. And really, at the end of the day, I'm not sure many vacations are truly relaxing--they all involve some planning and coordinating, and unless you've got a laundry service, when you get home, there's still laundry to do ;)

Glad you got such a great couple weeks in, Karen!

Vacation

Glad to hear you had a wonderful time. I would have enjoyed browsing those antique shops. I like doing the tourist thing especially visiting museums and seeing the sights. I also love shopping for trinkets and souvenirs.

Wow! What a trip!

LOL, I feel bad now for joking that hubby and I consider going to Target without the kids to be a great escape!!

Hope you recover nicely!
Dee

What a great vacation

It sounds like you had a really great vacation. Campers are the best way to go, except when they leak.I'm glad you had a good time.

Since I live in the mountains, I tend to want to relax at the beach on my vacations. I think there is nothing better than bonfires on the beach at night, while sitting on a beach blanket, watching the night time surf. You can't beat, eating fresh caught seafood, at a beachside restaurant. Seafood always seems to taste better there, especially when someone else is cooking it for you. Of course watching all those hard bodies walk by, in their speedo's, can be very entertaining at times.(Ok, I have to admit, that one is more exciting, than relaxing).

I love everything about the beach, and you couldn't give me a better gift, than a week of total relaxation, at a shorefront bungalow. I'd be in Heaven.

Nice vacation

Hi Karen. Your trip sounds wonderful. I like to have a relaxing vacation. Do some of the tourist stuff and then relax in the hot tub or pool.

Vacations

Your vacation sounds like a lot of fun but I know they can be exhausting. I like some time to relax on a vacation but it always seems hard to find.
