A girl and her toys

Electronic toys, that is *g*

My keyboard died this last weekend. A long coming death I should have seen, but kept trying to ignore it. When it reached the poin that it only actually typed every third letter I tapped, I finally gave in and admitted it. It was dead *sad sigh* Now, usually I'm all for new toys. I love my handheld computer, for instance. I never leave home without my Razr cellphone. I can't write without my iPod. I admit it, I'm kinda, a little bit, a geek.

But my keyboard? This is the one that my husband once sat down to type at and freaked because there were no letters on half the keys. They'd been worn away. The space bar had an actual groove worn it it from my thumbs. It was... perfectly fitted.

And more importantly... its the keyboard that I used to write all of my manuscripts. Not just the ones that sold, all of them.

Call me superstitious, but I was a little freaked to toss it and get a new one. But... I had to.

So I went for ergonomics, tons of nifty personalized shortcut keys, and wireless (the dog always pulled the other keyboard and mouse off the desk when she ran under to hide at my feet).

It feels good. It also feels wierd. It'll be interesting to see how it affects my writing pace. But - as luck would have it, I received my line edits for my January release, DOES SHE DARE? so I'll test it out on those. Kinda like carrying the good mojo forward hahahah.

So how about you? Do you ladies have any superstitions when it comes to projects or writing? I'd love to hear them. Especially if changing any of them worked LOL.

New Toys...

I can't think of any superstitions per se about my writing when it comes to my computer, but I am ALL OVER new toys! I got my royalty check and bought myself a twenty-two inch monitor. totally love that bad boy :-) AND I got the kids a computer which means they are finally OFF MINE ENTIRELY! That alone is a gift :-)

Woot - lets hear it for hogging the 'puter!

Shirley, I'm all over that PERSONAL computer thing :-) We bought a second computer a few years ago, and I made the grand sacrifice of keeping the old one (ha) as long as the family agreed to stay off it. Isn't it GREAT to know its always there, waiting, just for you?!

I think I'm jealous of your monitor tho. 22 inches? OMG it sounds fab!

monitor real estate

I got the 20-inch Mac a couple of years ago... bliss. I just love that huge screen. The downside is though that its a desktop... I envy DH sitting on the floor watching TV with his laptop. However I'm getting a folding keyboard for my PDA (ordered it yesterday!) so it will be like a little alphasmart that I can use anywhere. It has a book reader program too, so I'm reading all these free e-books - Sherlock Holmes at the moment!

Superstitions

I don't think I have any superstitions either, other than kissing my submissions for good luck before I leave them at the post office. LOL Okay, maybe a little bit. But, it can't hurt. I love the electronic stuff too. The new keyboard sounds awesome, so do line edits so we can read your next book that much sooner. Amanda Murphy w/a Jill James http://www.jilljamesromance.com

A kiss for luck

LOL - hey, it totally can't hurt to kiss the baby goodbye before it's off to wow an editor, huh? I used to have a ritual I went through before every submission. It was... well, lucky :-)

Pens

My superstition is if I use a certain pen or color if they're gel pens and I get in a writing grove, then I'll use the same pen or colors for the rest of the manuscript. Course if I can't get any pages going, I'll stop using that color till the next wip.

Color coding rocks

Since I always write on the computer, I've never tried color coordinating my writing, per se. But I always have coordinated my clips, rubber bands, divider papers, etc, depending on the story.

btw, I finally found gel pens that didn't dry up right away. LOVE them!

Does anyone know if writing and office supply obsession are like a package deal?

office supply danger zone

Maybe. I'd thought it was an art thing, stemming from my love of paper. I looooove paper. I collect it. Handmade Nepalese paper, Japanese origami paper, Rice paper, Italian printmaking paper, English mould-made rag paper.... They recently opened an Officeworks store here... OMG.... talk about a kid in a lolly shop. I racked up about three hundred dollars without even trying. I daren't go near it now, I'm trying to save money! Euri

Hi Tawny

No real superstitions but, I used to have a black cat named Deamon. She ran away and everything seemed to go wrong for awhile. I think she was my good luck cat. I'm looking for another all black cat but, I don't think it will be the same. I'll let you know if I find another all black cat and my luck suddenly changes for the better. Mads

Here kitty kitty kitty...

How heartbreaking to lose your kitty, and then to be smacked with bad luck on top of it?! Thats just wrong!

I don't know that the cats bring the luck, or if its just the belief... let me know how that turns out ;-)

btw, I totally get the lucky black cat thing. I have 4 cats. 3 are black (one has white on her belly tho - the other two are pure black) and 1 is gray. Both dogs are black too LOLOL

Tawny

I love office supplies. I love to browse the aisles at an office supply store, buy cool looking clips, gel pens, color folders, etc.. I do not write. I am a secretary. Hmmm.... I have keyboard envy write now. My work keyboard is skipping and ycuky. My home keyboard is not set up. Also, I cannot walk out the door without my generic razor phone (the katana) tucked in my bra. Have a great day! Debbie

Congrats on the new toy!

I love new toys... I don't really have any superstitions or such about writing, so I don't think you have to worry about using a new computer. ;)

My old Dell was exactly the same -- had rubbed all the letters off. What's really funny is that if I look at the keyboard I can't type, but as long as I'm looking at the screen, I'm fine, so not having letters there didn't bother me. LOL
