Time Crunch

The release of a new book is an exciting thing. My new historical To Ruin the Duke hit shelves about a week ago, so my calendar has been filling up with book signings and blogging dates to get the word out. Unfortunately this comes at a time when I am on deadline with my next book, which is due to Avon this summer. I turned in To Ruin the Duke last summer, so for me, it’s old news, though for my fans it’s brand spanking new. My current work in progress is the new and sparkly (and sometimes difficult!) thing in my life, which is as it should be.

To_ruin_official.jpgSince I am on deadline, my family expects me to hole myself up in my office every night after dinner to put in my daily page count for the new book. My kids have come to recognize after eleven years of publication that when Mom is on deadline and in her office with her headphones on, steer clear. All requests that do not include blood or fire should be redirected towards my husband. And my husband—dear, patient man that he is—happily juggles these requests, guarding my writing time so that I can lose myself in the book and deliver the type of story that my readers expect from me.

So here I am, promoting my new book while writing the next one, stepping out of my cave for air once in a while to let my kids know that I haven’t met with some fatal accident. It might be easier to juggle a demanding writing career and family, I suppose, if I didn’t have a day job in the mix as well.

Yes, I still work at a full time job. Everyone knows things aren’t easy out there, and companies are really hustling to hang on to their customers. Mine is no exception, and there are times where my skills may be the deciding factor on whether or not we keep a customer. (But no pressure!) There are days when I come home so wiped out from work that the last thing I want to see is another computer. But still I sit down at the keyboard and get my page count done for the day. It’s the only way to make that deadline. Writing these books is a labor of love.

Of course I dream of the day when I become successful enough at my writing that I can make it a full time career. What writer doesn’t? But that day is a ways off yet, and this month’s time crunch is a temporary thing. The new release won’t always be new. The book in progress will get completed and turned in. The weekend will come, releasing me from the 9-5 grind for a couple of days (though while on deadline, the weekend becomes time to accomplish more pages of the work in progress!). At some point during the year, there will actually come a month or two where I won’t be actively writing. I take a little time off to let the creative well refill again.

In the end, I think the time crunch is worth it. I can’t give up writing, and I can’t give up the day job right now. I think we all make time for things that are important to us. And writing these books—sharing my stories with people who might be cheered up by them in today’s gloomy climate—is worth a few hours of my time.

Now if only I didn’t have to sleep…just think of what I could accomplish!

Hi Debra and welcome to

Hi Debra and welcome to Cigars! I am so impressed that you can do your page count after work. I try to do that, but my brain doesn't like working after 1 p.m. I put it to work, regardless, but it prefers mornings. Congratulations for keeping all the balls in the air!

Work hours

Many's the time I am up at 5:30am trying to make a dent in the day's pages while the rest of the household is asleep. Telemarketers don't call at 5:30am!

Welcome Deb!

First, what a great cover! Really eye-catching -- feel free to tell us about either book, the one on the shelf, or the one you're working on. :)

I admire everyone who works, writes, and raises a family at the same time -- I had one year of writing while I was still teaching and finishing a separate degree, and I didn't have any small children, so it was a little bit of a time crunch, but I have to admit, for me at the time, writing was a lark and my entertainment, so I didn't feel any pressure. If I were to take on a full-time job now, it would certainly be a different kettle of fish.

And where would we be w/out fantastic husbands? Even though I do write full-time, I wouldn't be doing it without his support, that's for sure.

Welcome to Cigars! :)

To Ruin the Duke

Thanks for the warm welcome, Sam! And thanks for asking about the book. I describe it as identity theft in the Regency time period with a secret baby. Someone is impersonating the Duke of Wyldehaven, running up debts in his name and causing scandals and seducing women. Now Wylde has been sequestered at his estate for the past two years mourning the deaths of his wife and child and working on his ever-unfinished opera. He gets called back to London for the funeral of a friend, and this is when he discovers that this guy has been causing all kinds of trouble for him. He meets the heroine when she turns up on his doorstep with the newborn child of her dear friend and demands he take responsibility for his son! The child's mother had died in childbirth and made Miranda swear she would do this for her. While Wylde is trying to track down the imposter, Miranda gets caught up in a mystery of her own regarding her own past...and the adventure begins from there!

WOW

So you know what my day is like, lol. Except I tend to do my jobs/writing either on the stairs across from my babies playpen--they are not so content as yours to turn to Daddy...or anyone else, lol--so that the girls can see me and I can see them. I write in one or two line spurts before someone does something or needs something. (In fact, at this moment, house is asleep and I'm taking wild advantage)

Wishing you all kinds of luck with your current and upcoming romance. Folks tell me it gets easier. We can wish together. :)

Dee

Babies and Daddy

Well, Dee, I think it helps that my kids are both over 15 years old! But they weren't always, and it took some late nights for me the get my books done.

Wow!

That's amazing, Debra--you're writing and working and balancing all that with being a wife and mom! I'm glad you've got a wonderfully supportive family--what a blessing!

Your book sounds terrific--I'll definitely be looking forward to reading it! And I hope that you'll be able to realize your dream of writing full time soon!

Writing full time

from your lips to God's ear, fedora!

Life

Hi Debra,
Congrats on the new release and on balancing such a busy life. I've been a fan since I picked up "Three Nights" a few years ago.

Three Nights

Thanks, Jane! Three Nights was definitely one of my favorites. I believe Avon is going to be offering it as a free download on their site at some point.

Go, go, go, go...!

Wow, Debra. This book sounds fantastic. I love a plot I haven't read before.

No sleep! Keep writing!

Love the blood and fire requirements. I'll have to try that.

Blood & fire

It definitely works better when the kids are on the smaller side. Now they just want the car keys!

My mouth dropped

when I read you have a day job too. Based on the beginning of your post I didn't think you'd have time! Way to balance it all.

And yes, the cover is beautiful.

About time

I have time, it just means I have no life. Must be why I ended up marrying a guy from work LOL

Hi Debra!

As I can't go a day without reading and they bring me so much comfort and too they are the best medicine. So all you do in getting these stories written mean alot. Thank you!!! Caffey

Caffey, I might print out your comment and hang it over my computer for those days when the muse is giving me fits. Thanks so much!
