Beautiful creatures

Sarah Mayberry's picture

Hello All! I am feeling positively bouyant - just four more days of 9 to 5 servitude left, and then it's pyjama city for me! Can't wait to get back into writing my romance novels after nearly 6 months of in-house work in TV land. How delicious to be in charge of hair, make up, wardrobe, direction and acting in one of my own books instead of having to hand my ideas over to other people for them to "collaborate" on. Don't get me wrong - sometimes brilliance arises from collaboration and the work of many minds. But sometimes it all turns a nasty, smelly shade of brown, too. Not that I am guaranteed to avoid the same fate when it's just me and the computer screen. But at least I know who to blame...

The countdown is also on for our trip to Europe. Two more months, in fact. In which I have to pack up our rental house and put our life into storage, write a book and a novella, and also a number of scripts. From where I am sitting now, it all seems very doable, however. It's the heady lure of the pyjamas again, I think.

Anyway, I have a question for Cigar members this week. I was watching an interesting documentary on the Moors in Spain the other day, and they were showcasing an amazing Moorish castle in Southern Spain. It was absolutely breathtaking, and I was filled with awe for the beauty human beings are capable of sometimes. With Europe on the horizon, I expect to be hit with many such occasions in the near-ish future. For anyone who has ever seen the stained glass windows in Saint Chappelle in Paris, or the gothic glory of Notre Dame, or any of the other great man-made wonders of the world, I wanted to ask: what do you think is the most beautiful thing human beings have ever made? I look forward to your answers, and the winner (who will be randomly selected from registered members)will receive a complete set of Secret Lives of Daytime Divas books - Take On Me, All Over You, and Hot For Him. Over to you...

Have never travelled to Europe

But I think the Getty Museum in Los Angelos is amazing. The buildings and grounds are works of art in themselves. With the view of the hills and ocean, it is a thing of beauty. Then there is the art inside the buildings, which is outstanding. I was looking at a painting by Van Gogh and started hypervenilating. Combined with the attitude that this art belongs to the visitors, it is an amazing place. Another favorite place is Wrigley Field in Chicago. It is one of the most wonderful places to be on a sunny, summer day. Forget about my inner chid, I am tryin to embrace my outer crone.

The Getty is so cool

It was so the highlight of my last trip to LA. The location, the building itself, the art, the whole vibe of the place. Just a great, great space. The closest Melbourne comes is our new Ian Potter Gallery in Federation Square, a sort of mishmash of "shards" that, on a whole, I can't really admire, even though I get that they were trying for something interesting architecturally speaking. The gallery itself on the inside is a lovely space, however.

Beautiful art

I would say some of the most beautiful things made by humans are the paintings done by famous artists like Monet, Manet, Georgia O'Keefe, Van Gogh, etc. and sculpture like the statue of David and Rembrandt's great works.

Another bonus about Paris...

...Is that it has the Louvre. And, of course, Florence has the Uffizi. So I will not exactly be at a loss for brilliant art to admire in the coming months. I saw the Rodin museum last time, and the sculptures there are so clever and inspiring. And the work that goes into casting a bronze - just so time consuming and rigorous. It really gave me a new appreciation of the work that sculptors have to undertake to get the fine detail they desire. This time when I visit any galleries, I plan on paying the extra and getting the little audio guide, too, because it's so much more interesting when you have some historial and biographical detail to put the work in context.

Beautiful Things

From what I've seen I have to pick St. Patrick's Cathedral for that combination of beauty and awe that I felt.

I have never been to New York...

...But I did check out quite a few churches in Paris last time, and I plan to see a lot more in Rome,Florence and Venice. There is something so incredible about the shapes they achieved with minimum technology and maximum artistry, and just the feeling of being in a place where so many people have come for comfort or celebration or prayer. And, sometimes, the very simple, older churches are just as awe inspiring...

Eye of the beholder...

I don't know if I would say they are the most beautiful things compared to art, cathedrals, etc, but I have to say airplanes. I am not a fan of flying, but still, the last time I was in a plane I decided to enjoy it, an adventure, and just the amazing fact that these things can get in the air and move so gracefully, and stay up, and actually be so safe and all. It's incredible to me, and really, when I see them fly overhead, sometimes catching the light, etc they are pretty... When I'm in them, and they safely get from place to place, I think they are utterly beautiful, LOL. You also see things from that view you're never going to see any other way, and that's kind of cool.

Amazing to me the first person who ever thought of flying, or going down under the sea, etc, and all the vision that goes into building these machines...

Sam

I like your thinking, sam

Since I am about to entrust my life to one of these big metal things for over a full day of flying, I think I will embrace my love of the airplane, too! I must say, however, that I probably have more appreciation of a really sexy car. The new Porsche Cayman, for example. Or even my beloved Mini Cooper (sadly left behind in NZ). Sometimes, the designers get it just right and every curve and corner is a delight...

beautiful machines

I've read somewhere a comment that the motor car was one of the few places where real beauty can still be found in design - the aesthetic of the sleek, aerodynamic line, sweeping curves, etc. I'm a bit of a sucker for staid English design - Bentleys and Rovers (especially when driven by chauffeurs or wealthy doctors...)

Sarah

Well does my son count? He's about the most beautiful thing I've seen, when he's not being a demon. I can't really think of anything that I've seen that was just so great. Not been to many places. So sad.

Of course he does!

I don't have children of my own, but I know how I feel about my nephews and neice and godchild. They are precious, precious vessels. And yes, sometimes they are demons. My step mum is babysitting all three of my sister's children today. We conferred for a short while last night about how she was going to amuse them. In truth, my heart quaked for her!!! Three children, all day. Terror! But also much, much laughter and fun and madness.

Doh!

I just thought of Hugh Jackman -- definitely nicer than a stupid plane! What was I thinking? LOL

He and the many other delectable men out there...

Sam

Sean Bean

but we are restricting this to inanimate objects, right?.... I've never been one for the 'if there was a fire and you had to pick between saving the guard or the Mona Lisa....' thing. For me its the guard every time. Human life is far more precious than any mere object, however carefully crafted. How unique is that person! A singular point of view, a lifetime's memories.

Ok, Ladies...

The beautiful man list could go on for years!!! But I do agree that human beings are unique, special, and far more valuable than any object in the world. It constantly amazes me that our politicians are so ready to expend human life to win territory/points/money whatever. I know I couldn't sleep at night...

Hugh Jackman

Sam, I have to agree with you on Hugh Jackman. His parents made a very beautiful man when they made him. Mads:)

Catherdral

I have never been to Europe, but I have been to Russia and the cathadreals there were absolutley breathtakingly gorgeous! I could not believe the elegance and craftmanship, and they were centuries old, so that had to take some doing to last this long... Debbie

Russia...

My aunt is about to head off for a big trip through eastern Europe, including Moscow, Warsaw and Budapest. The Russian cathedrals are high on her list of must-sees, I know. They look absolutely amazing in photograhs. I shall have to add them to my travel list, also...

Fashion

Being an artist, I'd have a list as long as my arm of great buildings, sculptures, paintings etc. However I've a bit of a weak spot for fashion. Issey Miyake creates the most amazing things. And remember that Valentino that Julia Roberts once wore to the Oscars? There's a sublime portrait of her in it, but I can't find it on the net. She looks regal. I think fashion has something in common with literature, where it is governed by form and practicality - tradition, aesthetics, readability=wearability ... so it offers interesting challenges to the artist, and its very limitations give rise to great creativity.

Fashion is art

I totally agree with you on fashion. A beautifully designed dress or coat or even a shoe is a form of art. I am personally obsessed with kimonos and Japanese textiles. I have a couple of boxes full of stunning kimino silks that I plan on making into quilt covers and cushions when I once again have some spare time away from the computer. I also have a little shoe fetish that I would like to indulge soon by enrolling in a short-run course where they teach you how to make your own pair of shoes. Very cool!

i do love the temples in

i do love the temples in southeast asia, from cambodia, ankor wat. very beautiful building. would love to visit it.

Well...

...I am a complete trollop for anything Asian. I love the pagoda style of building, and the clean, elegant lines of so many Asian buildings. The stone carvings, the wood carvings, the color - just beautiful. The hidden temple we visited last time we were in Bali was so lovely. A really special day.

Castles

I think I would love to see some castles in Scotland or anywhere they have them. The pictures I have seen of them are great.

Love a castle

I saw a half ruined one in the Cotswolds somewhere when I was last in the UK. The building itself, and the gardens as well were really incredible. The world must have been a scary place when castles were essential, don't you think?

York Cathedral

...has got to be one of the most amazing cathedrals I've ever seen. The stained glass artwork is unbelievable. Also, I'm going to echo Samantha...I have a special love for airplanes. The sleek lines of a fighter jet (and any guy in a flight suit *g*) draw my eyes every time. :)

men in uniform

There's a theme developing here amongst us Cigar ladies... men and babies. Hmmmm.... I haven't seen the York Cathedral, but I do think that stained glass windows are beautiful. That's why I found Sainte Chappelle so awe inspiring in Paris. It's like being inside a kaleidoscope. The hours and hours of craftsmanship and effort that must have gone into creating such masterpieces is trully mind boggling.

talking about men.. and my top two.

the cover on All Over You is gorgeous - I'm not generally into 'clinch' covers but his little hint of bared hip ...*phwoooarrr* .... I bought a little glass the other day - shaped like a wineglass, but a little bit bigger than a port glass, with a pink bowl. I'm not usually a pink person, but it looks so pretty on the window-sill. I think often everyday objects can be very beautiful. We always make huge deal about big stuff - the big-occasion days, the big buildings, events, but I think the fabric of life is really about the small stitches. The little everyday things. Its a shame that so much of the everyday is shoddy and cheap, disposable. But if we really had to make a choice, I think I'm going to pick two: the Eiffel Tower at night, because it is both beautiful and a remarkable feat of engineering, a testament to 19th century optimism, and it is secular. My first choice is the Taj Mahal, because it is stunningly beautiful, meaningful, and a gift of love. cheers Euri

As always...

Euri, you inspire me. I came to the understanding that happiness is in the small moments rather than the large, splashy ones some time ago, and I guess the same IS true of objects, too. I love having well-crafted things around me - voluptuous champagne flutes, delicious soaps,my hand-carved "opium" bed from Indonesia. I get an enormous amount of pleasure from a well cut coat, or a curvy shoe, or just a beautifully cooked and presented meal. But, since I asked the silly question, I will agree with you that the Eiffel tower at night is a sight to behold. The twinkling lights, the great panoramic view you can get from the Trocadero... My partner's mum tells me that the Taj Mahal is simply breathtaking, too. Again, another testament to the human imagination. When all we really NEED is four walls and a roof, what drives us to create so many beautiful buildings? And as for that man's hips on the cover of All Over You - definitely my favourite cover so far. So damned saucy with a great hint of promise. The Blaze cover artists have been outdoing themselves lately, in my opinion.

Sheesh!

You don't ask for much, do you? LOL Stonehenge The Parthenon Winged Victory Van Gogh's The Irises Neuschwanstein Chartres Cathedral anything by Monet The Pyramids of Giza I've seen all but the last in person and they've all changed me. ani

I'm so jealous!

What a list, ani -- that's wonderful.

I have to admit, I am big with VanGogh. Though his Sunflowers are what grab me -- I have a whole coffee table book of his paintings here that my niece gave me, and love it. I look through his display at the Met in NYC, and it's all Mike can do to drag me out. No other artist really touches me as much, though I do love art.

You know, though, I am not as into sculpture - probably because it's usually people and has no color...

Sam

Wow

Am officially in awe. I really must get out more. But I'm adding them all to my travel shopping list, Ani. Hope you get to Giza soon...

Others

Some I forgot: Michaelangelo's David Falling Water (Frank Lloyd Wright) Lalique If I think of anymore, I'll edit this post!

No Doubt About It

Babies!!! What is more beautiful than a New Born Baby. You can visit all the most beautiful sights in the world but, look at a New Born Baby and you see a Miracle. To me that is the most beautiful thing that human beings can ever make. I could visit all the most beautiful sights in the world but, a New Born Baby gets to me every time. Mads:)

Now...

...You know I'm not going to argue with this one! Babies are very, very special, which is just as well, considering the amount of nappy changing and sleepless nights they generate. Those little hands and tiny fingernails. The squidgy, pudgy little arms and legs. Those short-sighted eyes blinking up at you... Must go pummel my ovaries into submission... Stay well, Mads

Beautiful is ...

I don't know that I've seen anything as beautiful as the human body, the way everything works just so. It's really miraculous, but I'm thinking we can't take credit for that lol. As far as places, some of the ancient Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza and Tulum took my breath away. Also, I've always wanted to go to Ireland and Scotland to see some of the castles. There is so much history there and I'm drawn to that, to that connection to the past. I've always loved the written word, so literature in any form is certainly something that can be beautiful. I love everything from Jane Austen to Janet Evanovich and all points in between. I think anything a person puts their heart into has worth and beauty. Everyone may not appreciate it, but the person it was meant for will.

so many to choose from

I agree, we can't take credit for how amazing the human body is - except for certain delicious men with hard-earned six pack abs etc! There was a six part series by the BBC called The Human Body a few years ago. Absolutely fascinating and amazing. As for historical buildings like the Mayan ruins and old Scottish castles - yes, yes, yes. I am always astonished by the intricate detail, skill, and craftsmanship that goes into these old buildings. Like the pyramids, I wonder how they did it it without all the scaffolding, cranes and concrete we seem to not be able to do without these days. And as I have just been knee deep in Regency romance reading recently, I can only be very boring and totally agree with your reading list, also!

Beautiful is ...

Helsinki Cathedral in Helsinki, Finland.

A part of the world...

...I have never been to. So much to see, so little airpoints to do it with! I am about to google it and have a look. Thanks for playing,Minna

Beautiful Things...

Wow, there are some great responses here! Congratulations, Sarah, on your pending freedom! My guy and I lived in Europe for five years, yet I'm drawing a blank on what might be considered the most beautiful thing...I really loved Mont St. Michel, the medieval village and monastary in Normandy that is completely surrounded by the sea at high tide. It seems to just rise out of the waves like Atlantis. The Eltz Castle in Germany, nestled on the Mosel River, is like something out of a fairytale. Closer to home, I visited the JFK Library in Boston and fell in love with some of the gowns worn by Jackie O., as well as some of the gifts given to her by world leaders, including a solid gold purse, encrusted with every precious gem you can imagine. So...the above, plus Gerard Butler. He's possibly the most beautiful...

Gerard butler

Ding dong - Gerry is a hunk and a half, isn't he? And how lucky are you, hanging in Europe for five years! The monastery sounds incredible - am about to google for images. As for Jackie O - well, she was noted for her style. I'd be too nervous to have a solid gold bag on me, however, unless it came with accessory body guards...

Greek

I'm not sure if anyone wrote this yet. Greek god and goddess statues......They're beautiful.*g* Hugs,Danette http://nenscl.blogspot.com

Germany

A couple years ago I went with my high school german club to Germany for two weeks and out of everything i saw i found the Neuschwanstein Castle the most beautiful... especially the view. I would love to go back to Germany one day and revisit all the sites i saw and i recommend anyone who goes to Germany to see this castle... it is amazing.

Germany...

I am becoming more and more interested in Germany the older I get. The castles, the cities - I am fascinated by Berlin, I have to admit. And my partner has some long-distant Germanic heritage, so we have the perfect excuse to venture forth. Since we will have done France and Italy this year, perhaps next year we can do France and Germany. You see the recurring theme here? Paris! Beautiful, amazing Paris...

was there a winner for this

was there a winner for this post?

Euri won

It was in a separate post. Hope this helps you out. ani
