Resolution Contest--March Check In
Okay folks, we are one fourth of the way through the year. Can you believe it? I am checking in again to see how we're doing with our goals and resolutions and I've decided to stick to the month to month goals because they are so much easier to manage. For those just tuning in, here’s the deal. Post your goals or update us on your progress four times during the year and I’ll put you in a drawing to win a Barnes and Noble canvas tote filled with good stuff. Post more than four times and I’ll put your name in the drawing twice. The drawing will be on January 2, 2010.
I recently checked back on my goals for January and February and found that I’ve made some headway in some areas and spun my wheels in others.
I am most thrilled to announce progress on the renegade basement. I bought shelving units at Costco. Gary and I hauled them into the house with a great deal of difficulty. After getting both boxes into the basement we read the labels and discovered the source of our difficulty—the boxes each weighed 200 lbs. Yes, that does slow one down. I’m rather impressed that we got them out of the truck and into the house. Anyway, with the shelving units and the nifty bin organizer I recently purchased, but have yet to put together, I plan on taming the basement.
As an aside, my husband, silly man, actually thought that I was going to move storage boxes out of the garage and into the basement to put on the shelves. Oh yes. I want to bring stuff back into the basement *chortle*.
As to my March goals, I failed miserably on my first draft, however I started three more books. I did not put my winter clothes away because winter came back, I did lose a few pounds and I stayed off ebay until payday. Woo hoo.
For April, my goal is to make more headway in the basement. That’s it. One goal. Oh—I may also kill the weeds. We’ll see how I do in the basement.
Any goals for April?

my progress
In January (thanks for the link) I said I would write 6 days a week - it ended up being 5; still working out; but I've failed miserably on the negativity part in March. So much bad stuff happened at work - it was hard to keep positive. Only thing that saved me was reading some really good books :)
For April, I'll pick one goal - write the synopsis for the draft I finished at the beginning of March (I did it backwards this time the story before the synop)and mail it. While waiting for that to be read, I'll write the synop for my next story idea and begin that one.
I'll work on the avoiding negativity, but I can't make any promises since I sit near someone who is the definition of negativity (where's the protective shield when you need one?)
Good luck with the taming of the basement!
Marcie--great April goal.
Marcie--great April goal. Let us know how that goes. Also, it is good to try not to be negative. When my husband and I are having bad days at school, we reinforce each other's negativity and it drains energy. Good luck dealing with your negative workmate.
Jeannie, yay!! I am most
Jeannie, yay!! I am most impressed! You need to post a picture of your shelves and bins once you have everything in place and tidied. I did not post any goals, because my life is insane and I know I'd fail miserably at meeting them. On a good note, I have lost five pounds and since that's always one of my goals (whether I announce it or not), I'm very happy.
Congratulations on your hard work!!
Karen--congratulations on
Karen--congratulations on the five pounds! I will post photos once I tame the basement beast. :)
Hooray!
Good for you, Jeannie! And yay for you, Karen! I didn't used to be a "would love to lose five pounds" person, but now I am. *sigh*
Made a little progress on my goals when I've had to sort through the piles my husband dumped onto the living room floor from the pantry (which had admittedly become impassable because of stuff I'd stashed there thinking I'd deal with it someday ;)) So, it's moving along slowly...
Way to go, Fedora! One
Way to go, Fedora! One small step at a time beats no steps at all--a lesson I'm trying to hammer into my head.
Well here's my update! As
Well here's my update!
As for my goals, let see. i am still writing, although not as much as i'd like. but that's a concentration and procrastination issue that i have. I like to play on the internet too much. but don't we all.
aI havent gained any weight or lost, but did get cortizone shots in my knees to make excercise alot easier. wow, those shots are pretty darn cool. Since im way to young for a knee preplacement, i have to lose weight and get the shots when needed.
So april goals.
Excercise and get some weight off, alot actually.
Writer my butt off.(Boy it would be nice if that worked huh!)
Finishh the blaze that im writing now, and send off the contest entries that i've targeted. after polishing and tweking then send that puppy off to harlequin, then wait!
happy resolutions everyone!
jody
Good luck, Jody!! I have to
Good luck, Jody!! I have to ask you...did the shots themselves hurt? My rheumatologist wants to give me cortisone shots in two of my fingers, since they're causing me so much pain, but so far I've resisted.
not too bad. the shot in the
not too bad. the shot in the worst knee didnt hurt at all. the other knee hurt, but was over quickly. and its nice to be able to go up stairs without pain. it's cool.
good luck with that.!
jody
Jody--good luck with the
Jody--good luck with the writing and weight loss! You're sounding positive, so I bet you achieve your goals.
I'm afraid of my basement...
...and my garage. And we've only lived here for three years. I think we'll have to move again soon : -)
My goal this month is to finish up to act III of my WIP, and to GIVE AWAY MORE BOOKS.
(At least I know I can achieve one of those...)
Good luck in your basement, Jeannie.
Thanks, Diana. I am trying
Thanks, Diana. I am trying to make my basement not a scary place. My garage is scary, but I'll deal with that later.
Good luck with the WIP.
Oh and Diana,
I love the book giveaway resolution.
sometimes....
...you just have to set the bar low :-)
setting bar low
I can do that :-). Like say getting dressed before noon most days cause rainy days like today I just feel like staying in pjs all day. besides getting dressed creates more laundry
Clothes
I've started taking out some of my t-shirts and capris, but I haven't stared boxing up my sweaters and coats yet. The weather is a little wacky, so I think I'll start putting away the winter stuff in about two weeks.
Hey Jane
This is the year of wacky weather. I was going to back away my winter clothes in January, since the temps were in the fifties, and now we're getting low thirties during the day in March. Yow.
My goal for April is the
My goal for April is the same as the previous months. To eat healthier and lose some weight. Eating healthier is hard, but I have lost 6 lbs.
Congratulations, Estella!
Congratulations, Estella! I'm still trying to hit the five pound mark. I lost four, gained two, lost them again. (Does that mean I've lost six?)
Oops!!!
My goal for March was to tackle the income tax stuff. Since I've not been home a lot I didn't get it done. I guess it will another late filing. I have been share driving with my husband on his new job.
I still haven't been to a used book store but it's killing me as I have been in a lot of places lately and read a few new to me authors whose backlist I would love to have.
I know I read more books than I bought.Yeah me! I have read some Blazes: Karen Foley's Able-Bodied, Samantha Hunter's Untouched and Tawny Weber's Double Dare etc.
Goal for April: Donate my hair if it's usable or get it cut.
Hi Kaelee
Taxes--oy. I hate doing them, thinking about them, paying them. Good luck with that.
Share driving--so you and your husband are on the road? That would be interesting. I hope you find a bookstore.
Let us know if you were able to donate your hair--such a wonderful thing to do.
Jeannie
I also read
I also read A cowboy's Redemption which I loved. I'm looking forward to your next book.
income tax
woohoo done. Mind you I only had 4 things. Income, rent, donation,PIN and Tuesday it all got mailed to BIL who efiles it
Making progress
I had a few goals for this year and some were for each month and some ongoing.
I'm doing good with going through all that we saved with papers over the years and shredding and saving the important stuff. We too got through my sons clothes and off to goodwill. So we had a good progress with organizing this house and getting rid of things we just didn't need. I wanted to get them out of here, but too to get to others who had a need for them.
With my health, its been so going, mostly because of insurance, to get to search out for more treatments/help for the growths/pain. But I did alot of research to find places that specialize in this so its one that is ongoing.
I had a few goals related to my reading and I'm doing good with reading more new to me authors, which I love to do. But one thing is my goal to finish/catch up on series kind of back fired on me because with starting new to me authors I also started new series, LOL. But one thing with this is that its so great to read more authors because I'm finally getting to read some that others spoke of and I can finally say 'yeah me too' and now I don't have to miss those reads!
Hi Caffey--I just got done
Hi Caffey--I just got done with the kids' stuff to goodwill over Christmas break. What a relief! Good luck with your search for treatments. Isn't it great to find a new author--to add to the old authors and then add to the TBR? ;)
well curbing
book buying isn't going well.
A friend of mine recently broke up with her common law husband. about 4 months ago they bought like $1000 worth of beef and when they were on the road they were able to get lots of fresh vegetables which we blanched and froze so she got half. We moved one freezer down here(they had 3)so with not having to buy meat I can get more healthier foods and we start eating healtier
How great that you can start
How great that you can start eating healthier! I'm so surprised how much it costs to eat mostly vegetables. Better luck with the book buying next month (although I'm a big fan of book buying.)
I love book buying too
I'd just like to get it down to double digit each month
Easy solution
Start writing. *G* Seriously, you start writing books, it pretty much cuts your reading time in half, or more.
So there you go! Problem solved. ;)
Sam
April
Since I don't think I did any of the things I thought about for March (in your end of Feb post), I think I will refrain from looking into April. That's okay -- stuff gets done, even if it's not the stuff I planned. I think that's okay, and sometimes it just feels day to day. I'm going to stick with that.
Karen, Jeannie, and everyone else, congrats! This is such a fun contest you have set up... :) I really like hearing what everyone is up to...
Sam
It's really helping me out,
It's really helping me out, Sam. I'm choosing my goals more carefully and realistically now, and I like going month to month. I love hearing everyone's progress and readjustments, too.

So far I have not lost a pound but I have started walking again. I am also down to only smoking about 3 cigaretts a day so I guess I am getting somewhere.
Leadbottom--Yay on both the
Leadbottom--Yay on both the reduced smoking and the walking! Keep it up. Smoking is so hard to stop. I watched my husband go through you know what before he managed to stop. Good luck.
Resolutions
One of my resolutions was to eat healthier and in March I really cut down on the amount of sugar that I eat. I try to read labels because I am amazed at some things that have sugar or high fructose corn syrup in them even though they advertise them as healthy. I am also exercising more so I think March was good for getting healthier.
yay for you on the basement;
yay for you on the basement; I also bought some more totes a couple of weeks back and plan on filling them with items for the garage sale that I am going to have to have(way too much collected). I'd give myself a B on this. LOL.
Excellent strategy, Maureen
Excellent strategy, Maureen (cutting back on sugar and reading labels.) Congratulations on a great March.
No pastry
Jeannie--good luck with the basement. I had mine all organized and then my children outgrew clothes and discarded toys and people gave me bizarre gifts and my husband ditched some office equipment and voila! Basement is a mess again. Maybe if I had shelves and some plastic bins...;-)
Sadly, I did not meet my March goal which was to find a place to buy good pastry and then eat some of it. Sigh.
I did lose several pounds. (I refuse to believe these two facts are related.) Actually, I don't believe I lost weight--I think my scale is broken. I will not be putting the broken scale in the basement anytime soon, though. I LIKE the broken scale a lot.
So I need a more attainable April goal. Pastry is off the table. How about Easter candy? Should my goal be to find and eat lots of high quality chocolate? No. Probably not. It's cheating if the goal is something I'm going to do no matter what, right?
All right. My goal is to get in touch with an old friend. I've been meaning to do this since December and have failed utterly.
Ellen--It is a scientific
Ellen--It is a scientific fact that excellent pastry and weight are not at all connected. Run of the mill pastry, on the other hand, has a devastating effect.
I think I, too, am going to try to reconnect with two high school friends this month. Thanks for the reminder.
Okay, so I didn't finish the book
That I had intended to finish by the end of February. But it's been quite a month, what with one thing and another, so that's my excuse! I am nearly done however. Will be done in the next day or two. Phew.
I've made great progress in my goal to be more green. I actually made my own laundry detergent out of Fels Naptha Soap (2/3 bar grated), Washing Soda (1/2 cup), and Borax (1/2 cup). I use one tbsp a load And it works great. It's also insanely cheap :-)
Jen

Hey Jen,
High five to another Fels Naptha girl! I've been using this stuff for years. It takes out stains I can't get out with other stuff (some stains, not others). I also use borax, so I guess I may as well add the washing soda. I've never used the Fels Naptha in my washer, but I knew I guy who would shave the bar into the washer with his jackknife back during college days.
Hope your next few writing days go smoothly, Jen.
Goals
I am bad; am not a goal type person.
I did start phys therapy yesterday to try to alleviate some leg pain due to back issues. It is a commitment of course, will see how it goes. LOL.
I'll be thinking good
I'll be thinking good thoughts for you, Pat. Hope you're able to alleviate the pain.
Pain
Thanks, Jeannie - the pain is certainly very tolerable; but thought I would give it a shot a p.t.
my progress
I'm new to this group goal sharing (missed Ja/Fe/Ma) but it seems like something that might make you follow through due to other people knowing about it so I'll post mine:
now that my first MS is finished *yay*, to complete my query polishing in first half of April, and start subbing by last week of the month
there, i've said it! I feel much better now.

Welcome, Maya!
Congrats on finishing your first manuscript. What do you write? Fill us in. :)
Thanks
I appreciate the kind words, Jeannie.
I write humorous women's fiction. The MS I just finished is a fish-out-of-water story set in home improvement television, and the one I'm halfway through is set in the alternative travel industry. I keep waiting for the characters to talk to me as I keep reading about from other writers!

Some characters talk, some
Some characters talk, some are mute. I have talkers right now, but a couple of books ago I had to fight to get what I wanted out of them. :) Your books sound quite interesting. Crossing my fingers for you on your submittal.
Checking in late
My March goals (as I recall) were to contact some old friends, do some sewing, to continue looking for a new job and to work out 10 mins a day.
I contacted a couple of old friends via email and it was very gratifying. I also sent a postcard and a notecard to other friends. In one case, it wasn't someone I'd been out of touch with but it still counts, right?
I did fix my comforter and hemmed the pants I got back in Dec. I haven't fixed the skirt yet because it's a winter skirt and in the back of the closet now.
I'm still looking for a new job. More on that in a minute.
I haven't lost anymore weight either BUT I didn't gain any while on vac!!
And I completely failed the 10 minutes worth of exercise a day. :-( HOWEVER, I did a week's vac at the end of March and walked every single day (all around San Francisco, into a cave, a shopping mall, etc) so I think that more than made up in time what it didn't make up in regularity.
April goals:
Find a new job. I know, I know, but I haven't gotten one yet so I'm perservering. In that vein, I signed up with an employment agency yesterday and plan to sign up with another next week.
I'm also brushing up on my typing and 10-key skills. I use both daily but not in any meaningful way. So I'm unsure what my wpm scores are.
I'm also taking better care of my health. I had a mini-meltdown just before vacation where I cried for 2 hours because I couldn't find a Tshirt I wanted. At that point, I realized I was more than just stressed out, I was bordering on depression.
I was supposed to see my doctor on Tuesday but she was delivering a baby. I go back next week and I might get a prescription just to help me over this hump.
And, maybe, I'll try that exercising for 10 mins a day because it's supposed to help with endorphins and all that.
