Wreck the Halls With Cows On Harleys
As I begin seasonal preparations, I have come to the conclusion that my house is a wreck. And I don’t even have kids to blame. There was a time when it wasn’t a wreck, but I think that was before we moved in. Right now we are in the process of transforming my daughter’s old bedroom into the computer room. We’ve already transformed my son’s room into my husband’s secret lair. So that meant a lot of stuff had to be displaced. But that doesn’t explain the piles of mail on the kitchen table, does it?
It all comes down to a time crunch, which I know we all feel. Not enough hours in the day, etc. I’m to the point now that in order to catch up on the dusting, which is, of course, impossible in a desert, I’m doing one piece of furniture a day as I’m brushing my teeth, curling my hair, etc, in the morning before work. At night I’m trying to sort through one stack of displaced stuff and figure out whether to keep, toss or donate. I really should have one extra box called “Will Need This As Soon As You Get Rid Of It.” It seems that I rarely need the stuff I keep, but every now and then I need something that I tossed. I honestly believe we could get rid of the sextant, though, and never miss it. My husband begs to differ. We also disagree on the WC Fields ceramic lamp. Everyone needs a ceramic drunk with a shade on his head, right? It saves time at parties if someone is wearing the lampshade before the drinking begins.
This sorting program of mine feels a lot like that guy who kept rolling the big round stone up the never ending hill in Greek mythology. No matter what I do, there’s something to sort. A decision to be made. Will I really transform these game boards into cool end tables? Do I really need seventeen boxes of fabric. (No brainer there. Yes, I do.) Does my husband really need four hard hats? I only have one hard hat. So handy when we do construction or log.
Anyway, the sorting will continue, because my goal is to once again be master of my domain by the time the kids come home for Christmas. Of course, they no longer have bedrooms, but we’ll figure something out.
So, how are your Holiday prep plans going? Are you sorting? Or are you baking and decorating? I’m saving that for next year.

my mail
my mail always seems to land on the kitchen/dining room table. I have a ceramic tree so it says up year round. Icould put a string of lights outside on the balcony cause my dad rigged it so a power cord could go out there but then I'd need to crawl under my desk to plug them in and our(sounds like too much of a pain so may forgo this year). This apartment is small so not a lot of room to store decorations the rest of the year, so only have a few that get put out.
I always run into Things I need as soon as they are gone. Ah so the sextant and the ceramic lamp go into another pile you need to create. The I'm keeping but not sure why pile. heehee another thing when I was younger I was a clothes slut. And because I cloths shopping was a weekly activity I bought a lot at discount stores. Every so often I would go through my closet and donate cloths. With all these cloths going back and forth, makes me wonder how many times I bought my own cloths back. LOL
This year
Although we celebrate Chanukkah which is much more laid-back than Christmas, even with 8 nights, I find myself getting caught up in the more, now, more, NOW routine.
So this year, before Thanksgiving I set myself a goal for the rest of the year.
I've determined to finish all those series I started reading earlier in the year. While I love series, I find I can't read more than two before I have to move on to something else for awhile.
So far, I've finished 2 of Dee's Midnight series (I've asked for book 3 for Chanukkah). I finished an old Vicki Lewis Thompson Harlequin series. That one has taken me years because I only recently found book 3 of 4. Now I'm on book 3 of Kathryn Smith's vamp series (Brotherhood of the Blood? I'm so bad with names). Oh, and I also finished Ready, Willing, and Able by Lucy Monroe.
Yeah, it's tough but I'm just buckling down and getting it done! ;)
ani
Ah Ani...
God Bless ya! Make sure you get lots of latkes to keep up your strength!! LOL!
Decorations
I have the decorations out, but I won't be putting them up until the weekend.
I am as ready as I am going
I am as ready as I am going to get for Christmas.
Aiya...
Still sorting, although the tree is up. (Only the lights on the bottom half of the tree work, and I'm not pulling the other string off to figure out what's wrong--they worked before we put them on, and I'm sticking with that! ;)) Good for you for getting all this stuff reorganized, Jeannie! And what I really need is a big internal reminder that goes off every few seconds saying, "You really won't need that--you haven't looked at/worn/touched/used that in a gazillion years AND won't ever! Promise!"
Lights
The lights working before I put them on the tree and then not working when on tree was the main reason I went to ceramic. That and tress shed whether real or artificial
Hmmm
Well I've bought most the presents - so that's something, right? Otherwise, no, no real Christmas decorations yet :X
And the tree will have to wait for another week or so to go up... Erm, and food will wait for closer to Christmas, but I'm excited! Well I'm also dog sitting for nearly a month - so that'll be new and exciting as well. Especially since ... :X I'm allergic to dogs (but I love them so!) And, this is a pure bred champion show dog... that weighs 110 lbs. :P I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully it goes well because I'm pretty sure the dog's life is worth more than mine ;)
Nothing
I am actually doing nothing to get ready for Christmas but that's because I live alone and don't have any reason to clean or decorate because I go to my older brother's house for several days before, during and after Christmas.
However I know exactly what you mean about trying to sort things out. I had to sort out everything when my Mom passes away and so much of it went in a box in my storage shed because I couldn't make up my mind what to do with it and neither could my brothers.
It so great hearing about
It's so great to read about all of your Christmas and Chanukkah preps. And I love the idea of the I'm Saving It But Don't Know Why pile, Christa. Thank you all for replying! I hope the rest of the prepping season goes well for everyone. And check in on Thursday for my reader appreciation give away.
You are way ahead of me.
You are way ahead of me. I haven't even attempted to clean (::cringes:: I'm a slob, I admit it.) And I'm reluctant to put out my Christmas decorations when my place is such a mess; it just seems wrong. Instead, I have my Halloween decorations in boxes and bags on the floor, my Thanksgiving decorations still scattered around the apartment... I'm hopeless I assure you. =)
And baking? Not a chance! I am one of the very least domestic people I know (if you hadn't already guessed. ;p ).
But best wishes on everyone else's holiday season prep...
And the game boards transformed into cool end tables sounds great. If you do can you supply pics?
Okay, Silverfire--I'm
Okay, Silverfire--I'm keeping the gameboards and will attempt the end tables. And yes, I'll definitely provide pictures. Uh...my Thanksgiving stuff is still in a box in my kitchen. I will bet getting that downstairs soon. :)
