Welcome Guest Blogger Cynthia Cooke!
Is the vampire dead?
Well, technically yes. But what concerns me is the belief that readers are growing tired of vampires. That editors and agents don’t want to see anymore of our favorite fanged friends. Say it isn’t so!!
If that is true, and vampire stories have run their course, then how do they account for the popularity of Lifetime’s Blood Ties? Or why CBS is launching a new show this fall with a vampire private investigator called Moonlight? A show I can’t wait to watch! Am I alone? If I were, would all that money be invested if people were tired of vampires? I think not!
And yet, in Dallas this summer at the National Romance Writers of America conference all I heard from agents and editors was that they’re tired of vampire stories. I started to feel bummed. I love vampires. My book, Rising Darkness, out right now is about a vampire. A very sexy vampire I might add!! And he has a brother who’s a vampire. And I want to tell his story!! And I have ideas for even more. Vampires are hot, they’re sexy, they’re . . . to die for! Don’t tell me the vampire novel is dead. I’M NOT LISTENING!
You tell me. Have vampires worn themselves thin? Or do you find yourself standing in front of a long row of books at the book store reaching for the dark sexy cover that might show a drop of blood or the gleam of sharp pointed teeth, because you know the hot vampire hero is going to offer a taste of excitement you just can’t find with any ordinary human hero?
If so, then embrace the darkness and share your thoughts on how you feel about the men of the night. Everyone who comments will have the chance to win a signed copy of Rising Darkness. You must be a registered user of the Exploding Cigars blog to be eligible.

Vampires
You know, I haven't read many vampire romances, but I hear people talk about it all the time, so they must not be "dead". It makes me wonder, though...why vampires? Why aren't witches as popular? Surely witches need romance? LOL - yes, I wonder strange things!
Witches!
Not really. I love witches. Probably because I was a huge fan of Charmed. In fact, I'm plotting a witch heroine right now! And of course, all my hero and heroine's troubles in Rising Darkness can be blamed on a jilted gypsy witch! Who could blame her though. Hell hath no fury . . .

A jilted gypsy witch! That
A jilted gypsy witch! That sounds intriguing! Cynthia, what made you want to write about vampires?
Vampires
Anne Rice. I devoured every book with Lestat in it. I loved him. Although my favorite series of hers was the Witching Hour books, so I'm not totally devoted to vampires. ;-) But personally, I just find vampires very sexy, all that lusting and having to control themselves. It makes them very fun to write!

Say it ain't so
I have loved vampires since I first started reading. Back then it was kids scary stories and now its as romance. I won't ever grow tired of them. I love vampire books, movies, and tv shows. It editors think that it's dead, they are dead wrong. Sure it seems to have become a fad, but there will always be the die hard (no pun intended lol) fans who will want more. I would be horrified if there were no more written.

Me, too!
That's how I feel EXACTLY!

Oh, my very favorite Anne
Oh, my very favorite Anne Rice book is "The Witching Hour".
It's interesting what grabs people, when, and for how long. "Interview with a Vampire" came out maybe 25 years ago? Maybe more? I think there's always going to be an interest in books with a paranormal element, but maybe the fervor waxes and wanes.
Dead vampires??
I am one of the people who feel there has been a glut of vampire books on the market BUT if it's well written and the backstory makes sense to me, I will read it.
What I don't like is it seems as if so many authors have jumped on the bandwagon and decided to "write about vampires" and the vampire is no different than any other character.
Or their backstory (by which I mean, can they see themselves in mirrors, are they sensitive to crosses and garlic, can they roam around in the sunlight) makes no sense. I don't care if they can do all of the above as long as they stay true to their own backstory and not just, Oh look what I can do today!
Nora Roberts is one of my favourite authors but I was very disappointed in her Circle Trilogy wherein she wrote about vampires. Only one line rang true with me: If my heart could beat, it would beat for you. *sigh*
So, no, I don't think vampires are dead. And, yes, I'm anxiously awaiting the new show Moonlight.
And I like the Nocturne vamp stories because I like the length. They're just right for getting my vampire fix!
So I'll look for your book when I'm in town this weekend!
ani
vampire mythology
I agree about the vampire's mythology. I find today's vampires exciting because editors are so open to us wirters changing and creating the vampire. I for one don't agree with the vampires being affected by crosses and holy water. I suppose in my mind the vampire was around long before Christianity. I would grow quickly bored with vampires if they were all the same. But as you said, that delicate world has to be maintained. I'm glad to hear you like the Nocturnes. The senior editor there pushed our release dates back because she wanted to make sure the four of us had the time to create our Dark Enchantments world without rushing. Mythology and world building is key to a strong paranormal, I think.

Hi Cynthia!
Welcome! This is a fun discussion, and we're happy to have you here! :) The book looks great.
I guess I am a traditionalist. I get a little squirmy if the mythology is changed too much. I read one author, I can't even remember her name now and I don't want to hurt feelings anyway, but she reinvented so much of it that to me they weren't vampires any more. I think they should be dangerous, too -- dark -- I dislike when vampires are turned into kittens. I could live with them not being warded off by crosses, maybe, or being able to stand against them, but I do think they need to remain invisible in mirrors, nocturnal, stake through the heart, drink blood, etc. They have that animalistic nature, which is what we love about them, I think, there's always that thin line of control -- they want to bite, but will they? I don't care for them being too domesticated.
I agree, ani -- Nora didn't do well with that series, for a lot of reasons I won't detail, because I do love her books, but wish she never went there...
World building... agh. I guess I have to get to it -- that's one of the things I'm fleshing out in my own para wip today...
Sam
Vamps
Hi Samantha!
Thanks so much for having me!!
I too like my vamps dangerous. I mean, that's the whole thing, they don't have a soul right? And they wnat to feed on us. They are predators!! That's what makes the vampire hero so interesting to me. He's flawed by nature, and yet his human heart makes him want more. Want love. I guess that's why I like writing vampires so much, all that built in conflict all ready there! ;) When you used the word kittens, my mind flashed to Spike playing poker with kittens. LOL! Now there is a mixed-up, totally flawed vampire and who doesn't love Spike?!!

LOL
LOVE that scene... "Time. . .time is what makes cats out of kittens..." LOL I've just started rewatching that season last night. :)
Yep, you and I are on the same page here. :) Although Spike seems to have a soul even before he gets it back -- he had the chip, but as Buffy points out, that's not a soul. And yet I do believe he loved her, but I also think he needed a soul to really love... that was always a confusing issue for me with him... I wish they'd explained it more, but it was like he could remember love well enough to act it out, believe he could feel it? Angel/Angelus defined the whole has a soul/doesn't have a soul behavior thing...but then Joss seems to back away from that later -- do they need a soul to love? I guess we could even say Angelus loved Buffy, though in a sick way. Uh oh.... don't get me started with Buffy. LOL
Sam
Spike
See, Spike was different in all ways, he was "the one". It was fated for him to wear the necklace and save the world rofl Now don't get me started, I could go for days.
Also I think who they were when they were alive reflected in a big way who they were as vamps. When Angel was alive, he was a drinker etc, Spike was....well he was kind of a sissy lol The reason Angel is so...not violent with a soul is because he was cursed to feel everything he had done. Who knows what he would have been like with a soul and without the curse, and without Angelus being such a bastard. Even as a vamp Spike was never all mean, he even tried to save his mother from dying. Which didn't turn out too well for him lol He was also upset about Dru and Angelus so he had some feelings.
ok I am stopping lol
Ashley
Spike cont....
See, I completely forgot about the mother and Dru. And wasn't Dru fun?! Okay, I'm going to have to go back and watch the first two seasons (the only ones I have so far.) ;)

Spike
Wow, I guess I never really followed the whole need a soul to love thing from season to season. I always thought Spike loved Buffy more than Angel because he seemed to give so much of himself to her, and then in the end, he sacrificed it all for her. Where Angel just seemed to turn tail and run. But then he was written out of the show. ;) Angel just seemed to have a hard time loving anyone. It's so neat seeing everyone's different perspectives on that show, that's what make Joss a god! ;)

Well, to be fair
I don't think Angel had any choice, which was the tragedy of it -- he couldn't be with her completely, or he'd turn evil -- so, he left -- did you watch Angel at all? There's a completely heart-breaking epi where he's able to be with her normally, but well... I won't ruin the surprise if you haven't seen it. ;) It's part of Season 4 in Buffy, they had linked shows. And yes, Joss is brilliant.
Sam
Poor Angel
That's true. I loved Angel. Don't remember the episode you're speaking of. Hmm. Either I missed it, or my brain is fried (as I suspected!) ;0 I loved the season where Spike is a ghost!! That's the one I remember best. Yep, it's time to hit the reruns again!!!

I think it should have
I think it should have always been Angel and Cordy, I feel like he loved her more then he let himself love Buffy (for obvious reasons)and they just worked better for me.

Angel and Cordelia
Me, too! I felt totally jipped (sp?) when Cordy went with Connor instead. Even if she was possessed. I felt like she and Angel never got their moment of bliss. VBG!!

Poor Angel just can't get a break when it comes to women, though that is pretty much the norm with Joss Whedon

No So
Welcome, Cynthia, and congratulations on Rising Darkness! I love the cover, BTW.
I have a good friend who writes about those sexy bloodsuckers, and I know she also came away from Nationals feeling discouraged about the message the editors and agents were sending. I absolutely do not buy into the theory that vampires have been overdone. Didn't Christina Dodd just come out with a vampire romance? And Kathryn Smith's series, The Brotherhood of Blood, is fabulous! Not to mention the legions of younger readers (my 13-year old daughter, included) who are hooked on the Twilight saga by Stephanie Myer, and who will no doubt be scrambling for more as they mature. My daughter is already salivating over the promise of a fourth book in the series and is always on the prowl for more vampire books.
I say, bring 'em on!!
Karen
YA vamps
I know what you mean. My daughter loves those Stephanie Myer books! I haven't read the Kathryn Smith series yet. I'll have to pick that one up. Maybe instead of saying they don't want to see anymore vampire books, the editors should have said how they'd like the see the vampire evolve. Maybe a certain type of vamp is getting old? Who knows how they think?! It seems like they change their minds every conference. :) Weren't they just saying the historical was dead last year? Maybe we should write some historical vamps! LOL!! Any type of vampire you're tired of seeing? The vampire hero? Villain? Sidekick? I haven't seen too many vampire heroines. Hmmm. Or vampire cowboys!! I thought the Western was supposed to be dead too, and I think there are two Westerns hitting the big screens this season. I guess I need to dust off the old crystal ball!

I love vampire novels. I sure hope that they don't wear thin.
All things paranormal
I love to read the paranormal genre especially the vampires and shapeshifters. It does seem like there are an awful lot of vampire books out right now but if there weren't I would have nothing to read in between J.R Ward's and Sherrilyn Kenyon releases:) Not to mention every author has a slightly different take on vampirism and it is always fun to read those differences...what can I say....there is just something about a sexy vampire!!!

I'm a scaredy cat...
so from my perspective, there does seem to be a TON of paranormal books lately (that I'm too chicken to read), but I would be surprised if that market were to suddenly disappear. And I agree with whoever already said that if the book's well written and has interesting characters, the vamps (and witches and demon slayers and whoever else is along for the ride) will live on!
Scardey Cat
You know, most of the vampire romance books aren't scary, like say a vampire novel you'd pick up in the horror section. It's more about the seduction than the fright factor. You might try giving one a try!

Of course the vampire is dead!
Er, undead, I mean. :-) You just can't keep a good vampire down. So whether the genre continues to put out more vampires, or if it takes a bit of a break, we will always have vampires. They're just too interesting to read about. The immortality, the morality issue of to drink or not to drink.. And aren't they always handsome?
I happen to have a keen interest in Cynthia's book, since it's #2 in the Dark Enchantments series that I'm a part of! It was so cool to be able to work in the same 'world' with fellow writing friends. I suggest everyone go out and pick up Rising Darkness right now. It's so good.

Dark Enchantments!!
LOL!!! Thanks Michele!! And Michele has a vampire book out this month too -- Kiss Me Deadly! And her cover is way awesome! But yes, we had a great time coming up with the Dark Enchantments world -- filling it with vampires, demons, faeries, crystal goddesses, even a lust demon who is really sexy. And in my story, Damien, my vampire, loves the heroine but can't touch her because of a curse! Sound familiar Samantha!!! LOL!! I didn't really draw the connection at the time though. Honest!! LOL!! Actually, it's the heroine who is cursed, not the vampire. But stiiilllllll. VBG!

For me vampire stories, like shifter ones, can never get old and tired. They are so fun and exciting to read. I would feel lost without them.
Shapeshifter vamps
I haven't read any shapeshifter vamps. What do they shapeshift into? I guess I've always thought of shapeshifters as werewolves, or creatures from indian legends.

I hope they continue...
I'm new to reading paranormal/vampire romances. I was always the strictly human/male & female purist in my reading. But I started making friends at some online book sites and they were reading about vampires in love and witches in love and I got to thinking that there has to be something there if everyone but me seems to be reading it.
I like them, I really do. The only concern I have is that with the increase in books written with vampires as the central character, the market is getting confused as to what a vampire is and what he can/cannot do. I don't understand why there are so many different vampires... some authors seem to have their own set of rules or legends that they use to create their vampire. Some fly, some shape shift, some have mates and share blood, some can mate with werewolves, some can mate with humans, some were born, some were made, some have donors, some use animal blood, some can disappear into thin air... yet others can't or don't even address these issues. I don't mind fiction but I get caught up in wondering which authors are using the traditionally accepted vampire laws and which ones are making up their own.
vampire mythology
There are a lot of differences, but as long as the author explains it well, I don't mind going along for the ride. But, it has to make sense. For instance, how can a vampire be born? They don't age? They don't bleed? Their hearts don't beat. Do they? If they do, they need to explain why so the reader doesn't get lost because we do have these set expectations. I kindof like the disappearing into thin air thing. Do they move really fast? That would be the only thing that would make sense to me. If it makes sense, I'm there!

I am new to reading paranormal, including vampire novels and all I can say is I hope that they don't "die" out! I haven't had enough yet, not that I probably ever will! As for why I like them, I can't really say...maybe just it's just because I've got a soft spot for a brooding man. :)
Welcome Cynthia!
Waving! So nice to meet you at RWA! I love that cover! You know, I often find Vampires are overdone for me but I never count out what a great author can do for a book or old premise. So if the author is amazing, then I think Vampires can still feel new and fresh. Paranormal on the other hand hasn't gotten old to me at all. LOVE IT! Can't get enough of it! I'm excited about the new paranormal television shows out this fall!
