I forgot
It’s my blog day today and I plum forgot. (Or is that plumb forgot? I’ve never been certain.) I logged onto the website, hoping someone else had perhaps forgotten it wasn’t their day and posted a blog, but, rats, it was not to be. So I’m coming up with a topic here and now and that topic is…ta da…forgetting.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve forgotten?
I’m actually one of those never-late, crazy about deadline people , so forgetting something important gives me hives, or if not hives, at least a minor rash. I’m nutso responsible. So, when I forgot to go to a job interview when I was 20 and in college and desperately in need of another job (I had two other part time jobs, but needed a third to make ends meet) I endured one of the longest evenings of my life. I remembered the interview at exactly 5:35—five minutes after the place closed. I’d never done anything that stupid before. Not even the plan to sled down the steep hill and under the board fence, forgetting that there was a log directly beneath the fence that would severely impede my progress and cause my head to ram into the bottom board as I was launched into the air, qualified. At exactly 8:00 a.m. I was at the door of the office, begging forgiveness. They gave me another interview and, amazingly, I got the job. They loved me because I was so responsible.
I do a lot of minor forgetting though, and that doesn’t bother me. Holidays, oil changes, that kind of stuff. I was at Whole Foods over the weekend in the checkout line behind a lady who didn’t remember it was her birthday until she wrote the date on her check and thought it looked familiar. I usually remember my birthday, but I have forgotten my wedding anniversary—more than once. Fortunately, my husband forgets it, too, and we usually forget on the same years. On our tenth anniversary, my brother-in-law called to congratulate us and we had to ask him why he was sending good wishes.
So have you forgotten anything major? And if so, how did you fix things? Or did you bother?

I hate forgetting things!
And I usually don't... My DH says it is almost a sickness, the way I not only *can* and *do* remember things, but also the way I *expect* to.
The biggest thing I've forgotten? Well, I'm not sure. So, either I actually have forgotten or it just got filed away because it was so embarrassing and I haven't figured out how to retrieve it yet. :-)
Cathy
Hey Cathy,
Repressed memory is the best way to handle major bouts of forgetfulness.
I don't do it on purpose...
but every time I go somewhere, esp long trips, I forget one crucial thing. My last RWA...it was my toothbrush. Once, it was the custom suit for my husband in his brother's wedding. (That was an out of state thing, too) I'm manic about packing and all, even with my insane OCD, but no matter what, I always forget something.
With hubby's wedding, we had to buy new slacks and a vest for him and his twin so they'd match as groomsmen. That actually worked out well, because they got married in Vegas in summer and if they'd worn those heavy wool coats, I'm pretty sure they'd have died. Which doesn't excuse it, but it does soothe the ulcer, lol.
Too funny, Dee. And am I to
Too funny, Dee. And am I to understand that your husband is a twin and you guys had twins. Amazing.
Oh yup!
We got twins coming out of our ears now. My sister has a set, too. And then three of our cousins, I think. Friends say I knew what I was getting into, lol, but I sooooo didn't. :)
I may have shared this before but...
Years ago, The Child (almost 17) was 9 months old and we were flying to California to visit the grandparents that evening.
I had a tendency to always be late for work. Not much, a minute or two only.
Well, this morning, I was determined to be to work on time because I was leaving early.
I dropped That Boy (my eldest son) off at daycare and headed to work. At one point, I thought to myself, I shouldn't have taken this road. I should have gone the other way. Oh well.
I made great time! I was not only on time, but 10 minutes early!!
Then, just as I pulled into my parking spot, I heard a little cough. I glanced in the rearview mirror and there was The Child! I had forgotten to drop him off at his daycare (which is why I was on that road).
I had to turn around, take him to daycare and show up at work 30 minutes late. *sigh*
But, that was the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back and not only am I on time now but I'm early (unless it's to a dinner or party at a friend's when I'm always the prerequisite 10 minutes late).

That's a great story! My aunt and uncle did the classic drive off leaving one of their four children at a service station. They were miles down the road before they figured out they were missing one. He was still there--kind of torqued off, but there.

I don't forget major things very often.
Now, my grocery list is another story.

Lists--oy! Do you walk the aisles then, looking at everything, hoping to remember? Or are you one of those recall people who come home with just about everything?
Hey Jeannie
I forget little things, I think most of us do, but the largest thing I can think of in recent years was when we planned to go see my SIL and her husband about 7 years ago, and they had arranged some kayaking excursion, etc and other fun plans, and we completely forgot and I planned all of my research trip to VA for the same period, and we didn't realize it until that morning they called and asked us when we expected to be there, and we were like, um, uh... whoops. I couldn't cancel the research trip, it was for my masters, but they were understanding and haven't seemed to hold it against us, which we appreciated, of course.
Other than that, all kinds of little things, and I put my dog out last night to pee, and about fifteen minutes later Mike was like "why is she outside?" LOL I have NEVER forgotten to bring the dogs in, and while it was sort of funny, it certainly wouldn't have been if she'd gone around the front or gotten into the road -- that will never happen again. When I forget something like that, I tend not to do it twice b/c the possible consequences weigh in my mind. My excuse was a busy, long weekend with family, and we were all in the kitchen visiting and doing dishes, and I got distracted, but still...
I think my multi-tasking brain gets smaller each year... I am good at accomplishing tasks and finishing things, but usually only one at a time...
Sam
Hey Sam--
Good to see you! Be prepared, as the big 5-0 approaches, to have more of the multitasking shrinking brain. I keep lists now. It was really frustrating at first when I couldn't bring things up to the forefront of my brain instantly, but I'm getting used to it. I know it's there--I just have to sort through more files, lol.
Ah, forgetting...
I seem to do that often... the worst in recent memory was completely blowing off one of the kids' friend's birthday party. I remembered earlier in the week and even the day before, but for some reason on the day of, it completely fell out of my brain. I picked the kids up from school, ran a couple errands, and remembered that night after the kids were in bed and it was far too late to call the mom to apologize. Big oops! I apologized profusely when we saw each other a couple days later and thankfully she was kind enough to feign understanding ;) It was written down on the calendar, but I guess that only really works if you look at the calendar once in a while :)
Ah,Fedora. I feel for you.
Ah,Fedora. I feel for you. It's rough when kids are involved. And I have started making myself look at my calendar every morning, even though I know there's nothing important on it. Sometimes I am very surprised.
Blech
I'm constantly forgetting things. I have too much going on and live 19 hour days and well, it's been a long long long 2-3 weeks. Some very not bright people are asking me idiotic questions I can't answer, and getting unreasonably angry with me when I can't, even though I take time to explain to them why.
Unfortunately, I can't do much about forgetting things- just try to take care of them as soon as I can/remember. And hiding from the rest.
Aliquis
Sounds like a rotten few weeks. Hopefully things will ease up soon. I'd be lost without my list notebook and for some reason, I haven't lost it yet, so I've been doing pretty good of late.
