Dolphin Dreams

It’s about time. I’m almost forty, and I figure it’s about time I fulfilled some of those lifelong dreams. Since my chances of ending up on Oprah are pretty slim, and my dad isn’t likely to buy me a pony (besides, I outgrew that desire once I had kids and realized the fun of potty duty), I’ve moved on to other dreams--one that’s coming true tomorrow. I get to go dolphin training. I haven’t been this excited since I was five and waiting for Christmas morning to arrive so I could see if Santa brought me a Barbie Townhouse. I love all things aquatic. Am a total fish fanatic. Have fish things all over my office, have a fish screensaver, would dine at a seafood restaurant every day of the week if that was possible in the Midwest (I know, I can hear you laughing all the way over here) and sorely miss the 45-gallon fish tank we used to have. When I go visit my family in Massachusetts, the first thing I do is roll down the windows and inhale the scent of the ocean. When we went to Florida, I got up extra early every morning and sat on the patio with the binoculars, waiting to see the dolphins and whales swim by. So when a reader who works at an aquarium offered to let me come be a trainer for a day, I made it happen (not an easy thing to do amid the hectic pace of the Romance Writers of America conference--that thing is wall-to-wall stuff to do, appointments with my editors and agent, etc.). But tonight, I’m jetting down to Corpus Christi, and in the morning, I’ll be in the dolphin tank, swimming with the fishes. Literally. I even bought a special digital camera, an Olympus Stylus 770, that goes underwater, and am hoping to get some unique pics with that. This is such a cool thing, I will definitely use it in a book down the road (I’ll have to come up with a plot all around this, that’s for sure) or maybe several books. Either way, I know it’s one of those experiences I will never forget and definitely one of those check marks I can make in the Achieved a Dream category. So look for pics on my website in a few days, and I hope this inspires you to go after some of your lifelong dreams, too!

Wow

Holy Cow Shirley, I envy you. Swimming with the dolphins, what a great experience. When I lived in Philadelphia, we went to the Jersey shore every summer. Watching the dolphins frolic in the sea was a lot of fun. They are so playful and I could sit and watch them for hours. They were usually out too far for people to swim with them but, like you, I always wondered what it would be like to swim with them. When I visited Florida several years ago, I got to see the dolphins up close. They are some amazing and very smart animals. I hope you have fun swimming with the dolphins and please be sure to let us know all about your experience. Mads:)

wow

what a great experience. It sounds like you should move to the seaside, Shirley! Isn't it funny how so often we never live where we would be most at home. My husband has been using a program called 'heart math' - basically its meditation techniques using a pulse monitor for visual feedback - (his work involves stress management strategies) - and the literature is pretty interesting. I remember him mentioning something about dolphins - their hearts have unusually strong electromagnetic fields that have measurable, positive effects on human brain activity. I thought this was interesting as there's always the 'airy fairy' stuff associated with dolphins, but the fact is, they -really do- 'connect' with people. It isn't just wishful thinking. Swimming with dolphins has never really been on my to-do list as I love the sea but am terrified of it! Its power frightens me. I'd love to cuddle a tiger. Preferably without getting eaten. Trek in Nepal. I'll probably need a knee reconstruction first.. or at this rate, a walking frame! Um, what else... an exhibition in an important gallery. To see all my paintings on those big white walls. That would be cool. Drink a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin at Maxim's. Wear an Issey Miyake original. Sail in the Fjords. Live to see my grandchildren, or at least, my children reach maturity, and whatever happiness they are seeking. Euri

Oh, yes, Tigers

Tigers would be cool. :)

I think it's right to be terrified of the sea. I love it, but have healthy fear. More people should, I think.

"Wow" is right!

What a wonderful chance, I'd be there right with you. Hope you have a great time and I'm looking forward to the photos.

Definitely wow!

That sounds like so much fun, Shirley. I can't wait to see the photos and hear about the experience. Color me green!

That sounds great. I hope

That sounds great. I hope you have fun.

This will be amazing...

I am an ocean freak, too -- love it. I saw a TV special once on Grenada, and down there you can get in the water with whale sharks, and think that would be amazing. It's all incredible.

Oceans are dangerous, but the oceans are also in such danger from humans these days... anyone interested should definitely read Sylvia Earle. She's incredible.

I saw they found a 500 lb squid down in NZ or AUS, and I always shake my head -- okay, so we found this amazingly large animal in the ocean -- LEAVE IT THERE! No, some guy who needs a boost to his testosterone drags it out for a picture and a news article. (sigh)

Sorry... LOL ... I love the water, the things in it, and I get worked up. ;)

Can't wait to see the pics, Shirley... :)
