Welcome Guest Blogger Helen Brenna!
You Want Fries with that Beefcake?
So I was up at the gym the other day. Okay, okay, you caught me. I go every day. And, no, it’s not just to check out the guys. That’s a great bonus, but I really do exercise. Working from home, sitting at my desk all day writing, I need to get out. I confess, though, that while I’m at the gym I do get bored. I read, listen to music, watch the TV screens, and, of course, check out the guys. I can’t help myself. I may be middle-aged, but I’m not dead. Yet.
So last week, among other things, I was getting an eyeful of the men. (I can post this here, ‘cause my dh doesn’t read this blog. LOL) It must be the time of the year, springtime, and everyone’s getting ready for summer, but I was surprised by the number of men at the gym at 8:30 am. I must say, a nice assortment of the opposite sex.
The hair color, ages, and clothing were all different, but what struck me more than anything was how much men vary in size. No, not that kind of size. Get your mind out of the gutter, sweetie pie. I’m talking bulk wise, muscles and such. The Cary Grants versus the Mr. Universes of the world.
Women can lift weights and get their body fat down to the minimum, and, still, they seem relatively normal from a size standpoint. Even the most muscular woman isn’t all that much bigger than the non-jock.
But men? Wowser. You can put two men, both in great shape, next to each other and have wildly divergent shapes.
First, you got your smaller guys. Tall or short, they’re the George Clooneys and David Beckhams of the world. They’re in good, maybe even great shape, but they’re not all big and bulky. You can get a good grip around a smaller man’s chests. They’re sexy, but not in the least bit intimidating.
Then you got your average-sized men. The bit on the muscular side type of guys. Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, and Christian Bale. They’re big, more than an armful, and they can the toughest job done, but thinking about you and them in the missionary position doesn’t scare the hell out of you.
Lastly, you got your big men. These are the Vin Diesels, Gerard Butlers ala 300, and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnsons of the world. These are the guys up at my gym who could lift me up and carry me across the gym and barely notice my weight. Not that that’s ever happened to me. I’m just saying … or dreaming … I see a child in one of these big men’s arms and I can’t help but get all choked up.
So my question is this, can we ever get too much of a good thing? What size of guy is your favorite? Are you a small, medium, or large man kind of woman?
I must confess I have an ulterior motive to this post. All of my heroes have fallen within the average-sized guy category, but I’m dying to write a big man story. Is that a good idea or not?
I’m giving away a copy of my recent release, Peak Performance, today. You must be registered at Cigars to be eligible to win and I PROMISE, you don’t have to be a NASCAR fan to like this book!

Welcome Helen!
Glad to have you here, and congratulations on your Rita final! :)
Love your post, and I'm thinking it might give Karen Foley her little boost for the day as she's out traveling on business. :)
Of the selection you provide, I prefer the average guy, the guy who doesn't necessarily look like he's super strong, but you often find looks can be deceiving. I love it that you can have a normal looking guy, who due to his work, or just healthy living, can be amazingly strong under his unassuming clothing. :)
Conversely, the big, built up guys often look strong, but if you watch the reality shows, those guys never seem to be able to get the job done -- they always poop out. Do you ever watch Ninja Warrior? LOL Seriously, the guys on there are amazing, but the strongest ones really aren't overbuilt. They got strong on their jobs a lot of the time (the fisherman could be a cover model) and working on training for the obstacle courses). Very fun to watch. :)
And they are...lithe. (That's a word I use a lot in my writing, LOL -- I like lithe...I wish I were lithe...)
But the other thing I don't like about the body builder type is that they shave their body hair off - I just think that's completely unnatural for a guy. I like guys with body hair.
That said, there are a few larger guys who have caught my eye, and make me wonder...The Rock is a guilty pleasure, as is Colby on Numb3rs (though Don is really The Man on that show...I loved him when he was little Joel Fleishman on Northern Exposure...now, not to get ethnic, but there's something about Jewish guys, too, that's alway flipped my lid... LOL).
Anyway...thanks for the fun post.
Sam
Thanks for having ME!
Hey, Sam. Thanks so much for inviting me here today and I'm glad I could give Karen a boost!
I gotta agree with you on the all show and not so much action comment about the big, built guys. That can be so true. And there's something about the silly wrestlers that make them seem unattractive. That's what I like about Vin Diesel. He seems to be a pretty serious guy.
Shaving hair off. Ew!
And I'm going to have to work lithe into a sentence today. LOL
I love The Rock! Did you see
I love The Rock! Did you see Game Plan? *sigh*
And...haha, well, I guess I'll own that Jewish guys flip my lid, too. Well, at least one did enough to get me to marry him.
M
Yes, I did see the Game Plan
Yes, I did see the Game Plan -big guys with little kids kill me.
The jewish guy thing - hmm must confess loved the Northern Exposure guy and the whole Serpico look, but gawd I'm dating myself!! LOL
Decisions, decisions...
Hi Helen!
I love the guy on your Peak Performance cover! He's a hottie...size notwithstanding!! And I AM a NASCAR fan...
Does size matter...hummm...yes and no. I'm a 5'8" Rubenesque kind of gal...so little guys always made me feel like a Mack truck...I loved hurly burly fellas for the same reason...proportionally speaking, it was a better "look". A hot man is a hot man whether he's 5"9" or 6'9"
As for your hero...I'd go for it! It sounds like you've got an idea that plays into the big guy's size...not just big for the sake of being big...give it a shot! And, if in the name of research, you need to study these big guys in their element...the more...the better! ;-)
Besides, there's more to life than the missionary position!!
Thanks for the eye candy!
Hi Ronda!
Yay! A NASCAR fan. Have you been reading the series at all? Like it, or have any suggestions for improvement?
Oh, and Payton, the guy on my cover is an ex-climber, so he's very strong, but not super big build wise. They did an awesome job with him on the cover.
I'm only 5'3", so any size guy works for me, I guess, but I'll tell my dh you gave me permission for some research!
Congrats Sam
Congratulations to you, too, Sam on your RITA final. I'll be cheering for you!
Since I am fairly small
Since I am fairly small (5'2') I prefer the small size guy or maybe an average one would be nice but definately not the large size one. In fact some of the large size guys are gross as far as I am concerned. But I'm probably the only one who thinks that.
You're not Alone!
No, Ellen, I don't think you're alone in your preference. That's kinda what prompted this post.
Have you ever watched a body building competition? That's what I'm talking about.
I imagine those massive muscles turn some women on. Other's, not so much.
Helen, when you put it that
Helen, when you put it that way, wouldn't we all want a *large* man? ;-)
But seriously, I like them tall and lean, the longer the legs the better. And a few muscles. But that Christian pic is one of my favorites. Nom, nom!
I don't know if I've ever actually seen a really big-muscled man (in the wild) that wasn't like a body builder. And then they all seem to shave the hair off their bodies. Everywhere. Even their arms. It's kinda creepy to me.
Michele
Ah, Michele
I think Michele coined the Beefcake phrase!!
Tall vs shorter is an element I failed to bring to the table. But you're so right, Michele. I love tall. And that Christian pic is one of my favs too. I'd love to find a large poster like that!
Hey Michele!
Nice to see you here. :) I'm glad to see I'm not alone in the anti-shaving thing -- yuck. I don't ever want to be with a guy who has smoother legs (or bigger boobs) than I do... (I mean, seriously, some of those body builder types have way overbuilt their pecs, LOL...
Sam
Ha! There were a couple
Ha! There were a couple guys like that up at the gym.
men and hair
Ha! Samantha, that reminded me I dated a body builder once. He shaved everything. And then he got stubble. Which was so weird to feel on his arms, you know?
Much as I favor a bare-chested man over a hairy one, just leave all the stuff where it is, guys!
:-)
Hi Helen!
First, congratulations on the Rita finals! I'm excited to have so many Super sisters in the finals!
Personally, I like Jimmy Stewart-type guys. Long and lean. I have no idea why--perhaps something in my genetic make-up. I've read some excellent stories with big heroes, though, and have loved them, but dating-wise, I've never felt comfortable with a guy that was a lot bigger than me.
Hi Jeannie!
Hi Jeannie!
Thanks. I'm happy to see a Superromance showing in the RITAs too. I was worried when they cut the long contemp category out. Figured I didn't have a chance!
Could the long lean, Jimmy Stewart attraction have anything to do with cowboys???
Yup.
Yup. :)
I've read several of the
I've read several of the NASCAR books and have an idea or two for MSs of my own someday...but as far as suggestions go, I think they are obviously well written and well researched! I wouldn't change a thing...except maybe convince my local Wal Mart to carry them...
I'm not a fan of BODY BUILDERS...but big guys, football players and such, are good;-) Some are very good
???
Can't believe you Walmart doesn't carry the NASCAR books. That's crazy.
I'd heard they couldn't work out a deal for 2007, but we're supposed to be in the Walmarts with our 2008 books. Hmmm.
My Wal-Mart is in
My Wal-Mart is in BFE...along with my post office, but that's another story!
I'll go investigating again...I confess I rely on eHar for my NASCAR needs...
By the by...congrats on your Rita nomination! Such an honor!
Thanks Ronda!
Thanks Ronda!
Hi Helen
I have to say I don't notice many small men in romance novels. I like the average to big guy in a romance novel. I am tall and so are most people in my family so that is what I am used to.
Love this topic!
I agree with Maureen and the rest of the ladies who said medium to large guys. I love the football player-type guys the best, but average sized guys work for me, too, as long as they have some bulk in their arms. Yumma. Man, do I have a thing for thick forearms. *drool*
And I LOVE the NASCAR series. I mean, how much better can it get?--I love romance novels and I love NASCAR. Two of my favorite things wrapped up in a happy package. :)
Oh, BTW...did you break into the "Hottie" file on my computer? I *heart* all of three of those guys and, if I'm not mistaken, I have those pics! :P
Hi Maureen!
I think you're right. Not many smaller guys in romance novels.
That's something unique about the NASCAR books, that I hadn't related to this blog post. Most drivers, in real life, aren't all that big. They can't be to fit safely in the cars. So the stories, for the most part, reflect that.
The hero in the NASCAR book I'm working on right now, comes out 3/09, is only 5'8" which is actually smaller than the average man. I like to think of him as larger than life though. LOL
Hey Sassa!
Yay, another NASCAR fan!
With the thick forearm thing - you'd like climber then. They always have very well developed forearms when compared to the average guy.
As for hotties, how can you go wrong with these guys?
Hi, Helen!
I was temporarily distracted by all that gym-inspired eye candy...
Anyway, average is OK by me, but I do also love reading about tall, built guys :) Maybe because I'm not so tall myself, the contrast seems potentially exciting.
Anyway, love that cover! Congrats on your NASCAR release--what a terrific series!
Hi Fedora!
I'll admit, I think the small-tall thing is a sexy fantasy thing of mine.
And thanks!
Count me in...
I think for some of us on the more generous side (as Ronda said, "Rubenesque" LOL), the attraction of a big strong guy who can pick you up or throw you around a little (in the good way, LOL), and not end up in the hospital for back surgery is a nice fantasy...
I think it's something in the really big guys that brings out some "feminine" gene or something... makes you feel "teeny." And if you're not teeny in the first place, it's a nice feeling. :)
I agree on long and lean, though. Yes.
Sam
One more example...
You know who I find really sexy for his height? David Gregory -- the Today Show host and White House correspondent? He's one tall drink of water. Yum. And funny, and cute...
Sam
Boy, he is tall. And seems
Boy, he is tall. And seems to nice.
Who's the weather guy on
Who's the weather guy on Good Morning America...he's pleasant to look at!
I can't ssem to place the David Gregory fella...a sure evidence that I don't get enough news in my diet...
In fantasy land...I'm not really cognizant of the *size* of the man, just the definition...ripples, muscles, etc...
As for the eternal SIZE question...I think we'd all agree it's not the size as much as how you use it.
Digressing
I had a feeling this conversation might just digress in this direction!
Big and Beefy
Hi Helen,
I guess I like the standard tall and buff type. They don't have to have arms like The Rock. I can't think of anymore to say because I'm still drooling at the pics of Christian and Eric.
Hi Jane
Okay, I've been waiting for someone to mention Eric Bana.
Who else thought he was the best part of Troy?
Eric Has it
No question about it; Eric made Troy!! Okay, so it wasn't much of a hardship to watch Brad Pitt all golden and buff, either (and the way he swept that vestial virgin into his arms...whew!), but I absolutely love Eric Bana...that is one hot pic of him!
Okay, well, there's what I
Okay, well, there's what I like in my real life and what I like in my head. And in my head, I will say Mr. Diesel has played a part in some prettttty nice little fantasies. :)
I like lean men, usually, though. Lean, tall...guh...I have a serious thing for tall, strong men who look like you could just climb them like a tree...broad shoulders...big hands...long, long legs that go on forever...erm...did I mention the long legs and broad shoulders and just...tall...*sigh*
And then I have a soft spot for the Emoboy with flatironed, dyed black hair and black fingernail polish with guyliner and skinny jeans. Yes, I know I could break him with one hand but something about them...mmmm.
Okay, so I've outed myself as a woman who likes all kinds.
:)
M
Love your analogy
Climb them like a tree? Love it. Very visual.
Enjoyed your post. I like
Enjoyed your post. I like the average sized guy best.
Yay, Estella! I think the
Yay, Estella! I think the average guys won today!
Hallelujah!!
OMG, thank you, Helen!!! I just got back to the hotel after a (kid you not!) fifteen hour day! Nothing but crunching numbers, creating charts, briefing management, etc. etc. So it's 10 pm by the time I get back to my room (we finally had to leave the defense contractor's facility because they turn the power off in the admn buildings at 11), and find this very inspiring post! It's a true spirit-lifter.
I've always found myself most comfortable with average-sized men, somewhere around 6', give or take an inch, and pretty leanly built. That describes my husband, and I have to say it's a size I'm really comfortable with. But man-oh-man, when I see a larger-than-life guy, one who stands above the crowd, with shoulders out to here...well, I feel my pulse race just a tiny bit. The story I'm writing now features a very big guy, not unlike The Rock or Vin Diesel, who falls for a really petite woman (think Heather Locklear or Eva Longoria). Fun topic, and great pictures!!!
Karen, that's the story,
Karen, that's the story, someday, I'm going to write. Yes, ideedy!!
Men
I guess I would say I go for smaller men. I am kind of on the short side, so I don't like a real tall guy.
I'm chocking one up for you,
I'm chocking one up for you, lead bottom!
Now that I think of it,
Now that I think of it, Suzanne Brockmann wrote one of her Troubleshooter books about a hero who was small. I think in the book, she sort of compared him to Ryan Seacrest (in looks and in build). The other guys in his SEAL unit teased him about it all the time, but it never bothered him because he could pretty much kick a** on anyone, regardless of size. In the book, he fell in love with a really petite Asian-American woman who made him feel big, because she was so tiny. No idea how big Ryan Seacrest is, but there are some women who make him look small by comparison!
Sometimes I wonder if we
Sometimes I wonder if we don't glaze over stuff we're really not keen on in books because we love the authors so much. Ya think?
Hey, thanks guys for having
Hey, thanks guys for having me! It's been fun!
Someday, I'll be writing that big guy book all for ME!
I always want fries with my
I always want fries with my beefcake, lol.
I never can get too much of a good thing.
I like the tall larger man. One with muscles and a good strong solid build. Oh yes!!!
And the winner is......
Me! No, just kidding... I can't win... *sniff*
The real winner of Helen's book is RONDA!
Congrats Ronda!
Sam
AWESOME! How cool is it
AWESOME! How cool is it that I win a NASCAR book with a hot tall, lean, climb him like a tree kind of guy on the cover!!?
Thanks, Helen!
Waving to Sam!
Congrats, Ronda!!
And thanks so much, Helen! What a fun discussion! :)
