Oh, Brother!

Ellen Hartman's picture

Our topic today is brothers. I bet you're all excited about that!

Let's start with a poll. Raise your hand if have had a crush on one or more of the Curtis brothers from The Outsiders? Darry, Pony, my personal favorite Soda Pop? Leave your hands up if you’ve lusted after any of the brothers Brady—Greg? Bobby? Peter with the soulful eyes and middle child syndrome? What about my beloved Winchesters—Sam or Dean?

I love brothers in my fiction. (Of course, I’m quite fond of my real life brother, too, but in an entirely different, real life way. ;-))

Last year I sold two books to Superromance and I was over the moon, partly because they would feature the McNulty brothers, JT and Charlie. I’d finally get to write this dynamic I find so fascinating. It turns out I loved writing brothers as much as I love reading them. JT stars in The Boyfriend's Back, coming in May and I'm hoping readers enjoy him and Charlie as much as I do.

Does anyone else feel this way about brothers in books, movies, or shows? Have you written your own brother characters? (I know Jeannie has. Will and Brett Bishop (The Horseman’s Secret and the Cowboy’s Return) are fantastic characters.)

As I was writing JT and Charlie’s stories, I realized part of what this particular relationship offers is a change of pace from the hero/heroine plot. Brothers are blunt. They can be rude. They punch each other in fun and sometimes in anger. They banter, drink beer, and provide opportunities for ridiculous, vulnerable, and intriguing behaviors. The hero may reveal himself, consciously or not, with his brothers because the relationship is so familiar and ingrained.

As an author, I appreciate any chance I have to write my characters in scenes with their siblings. Birth order and family dynamics are almost always compelling backstory and solid character details. Big brother—little brother. Middle brother. (Hoss Cartwright, anyone?) Estranged brother. Competitive brother. Protective brother. Overprotective brother. All those scenarios are rich territory to mine for character.

So, anyone else love brothers? Let’s hear about them. The Quinns from Nora’s Chesapeake Bay Series? Her McKade brothers? Gwyneth Bolton’s Hightowers? Ricky and David Nelson? Have you written your own brother characters? Who do you love and why?

(I'm off to my day job now so I won't be back to comment until lunch time (east coast). Have fun!)

Oh man...

You have me trying to remember all of the brothers now... LOL From a family of all sisters, I can't say I relate to the brother thing much, though I always wanted one. I always thought it would be cool to have an older brother, but that's probably the romanticized idea of the older brother too. For instance, while everyone lusts over Roarke, I am the lone weirdo thinking I would rather have him as my older brother, LOL.

I know I read all of the Nora brothers... it's been so long it's hard to recall the particulars, but I think I really enjoyed the McKade brothers (is that the one with the dark secret, which ends up being that he likes bondage? Back then, I guess that was a big deal...), and then of course the Chesapeake brothers (ani, Phillip is mine, but I know you just want Cam anyway... LOL).

I think some of my heroes have had brothers lurking in the background, but I haven't written any actual brother stories. What does tend to fascinate me is men who consider each other brothers, even if they aren't related, and the same for women with sisters.

Neat topic, Ellen, and I know I'm really looking forward to the book.

Sam

Sam and Phillip sitting in a tree

Sam--the MacKades are 4 brothers from a small town with a Civil War battlefield--Antietam, maybe? No bondage. Sorry. But now I kind of wonder who bondage brother is... ;-)

The older brother character is an interesting one. JT McNulty in The Boyfriend's Back is the older brother and he definitely had the "protect my kid brother" tendency. But he's also reluctant to "try" at anything so he needs to mask his caring. He's kind of a cross between the stereotypical older brother and a slacker. I had a lot of fun writing him. ;-)

My real life brother is older than me, but not by much. I never really thought of him as a protector, but I definitely engage in a bit of he-can-do-no-wrong hero worship. ;-)

I read three of the four

I read three of the four McKade books. I remember Jared and Devin and the one who was rebuilding the haunted inn. I did not get to read about Sean(?). I really enjoyed all the brotherly fighting in those books.

Shane is the baby

I also enjoyed the brotherly fighting. I think I'm ashamed of that but it doesn't stop me rereading the books.

;-)

Shane...I knew Sean wasn't

Shane...I knew Sean wasn't right. The Redemption of Shane McKade. I'll have to try to find a copy.

Darn, now it will bug me...

There was one set of brothers, and one of them had "a dark secret" which ended up being his rather unusual sexual tastes, and I could have sworn it was the McKades (I don't remember which one was the Sheriff, but he set my toes on fire, yum).

If anyone knows, please do tell... LOL Maybe some of our more knowledgeable Nora people will be by today. I have read all of those books, but it was a while ago and memory blurs...

Sam

Brothers...

I also come from a family of girls, although I always wanted at least one brother. I have two daughters, but no sons. My girls have always wanted a brother, too (an older one who would bring his cute friends home, LOL). Like Sam, I think their desire for a brother is a romanticized ideal, and the reality would be very different than what they imagine. In my own writing, I tend to write about sisters.

As far as favorite brothers...I loved reading Jude Deveraux's stories about the Montgomery brothers, and Johanna Lindsey's books about the Malory brothers. I can't think of any movie or television series brothers!

Fun topic!

Sisters

Hi Karen,

I have one brother and one sister. My sister complains because I seem to kill off the sisters in all my books. She wanted us to go to therapy so I could work through my issues. ;-)

(She's actually one of the very dearest people in my world. As Bridget Jones would say, "One of my top" people.)

I have two boys myself. Their relationship fascinates me, I think because it's the one sibling relationship I've never experienced. It's been interesting to see the differences in a family without a "girl." My sister and I did a lot of covering up for my brother when it came to things like birthday cards and holiday gifts and showing up for family game night. My boys don't have anyone to pick up the slack, so they have had to take the lead in all this stuff. They'll probably be nice husbands by the time I'm finished training them. :-)

I think I've read the Jude Deveraux books you mentioned. I have to go check on Amazon and see if I recognize them.

I love brothers.

I love brothers. Personally, I never expected to write brothers, but once I'd written Will in The Horseman's Secret, then Brett pretty much demanded his own story. To my surprise, the bad brother was the most fun to write and redeem. One of my all time favorite TV shows (finally out on DVD--well, two seasons anyway) is Simon and Simon. Love those guys. And let's not forget the MacKenzie Brothers in Strange Brew. Ok--not romantic, but they are fun to watch.

Jeannie

Take off, you hoser

I was trying to figure out who the MacKenzie brothers were when it suddenly hit me. I should have remembered who'd left the comment--the answer would have been immediately obvious. ;-)

Thanks for the laugh, eh?

I can't believe that you didn't intend to write about brothers. The mysterious backstory you set up in Will's book just cried out for the tormented (but redeemable) brother to appear in the next one. I'd have been bummed if I didn't get to see him work out his issues, too.

Couldn't figure out who the

Couldn't figure out who the MacKenzies were...;)

I'm working

I'm at work or I'd be at YouTube right now. ;-)

No bros for me

But what about TV's "THe Hardy Boys"? I always liked Parker Stevenson better than Shaun Cassidy.
I have two sisters - I'm the baby. We aren't close at all.

Parker was much better than

Parker was much better than Shaun.

Jeannie

I'm sending a petition in to Sam to see if I can have you banned. Are you kidding me? ;-)

My best friend had a framed photo of Shaun Cassidy on her nightstand. We always turned him face down when we were changing. ;-)

This makes me want to do a study of personality types, though. I saw up above Sam likes my least favorite of the Quinn brothers. Now you and Marcie like the "other" Hardy boy. I want to know how these preferences correlate.

I should see if there's a Ph.D. program where I can study this. A Ph.D. in brothers. Heh. I could sell my dissertation to Harlequin! ;-)

Gasping

L-l-least favorite???? Phillip is the least favorite? The way he thawed out that chilly academic heroine (was it Sybil?)? The BOAT scene? and... he cooks! And where he came from, and what he overcame??? Then, just the general hotness. Sigh.

You may find things going wonky with your blog connection today Ellen -VEG-

Sam

Ban me if you must

Ban me if you must, Sam. I stand by my man Cameron Quinn forever.

(Although I think some of my issues with Phillip are actually with his heroine. I didn't like her one bit.)

P.S. In my world, Cameron Q. does not have a ponytail. Nora and I have never seen eye to eye on that issue so I've done a bit of mental redecorating.

LOL

No, no banning. The upside is I don't have to share.

She was a cool fish... but he was up to the task. Heh. In truth, Phillip was probably too urbane for me, at least on the surface, but there was just a general appeal there that the others didn't hold for me, especially Cam (and ani can verify I am not just saying that b/c he's your favorite, LOL).

Or ani might have been an Ethan girl... I can't quite remember now... doesn't matter as long as I have the corner on Phillip. ;)

Sam

Does not compute

MarcieR: Parker was better than Shaun?

I can not even take IN this type of blasphemy. ;-) ;-)

Although this does bring up one of the other bonuses of brothers. There's one for everyone!

My dark secret...

No, it's not bondage. LOL

I actually saw Shaun in concert when I was 15, LOL. But I will admit, though I was sure that I was supposed to marry him then, I think his real brother was far cuter (yummy David) and I also liked Parker. He was darker...a bit.

Sam

My dark secret

It's not bondage either. ;-)

I saw Donny and Marie in concert. (Against my will. Long story.)

I also saw David Cassidy in Joseph and His Technicolor Dreamcoat on broadway. I waited at the stage door and have a photo of him waving out the window of his limo. He was definitely an awesome brother!

Not only is David awesome, I

Not only is David awesome, I recently watched a TV show on him and apparently he's rather...gifted by nature...in certain areas.

The many gifts of David Cassidy

I know how gifted he is!! I've heard him sing.

That's what you meant, right? ;-)

Uh...why yes....

Uh...why yes....

gifted huh!

I wonder whatever she cold mean by that comment, oh yeah i forgot that you can think naughty here too!
I loved brother shows, if one didnt work there was always a back up!
I'm the middle of three, older bro and younger sis. I love my brother, he gave me my first computer, actually he's given me two, and is sooo my go-to guy when i have pc problems.
as for brothers i always loved Little Jo, but hoss much more, he was soo cuddly to me.
parker totally!!

fun topic ladies.

The Cartwrights

I think I cut my brother loving eye teeth on Bonanza. Little Joe was the one for me, but that may have been more because he had the nicest horse than anything to do with his character. ;-)

I'm ignoring the Parker thing. I just don't get it. ;-) ;-)

ani is da bomb

ani answered my cry for help as I was obsessing about this, and it wasn't a Nora brother book, it was a Lori Foster series, the Winston brothers, and it was Chase I was thinking of.

Whew. Now I can let that go and get some work done... I was in danger of no writing today it was driving me so crazy, and I needed to find out! LOL

Sam

Brother Billy

Ok... so I must admit that I am not one for reading romance novels (unless, of course, they are written by Samantha Hunter). However, I have had a major crush on one certain TV brother...

Brenda's brother on Six Feet Under, Billy, was HOT. I don't know what it is about crazy men who need therapy, but they seem to be the kind I go for. Maybe it's the vulnerability factor (although Billy was quite messed up, he was also extremely vulnerable)... or maybe it's the "I know I can fix HIM" syndrome. Whatever the case, I believe that my husband is the first man I have loved who has not needed some sort of therapy! Ha ha ha! Billy was also artistic, intelligent, and INTERESTING. Maybe that's the ticket--who could ever be bored with someone like Billy???

I started watching that...

but didn't keep up with it. I can't even think of any TV brothers... I don't watch Supernatural... I'm not sure any of the shows I watch have brothers. How weird.

And Heather, I bet if I send you the romance novels from all the gals here, you will be hooked... I mean, seriously -- look at those covers on the sidebar. Who can resist??? LOL We'll have to work on converting you, LOL.

But I still appreciate a devoted reader. *G*

Sam

edited to add: never mind -- just thought of two -- though they share an actor. In The Pretender, Jeff Donovan and Michael T Wiess are brothers (and what a pair they make, yum...), and then in Burn Notice, Jeff Donovan also has a brother, though he hasn't been on the show this season all that much. He didn't do much for me. He was a good character, but the brother dynamics were still interesting, since JD plays Michael Westen, and the other actor plays his younger, irresponsible brother, and a lot of their rather troubled past figures in to their relationship, as far as they took it on the show, anyway...

I'm not...

I'm not going to admit which Brother Billy I thought you meant before I read your message. It's too embarrassing.

I haven't seen Six Feet Under. It came and went during my TV-Free period. I do love a man who needs therapy, though. I think that's part of why I like Dean Winchester so much. He's totally screwed and clearly going to be unable to ever live a normal life...except, maybe, if I helped him work through his issues. ;-)

You brought up another wonderful thing about fictional brothers. They're fictional! We can imagine all sorts of rescue fantasies (both rescuing and being rescued) because it's all made up. Heather, you've obviously made an excellent choice of a non-therapy needing real life husband, so I say continue with the unstable fictional men at will. :-)

I'm with you in my ability to forgive many a flaw in favor of interesting. Intelligent and artistic on top of that = irresistible to me. ;-)

No one ever remembers Adam

On Bonanza, but I always liked him and his black hat. ;) He was classic romance hero material.

Sam

We should share

Sam--you and I should always share brothers. We'd never have an issue with wanting the same one. ;-)

It does work out nicely...

Sharing can be so awkward in this case... ;)

Although I see Jane is another Phillip admirer...hmmmm....

Sam

Quinn Brothers

I love the Quinn brothers, too. My favorite is Phillip. I also love the Loretta Chase's Carsington brothers and Jacquie D'Alessandro's Oliver brothers, Nathan and Colin.

Jane

Nathan and Colin are two of my favorite names. I may have to look them up!

You and Sam can figure out what to do about Phillip. I'll continue to monopolize Cameron!

no brothers till 13

I had no brothers til I was 13 and my dad remarried. All of a sudden I gained 3(2 older, 1 younger) The younger one was only like a year younger than me so my stepmother had the headache of us two just starting our teenage years while one of her older sons and my sister were like 17-19. So yeah 4 teenagers at one time. Guess the parents survived cause they've been married now 25 years.
hmm book brothers Lori Foster's Buckhorn Brothers(Hudson) and Lauren Dane's Chase Brothers. On TV I'm going with Peter and Nathan on Heroes, but from week to week we can't tell if Nathan is on the good side or bad

Peter and Nathan

I don't watch Heroes, but isn't the guy who played Jess on the Gilmore Girls one of those brothers? (Milo?) I had quite a thing for Jess. Love those intellectual bad boys. ;-)

Wow--your family dynamics must have been on a serious roller coaster there for a while! Glad the marriage is still going strong!

yup

the guy that plays Peter was Jess. He was the main reason I check out Heroes. Love the bad boy. In the Outsiders it wasn't any of the Curtis brothers or Tom Cruise but Matt Dillon as Dallas. Also loved him and Mickey Rourke playing brothers in Rumble Fish.

Jess

also is in Fergie's video Big Girls Don't Cry

yes Ellen

Parker over Shaun any day.....
and yeah the guy on Heroes was Jess on Gilmore Girls

Thanks Christ and Marcie

Ah, Jess.

My sister has a permanent spot on her Tivo for Jess and Rory's first kiss at the gas station. I've watched that particular television moment a lot and, somehow, it doesn't get old. :-)
