Beaches and Books

Samantha Hunter's picture

Summer is here; maybe not officially re: the calendar, but the hot weather took hold here in the Northeast for the past week. Fans and air conditioners have been whirring, lawns are being mowed, and gardens watered. Cold drinks sweat on their coasters, and lawn chairs are pulled out of the basement. Finally, we can use our grill every night if we want; meals are simple, produce is in season. Our rhubarb is about wilted, but our beachblack raspberries are promising. It hit near 90 here this weekend, high humidity, and while it’s cooling down for the week ahead, I’m heading to Florida to bask in the sunshine for our tenth wedding anniversary, a mini-honeymoon of sorts, just me, Mike, books, and a beach.

Anyone who knows me knows I love summer and hot weather. I love writing summer books, too. Only one of my books so far, Virtually Perfect, has a traditional winter setting. Even my upcoming Christmas book, Talking in Your Sleep (Blaze, Dec ’07), is set in a heatwave in Southern California. Hot books, hot weather, how can I go wrong? All of the books I’m working on now – a summer Blaze anthology story for 2008, a Blaze proposal for 2008, and a single title paranormal – are set in the heavy heat of July and August, and it’s when I feel I can do my best writing.

Summer is also the best for reading, especially on a beach. Here’s my vacation reading list:

booksSarah Mayberry Hot For Him
Kay Stockham His Perfect Woman
Julie Kenner The Prada Paradox
Charlaine Harris All Together Dead
And, if I can fit it in, JD Robb’s Born in Death

I'm developing a ritual of reading Sarah any time I fly, she keeps me distracted from the unnatural act of being 36,000 feet above the ground, which attests to how good her books are, as that's not an easy task. I’m finishing up Jamie’s Extreme Blaze Call Me Wicked tonight (great story!), and have Tawny’s Double Dare on tap. Come to think of it, maybe Double Dare will find it’s way on the plane as well.... I’ll need another good book to distract me on the plane trip back!

The rest of my summer TBR, in no particular order, is:

Megan Hart’s Broken, C.E. Murphy’s Coyote Dreams, Cynthia Reese’s The Baby Wait, Carrie Alexander’s The Ready Made Family, Karina Bliss, Mr. Irresistible, Kate Austin’s Last Night at the Half Moon, Mary Anne Wilson’s Allegra’s Homecoming, Eileen Wilks’s Bloodlines, Charlene Teglia’s Wild, Wild West, Annie West’s The Greek’s Convenient Mistress, Bronwyn Jameson’s Back in Fortune’s Bed, Cindi Meyer’s Fear of Falling, Joanne Rock’s Don’t Look Back, Laura Resnick’s Disappearing Nightly… and who knows what will be added to the pile as new books appear.

There are several new Blazes I want to get, Lisa Renee Jones’s debut in August, and Karen Foley’s upcoming book. Oh, and Sydney Croft’s Riding the Storm, among a throng of autumn books that will come later. I think Rachel Caine has another Weather Warden book I’ll seek out, as well, and waiting on new books from Patricia Briggs, my new addiction.

birdJust for fun, here's a picture of a rose-breasted grosbeak who parked on my feeder for a few days, though he's moved on now. Another summer treasure. Even better, how about the bare-chested men of Blaze? Take a peek to the right and see what I'm talking about -- yowsa! How can we not love summer?

Do you all look forward to summer as much as I do? What are your favorite things about summer? What’s in your summer reading pile? Are there any books or events you are looking forward to in particular?

I’ll be away from Wed 6/6-Sun 6/10 and unable to respond here on the blog, but share your summer thoughts with me and I’ll spring for one pre-ordered copy of my August Blaze Forbidden Fantasy, Pick Me Up for one lucky blogger to add to his or her summer reading pile. Since I won’t have a chance to sign it (it will come to you from the bookseller as soon as it’s available), I’ll mail along some signed book plates along with a few Florida goodies that I’ll buy on vacation, just for you! Remember, you have to be a registered user here at Cigars to qualify.

I'll be around today and tomorrow, but have a great week, everyone! Sam

Summertime

Happy Anniversary! I hope you enjoy your trip. I am looking forward to some days on the beach with a good book. All the authors on this blog would make a great beach read and I always enjoy a Carly Phillips book for a day on the beach.

Thanks, Maureen. :) Carly is

Thanks, Maureen. :) Carly is so fun and upbeat. It's true though, that reading on the beach makes any book better. ;)

Summer fun

Sam-- Happy Anniversary! Hope you enjoy your trip. I plan on lots of reading this summer. Also, we are leaving on the 23rd to drive to Arkansas to visit my parents who moved there (and took the other sisters with them) last summer. We will stay there until August 1. My daughter will be 9 on the 10th so, we are having a little get together w/the inlaws this weekend. I got her 8 books and a bible for her birthday. She takes after her mommy and is an avid reader. She reads all the time. The books are part of a Christian series similiar to the American Girl series. I got her the fist one at thanksgiving time and she LOVED it. Part of me wishes we were not going out of town, because there are so many things I would like to accomplish this summer. Such as: the kids learnign to swim before they are too old, taking them to super summer theatre (out door theatre, painting my bathrooms, re-doing my bedroom, fixing up the outside of my house, and doing facials to where I can earn some money for the summer. Support Staff does not get paid over the summer. Oh well, the Lord will provide. One of the fun things is in the small town my mom lives in the kids and I go to the Library alot. We never really go while we are at home. We live near downtown Vegas, have you ever seen cops? yea, not really conductive to a safe library environment if you don't drive a good 12-15 miles to the hoity toity library and at the price of gas--who can afford that? Well, I guess my response has almost turned into a blog itself--hope you don't get bored reading it. To all the summer travelers--have a safe journey and make memories to last a lifetime. Debbie

Sounds busy!

Debbie, sounds like you have a lot going on! It's great that you're raising your kids as readers. :)

And yes, as to finances, I'm a deep believer in money as karmic, it all works in cycles, coming in and out (sometimes more one than the other!) in life, but it balances out eventually.

Happy travels to you, too.

Sam

Happy Anniversary!

I hope you have a lovely time at the beach. Sun and a hot hubby, how could you not? We still haven't made any concrete plans for the summer. The weather here in the Pacific Northwest has changed for the better. We were in the 80s this weekend. I love the NW for the long days we have in early summer. It's still light until 9 pm. And our sunsets are spectacular. Every summer, I pick an author and try to make it through their entire list of books. And then there are the fun reads (Blazes and Nexts) that I pick up when I go shopping. This summer I think the author might be Deborah Smith. But I have Jamie's Call Me Wicked (and I want the new Men at Work) on my TBR also. I just finished Sarah's latest. I also am waiting on Charlaine Harris's new one. Sam, have you read her first, non-series book, "Sweet and Deadly"? It was interesting because her voice has stayed true. We live near the water but it's not a "beach" so I know we'll go at least for a long weekend. I need my beach time. I've been collecting beach glass for a long time but need some more. ani

Nice tradition

I like that summer reading tradition. I try new authors, but hadn't thought of buying one and reading their whole list. Though sometimes, like with Harris, I buy one and then have to go get the rest of them right away.

I don't think I did ever read Sweet and Deadly, though -- I have read all the Shakespeare and Grave books so far. I think her voice and style are consistent, even across those. I love that whole southern gothic style, and I have you to thank for turning me on to Patricia Briggs as well.

Your long summer days sound amazing...we might get light until 830-9, but it's more dusky, and that's at the height of the summer. I always feel so sad when the days shorten -- we should come live by you. Do you mind? ;)

Sam

Need the real estate ads??

I'd love it if you moved here. I should point out though that our winter days are as short as our summer days are long. The only thing that makes commuting both directions in the dark during the winter tolerable are the Christmas lights people put up. It may not be my holiday, but I appreciate the lights!

Sam

Happy Anniversary! Hope you have fun on your trip. We probably won't do much this summer, cause we just bought a house last summer& spent 6 months remodeling it. And this July my 10 yr old has summer school, plus 2 of his little buddies.

I hear ya

That's the rest of our summer, too, remodeling and working on the house. I don't mind, I'm happy to get the projects done, but this will be our vacation until maybe next winter or spring. I don't mind, I like being here in the warm seasons, it's winter I hate. Really hate winter.

Sam

Thanks for the wishes :)

I have to admit, it's nice being with someone for that long, and you can look back and see all the things you remember, good and bad, ups and downs, but then also there's a point where you're together long enough that you also forget a lot, LOL.

I always wonder about the people who reach their 75th anniversary and things like that; it's just cool, to be with one person for that long. I love it. I don't think we can make that number, since we met in our 30s, but maybe we can grab 50. That would be nice. :)

Sam

We've only seen a few teases

We've only seen a few teases of summer where I am. Today it was in the sixties and raining. Tomorrow looks like the same. I like it when the temperatures are in the eighties. Otherwise, my makeup melts off my face. lol Just kidding. It's too humid here when it's in the nineties. I love summertime so I can finally open up the house after the long, cold winter. I love to take walks by the beach and also sit and read. I like to sit on the screen porch and listen to the birds chirp. Oh, and vacation. I always get at least one summer vacation. I have some of the same books as you do on my summer reading list.

Oh yes, open windows...

I have to have windows open as soon as the weather warms up. I don't care how hot, how muggy, the windows are open during the day. I hate being closed up all winter. The deal we have, because Mike doesn't enjoy the intense heat quite as much as I do, is that we have the windows open, and use fans during the day, and then at night we have a one-room AC to keep cool at night. We have central air, but I don't use it because I don't want the windows all closed up.

Sam

Pick Me Up

Just to let you guys know, there's back cover copy and a short excerpt from Pick Me Up on my website now, if you want to take a peek (the link is in the left sidebar on this page, just click my name). I'm very psyched about this book!

Sam

I'm looking forward to summer...

being over and the cool breeze of autumn, lol I do like summer, I really do, it's just that summer here in Houston can be so hot and humid, eek. It is nice getting to go to the pool, though :) As for my summer reading, I plan on reading the books I bought at the RT convention. A few are; How to Conjure a Man by Nancy Lindquist, Cracked: Prelude to Passion by Ruby Storm, re-reading Cutting Loose by Lise Fuller, The Agency by JJ Massa, Wicked Ties by Shayla Black, Devotion Calls by Caridad Pinero, and many others :) ~Ali http://simplyali.blogspot.com

Sounds good to me!

That's a nice reading list, and I've always wanted to come to Texas -- one of these days. :) I know, there is a point where it can be too hot -- I even have a breaking point, though it's pretty high, LOL. We went desert hiking last Sept, and it was about 98 but very dry, and I really liked it. Here, last summer, we had a few days in the 100s, but it was also extremely high humidity -- I don't think people believe how how Central New York can get until they experience it, but my husband lived in Florida, and sometimes he can't see a difference, LOL. But I actually don't mind that -- I might not like it if it were day on end, never ending, but for the few days we get it, it's different and it's a treat.

The two things I DON'T like about summer are mosquitoes and thunder storms -- I hate lightning.

Sam

SUMMERTIME

I love summer. Everything about summer. Especially the clear blue skies and the intense sunshine. The evenings are clear and cool down and there are no bugs where I live. It is heavenly. We will be home all summer and perhaps will be able to take a trip in the fall which is fine. I will be reading a variety of books, mystery, romance. The Wedding Officer by Anthony Capella, Lost and Found by Jacqueline SHeehan, Between The Tides by Patti Callahan Henry.

SUMMER AND THE LIVING IS EASY

I am a summer person and have always appreciated this time of year. I walk, bike and just sit outside in the backyard and read and relax. I feel soothed by the warmth and beauty of the tranquil surroundings. I would love to travel but probably have to wait until September. When I did spend time at the seashore which I loved it was memorable. I will read wonderful novels, historical and comtemporary. Water Like a Stone by Deborah Crombie and Francesca's Kitchen by Peter Pezzelli. Also a new one by Deborah Smith, Crossroads Cafe.

BEST OF SUMMER

I always anticipate summer which is my favorite season and has always been. Long days and beautiful, relaxing summer nights spent gazing at the spectacular sunsets which we have each and every night. Maybe we will take a trip for a week or so to the beach which I adore. Lounge and read at the beach. Nothing could be better. I love reading and watching the waves. I plan to read lots this summer. Owl Island by Randi Sue Coburn, Any Bitter Thing by Monica Wood and Spirited Away by Cindi Miles to name a few.

SUMMER SURPRISE

Summer represents everything to me. It is special and awesome especially where I am living now. Dry,sunny climate, sensational setting, perfect combo. I do miss the ocean though and try to spend a little time each summer. I crave the contrast between where I live and the ocean. I love the walks on the beach and the sand between my toes. I take a huge bag of books and read all of them. Ideal for me. The Virgin of Small Plains ny Nancy Pickard is the first on my list. After that I intend to read Simply Love by Mary Balogh and Farewell Summer by Ray Bradbury. I can hardly wait.

Hi Sam

I love summer and after the bad winter we had this year,I look foward to the lazy days of summer. I love being able to take long walks in the woods behind my house which I would never attempt to do in the winter months. I have already read Sarah, Jamie and Tawnys books and, I can assure you that you're going to love them. I'm waiting for Karen and your new books to be released. I'll be getting them as soon as they are released. I can't wait to read them. I just finished the last book in Linda Conrads Night Guardian series and I'm waiting for the final book in the series to be released. Born in Death will be started tonight and I still have several Nocturn books on my TBR pile. Hubby broke the gas grill a few days ago so, as soon as I get a replacement grill, I'll be having weekend barbecues with some of our friends. Possibly a few get togethers with my sons band members for weekend cookouts and jam sessions. I'm sure my neighbors will love that. NOT!!! It should be a fun summer if hubby don't break another grill. Hubbys boss is having his yearly Pig Roast on Fathers Day and that's always a good time. Have a great vacation. Relax and enjoy yourself. Happy Anniversary. Mads:)

Mads, you're a wonder!

I've been reading about 2 a week recently, and have the 4-5 planned for the weekend, and who knows if I'll actually get through them, but we'll see. I will read Born in Death, and we'll have to compare notes (of course, all of you who know me from Adwoff, we were all Nora fans to start with, and here we all are now! :)

I'm getting some good new book ideas. ;)

I love hearing everyone's summer plans -- forgive me for not replying to all the posts today, I'm in and out and running some errands, but I hope you'll all keep chatting while I'm gone. :)

Sam

LOVING SUMMER

Warmth and summer is when I thrive. Have always been a summer person and enjoy being out in the garden, walking and the seaside. I remember the first time that I experienced the ocean and it made an indelible mark upon me. I hope that we will spend time this summer since I miss it. Books which are waiting for me this summer are Everything Changes by Jonathan Tropper, Yhe Way The Crow Flies by Ann-Marie MacDonald, Crimson Portrait by Jody Fields, and Queen of Broken Hearts by Cassandra King. Long, juicy novels that last forever.

Summer

I have a nice pile of books to read for the summer and hopefully will get some time to enjoy them. Hubby and I are leaving Friday to spend a few days with my family in SW Florida. My sister and my mom will also be watching our two little ones for us on our anniversary so we can stay a night at a bed and breakfast. I am looking forward to our romantic evening. June 30th our eldest son will turn 4 and we will have a party for him. We also have a club picnic to go to in June so June will be a month of fun for us. No plans for July or August yet but that can change at anytime.

Happy Anniversary to you, too!

We'll be celebrating down in the same part of the world -- I hope you have a wonderful time. I'm having bad "vacationitis" today -- I'm trying to write, but my brain is already on vacation... ;)

Sam

Summer

I look forward to sleeping in during summer.I'm the one who has to get up everyday to take the kids to school.Their vacation stars next week and so does mine*g* We'll be getting as much beach time as possible,I love reading on the beach with the waves as my natural music. Happy Anniversary to you and your DH Sam.*g* Hugs,Danette http://nenscl.blogspot.com

summer

I love summer its my favorite time of year. My birthday is June 14th my wedding anniversay is June 7 I love the smell of roses and honeysuckle, I look forward to going to the beach or just somewhere for vacation and spending time with the kids

Hi Beth

Happy Belated Anniversary and Happy Early Birthday. I hope you enjoy both of these days doing everything that you love to do. Mads:)

Summer

I love Summer. My favorite things about summer are bbq's, going fishing and swimming, getting a tan, and wearing shorts, capris and sandals. I am looking forward to the last Harry Potter novel, Scent of Darkness by Christina Dodd, Lady Be Bad by Candice Hern and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter novel, The Devil May Cry coming out in August.

Summer

Hi, Sam - hope you had a great "honeymoon" in Florida! My summer loves: short skirts and tank tops, iced drinks at Starbucks, sunshine and the particularly vivid shade of green it turns the leaves in the heat of the day. Early morning trips to the park with my son, and afternoon nap-time snuggled with DH, sometimes napping, sometimes not. ;) Actually...that's the best thing about summer for me...no covers necessary for adult activities! What can I say? I'm not really much of an outdoorsy type, I sunburn easily, and I really prefer fall and spring.

SUMMER FUN

Summer is the most meaningful season to me. It has always been cherished and treasured since I can spend it as I please. Sit outside on the deck and read all day long, take leisurely walks by the ocean, lounge at the seashore and read, or travel to far off places with my exotic novels. Summer is irresistible. Staying with friends at their cottage on a lake and spending days on the dock reading, boating and then walking every evening with the scent of pine and clear air in your lungs. I just love it.

Summertime

I love summer, look forward to the wonderful weather and usually this is when I take my vacation. Love to work on my tan and get in plenty of swimming. This is also when I get to work on my TBR pile that is steadily growing bigger. Spend alot of time with family and friends. We also do alot of cooking out.

I'm the odd one out here

Summer just is not my cup of tea. I am not a fan of hot weather. I would be happy if the temps stayed at 70 all year round. The heat just saps my energy. Summer is also the worst time for my daughter's allergies (trees, grass, weeds) and asthma, so it is better for her health-wise to have the A/C instead of open windows. We still manage to have them open for a short time to air the house out a little, though. But I did want to wish you and your husband a Happy 10th Anniversary! Enjoy your little vacation together and get plenty of fun and relaxation in!

would love to read leslie

would love to read leslie kelly new books and tori carrington.

Love to Read in Summer

I love to read int he summer. The problem? I'm writing this summer, which means romance is out (I don't read my genre when I'm writing my genre) so I'm reading lots of thrillers and horror and other non-romance this summer. Just finished some Harlan Coben and Dean Koontz, have the new Tabatha King I've been working on, and some other similar books on my shelf waiting to be read. I've just got a steady stream of books in my bag for the pool and bedside becaues of the longer days and less kid activities, which gives me more time to do ME things :-)

Thrillers

Shirley, I just bought and read five, yes five of Karin Slaughter's Grant County series. I read the 3rd one a few months ago and could not get it off my mind so I went to an actual bookstore this weekend and picked up the other five. I would highly recommend this series for you this summer. Debbie
