Welcome Guest Bloggers Holly Jacobs and Susan Gable!

HollyJacobs's picture

H: Welcome to a second roadtrip with Holly and Susan. In Episode One, we took a plane to San Francisco for a conference, in this episode, we're heading to Buffalo to do a workshop for a RWA group and Susan was supposed to drive, but alas...

S: ...I did my Dancing With the Stars best dance move – while on the stairs – and fell down several stairs to the landing, bumping my head against the wall and spraining my ankle. Grace is not exactly my middle name. My mother actually sent me to ballet lessons when I was little because I could trip over a hair on the rug. She stopped the dance lessons, however, when she looked out the kitchen window to see me walking across the top of my swing set. Maybe I need to go back to ballet. Anyway, driving is not good for sprained ankles, so I was forced to ask Holly to drive. Which means I would have to ride in her car...

H: Now, my car is my pride and joy. For years, I drove a station wagon, then upgraded to a van. My husband and I have four kids and had a 200 lb mastiff...we needed something that could haul that many people (and dog). But back in 2004, two of my kids were off to college, and we sadly lost our mastiff, so I could downsize and my dh let me pick the car of my dreams. A 'fusion orange' Pontiac Vibe. It gets great gas mileage (and I was green before it was a vogue color) and is far roomier on the interior than you'd think. I love my car. I thought at first it might be a girl and desperately tried to think of its name, but then I realized it was male and his name was Floyd. I adore Floyd. My kids found (find) the car embarrassing, an even worse, found the fact I named it Floyd (and that they all started calling him by name) even more embarrassing. But I had every confidence that my good friend Susan would see Floyd's inner beauty and love him as well. Alas, not so much. So, when she told me of her graceful accident, Floyd and I volunteered to drive...even if she hates him.

ONCE_UPON_A_THANKSGIVING.jpg S: Hey! I don't hate him! Not exactly. It's just the color. Blech! Rusty pumpkin. Honestly, could you have picked an uglier color? But...he IS roomy, and he does get great gas mileage. And hey, I even made him famous by putting him in one of my books. (The Pregnancy Test. The heroine drives the exact same car, color and all. It's not MY fault that the hero makes fun of it!) So, I think HATE is a pretty strong word.

H: Okay...hate's too strong! LOL But it's a good color...I can always find it in a parking lot! LOL So, there we were, in Floyd, shuffling off to Buffalo. We talked books, talked family, talked kids...uh, Susan, I don't recall ever going on a trip and running out of things to talk about, do you??

S: LOL. No. We only stop talking when we get tired. It's amazing, but on road trips we can fill hours and hours with conversation. If we want to. Anyway, in Buffalo, we talked about how to get your foot in the door, tools & tips for making a first sale. But you know, we came back to a few truths that seem to emerge whenever we talk. One of them is how different people have different approaches. Like us, right Holly?

Floyd_0.jpgH: Oh, yeah, like us. I love having a rhythm to my life and to my writing. I write every day. And I tend to finish books early. I like to think of myself as 'reliable.' Other people use other words to describe my love of order and punctuality.

S: Yeah. Like anal. Obsessive-Compulsive. I'm all about hitting the deadline. Just...not quite as early as you do. As long as it hits my e ditor's desk on deadline, then I'm happy.

H: See, I knew I could rely on Susan to fill in the descriptive words for you! LOL It's not that I inflict my sick need for order on friends. I love my not-as-compulsively-orderly friends (even when Susan's Fed Exing her book the day before its due, I treasure her friendship...and pop a few antacids). So there we were, in Buffalo, talking about our different approaches to writing. It's not just getting things in early...or just on time. It's our entire writing style. I have a feel for a story, but really don't know my characters until I start writing them. The more I write, the realer they become. Susan on the other hand...

S: I need to know things before I really dive too far into the writing. I need to know some basics about my characters, especially their backstory, their GMC, their mottos. I also like to have pictures of my characters, so I usually go "hero shopping" on the internet before I go too far into the story. I have a lot of prewriting stuff I do. It works for me. And I don't care that my way doesn't work for Holly. She has her own way. There isn't one "right way" to do this. It's not my way or the highway. Not even I-90 to Buffalo.

Holly_SusaninBuffalosm.jpgH: Susan and I do a lot of speaking gigs, and that's something we always stress. There's no such thing as "Alway" or "Never." Different things work for different writers. Just like different books work for different readers. Just like different cars work for different drivers (see how nicely I worked Floyd back into the conversation? LOL). Writing, reading, in life...there are no absolutes.

S: Arrggghhh, how did we get back to the car again? Trust me, folks, it's ugly. But hey, we always think our kids and our books (and our cars) are the prettiest, even when the world sees them as ugly.

H: So that was our trip. After our talk, we went out with a number of the ladies in the group for lunch, then got back into Floyd for the roadtrip home. I'd like to say that I got home to a peaceful, quiet house, but as Susan will attest we arrived home to bedlam. My daughter was heading out to homecoming and her friends and their parents were all at our house for pictures. Susan, do we have a line to sum up this blog??

S: What makes one person gag (see photo of us ) is another's favorite.

Susan

Bad news...Susan's not going to be able to join us today, but I have her permission to be Pretend Susan, which I'll abbreviate at PS.

And because I'm feeling sort of psychic, I predict that PS will end up becoming a Floyd convert by the end of the day! LOL

Thanks for having us on again!

So What Are Your Favorites?

So, what are some of your favorite things? (I can feel a Julie Andrews moment coming on!) Raindrops on roses, maybe?

This morning, I'm working in front of a fire, with a huge cup of coffee close at hand. That come pretty darn close to being my favorite, especially on a cold autumn day.

But in terms of books, I'll confess, I don't have favorites. I read widely. Romance, of course, but also science fiction and fantasy. I love reading about philosophy and geek science.

And of course, a certain orange Vibe is a favorite, too!

How about you all?

So What are Your Favorites?

I like the idea of sitting before a warm, toasty fire with a mug of hot tea and a good book. But that's just it, an idea. Lately my life has been on a roller coaster (which I won't ride). Been working real hard on thoroughly changing my body shape and image, all the while working, carting kids and trying to stay sane.

Once the sanity returns to my life, I'm sure I'll find myself actually sitting before the fire, writing instead of reading.

PattiO

Patti

Patti,

Sorry things are so crazy, but I'm sending you fireside-tea-and-a-good-book wishes!!

Welcome!

Man, you are fast! I'm only on my third cup of coffee, LOL

I love orange, for one thing. My family room is painted orange, and it's our second favorite room in the house (kitchen is #1), but while we had doubts about painting a room this daring color (and it's real orange, not light orange or burnt orange or whatever), but it's always gotten rave reviews.

Otherwise, favorite things -- opening the windows for the first time when the weather warms up in Spring. Campfires in the back yard. A really good, hard days work in the back yard followed by a campfire and a good dinner. That moment in writing, when among all the struggling, things click and come together.

But now you have that stupid Andrews song in my head... dammit!

Thanks for the hysterical blog, Holly, Susan, and PS

Sam

Julie Andrews

Sam, Oh, wow, an orange room? My house is done in neutral wall colors, but in my formal living room I went wild and went with a deep red. I never thought about orange! You'll have to post a pic sometime!

And I'm with you on the campfires...fires in general! It's freezing here this morning, and I just started one in the fireplace.

So, Susan and I talked about our different work styles. I like doing a bit of writing every day, and finishing early (I'm finishing this new WIP today or tomorrow...a few weeks a head of time) and Susan waits until closer to the last minute to finish hers in a total writing-fest...

PS: Hey Holl, I always finish on time though! Be sure you tell them that!

H: Yes, Susan always does finish on time, but I get ulcers worrying she won't.

PS: And I get blinded looking at your car.

H: Ow, Susan, that hurts!

Anyway, how about you, Sam? What's your writing style??

Holly

PS (and a postscript PS, not a Pretend Susan PS) I'm going to be totally psycho by the end of the day, arguing with myself! LOL

I'll send pics

Mike and I basically have an aversion to neutrals, LOL. The closest we have to neutral is the bone colored walls of the dining room -- but the ceiling is brick red. ;)

My work habits range, but it sounds like you and I also have this in common. I do work every day, mostly. Not on weekends, so much. I like to take days off, but I always finish books early, sometimes months early, but at least weeks early. Have never really come up on a deadline. I will work at a pretty moderate rate, generally, maybe 10 pages a day on an ms, but I might have more than one thing in play so I'll put in a full day on several projects. Now and then I can be obsessive, and work long hours until my fingers hurt and I can't type anymore. Not too often, though. To me, one of the huge advantages of writing is that it allows me to enjoy life in the meantime. ;)

Sam

Sam...my secret twin

For those of you who don't know, Sam and I knew we shared a love of being stoned...er, stoning. As in, using stones to landscape. LOL But the longer we know each other, the more convinced I am that we might be twins.

Sam, Some people might say that's scary.

And even if I use more neutrals than you, I do it so I can really pull in color to accent. The house is filled with brick reds, sage greens and deep, dark browns. I love color.

OMG, I'm not sure my face

OMG, I'm not sure my face can handle another Holly & Susan blog day, LOL! My muscles have scarcely recovered from all the laughing I did the last time you visited!

Seriously, though, thank you so much for blogging with us today! Always guaranteed to be a great time! Holly, I already love your orange fusion car! When I was in college I drove a bright orange VW Beetle that had no heat and holes in the floor, but I loved it! Now I drive an apple-green New Beetle with a flower on the dashboard (funny how I find that poor flower on the backseat floor whenever my husband drives my car; I'm sure that's just an accident!). He hates my car and says he feels emasculated when he has to drive it (he drives a very manly Jeep, in Army green).

My favorite things?? Hot coffee and apple pie with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese...falling leaves...a clean house...a really good book!

Karen's Car

Karen,

Oh, my I love your car sight unseen! Both the current one, and the old one! Sorry about your dh's emasculation! LOL

PS: Apple green is much better than rusty orange, Holly.

H: Susan, shhh.

Hey, I've discovered a power. I can make Susan stop picking on me! LOL And while Susan might dress in very bright and bold colors (when we shop together, I head to the neutrals and she heads for the color) she drives the very neutral car.

Anyway, Karen, I've made a couple apple pies already this fall, and apple crisps as well. I love this time of year for eating! Uh, okay, in my Julie Andrew way, I'll add that to my list of things I love...cooking and eating this time of year! There's something so nice about baking again after taking the summer off!

wouldn't it be cool to have aspecial romance writer's Dancing with the stars? Who were you paired with Susan?

Christa

We'll leave the dancing with the stars to Susan. I have no rhythm. If there were such a thing as an ant-rhythm gene, that's what I have! Remember that Seinfeld episode with Elaine dancing? That's soooo me!

But I love the idea of Susan on it! And since she's not here, let's pair her up with someone. Antonio Banderas comes to mind...oooh la la!

Holly -- you and Susan are a riot. I came really close to buying and orange HHR (which is a Chevrolet) but I would have had to wait 6 months for it because they were so popular in the area I live and I couldn't wait that long because of problems with the car I had. So I bought a red one instead. It gets up to 35 mpg on the highway. Means I can travel more.

Ellen's car

See, Susan, Ellen likes orange, too!

PS: Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Ellen, Congrats!! My dh would love yours. Most of our cars have been red...his favorite. He let me win this one! I feel the love!

Holly

My husband and I were having a conversation about what we would request for a last supper if we were ever in that situation. I decided since it would be my last meal I'd just go straight to dessert-no need to count calories. So I want creme carmel,a piece of good pumpkin pie(needs the right amount of spice), a piece of my mom's Christmas cake (if only I could make it like she did), a piece of my granny's mincemeat pie, a piece of sour cream pie etc etc.

I love Floyd and I love his color. My dad had two Volvos -Janna and Ingrid. We owned Ingrid for a while and even though she was born in 1984, she is still going stong-our mechanic owns her now. My first car was an rusted out Chevette which I named Juliette.

Thanks for the laughs. I have a busy day planned but will pop in for rest and renewal.

Kaelee, Janna and Ingrid

Kaelee,

Where did Janna and Ingrid get their names? I love them! And glad Ingrid is still going strong!

I have a thing for names. I name all sorts of mechanical things. As a Heinlein fan, I've named my desktop, Lazarus, the laptop, Dora, and my PDA is Minerva. I even had fun naming my dogs...to understand my delight, know my real last name if Fuhrmann. One dog is Ethel Merman Fuhrmann, and when we got another, we went with Ella Fitzgerald Fuhrmann. The kids are not only embarrassed that I've named my car Floyd (and that they slip and call him that) but they also hate when I yell the dogs' entire names in public...so of course I do.

Oh, Julie Andrew's moment... Raindrops on roses, embarrassing children... Yes, that is a favorite thing! LOL

Holly I'm sorry

I should have quailfied my first story. That was about one of my favorite things. My dh and I have that conversation every once in a while and it shows how much we have each changed since we maried. He was a steak and fried potatoes guy who now searches cookbooks for new ideas. I know it's kind of morbib but it is one of our ongoing quirks?

Janna was a used 1964 blue Volvo station wagon when my Dad bought and named her.

Ingrid (after Ingrid Bergman sp?) is a blue 1984 Volvo station wagon with a standard transmission. She was my dad's only brand new car. We would still have her as she is in really good shape but I can't drive a standard. So I wave at her when I take my car into the garage for maintenance. Her present owner takes really good care of her. She still has less mileage on her than my present car.

Kaelee

I think that's what the best relationships do, Kaelee. They make you grow! And we've had those kind of conversations here. What-ifs. I think all readers/writers love the what-ifs. That's why they read and/or write!

And nice that you get to wave to Ingrid on occasion!! LOL

Great so see you, Holly

Hi Holly and Susan (you can pass that along to Susan :-> )

My best friend had a Volkswagon named Doug. My daughter's Neon is named Yoshi. My grandfather is named Floyd. I actually love the name because it's so...Floyd.

I do love naming inanimate objects. The place where our generator lives is the Mouse House. Our round sofa is the 'Shroom. The list goes on.

Our house is all brights, but I'm heading back to some neutrals. My husband's photograhy room will soon be taupe with burgundy trim.

As to stone gardening, since nothing grows here without constant watering (as in everyday) I'm going back to the desert. Next summer it'll be sagebrush, native grasses, sand and lots and lots of rocks. I'm hiring my friend to bring them in with his backhoe.

Holly--I just picked up your American to read as soon as I get my latest book done.

Jeannie

Jeannie, Love a Neon named Yoshi! LOL And yes, Floyd is just so...well, Floyd! LOL

I love the idea of native plants in a yard. While we do have grass, it doesn't require a lot of watering here. And I don't do the chemical thing. I battle those dandelions every spring with my gloves and a dandelion puller! LOL

Hey, and thanks for picking up Once Upon a Thanksgiving! I really hope you enjoy it! I once had a friend (the kind of friend who tortures for sport) who brought one of my books along on a school fieldtrip...and sat RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME on the bus. Every time she laughed, it was all I could do to see if she was laughing at something she should be laughing at, or laughing at something I meant as serious! LOL

PS: And because I'm being Pretend Susan today, I know, if she were here she'd be sure to say, "And the friend who tortured Holly on the bus wasn't me...I prefer to torture her about her car!"

I'm sure you both remember my little blue TR7 named Charlotte Samantha Winslow.

And now I have my lipstick red Hyundai named Ursula Pauline Howard.

Favourite things (other than naming cars):

Chocolate
Lazy Sundays where I don't even get out of my jammies

ani

Hi, Ani!

I'm so glad to be back, and despite the fact I'm trying to add an occasional pretend Susan post, I know she was disappointed she couldn't sign in today and chat.

Oh, I love tea. I bought a brown Betty teapot and it gives me glee to make a pot in the afternoon. My current favorite pj's are my Guinness ones! And last year my daughter and I instituted an annual PJ Day and stayed in our pajamas all day...it was a snowy day and we had nowhere to go. I plan on having another this year!

Your favorites and mine correspond nicely!

One question begs to be asked...milk chocolate or dark?? LOL

Holly

Usually

It's dark chocolate but the Dove caramels only come in milk chocolate.

Still--it's chocolate! No losing!!

I have a Brown Betty teapot at home. It belonged to my grandmother (other side of the family *snerk*).

I have a set of mugs that will hold a pint of liquid. That's usually what I make up in the morning.

As to favourite tea, have you ever tried Lapsang Souchong? I love that smoky pine flavour! Whenever I brew up a mug, one of my guys asks "Where's the campfire?" LOL

goddesani

I like Lapsang Souchong once in a while and it sure does smell like a campfire.

Ani

Ani,

No, I've never tried that kind of tea before, but I will definitely look for it!! And so very cool about your Brown Betty. I have this ugly yellow Hall's teapot (it looks like Aladdin's lamp) that my grandmother used at all our Sunday dinners growing up. It's ugly, but I love it...and its story.

We lived in her upstairs flat when my dh was in college. She asked me one day when she died, what did I want to inherit. I said that ugly teapot. A few days later, I heard this horrible scream and then my grandmother's sobs. I grabbed the baby, raced down the back steps from my apartment to hers, and found her on the floor, with the shattered pieces of the teapot. She kept crying because it was the only thing I said I wanted and she was getting out to clean it and give it to me when it broke. She was distraught.

Fast forward a few months, and my dh and I are window shopping at an antique show. And there's the teapot. The same one. It was something like ten dollars. And that's exactly all the money we had until my dh's next payday. I wasn't going to buy it, but he made me. I was thrilled, and my grandmother was almost giddy. Since we were officially broke she cooked us a great Sunday meal that weekend and served from the teapot...and then was never allowed to touch it again! It's in my kitchen now, and every time I look at it, I think of her.

I love family heirlooms and stories! Another favorite thing!

Holly (and Susan), as Karen mentioned, I'm not sure I can handle another dose of hilarity so close on the heels of the last! Although one of my favorite things is laughing, so today's a good day!

Hmm... now that I think about it, I haven't named my cars since the first (a Datsun 210, aptly named "Pumpkin")... What hits you for a deep red mini-van? ;p

Other favorites--chocolate (of course!), opening a new book, and sliding in between fresh sheets :)

Fedora

Fedora, Well, we're so glad to come back and visit here at Cigars...right Susan??

PS: Right, Holly.

My, Susan's behaving today! LOL And I always enjoy laughing with friends! As for your van, in my memory, my step-grandmother has red lipstick on. Her name was Alta. An unusual name, but it's a suggestion for you! LOL

And, yes opening a new book is always lovely. How about the way school books smelled that first day, when the binding was so tight it crackled as you opened it??

I meant to do this earlier.

Hope the reason Susan is missing is nothing serious and just has to do with your two different writing styles.
I am suffering from a chinook induced headache today so my spelling and thoughts are terribly disorganized. I am not making much progress on my to-do list either.

I babysat one of my great nephews yesterday and after four hours with a 4 year old I was so tired but man it is one of my favorite things to do.

Chocolate-dark. I used to steal my mom's semi-sweet baking chocolate when I was young.

Kaelee

Kaelee, I'm sorry about the headache...hope it's better soon!

Susan's gone because one of her boys (not her biological son, but one she took under her wing and loved as if he were) is graduating from boot camp today. They drove down south for it. She didn't know she'd be gone when we took this date.

(PS: But Holly's doing a great job pretending to be me.

H: Uh, Susan, how do you feel about Floyd??

PS: I'll confess, I'm warming up to him!)

See, I told you she'd learn to love Floyd!

And speaking of loving, I'm totally a dark chocolate girl myself! I've found most people are one or the other!

4yo's are lovely...especially when you can give them back! LOL

Chinook?

As in the helicopter?? I'm sure the thwap-thwap of those propeller blades are enough to give anyone a headache! Are you one of those Government secret agents who rappel down ropes from hovering helicopters, wearing night-vision goggles???

Chinook

Karen,

It's a wind, as well as a helicopter. I was thinking her headache was wind induced, but hey, if there were a helicopter over my head all day, I'm with you...headache city! LOL
