Fun Stuff from Harlequin

Karen Foley's picture

Every year, Harlequin sends out their Harlequin Romance Report that, in addition to tidbits about the industry, also provides some fun information about the history of Harlequin. Did you know that the earliest readers of Harlequin published books were predominantly men? Or that Harlequin did not start out as a romance publisher?

In 2008, Harlequin sent out calendars, where each month featured a vintage romance cover. My daughter loved this calendar, and even has some of the pictures hanging in her room. vintage.jpg

Yesterday, I received a call from my brother-in-law, who saw a video on cnn.com about the history of Harlequin covers, and how they have evolved through the years. The video features an exhibit of Harlequin cover art from 1949-2009, called The Heart of a Woman. A study of these covers reveals how the artists captured the desires of women and how they have shifted over the decades. Early covers were aspirational, featuring heroines who were doctors or adventurers.

Today's covers focus more on the hero as the object of desire for the reader. To check out a mouthwatering example of what women desire, click on this link to see a quick video of Heart of a Woman. Do you recognize this guy?? I do!!

Harlequin also wants to hear about your quest for love, and what you've endured along the way, and over the coming months, will be posting hot tips, romantic trends, and advice from their romance experts. For more information and to participate in a fun survey, check out Fantasy Meets Reality.

Have fun!

Fun

I'm very excited about the anniversary events. :) I enjoyed answering the Fantasy or reality questions:

Thing I love most about hubby: That he accepts me as I am, but also inspires me to better.

Thing I would change about him: Absolutely nothing. He is who he is, and I love all of him.

Best date: with now hubby, first date walking around a lake path and stopping at every bench to smooch.

Worst: Internet guy I met and couldn't get away from fast enough -- I swear I just about opened the door and kicked him out of the car with the thing still moving at the airport, LOL.

If people fill this out, I'd love to hear other answers!

Wow, Sam! That's too funny. Did he stay with you, or could you at least boot him out to a hotel while he was visiting?

Ugh

He stayed with me, but on the sofa (want to be clear about that!) He drove me mad... it was just a few days, but I wanted to poke my eyes out with sharp things. He wasn't obnoxious or nasty or anything, he was just... well, not for me. In retrospect, I was probably hard on him, and when he emailed me a few years after, I apologized for probably being a completely nasty bitch, LOL, but honestly...he was a nice guy in some ways, but drove me nuts in a Felix/Oscar kind of way (I was Oscar). LOL

Sam

Always thought Oscar was the cool one myself...

Very fun, Sam!

Things I love about my guy: That even after all these years, he still makes me laugh until I cry. Every day. At least once.

Things I would change about my guy: I would make him take better care of himself. He's very physical, and sometimes he abuses his body with the things he tries to do. I want him to pamper himself a little bit (or let me do it more!).

Best Date: With my hubby, in high school. He picked me up and brought me to the beach with a blanket, a tote bag of sandwiches and drinks, and a kite. It was late September and the beach was empty and it was hands-down the best date ever.

Worst Date: A blind date set up by a coworker, where I agreed to meet this guy for drinks only, but then he complained that he was hungry and wanted dinner, too. He was arrogant and self-centered, and I sat and watched him eat, wishing he'd choke, and couldn't wait for the bill to arrive so I could leave.

I read Harlequins for so

I read Harlequins for so many years and I've actually collected a lot of the old ones because of the covers. Now I'm going to go through them. I've always meant to display them--maybe this summer is the time.

Favorite thing about my husband: We're closer now than when we married. He took it upon himself to cook and clean so that I have time to write.

Thing I would change: I would like him to enjoy the same TV shows I do. We share a lot of favorties, but he will not watch anything like Star Trek, which I love.

Best Date: My husband and I barely knew each other, but were in the same Sedimentology class. We were both working late on a lab and he asked me out to coffee. That was when we began to suspect that maybe we had more in common than we first thought.

Worst Date: After a first date that I could not WAIT to end(!) because it was so horrible, the guy hung his car off the edge of a steep embankment while taking me home. We had to walk to my house in the snow. It was late, so he slept in the basement. Fast forward years later, 600 miles away. I had a kid in my class that was driving me crazy. It eventually occured to me that he had the same name as bad date guy. I asked some cagey yet pertinent questions and yes. He was bad date guy's son. I kept my mouth shut about ever knowing his dad, for fear the guy might be single again.

Wow!

Jeannie, what a small world!! Sounds like bad date guy passed along the bad date guy gene!

My husband and I tend to like the same shows, with the exception of all the political talk shows he loves to watch. To me, they all sound the same...blah-blah-blah-blah.

Oh Wow!

I love learning new tidbits like that! I definitely did not know Harlequin's majority/target audience was initially men. How interesting that everything has shifted - and the covers! really love all the vintage stuff Harlequin is doing now :) I heard there were some great things at the Book Expo too.

Well...the reason I'm

Well...the reason I'm showing it here is because the image that they exhibit as THE OBJECT OF DESIRE just happens to be the cover from my first book, FLYBOY. I thought that was pretty cool.

Very cool indeed :)

You know, now I feel guilty -- I have to confess, I didn't look at the cover thing because I have seen so many of these vintage covers lately, I didn't bother, but now I will since I know you are there!!! :)

WTG, Karen, and really, that cover was all about Objects of Desire! LOL

Sam

I watched!

That was really so interesting... I'm forwarding it to friends. :) I can see why Karen is tickled. :)

Sam

Very cool!

Thanks for letting us know, Karen! I knew about Harlequin's celebration in general, but didn't know the specifics! How interesting how they've changed as a publisher and how their audience has evolved over the years! Must go check out the survey... (loved your answers, Sam!) ;)
