We Meet Again, Old Friend

Dee Tenorio's picture

Most folks try to reunite with their exercise equipment in January, when they feel horribly guilty about everything they'd eaten over the holiday season. It's all about losing weight. Or, they often claim, because they want to feel young and healthy again. Then there's those freaky people who actually exercise all the time, claiming it gives them a high or something. (Note: You're not on a high. You're suffering from lack of oxygen to the brain. There, I said it. There's something wrong with you. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Now, I'm nothing if not painfully honest with myself. I'm what you'd call...squishy. Nice to hug, bad in a bikini. And I'm kind of okay with that. (Mostly) Still, come September, I find myself reuniting with my almost good buddy, my exercise bike. I have a bizarre tendon condition that effects my joints much like arthritis. Apart from being my own food group, I'm also a castanet, which means my girls get dinner and a show.

With the moist months comes some seriously achy, creaky days. Enter the bike. I read a few years back that if I can do some regular, light, non-impact exercise, it cuts down on the discomfort. Which I must admit, I was all for. Everything but the exercise part. At heart, I'm not even a couch potato. I'm a bean bag.

Still, since it's dry and hot and miserable in the summer, I generally fall off the seat. I mean to get back on, but if it's not slathered in frosting, it generally doesn't happen. Until the marine layer comes back in September. If I want to walk this winter, I'll be hoisting my rump up on the bike and pushing pedals for the enjoyment of swearing connoisseurs the world over.

So how about you? Today marks a new season, which means all of us are likely going to be doing something new with our schedules. What are you adding to your plate for fall? Is it good or bad? Fun or not fun?

I too get back on the

I too get back on the bike...just because it's time, when the kids go back to school, to get back to work, too. So, I started exercising again. I only do about half an hour on the bike. It's my reading time. I'm not sure it's helping, but it's surely not hurting...!

M

Yup, half hour...

without extra tension, in my case. There's programmed "trails", but no way am I doing those. The bike has heavy enough pedals without going "uphill". Used to do 8 miles a day in that time. No idea what it'll come out to now. :)

Carbs

LOL on adding things to my plate in fall -- I was just commenting to Mike how something about fall/winter makes my body crave carbs -- starchy squash, potatoes, apples, bready things, pasta, oatmeal, etc ... some of these are fine, and will make their way into the fall/winter menus, but others must be kept at bay...

Mostly because I am the direct opposite of you guys in terms of exercise. Right around May/June, I start emerging from the winter hibernation and wanting to move... summer is my high exercise season with kayaking, walking/hiking (now some running, too), yard-work, etc. Some of that drifts into fall, still walking/hiking, limited kayaking, and still yard work, but it's harder to get moving on a chilly morning that makes me want to stay in bed. Then, winter. When I am more likely to eat worse and exercise not at all, because I don't like indoor exercise machines. We always have to walk the dogs of course, and there's shoveling if we have snow, though we usually use the blower, but this year I am committed to getting out and using the snowshoes if we have snow, and keeping up my indoor situps, weights, etc. It's just so hard when the days are dank and cold and dark. I've lost 8 lbs since June, and a few inches, and while I need to lose more (I try to lose 10-15 every summer/fall, and then just keep them off for the winter), I want to try to shed 4 more by December, and then just stay steady until May rolls around again, without giving into winter doldrums and gaining them back.

Although the other thing that picks up for me big time in fall/winter is crafts... I bought three new sewing craft books, and have already finished three small quilting projects in the last month, and I'm back to that. That tends to not happen in the summer, but I think the colors and brightness of the material helps cheer me up when the days are short...

Sam

A big part

is that you don't get as much sun in the winter as I do. I've heard that doldrums hit everyone after weeks without sun, as happens in winter in the Northern States. And I'm a natural home body--it stems from my cheapness--and winter is when I feel most cuddly. Which makes it a great time for writing. It's just about time to start making hot chai again!

Truly though, if I wasn't messed up this way, I'd only have guilt to get me up on the bike. Or like I mentioned earlier, lol, frosting! :)

I just want to fit into some

I just want to fit into some pretty clothes when I go to RT!!!!

Not exercise

But, for me, the start of school and autumn is when I deep clean. Forget spring cleaning. Why waste the time then when you can be outside?

But fall comes and I start tearing apart cupboards and closets. Out with the stuff I didn't wear this summer, out with the fall clothes I put away last year (I can't believe I saved THAT).

Last weekend, my son (17) and I tore through the "playroom". We threw away 3 boxes of stuff. And I have 3 boxes of stuff (toys, books, etc) to take to Goodwill. There are also 5 boxes of outgrown clothing waiting to go to Goodwill. And 2 boxes of books I'm sending to friends.

Now, to tackle the upstairs closet! Heheheh.

ani

You can open...

your closet? I was just glad my neighbor knows someone having a girl. I have roughly 3 billion pieces of outgrown baby clothes creating a tower in my closet. It's scary to say the least.

Good luck, I LOVE Spring cleaning!

I'm with you...

Our closets are scary! And I'm going through a gazillion baby clothes and toddler clothes and little kid clothes... Argh! Can't they make one-size-fits all clothes so we don't have all these to deal with? BTW, I HATE cleaning... maybe that's how everything's multiplied ;) Happy riding! (And Ani, good for you!! Can you come give me some tips on how to tackle this huge mess? :))

fall goal

Fall is my favorite season and I plan to enjoy it by taking Daisy(my 1 1/2 year old yellow lab mix) for a walk. I will benefit me for distressing at the end of the day and ridding her of some excess energy. I've gotten away from walking her daily and I really need to get back to it.

Sam-I'm like you. I love all of that acorn squash, apples, scalloped potatoes, chili, baked potato soup. Yum!

I usually think about

I usually think about sitting down at the sewing machine in the fall. I am too busy with my yard and flowers to sew in the summer.

Meh

I'm horrible about exercising. Well, especially without an easily accessible facility. In college I hit these strange periods where I'd do intensive cardio and weights 5-6 days a week.
I recently tried to do yoga, and had fun until I got too busy. Also/unfortunately I think I did something very bad to my knees/wrist. Ah well. I like to blame professional school for making me squishy. It's all the stress and time spent studying not having a life! And I'm sticking to that story. (I like your oxygen deprived theory as well, Dee!)
