I might get hate mail for admitting this, but I don’t watch reality TV. To me, it’s not any more “real” than a sit com. I believe the shows are scripted and, even if they’re not, I just don’t want to watch real life in all its gory detail. Give me fantasy anytime.

Even though a romance novel delivers on fantasy—a tall, handsome man who ends up falling in love with, and making a commitment to a strong, independent woman—the truth is that most romance novels today, even Historicals, can contain a lot of realism. The heroines of today’s romance novels hold down real jobs, (whether that be Air Force pilot or concubine) face real life problems, deal with real relationships in their families and friends, and sometimes have to make real-life hard choices.

37513382.jpg The difference is I know these characters will resolve their problems by the end of the book. That doesn’t mean they’ll have perfect lives. To me fantasy doesn’t mean perfect. How boring would that be? But it does mean I believe in their basic goodness and their ability to love each other through the bad times, to work together to solve problems. Not to turn on each other in petty squabbles and outright betrayals. Why would I want to watch a group of people be pitted against each other to see who votes who off an island? Or get into nasty fights and call each other names just so they can “win” the apprenticeship or modeling or singing contract? Where is the honor? Where is the love for our fellow man in that?

I guess the fantasy for me is that I like to think of myself and my life as being about love. As helping make the world better by raising up my neighbors, not dragging them down. Does this mean I live in a fantasy? Maybe so. But if that’s the case, I don’t want reality.

So, what about you? Am I being naïve? Misguided? Burying my head in the sand? Do you watch reality TV?

*I’ll be giving away a copy of my Harlequin Blaze LET IT RIDE to one lucky commenter today. Don’t forget you must be registered at Cigars to be eligible to win.

good morning!

The only reality TV I watch is The Real Housewives of Orange County. Survivor, The Apprentice, or the others are no interest to me whatsoever. So I don't think you're misguided or naive. TV, is like reading, just want to get away from 'real' life for a bit.

Welcome Jillian!

Hey! Welcome to a new Blaze babe and to Cigars. :) Love the cover, and can't wait to read it. :)

I don't watch a lot of reality TV, but I am a Survivor addict. I have to admit, in general I don't find it a particularly negative show, or I wouldn't watch it either. I also like the Amazing Race, though I find it harder to catch on the TiVo because the time is always being thrown off by sports. Grrr. LOL

But I tend to look at these two shows as people trying something new, an adventure, and seeing if they can do it -- I am always impressed with the housewife who can handle the physical challenges or the person who manages to win w/out ever really doing anything back-handed (like fireman Tom, who is probably everyone's favorite). I like seeing people do more than they think they are capable of. There are such interesting clashes of personality, and while Survivor has its low moments, in general I find it entertaining and engaging and I love rooting for my favorite. However, I have caught some of the other reality shows, especially the dating ones, and I find those ridiculous. I never understand why all of these pretty girls would want to compete over one guy -- what's so great about him? LOL

But I like your take on fantasy and romance... and it makes me even more interested to read your book!

Sam

Hi Sam! Thank you so much

Hi Sam! Thank you so much for having me as your guest today!
I can understand wanting to watch people having big adventures, that makes sense. I just don't like the shows where people treat each other so ugly and mean. Just not something I want to watch at all. But I like the Olympics, so maybe I'd like the Amazing Race.

Hi Jillian!

Hi Jillian. I have watched Survivor, The Amazing Race and American Idol, and The Next Food Network Star but they are not a must see for me. I do find it amazing that people will go to such lengths on some of the reality shows to win.

Hi Crystal, I love food, so

Hi Crystal,
I love food, so I'd probably like anything on the food network as long as the contestants weren't mean or conniving orbetrayed each other. Then again, if I watch any more TV than I already do, I won't get any writing done. :)

Hi Marcie, I can totally

Hi Marcie,

I can totally understand about wanting to escape reality for just a little while. I've never watched the OC Housewives show. So, what is it about Orange County Housewives that's fun for you? Do they lead priveledged lives? Is it the mansions? the cars? The clothes? The shopping? I can see how that would be fun.
THanks for posting!
Jillian

OC housewives

I think I like it because of its excessiveness and though they are super rich some of the things they go through are what regular class people go through (divorce, controlling parent). And what cracks me up - how catty these women can be! I like when they have the reunion shows too because they are more on the spot and you can see how nice one is compared to another's cattiness or jealousy.
There's a new one - Housewives of New Jersey that just started. I wasn't able to watch the NY one - too snobby for my taste. And couldn't get into Atlanta. For whatever reason the OC just caught me and reeled my in.

I'm a big Hell's Kitchen Fan

In that show, the host is the mean one, mostly because people make some dumb mistakes. (Burning another chef by putting a 500% pan where the cold pans are kept) Some folks are evil, but that never works in winning. The people tonight got to the finale by keeping their heads down and cooking well. Since I can't cook at all, though, I'm riveted. :)

Best of luck with your new book!
Dee

Hey Dee--have you ever

Hey Dee--have you ever watched Chef Ramsey on the BBC version of Kitchen Nightmares? He's a much different guy. Still gets impatient, but doesn't scream. I think people that only see the chef on Hell's Kitchen wouldn't get the entire picture of the guy.

Jeannie

Hi Dee, So, once someone

Hi Dee,
So, once someone makes the finale and then is ultimately chosen (or wins?) do they get their own cooking show? Or a famous restaurant gig or something?
My daughter wants to be a chef someday so maybe I should have her wacth this show...

Hi there

I don't watch any reality shows regularly but I do enjoy them occasionally even though they're "staged" if not actually scripted. The Amazing Race is fun to watch just because they go to really unusual locations that you'd never otherwise see, like secondary cities in Russian and China, and they do crazy "challenges" based on local activities like stacking logs or sand painting. In general people are pretty nice to each other, too :-)

I like watching people being people, I guess I'm always fascinated by what makes them tick, even if it's not necessarily positive. There don't seem to be so many of them anymore, but I enjoy home and garden makeover shows, too, especially when they're done by the neighbors. Cooperation, transformation, and a happy ending--kind of like a romance novel :-)

Congrats again on the new release!

I LOVE home makeover shows!

I LOVE home makeover shows! I'm an HGTV addict. I like Designed to Sell, and other Staging shows. The Kitchen renovation show and the Worst Bathroom shows... My house needs so much work and I love to get ideas from them.
So, do those qualify as reality shows? If, I'm in trouble. Um...I didn't mean to lie...

PS Hi Jen Lewis! How are

PS Hi Jen Lewis! How are you?

Hi Jillian--I love the title

Hi Jillian--I love the title of your book. Very evocative.

I do watch reality TV. In fact right now it's the only TV I watch-- my favorites are Project Runway, Top Chef, Hell's Kitchen (a bit campy and possibly scripted), So You Think You Can Dance (my absolute favorite), and The Next Food Network Star. I see a bit of food-oriented them in my TV watching, lol.

I am a fan of fantasy, too, but it's so cool to see people with talent working for a goal. I don't watch the dating/hook up reality shows or stuff like that, though. I got suckered into one a long time ago and ended up feeling like I'd wasted a whole bunch of time.

So good to have you here at Cigars, Jillian.

Jeannie

Thank you, Jeannie! Good to

Thank you, Jeannie! Good to be here.

My mother is a HUGE fan of both dancing shows. I get them mixed up, Dancing with Stars and You Think You Can Dance?
I did buy her tickets to go see them live when they came to Dallas though. I guess that was the NON-stars one. :)

I'm sure you're talking So

I'm sure you're talking So You Think You Can Dance. I went in Reno. It was a great show!

I don't watch anything on tv

I don't watch anything on tv but sports.
Give me a good book and I'm happy.

Estella, I'm with you. I

Estella, I'm with you. I have a few shows I like, but they can't compare to a good romance novel. Thank you for posting today!
Jillian

Hi

Hi Jillian,
I do watch reality TV, but not as much as I used to. Many reality shows are scripted, so I feel as if I'm watching a regular sitcom or drama. The last reality show I followed was Celebrity Rehab. It's entertaining to see celebrities acting all crazy, but it's also sad to see them struggling with addiction.

Yeah, I guess I get too

Yeah, I guess I get too involved and get really depressed. I watched an episode of --I think it was called iNTERVENTION not celebrity rehab, but real people whose family was trying to get them off drugs and it was so depressing. Maybe it's because I've got 2 teens at home that I already have enough REALITY in my life. :)

You know...

I'm not into reality tv either, Jillian. I think the editing they do, and rumors/stories of how the show's producers etc antagonize the people on the show/house to create more drama just... isn't right.
However, I admit to being glued to the tv once or twice during a "girls next door" marathon. I ... just... don't... I ... haha I don't get it! But I think for that show, or say, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" - you know they're playing to the camera, and they know it, and... well it's interesting.
However, I miss "old school" tv, good sit coms, and dramas, and when networks didn't kill shows and switch them out like, I'd say gum, but it feels like shows don't last even that long. I try to avoid the reality tv.

You're so right Aliquis. I

You're so right Aliquis. I was furious when they cancelled FIREFLY. And there've been several other shows--usually high quality ones--that I had just fallen in love with and then they cancelled them. And yet it seems these really idiotic shows run for years... I just thoughtof a show I watched and loved--on PBS. When Mystery Theater made a series out of Elisabeth George's Inspector Lindley mystery novels. The series was not near as good as the books, but it was good enough to watch.

reality tv?

Is there such a thing anymore? So much of is scripted that it is no where near reality. I was a major biggest loser fan and loved to see the finale and see who has changed their lives. But this last show the woman that won really lost too much weight IMO and looked sick. So i think they pushed the losig to win mentality a little too much there.
the only reality tv that i watch and that isnt about building alicances, or backstabbing is the seasons of "The next foodnetwork star" and if your daughter wants to be a chef thats a really good place to start. Nothing is over the top, except the food.
Food network is a good place for her to watch period, excellent cooking shows. They make it look fun, and IMO cooking should be fun. right
Like they say if you don't have fun doin it, stop!
good post, the book sounds killer.
jodylynn

Thanks, Jodi, I'll get her

Thanks, Jodi,
I'll get her to start wacthing some Food Network.
I just thought of one reality show I watched last year. Oprah's Biggest Giver or whatever it was called. I loved watching the way they changed people's lives. I hated when they kicked people off every week, but it was worth it to see people getting the help they need.

Hi!

We do watch some--the whole family enjoyed this past season of The Amazing Race, and my daughter and I are entranced (mostly) by Dancing With the Stars (does that really count as reality TV? I tend to completely discount anything that has "stars" in the title!) We did used to watch Iron Chef, but not much else lately...

And no, I don't think you're naive or misguided--I agree that you should spend your entertainment time on stuff you enjoy and in general that lifts your spirits!

Congrats on Let it Ride--hot cover!

Thank you, Fedora! The one

Thank you, Fedora!
The one good thing about Dancing with the Stars for me was that my mother finally saw what I'd seen a long time ago--Ty Murry is a cutie patootie! My first book , my hero was a champion Bull rider and I based a lot of his character on Ty. He's a great guy and lives not too far from me on a big ranch in Stephenville, TX.

Yep!

Ty sure was our favorite--not the most natural dance talent, but what an amazingly positive attitude and hard working! He's practically a neighbor of yours! Have you met him??

Nope, not much TV for me!

Hi Jillian!
Nope, I don't watch any Reality TV, nor much TV in general at all! I hate to jump in the middle of a show and not know what happened from the beginning. I'm not good at remembering to watch a show! Even when I watched Moonlight last year, I recorded it so I watched it when I remembered! I guess like with books, we can pick up anytime to watch but with these reality shows you need to watch when they are on cuz the word spreads with the spoilers right away! I guess I too have my head in the sand (with a book too) LOL

A joy to meet you!

OMG, I'm just like that,

OMG, I'm just like that, Caffey. I will not start a show unless I watch the first episode. Luckily, I have a DVR and have gotten spoiled to it. I never watch anything in real time anymore, but record things and watch them when I have time. I haven't seen a commercial in so long, I get irritated when I go to my mom's and have to sit through one. Am I spoiled or what?
A joy to meet you too!

LOL Jillian, I think we are

LOL Jillian, I think we are twins :D
I have on shows on the DVR from last year still LOL
Hubby asks if he I watched yet, but no, LOL.

Caffey, I have a secret for

Caffey,
I have a secret for you. I had hours of shows/movies piling up on my DVR, taking up hours, so I got a DVD player that records onto blank DVDs and NOW I can record shows I want to watch later or watch again and again and then delete from the DVR and free up hours. I have to admit, I only did this after we had a horrible lightening storm and it blew out the DVR and I LOST a bunch of stuff I wanted to keep and hadn't wacth yet! Arrgh!
But no more!
Hope that helps,
HUgs,
Jillian

I love reality shows such as

I love reality shows such as Survivor, The Amazing Race but alas don't have as much time as I used to since I went back to work on nights.

You are not alone in liking AMAZING RACE according to everyone commenting here, so maybe I should check it out. I'm sorry you're having to miss your shows working nights now. Anyway you can record them and watch later?

This is so awesome ! I

This is so awesome ! I thought I was the only one that *whisper* don't watch reality tv. I DO NOT LIKE IT ! I agree with you Jillian, I also don't like to watch real life in all its gory detail. I want to relax, these shows don't relax me, they drive me insane. Rather give me a romance to read, thank you :)

Hi Petrolee! Thank goodness
