Choices, choices
Okay, here’s the scenario...you’re going to spend six weeks on a deserted island (that has a nice stockpile of food and a hut with a generator so you won't be opening coconuts with you teeth and sleeping out in the open, being eaten alive by mosquitoes--in fact, it's quite a comfortable deserted island.) You get to bring one book, one cd, one dvd collection, one celebrity. What, whom and why?
I’ll go first:
Book—The Complete Works of William Shakespeare—it’ll keep me busy and keep me thinking.
CD—Echoes by Pink Floyd Excellent music to simply experience and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet.
DVD—The Complete Perry Mason collection. I can’t get enough Perry Mason.
Celebrity—Chef Ramsey. I want someone to do the cooking and I think he’d be a lively companion.
Now how about you?

LOL
Friday on the desert island... do we get to bring husbands by default? ;)
Book: McKee's STORY or maybe Marks's Inside Story: The Power of the Transformational Arc, instead, since I haven't read it, but it looks very good.
CD: Jimmy Buffet's Greatest Hits
DVD Collection: Burn Notice
Celebrity: Joss Whedon -- if six weeks talking story and such with Whedon doesn't change your writing life, nothing will. ;)
Sorry, Sam, but if I get to
You're a good woman! Sorry, Sam, but if I get to take a celebrity of my choice to a deserted island, I am so not interested in talking, LOL!
Joss for six weeks would be
Joss for six weeks would be spectacular. You probably don't even need to bring the other stuff, lol.
In which Ellen is exposed as a rule bender
(Watch, I start out trying to follow the rules but by the end it's all gone to pot.)
Book: I'm not so happy about the one book restriction. Six weeks is a long time for one book. I think I'd bring Anna Karenina. I've read it before but probably not slowly enough. I imagine there is enough I missed to keep me thinking for 6 weeks.
CD: I'd make my own mix. I bet that's cheating, but what are you going to do? Take away my hut?
DVD Set: There's a $700 collection of United Artists movies--90 movies in all. I'd take that. (Is someone else paying?) If I have to take one that I own, I'll go with The O.C. Season 1. I haven't gotten tired of that one yet.
Celebrity: Diana Holquist, romance author. ;-) If Diana and I had 6 weeks on an island, we could outline about 6 books and write another 3-4. My career would be in great shape by the time I got home. Plus I know she doesn't snore.
---
I'm adding one thing to the original game: What's one "special feature" you'd add to the island?
On my island, calories are burned 6 times as fast with half the effort. This way if Chef Ramsey and Jeannie come to visit from their island, I won't have to feel guilty if I overindulge.
Ellen--I was seriously
Ellen--I was seriously considering taking away your hut, you started a trend and other people are making their own mixes. But, since you've made a calorie free island, you get your hut back plus an extra mosquito net. :)
I'll bring the m&m's!
Hey, cool! I get to come to your island!
You all know by now that I suck at this. Not only do I not watch movies or TV shows, but I don't own a single CD. Nope. Not one. My hubby got me an ipod years ago and I gave it to my son so it's full of songs like, "We are the Champions" by, you know, whoever sings that song....
So....
Book: First Lady by Susan Elizabeth Phillips--the world's most perfect romance novel, IMHO.
CD: er....
DVD: Okay, wait, I got one: The Sopranos. I did get into that many many years ago.
Celebrity: Since I"m already on Ellen's island, I'll bring SEP to plot with us. I'll get her really, really drunk and find out her evil secrets. I'm pretty sure there's a deal with the devil for her to get it so right every time...
When do I leave???
1. Book — The Stand by Stephen King; I love this book, and it will make me feel very fortunate to be on a deserted island where I am safe from killer super-viruses. Of course, I'll probably have terrible nightmares, but I have the perfect remedy for those, too...see Item 4.
2. CD - I don't have a favorite CD, but I love Nickelback, so I guess any CD by them would make me happy.
3. DVD—Lord of the Rings Trilogy - I could watch this a gazillion times and not get tired of it.
4. Celebrity - Josh Holloway. Um, have you seen this guy on LOST? Sweaty, muscular, and completely hot. Plus, he looks amazing striding out of the surf. He's the perfect deserted island playmate.
Josh Holloway--good choice!
Josh Holloway--good choice! Also, the Lord of the Rings would be a good watch.
My takes
Book - "Watership Down" I liked it as a kid and it's thick
CD - I'm going to be a rebel like Ellen and make my own
DVD - any season of CSI because it's my favorite show
Celebrity - this is a tough one. Janet Evanovich - maybe she'll share her cheez doodles. I met her once - she had polka dot socks on so she'd be cool to be stuck with.
Marcie--Watership Down is a
Marcie--Watership Down is a great book. It's hard to convince people to read it because of the rabbit factor--in fact, I didn't want to read it because of that--but what a fun read.
Oh gosh.
One book? Really? ... I think I'd be doing some crazy things to smuggle in another one. Heh. I'm going to "cheat" - It's not a book I own, but I know it exists. The complete works of Jane Austen. Including Sanditon and Lady Susan :P
One cd? I think I'd have to make my own mix. I have a serious case of music ADD. Even worse than my reading ADD.
DVD collection... I recently bought Pride and Prejudice - the BBC version... but I'm going to have to go with "Rome" the complete series - I watched it all in a very short period of time, and I'd watch it again. And with all the special features too :)
Celebrity? Great idea - I'm stealing from you, Jeannie. I'm bringing Tom Colicchio. I'm also going to assume there's going to be a great kitchen to go with the stockpile of food. :D
Fun! I'm loving everyone's answers :D (lol lol lol and I should read them before I make mine! I didn't even consider making my own cd was "bending the rules" - I guess we're just a rebellious bunch!)
Tom Colicchio is a great
Tom Colicchio is a great choice! He has presence, he looks like he knows how to have fun, and he can cook. Good one.
I love Island fantasies!
Book: The complete works of E.A. Poe. I'd like to read them all.
CD: I'm going to have to make my own too. I'm not loving any one artist at the moment.
DVD: The complete Twin Peaks
Celebrity: Josh Holloway was a damned fine answer Karen! I must concur.
Tan
A Josh Hollowat
A Josh Holloway concurrence...imagine that ;)
I just can't choose 1 but 1
I just can't choose 1 but 1 from the list below would be ok.
Book: Either my Riverside Chaucer (complete) but more likely my 6 book volume set of the complete poetic Old English records with a dictionary or the French Arthurian Vulgate cycle (thousands of pages and volumes)
CD Something by Bruce Cockburn or Gregorian Chant
DVD The complete series of TOUCH OF FROST or MI-5 or THE PALLISERS or Perry Mason
Celebrity: Geoffrey Chaucer. His ghost will do.
I agree on Perry Mason though! My husband and watched the whole series last year. Have you notivced the complete change in Della's character from season 1 to season 2? She went from spunky and a bit risque and fun to more matronly and "proper". Perry went from a bit of a devilish character (with a halo) to more proper too. Seeing it agian,. I think I liked the first season more before it got toned down.
I've watched all the
I've watched all the episodes over and over again. The first season was truer to the books. I also like Paul Drake when he was a little more devilish and a little less matronly (lol). So glad to meet another Perry fan!
Paul Drake
He was devilish, wasn't he? I love Della's response when he calls her "Beautiful". I guess today they would call that sexual harassment but she really knew how to keep him in his place while maintaining a sense of charm and power! I loved that. I have copies of lots of vintage Erle Stanley Gardner books with the cool covers like the ones I used to read when I was younger. :-) I'' have to read them again someday soon now that I am an adult and have seen the whole series recently. I read him writing as AA Fair last year. Merri
I've yet to read AA Fair,
I've yet to read AA Fair, but have always meant to. I have the vintage Erle Stanley Gardners, too. I love how he describes the driving--like we care when Perry slams in the clutch. Men and driving, lol.
I have the Riverside Chaucer
Read the entire thing in an undergrad course on, well, Chaucer... LOL
Sam
AA Fair/Chaucer
I liked the AA Fair book I read. It was definitely closer to the first season of Perry Mason and then some. I love these stories. They almost have a lot in common with romance, except almost the opposite, darker side of people trying to make it but making the wrong choices and the detetives who have to sort it all out.
The Riverside Chaucer -- Same book they use in grad school seminars too. I need to replace my copy some day. Whether it was the humid air from the flood in my apt. or the general humidity in NC compared to the dryness here in Colorado, I have found that in this dry climate, most of my NC books have a mustiness that bothers my asthma. That one is going to be expensive to replace as are most of my medieval books! Here the dryness can cause book spine glue to give away within a year so we run a humidifier a lot. I really like some of Chaucer's other works better than THE CANTERBURY TALES, particularly BOOK OF THE DUTCHESS. But the book is big and lots to read for a desert island...and heavy enough to use as a tool or a hard pillow if needed as well.
Merri
I'd probably go...
with my laptop to write on and my iTunes to write with. I wouldn't use anything else.
What, six weeks uninterrupted? Girl, I'd be all OVER that. If I were to bring a book, it'd be Nalini Singh's Caressed by Ice.
I know, I'm lame, lol,
Dee
Dee--Did you ever see that
Dee--Did you ever see that episode of Roseanne where she dreams she gets put in jail and she's happy because she gets to be alone for a while? Your post reminded me of that. We love our families, but can you imagine even a few days uninterrupted? Wow.
LOL!
I didn't see that one, but I'd probably relate. My day is broken up into "Work" "Writing" "Babies" "Bubba" "Cleaning" "Dinner" "Hubby" "Sleep". And that's a good day, lol.
I'll play!
Book: The Count of Monte Cristo(I fell in love with this book in high school).
CD: I'm with Ellen, my own mix
DVD-All available seasons of NCIS or MASH(post Trapper and Frank Burns)
Celebrity:I'd like to pick the brains of Karen Templeton or Robyn Carr. They seem to have the right mix of humor and homeyness(is that a word). Any way, when I grow up I want to write like 'em.
Yes, Robyn Carr is a lot of
Yes, Robyn Carr is a lot of fun; I had lunch with her last summer when the hotel at Nationals didn't have a room ready for me and she took pity on me. But I have to ask; am I the only one here who chose a boy toy for my celebrity companion?? Even Sam indicated her first choice would be her husband; I feel so trashy! :)
Hi Honey!
I certainly didn't pick a boy toy. (Waves at husband who's reading over her shoulder). No sir....not me...
Karen--A boy toy is totally
Karen--A boy toy is totally acceptable...maybe Chef Ramsey is my boy toy. Have you seen him with his shirt off? ;)
Ah, Mr. Ramsey...
You wanna really fall for this guy--not that I have--Hi honey! (she waves madly to husband again...)--read his autobiography. He's led a fascinating life that includes a short career with professional soccer in England (see shirt off, athlete comment above...). Very, very inspiring life.
Hey Diana,
I'll have to read his autobiography. I enjoy his shows on the BBC more than the ones in the US. They seem more authentic somehow.
Linda
I love Dumas! I probably should have brought chosen complete works. I love that you want to use your island time to become a better writer. Cool.
