Please allow me to introduce myself...

authorm's picture

I'm not a man, my wealth is mostly non-financial and taste, well...taste is in the eye of the beholder.**

I'm Megan Hart, and I'm brand spanking new here at Love Is An Exploding Cigar!

Some of you I know, some of you I do not, so I thought I'd get started by sharing some facts about me.

Please don't call me Meg. It makes my lip curl.
My hair is naturally blue and purple, but I sometimes color it a strange color like red or brown.
I can't bend my right thumb and haven't been able to since birth.
I love to sing Karaoke.

There. Now I feel much better. :)

I was pondering what I'd write for my very first blog entry, and believe me, I was wittier in my head when I was in bed, trying to fall asleep. I really need to remember to keep a pad and pen by the bed and learn to write in the dark. Seriously.

So I was thinking how, in real life, I'm not particularly gloomy (though I have my share of emo angst and roller-coaster emotion), but that my three releases from Spice have been...shall we say...

A little dark?

Tempted, in particular has some pretty deep, dark moments. It's a personal book on many levels, but then, all of them are. And when I was done, I felt I'd purged myself of some themes and elements I'd used already, and wouldn't have to use again.

Which left me wondering what on earth I was going to find to write about?

I discovered a new wealth of inspiration and emotion and themes and elements, don't worry. (I know you were!) So my next round of books will be different, but similar.

I just don't write humor, I guess, even if in MY real life I laugh a lot.

How about you all? Does your reading (or writing) reflect the sort of person you are in real life? Or do you seek books that take you to places you'd never go on your own?

Glad to be here, everyone!

Oh, and don't forget, you can check out my free read The Road Taken is now up and ready to be read! For FREEEEEEEEE!

**with hats off to The Rolling Stones for their inspirational lyrics...

Welcome Megan!

It's so fun to have you here. :)

I think the themes of your books have been dark, but they are also incredibly optimistic. I know I've told you that before, but it's what grabs me most of all. Well, that and loads of really sexy sex. ;)

As a reader and TV audience, I think I probably seek the kinds of things I don't write, very funny or somewhat dark/dramatic. I don't like very explicit violence, but I like psychological or emotional explorations, stories that take me to deep places with the characters. I'm willing to go into dark places with them, as long as that's not all there is -- so, your books do that, so do shows like Buffy or The Closer. I guess there has to be a reason and something compelling and relatable about the dark themes for me for them to work. And I want that undercurrent of optimism, you know? It won't be dark forever.

As a writer, I don't think I go to many dark places at all...well, if Margaret reads this, she may disagree with me because of Fascination, but in general I think I keep things emotional but fairly light. I've been working on a paranormal proposal for what seems like forever, and I feel like I simply can't force myself to go too dark. I sort of wish I could, but my imagination doesn't take me that way.

Sam

Aww, thanks Sam. Dark, but

Aww, thanks Sam. Dark, but optimistic. Yeah. I agree. :)

NOT laugh out loud funny -- and I'm not saying I'm funny, but I am a huge, goofy dork.

I could go much darker in my fiction though, and have, in some unpubbed work. I've actually held myself back, thinking, Nope, too dark. That won't fly.

LOL, Sam!

I don't disagree with you! FASCINATION wasn't so much as dark as...well...that's the subject of another barrage of emails. ;)

Megan, I definitely prefer to read other than what I write. Lately I've been experimenting with reading out of genre to expand my vocabulary for both word and metaphor, and prime the pump. Too much in-genre reading and I can't drown out the other voices in my head to work on my own stuff. I also don't go dark, although I find what little I read that is dark tends to stick with me longer.

Hi Megan!

Welcome to Cigars!

And it's too funny because my books don't reflect my in-person person as much, or at least not who I was when I started writing them (okay, that makes NO sense!). When I first started selling romantic comedies, I was SO not funny in person. My own husband doesn't laugh at my jokes ;-). My kids think I'm pitifully unfunny. I can be funny when I do a speech, but I had to cultivate that and learn to be funny. On paper, I'm a different person than in real life, I think.

And I LOVE the cover of Tempted :-)

BTW -- I keep a light-up pen (they sell them at Bed, Bath & Beyond) that you click and a light comes on at the tip, and a pad at my bedside. I write a lot in the middle of the night!

Not All, but a lot...

I remember a long time ago, a really nice editor said she loved my voice but that I would have to pick between comedy and dark toned drama. That there just wasn't room for both in a single line. (This was about ten years ago now, so there weren't any nice places like Nocturne to submit my dark humor) I'm a firm believer that it's better to laugh through the bad times than whine and cry and that definitely shows in my books. I do try to tone the humor down a little in the dramas. But I definitely wouldn't hold my breath that it's gone. :)

I think humor can add a lot to a drama -- just like in real life. I just haven't found that I am LOL funny in my fiction, when in real life...well...like I said. BIG DORK.

Welcome, Megan

I write the way I am. I live my life making asides, and I write my characters that way, too.

Megan, I love your cover. My husband loves your cover. Come payday (the holidays hit hard, lol) I'm ordering so many books and Tempted is at the top of the list.

What was that?

Did someone say 'hot hunks'? I love me some hot men! "Researching" cover models (to better visualize, of course) is my favorite part of writing. I swear, I spend way more time doing that some days (okay, MOST days) than I do actually getting words on the page.

WELCOME TO CIGARS, MEGAN! Love your work and can't wait to read more! :)

Glad you're here, Megan!

I've been admiring your covers, especially the one for Tempted!

I think mostly I read other than what my life is--it's a great escape! I'm not too sure I'd enjoy reading about nagging, laundry, dishes, homework struggles, diapers, and trying to figure out what to make for dinner! Actually, I'm sure there are very entertaining books about all those things out there, but at the moment, I like to think of books as a sort of Calgon, without the bubbles and the bathtub ;)

*going to check out The Road Taken...*

LOL, yeah, it's hard to make

LOL, yeah, it's hard to make diapers sexy.

Sometimes I think I write what I'd like *most* to happen. Other times, it's what I *fear* most will happen...

Woo wooo...woo wooo

I started singing the backup lyrics when I read your title. :-)

MEGAN! I haven't chatted with you in ages. I was thinking about you the other day when I saw your post card for Dirty. Love the pic on your site. Although, I don't think it shows off the blue-ness of your hair. Is your hair purple in the Vlog?

Oh, I guess I should comment on the blog you posted here. I'm always much wittier in my head. I'm only funny about once a month.

I always wondered how a person's bookshelf reflects their personality. My shelves have mostly mysteries, ghost stories and a smattering of smut. My main argument for going outside my genres is good writing. If it is well written, almost any book is readable.

Hmmm...right now it's blue

I read a lot of sf and f and horror! LOOOOOVE horror. But I don't know that I'd try to publish in horror.

Welcome Megan

I promise not to call you Meg. I'm still trying to picture you with blue and purple hair. Individual and different. I think I like you already and I'm definitely looking forward to blogging with you.

I read your book Dirty. For the first 3 chapters, I didn't think that I would like the story but, as I read on, I got hooked. I couldn't put the book down. I actually lost sleep because, I couldn't wait to see what would happen in the next chapter. I fell a little in love with Dan. You did a great job of handling issues that most authors are afraid to write about. I will definitely be reading more of your books.

Since I read anything that I can get my hands on, I don't think that my reading reflects the person that I am. I just love to read. As for my writing, I think that it depends on what I'm writing. On blogs and such, I am definitely myself but, when I'm writing stories, it's total fiction.

I'm so glad you are blogging with us, and I look forward to getting to know you. Mads:)

Hey, Mads! :) Nice to meet

Hey, Mads! :) Nice to meet you, too. I'm glad you stuck with Dirty. I've had so many comments about Dan. He really seems to resonate with women...I've had lots of questions about if my husband is the inspiration for my heroes and I always say, particularly about Dan, if there was something you loved about him, that was based on my husband. If there was something you didn't like, that was based on him, too.

Haha!

And yet, he's not really based on my husband, other than they're both good guys. (In my head, Dan looks an awful lot like Ewan McGregor, who couldn't be farther away in looks from my husband!)

I've had other people say they can't believe a guy like Dan is real. He was "too good." I feel a little sad for anyone who thinks a guy like Dan can't/doesn't exist. He might not be based directly on the man I married, but good guys really do exist. Really, truly good men who are still sexy and kind and caring do exist. And anyone who doesn't think they do...that's sad.

Same here...

At first I wasn't sure Dirty was going to be for me, either. Not because it wasn't good (it was great!), but because it was my first full-length erotic and it was darker than I was used to--sexy, flirty Blaze is my norm. But once I got used to it, I lost much sleep over it, too. And cry? OMG...I cried like a baby reading that.

Now, I loved Dan. But Jack did more than a little somethin' for me, too. ;)

Hey, Sassa, you wanna know a

Hey, Sassa, you wanna know a secret?

...Jack did more than a little something for me, too. :) He's based on someone I met in real life -- only briefly, never even knew his real name, but whoooooo hooo ,that boy was purrrrty.

Jack shows up again in my upcoming release from Spice, Stranger (which won't be out until 09) because I just thought he was so much fun to write.

I'm sorry I made you cry. Sort of. :) I mean, I don't like to make people cry but if it's because my book moved you, that's very flattering and I'm honored to to have made you weep.

My books seem to hit a chord with people or leave them cold. I don't think of my Spice's as "romance" particularly, and I guess some people are really looking for that romance feel or ending or whatever. So I'm glad you gave it a chance and enjoyed it.

I would love to write a Blaze! Sexy, flirty, fun -- not so dark, maybe. A little shorter (I have a fantasy of finishing a book much faster than my norm, though I know I probably wouldn't, LOL!) Something still sexy but different than Spice. Problem is, I just don't have any ideas for a Blaze right now.

Sigh.
