You went where?

And did what?

With who?

Okay, so that was my mom’s reaction to the writing of The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers. And I have to give her a break. She is a mom. Besides, research for The Dangerous Book was, well, slightly unusual.

35639713.jpgIt’s not my fault. Honest. I mean what would you do if you had to research Las Vegas from the point of view of a bunch of biker witches? Oh and a preschool teacher turned demon slayer.

See, when I was writing the end of my first book, The Accidental Demon Slayer, this joke about Las Vegas popped into my head and I thought, “why not?” Lizzie is just about to kiss her man when she’s interrupted and told she and the gang have to head to Las Vegas to save her long lost uncle from marrying a succubus. Kind of fun. At least it made me smile. I was an unpublished writer at the time.

But then the book sold. Better still, The Accidental Demon Slayer hit the New York Times bestseller list. All of the sudden, I had this big responsibility to get it right. Good thing I like odd adventures. And my friends do too.

One in particular – my friend Aileen – is a sucker for anything strange and unusual. So I talked her into a long weekend and we headed to Vegas to see and experience the biker witch version of Sin City. We stayed in the cheesiest hotels we could find. We ate at Bob’s Big Boy. We even visited a dude ranch with armadillos, a boar and several very old chickens.

We were able to talk our way into some behind-the-scenes places as well. The climax of The Accidental Demon Slayer takes place inside the Hoover Dam, and we were lucky enough to be invited to see first-hand what I’d be writing about. A guide took us far down into the inspection tunnels they used in the 1930’s and 40’s, when the cement was still curing. It was amazing to see the notes these inspectors made on the walls, to hear the stories of those that didn’t quite make it out and to walk the same old metal steps that they did. All of that made it into The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers, along with lots of things I had a blast making up (this is fiction after all).

To continue the fun, I’ve developed a highly un-scientific Are You Part Demon Slayer? quiz . Post your score below and enter to win a copy of The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers.

Here’s a quick description if you want to use it somewhere:

Accidental demon slayer Lizzie Brown and her grandma’s coven of biker witches have rolled into Sin City to take out a super-sexy succubus who has her eye on world domination – and worse, Lizzie’s man.

Welcome!

Hey Angie, welcome back! I am only 61% demon slayer as it turns out, LOL, but that sounds about right.

The book looks amazing, and congrats on your NYT Bestseller! That has to be a thrill. I am always amazed at the inventiveness of your stories...but it sounds like you have a pretty exciting life as well. ;)

Looking forward to the discussion today,

Thanks, Sam! I'm excited to

Thanks, Sam! I'm excited to be here. And I have to say I'm impressed - you're more than half demon slayer. Who knew? We may need to recruit you for the next book. You know Lizzie and the gang will be going to Greece. Does that sweeten the pot? (you'll have to face demons, but there will also be yummy food and beaches - it's a trade off)

I am SO there. That is one of the places I have always wanted to go... :)

Greece

Jim and I went there on our honeymoon and it was amazing. And, really, I think that's why I chose to write about a hero from Santorini. I just love the people, the culture, the history - everything about Greece.

Sounds like fun research. Next time, maybe you need to take your mom along. Can't wait to get my hands on the book. Okay...off to take the quiz.

LOL Mom never would have made it past the first level of the Hoover Dam. She has trouble with elevators, much less long-abandoned inspection tunnels. Plus, the engineer who took us down there was a smart aleck - he kept turning off the lights.

We do have fun. My favorite part about being a newly published author (besides having an excuse to meet other authors) is having a reason to actually get out and experience the people and places from the books.

And it's an experience for them, too. Heck, through research with the Harley bikers, I've introduced them to romance. There's nothing like a bunch of tattooed, bearded bikers in the romance aisle. They say they'll be there again when this second book comes out. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

Biker Witches

Okay, now I'm beginning to worry - I live close to Laconia, New Hampshire and I've seen first hand what it can look like when bikers gather en masse and bikes travel fast...

Margay Leah Justice

You don't know the number of

You don't know the number of stories I've heard about Laconia. If half of them are true, well, then let's just say these bikers know how to have fun. Have you ever seen any of the bikers up there riding with their dogs? Stryker, who helped me research both books (and who likes to show up and flirt with readers at signings) he goes to Laconia with his Corgi. I think I might even have some pictures of Cash (the Corgi) on my blog. Cutest biker dog you ever saw.

I don't remember seeing dogs

I don't remember seeing dogs just lots and lots of men - what can I say? I notice men and when they're dressed in denim and leather and riding in on motorcycles, well, they're a lot more noticeable! I've heard the same thing about them knowing how to have fun. But let me tell you, they're really softies because when there's a kid in need (i.e., the Jerry Lewis Telethon), they're there for them. Some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.

Margay Leah Justice

They are really nice. I was

They are really nice. I was surprised at how easy it was to have fun and talk with the Harley riders I met. I'm sort of a girly-girl. Heck, I wore pink to my first biker rally (and caught a lot of teasing for it - who knew?) but they didn't judge me for being different. That said, I think some of the guys do get a kick out of people judging them for their leather and tattoos. But as "outside" as they like to be, a lot of the guys I met hold rides and raise money for families of the soldiers serving overseas. Because, you're right - they hear about a cause and want to help.

I have to say that I have

I have to say that I have kind of a soft spot for them because my brother was a Harley guy (he wanted to open his own shop, but then he got sick and passed away) and it was because of him that my preconceived notions of them were dashed. You probably would've loved my brother. He was a gentle giant - 6'3" in all directions (as I liked to say 'cause the guy was TALL and built) but his nickname was "Tiny" and he had a tattoo of Yosemite Sam, could do cartoon character voices almost better than the originals and had the voice of an angel. My fondest memories are of him doing one of the following things: 1. Calling me up from the road and talking to me in the voice of Pepe le Pew, and 2. Calling me up from the road and singing his favorite country songs to me. I always pictured him, this great, gentle guy, driving his big rig (he was a truck driver before he passed) through the mountains of the South while the sun set (because he always described them to me), singing something by Montgomery Gentry or Travis Tritt. Funny thing is, about a week or so after he died, I had a dream that I was standing in a parking lot and he drove by me, slowly, on his Harley, and as he came right in front of me, he sort of leaned over and swept the ground in front of me with a hand and I woke up the next morning knowing that he was at peace. Some day, I might write about him...

Oh wow, that gave me chills.

LOL

My BIL goes with his friends to Laconia every year -- it's their Christmas. My niece loves it, because she works a second job at a BBQ place up there, and can pull in $600-$700 dollars a NIGHT in tips from bikers. It's out of my realm, but I have heard a lot about it second hand. :)

Welcome, Angie!

I loved the cover of the Accidental Demon Slayer (it's on my bedside TBR pile), and this new cover is great, too! I'm 61% demon slayer which sounds about right. I know when danger is close, but I turn and run the other way! Although there was that time I was trapped in Eastport, Maine with my boss for three days due to a nor'easter, and we spent our evenings at a bar called Big Bad Bud's. Sounds a lot more impressive than it was really was. I would have loved to take that tour of the Hoover Dam tunnels; that kind of stuff really fascinates me. And finally, my neighbor rides a Harley with his dog...right up in front of him, and this dog isn't all that small, either! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself.

Can't wait to read your books! Thank you so much for such a fun post!

Karen

Thanks, Karen. I did luck out with cover artists. Did you notice the crazy medieval weapons? Those aren't in the books. My demon slayer fights with switch stars (kind of like tricked out throwing stars). Anyhow, my editor didn't think they'd translate to a book cover, so the artist started giving my heroine these tricked out weapons. The first book has a carved long sword. The second book is this medieval battle axe. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. In fact, I'm thinking about inserting a little joke about the weapons into this third book that I'm writing now. We'll see who notices.

The Hoover Dam tunnels were really amazing. I wanted to set part of the book there, but I wasn't really sure how to do it until I saw things for myself and - wow - it blew me away. Then it was great because the engineer who took me down there was able to answer all of my random questions as I wrote those scenes.

Big Bad Bud's sounds like my kind of place. A good spot for biker witch watching. Your neighbor sounds like a lot of fun - those Harley dog owners know how to have a good time. :)

Well...

a mere 61% demon slayer! Maybe it's all that kid-wrangling that helped bump up my score ;) Congrats on the series! It sounds like such a fun read, Angie! And how neat that you and Aileen were able to explore so much in the name of research! What's up next?

Ah yes! Kid wrangling is

Ah yes! Kid wrangling is fantastic exercise. I've been doing a lot of that myself this morning.

Up next is a vampire story in the next Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance. Alas, I didn't get to go to Transylvania for that one. I'm writing a voodoo story for an anthology that I'm not allowed to announce yet (boo), and also writing the third book in the Accidental Demon Slayer series which takes place in Greece.

Ooh...

Greece! Have you visited? That's on the list of places to see :) (Not sure Transylvania's on my list, but I don't mind reading about it!) And wow--voodoo? Where's that one set? I always think of Louisiana and voodoo for some reason...

fedora

My husband and I honeymooned in Greece about six years ago and it was fantastic - a land apart. There's just so much history over there. You're literally stumbling over it. It was such a great experience that I think that's why I chose a Greek hero for this series.

And you guessed it - the voodoo story is set in New Orleans. I've learned so much researching Louisiana voodoo. It's really cool. I keep getting sidetracked from the story with, erm, unnecessary (yet fun) distractions.
