To the coffee shop? Or not to the coffee shop?

authorm's picture

THAT is the question!

A long time ago, in a life time far away, when my children were small and I had no time but nap-time for writing, I had never been to a coffee shop. Heck, I didn't even drink coffee. I wrote in small, hour long snatches of time and I day dreamed about the day when I'd be able to write more.

Well, the kids grew as they often do if you insist on feeding them, and even when number two came along, I was still writing regularly, if not in long stretches. Number one went to preschool and number two sometimes napped at the same time. I still didn't drink coffee.

And then...it happened Number one went to kindergarten and number two went to preschool and...I still only had a couple hours to write and it took too long to get home (I live in the middle of nowhere, man) so I started going to a local coffee shop to write while he was in preschool.

Wow! Talk about productivity! I wrote more in those two hours than I had ever managed at home. And, because they didn't offer unlimited tea and I'm a goldfish, I'll consume until I explode, I started drinking coffee.

I don't like coffee, by the way. I can only stomach it if it's flavored. And the caffeine, instead of hopping me up, a lot of time makes me feel like I need a nap.

But I was addicted. Not to the coffee, but to the coffee shop. To that time. To the music in my iPod (and man, I started before I even got an iPod and had to listen to CD's on a disc player, oh, the barbarism!) keeping out the world so I could build a new one.

The schools changed and so did the coffee shop. The one I liked best closed, but I've found a new one. It's a bit of a drive and with both kids in full time school I don't have to go out any more to find my time. I have it all day long. And yet, I'll admit it. I still get more done at the coffee shop, which has free wireless but I write on an Alphasmart and so I don't get sucked in to the 'net. :) At home there's laundry and bills and all manner of things distracting me.

At the coffee shop they feed me. They provide unlimited coffee. I listen to my iPod and I write and write and write and sometimes I talk too much to the people there who have become friends, but most of the time I write.

So, today...it's gray and gloomy and I went to the coffee shop yesterday, but I think I might go again today. I have this story, you see, that needs to be finished, and if I stay home today I think I'll be too wooed by instant messages and live yahoo web casts and my husband, who's home sick.

But I haven't showered yet and I'm not sure I can rouse myself to go, even though I know I'll be rewarded. So. To the coffee shop? Or not?

Do you have a favorite coffee shop to write in, or read in, or just to visit friends in? Do you like coffee? Do you like iPods? Do you like people bringing you food?

I'll be on later to pop back in and see your answers, but for now, I'm off to the coffeeeeeeeee shop!!!!

You are too funny :)

I'm still in the pre-preschool stages of motherhood (well, one is in school, but there are two more at home yet), so I have yet to experience "the coffee shop", though I imagine, like you, I would get a lot more done there. :) Funny you should post about this this week, because my new AlphaSmart will be here on Thursday! I soooo can't wait to leave the kids with my husband so I can go camp out in a cozy corner of the Moose Jackson Cafe with a huge chai tea, my Alphie, and my mp3 (probably listening to some classic Heart).

Two more days, two more days, two more days...

Sassa, I love my Alphasmart,

Sassa, I love my Alphasmart, seriously! It's done more for my writing than anything, ever!

Definitely coffee shop!

I've just recently started going out one day a week to work in the coffee shop, and I like it a lot. Always productive, and I usually have an iced tea because I don't drink coffee after morning, and I can milk a venti iced tea for a good two hours, LOL. So far I have only gone to bookstore coffee shops because I do research and use them as a library (though I always end up buying something, even if only one book) but there is a nice chain sandwich place, Pannera, that has wireless (though I won't use it likely because I tend not to want to bother to do all the connecting to a new network, so that means I do focus more on work) and a very nice atmosphere, and just for work and/or writing, I will maybe try there next week. Then I can have lunch instead of just iced tea. :)

Sam, my coffee shop makes

Sam, my coffee shop makes lunch, too. ;) And it's good!

Definitely Coffee Shop

When the weather's good I walk to Starbucks to justify the chocolate grahams, but my favorite place is about a 15 min drive away. It's local, it's really grimy and filled with college students and hipsters and the owner is a total crank, but I love the atmosphere. Not sure if I'm more productive there or at home, LOL, but I feel more positive in general when I go.

Don't like coffee unless it's in a latte with some peppermint to boot. Love iPods - I'm a podcast freak, LOL. And I really love people bringing me food!

Ooh, a peppermint latte!

Ooh, a peppermint latte! Yum! I usually just get the coffee of the day that's flavored, but at home I have some good syrups to add. Of course, I don't drink coffee at home! haha!

Coffee Shop sounds good to me...

Though I understand the 'I haven't showered, do I have the energy to even do it' mentality. I wish I had a coffee shop closer to me. I'd be haunting it at least twice a week (when every child in my household is in school). :)

I have to drive 15 minutes

I have to drive 15 minutes to get to mine, but...it's so worth it. I was really worried when the one I loved went out of business. Where would I gooooooo!!!!!!????

Thankfully I found a new place.

I miss my "coffeeshop"...

I'm definitely one of those obsessive people who is clouded by what I have to do and what I want to do. I lived across the street from a breakfast shop, so I would take my son to his bus stop at 720. By 730, I was at a table, drinking tea and writing. I stayed til 1030, M-F, writing. It was the most wonderful writing time I ever had and it worked great for about 9 months.

Then I moved.

I thought, I can make my own tea. Set aside the time and stick to it.

That didn't work real well. Then I got pregnant and it didn't work at all. I long for my coffeeshop, lol. I figure, in another three years, when the girls go to pre-school, I'll have a coffeeshop back. Even if I have to move to find one, lol.

Definitely go to the shop. Just so I can live vicariously. :)
Dee

Okay, Dee, I went. Just for

Okay, Dee, I went. Just for you! ;)

And I wrote...a lot...not sure how many pages, but a lot.

I love coffee. I'm a night

I love coffee. I'm a night owl and it helps me stay up to all hours. I wish I had a coffee shop near by or an excuse to use one lol. So instead I have my own grinder and my favorite is a hazelnut hawaiin blend. I like the socialization of coffee. My one daughter and her boyfriend join me all the time but my other daughter and her finance don't touch it. It's like we're missing some kind of bonding together! That being said, I'm just getting over the flu and I lost my taste for coffee which is amazing since that hasn't happened since I was pregnant with each of my daughters. (and no that's not a possibility lol)

Yeah, the socialization is

Yeah, the socialization is nice. But when I'm at the coffee shop, I have to NOT be socializing, because it's work time! Everyone around me is chatting, having fun, I'm slaving away...

Sounds like it's a go!

I'm not a coffee-shop devotee, but I do really like the idea--the cozy place to set up and work, the delicious smell of coffee (not much of a coffee drinker, but it does smell so yummy!), convenient access to food and restroom... And honestly, I'd love to be somewhere where people bring me food :) Sign me up! (Although I do understand that getting out of one's jammies would pose a bit of a deterrent to me...)

well, some days I don't make

well, some days I don't make it out of the house just because I don't feel like getting dressed. :)

Hi Megan!

I would like to open a coffee shop--especially after reading your post. They are my favorite places. There is a small family owned one near where my son lives, and I love to go there and just soak up the ambience. It's more productive for me to work in a coffee shop than in a bookstore, where I tend to want to shop when I hit a rough patch.

Great topic!

I always thought I'd like to

I always thought I'd like to open a coffee shop. But then I'd have to actually WORK in the coffee shop, and not writing!

Coffee shop!

I love spending time in unique coffee shops! To read, or visit, or eat, or whatever. I love the ambiance of one that feels comfortable. I had a favorite one, then I graduated and moved for a job. Hubby & I found one we loved.....they closed. Found another....he closed. Now, we're afraid to try anymore. But there is one downtown we'll stop at when we're downtown for something. We don't make it a destination because we're afraid that as soon as we do, they will close!!

I detest coffee, but I love the smell. I enjoy hot cocoa and tea - especially chai!

I like my iPod in certain situations...like on airplanes. I don't really use it except for that.

Yes, I like people bringing me food!! Especially if I had nothing to do with making it! Now, mind you, I love to cook. But sometimes, it is nice to be 'catered' to. :-)

I have been drinking coffee

I have been drinking coffee for 50 years. I love it.
Sad to say, I live in a very small town on the west coast and it is seventy miles to the nearest coffee shop with wireless internet.
