Are you a dirty writer?
I'm a dirty writer.
I don't just mean that I wrote a book called Dirty or that I write "dirty" books. I mean when I sit down to write, I write dirty. Not always fast, but most often sloppy, at least the first time around.
The book I'm working on now, for example, features several points of view and parts of the story are told in memories. I'm not writing it in the order it will finally appear -- so I'm writing an out-of-order story out of order.
Dirty.
I have typos, grammar problems, time line issues (lots of 'em) and I still haven't decided the outcome of a couple key plot points, nor how to get to the end of a couple others.
Dirty.
I changed my hero's name midway through the book and haven't gone back to change it in the beginning yet. Ditto with the names of several other characters.
Dirty!
I considering killing off a main character and having his story told via flashback, but probably won't because I like him too much.

And finally -- it's a story that took me by the hand and led me down the path, even though it's the story that I shouldn't be writing now. It probably has a home, but it might not, and I'm working on it while knowing there are books that DO have a home going unwritten (though not in danger of being late for deadline.) I'm writing this story because it compelled me to, and because I really believe in it, but I had to know if I could write it, if it would come out the way I imagined it, before I proposed it to my editor.
Dirty.

I don't know if I'm a dirty writer (except in that sense you mention, writing dirty, LOL), b/c I edit as I go, and very rarely will write out of order (almost never) though I have done fast drafts when the spirit moves and those need A LOT of fixing later -- so those are pretty dirty, but even with those I kind of need the logic and a lot of things to be working just so I can keep going.
As far as keeping track of things, I'm horrible, LOL -- that's probably where I am not only dirty, but muddy. I have to be really careful in edits to know that I have hair/eyes/names straight, especially when I am working on more than one book at a time. I forget characters' names and have to go back and check (definitely dirty) and I don't hesitate to chop off huge chunks of writing if I think they aren't working, as much as three chapters or more in the past, no matter how hard I worked on them (I think that's dirty, no?)
But I'm also hyper-organized in some ways, and the norm is that my finished first draft is a polished one, so I may only qualify as dusty or maybe a little gritty? *G*
So, off to get dirty... :)

Hi, Megan! I'm not a writer, but I'd imagine that being a dirty writer is sometimes the way to go--just get the story out there, onto the screen or paper. Then once it's down, you can go back to clean and polish :)
As for dirty books as a reader, I think that I'd find a sloppily edited book irritating, but I wouldn't mind being a copy editor and fixing them--I just wouldn't want to have paid money for a book expecting it to be a finished work and then find mistakes that would just irk me. ;p And uh, yes, I do like the other kind of dirty books ;)
